There is good parking at the Sumner Sewage Treatment Plant trailhead. This puts you right next to the elusive spot where the White and Puyallup Rivers merge. Although you are surrounded by freeways, the trail is in a beautiful forest.
Going left, you follow the Puyallup River to a bridge across to the Riverwalk Trail. The bridge has both a sidewalk and bike lane. I have never seen a pedestrian here.
If you go right from the parking lot, you follow the White River north toward town. This is new trail with fresh pavement and new native plantings along the side.
Soon you are under the freeway at the water's edge.
Sumner has solved the problem of how to route a new trail through an established neighborhood--expand the sidewalk to twelve feet wide and open it to all users.
