The Lake Wilderness Trail follows the old railroad bed the Cedar River Trail toward Black Diamond.
It passes through several short tunnels,
and briefly follows above the shoreline of Lake Wilderness.
In fact, much of the trail is raised high above its surroundings.
The surface gets a little more rocky near the turnaround at the end, which is only a short distance from the maze of mountain bike trails in Black Diamond Natural Area.
On the return trip, I took the steep exit trail to the lake itself.
The dirt forest trail is quite smooth, and leads into Lake Wilderness Park.
Paved trails wander through the park
Nobody uses it in the off season, so here's a chance for a unique ride.
