The Green River Trail winds along the banks from south Seattle to Auburn, with a few interruptions. It is an big city trail, entering residential, commercial, and industrial areas. It passes an entire street of casinos. Two major freeways cross over the trail on bridges. But there are also several parks, and lots of waterfront. At two places, the Green River Trail connects with the Interurban, whose long straight line contrasts with the Green's constant curves.
There are several trailheads. We chose the small parking lot at 180th Street South to begin our ride of the north portion.
It doesn't take long to understand this is an urban trail.
Signs are sometimes placed to tell you what you already know,
and sometimes absent at critical junctures.
At times the trail can feel a little confining.
Finding the continuation of the trail after the casino street can be especially challenging. Be susre to bring a map.
Even urban trails have their bucolic spots,
even though I-5 is right around that curve.
An 8-lane freeway can make a triker feel pretty small.
But the end of the trail is still refreshing
at North Winds Weir in Cecil B. Moses Park. The weir rises above the surface only at low tide, and marks the spot where fresh and saltwater meet in the lower Duwamish/Green River.
