Ocean Shores, June '98

Howdy Fighter Kite Fans,

This past weekend, June 5,6 & 7 was the Ocean Shores Kite Festival. The weather was good, no rain, but not much sun either. On Friday and Saturday the wind was variable from 8 to 16 mph. On Sunday, the day of the fighter kite competition, there was only a breath of air! Very challenging indeed!

All 13 of the competitors were very well prepared for ultralight wind, and each had kites that flew fairly well, except for the winners. Those 3 had amazingly hot performing kites for the wind conditions!

During the competition, the wind was 1-3 mph. A modified double elimination was the competition format, similar to what will be used at Long Beach.

The matches were 2 out of 3 points, over, under, over. The match for 1st and 2nd was a 3 out of 5 point match; over, under, over, under over.

Ocean Shores June 6, 1998 winners

1st went to Dennis Crowley of Tacoma, WA,
2nd went to Brian Johnsen of Seattle, WA and
3rd went to Jeff MacInnis of Portland, OR.

The kites that won 1st and 3rd place were made by Jeff MacInnis.
The kite that won 2nd was made by Brian Johnsen.

Jordan & Buka Dako

Jordan flew Dave Jam's indoor buka dako for the club's first buka points and match in club history (nice kite and good flying).

(wEd. I called Jordan "Jason" in a posting on rec.kites the other day. Hope I got it right this time ;)

Remember that June 20th is the club's next meeting/fly at Ocean Shores. Plan to come. Among other fun stuff, you will see and be able to fly the kites that took the "gold, silver and bronze".

During the OS festival, the embroidered club logo hat was introduced. A big success! If you want one for your very own, just save up $15 and pick one up at the next club meeting/fly on the 20th! They really look spiffy! Also, if you like the logo and want it on a sweatshirt, t-shirt, polo shirt, jacket, or whatever, just bring the garment you want it on and we will get it custom embroidered for you. You can even choose the colors of the logo to match or contrast with the color of the garment you bring. The cost for having the logo put onto your garment in $10.

Here are the details of the club's costs for this logo project. To get the logo set up with the computerized embroidery company, the club paid $110. Each hat the club sells for $15 gives the club $5 toward the repayment of that setup fee and the club gets $4 for each logo put on your garment. So . . . . bring some of your favorite sweats, T-shirts, etc and convert them to NFKA logo apparel! You will look C O O L !! And will be the envy of everyone!!

What has been happening with you and your fighter kite flying and/or kite building lately? Go ahead, share with the rest of us all the juicy good stuff that has been happening, or the purely plain and boring; either way, we are listening! Email Brian or me with details, thanks.

Hope your week is full of fighter kite flying and gobs of grins.
Bruce

Howdy,

We have a couple additions to our list of club members who are Ocean Shores Kite Festival winners!! That's right, more winners!

At the Ocean Shores Kite Festival some members entered their hand crafted fighters in the Hand Crafted Kite Competition. Unfortunately, I didn't find out about the results of these until just the other day. Hope I have not missed anyone who won, if so, please email me the results so all of us can share your victory!

Congratulations to JIM WILSON and GARY GOODENOUGH !!

Jim Wilson won Best Fighter with his wonderful Icarex cut and pieced fighter.

Gary Goodenough won 3rd in the Flat and Bowed category with is beautiful painted Icarex square fighter.

On the 20th of June, when we have our fly at Ocean Shores, you will be able to take a good look at these beautiful kites close up and maybe even fly them!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR - - - JUNE 2OTH is our next meeting/fly at Ocean Shores, plan on joining in the fun!

About the upcoming fly on the 20th, I suggest we meet on the beach at the Pacific Blvd beach approach road, instead in front of the Shilo Inn. It is a much less congested area of the beach, lots more room to fly!

This is how to get to the Pacific Blvd beach approach road. When you have entered Ocean Shores the road you are on is Point Brown Road. At the 1st stop sign, at the McDonalds, continue through the intersection and stay on Point Brown Road for about 1 mile, until you come to Pacific Blvd ( it intersects Point Brown Road ). Turn RIGHT on to Pacific Blvd and stay on it until you hit the beach! You'll see a bunch of folks flying and grinning; hurry, grab your kites, jump out of your car and join in the fighter fun.

If you have any questions about how to get there,
just give me a call at (360) 289 2717.

We should have sunny warm weather, perfect kite flying. Ya, that's only my forecast, but you can put it up against the best weatherfolks around! It will be a great time to practice for the Westport Festival fighter kite competition. The Westport Kite festival is July 10, 11, 12!

Remember if you have any fighter kite info, kite making tip, story, joke, cartoon, photo, suggestions, poem or article, email it to me or Brian!

Look forward to seeing you on the 20th!
Bruce
