Fighter Kite Competion / Auction
Saturday all the fighter flyers were tuning up for the match at 10:00.
The wind still hadn't let up. In for a rough match. Marie drubbed me
two to nill in the first round so I was out for the day. I helped out
catching runaway kites and reels downwind for a while until my friends
from dinner the night before came by and I spent the rest of the match
explaining fighter kites to them.
That afternoon Ludo made a very intricate fringed paper bird kite.
Facinating.
Dinner at the WSIKF banquet. They had a number of items out for silent
auction. You write down your name and bid and the next person outbids
you for each item until 8:00. As the time limit approached, there was
a great deal of manouvering, application of knees & elbows and possibly
a few teeth endangered proximate to the more popular items. Johnny came
out of the melee with title to a set of wooden Japanese spinning tops.
Mr. Stiles was making the rounds in a green top hat and blue-gray
waistcoat. Philippe began trailing along behind, waving and smirking
at everyone behind his back until Superman clued Mr. Stiles in.
Spoilsport ;)
The auction finally got underway with a large number if items including
a long fringed tube tail from Dave Colbert, a custom built bamboo knife
from Jim Day, the dragon scarf, headbands and fabric. Too much to
enumerate. Then the marvelous dyed hapi coat from Barb Wright with a
fighter kite motif. Hadda have it, and eventually outbid everyone else ;)
A number of kiters from the area have Barbs' hapi coats, each one a unique
design, and I've been admiring them for years. I'm hapi ;)
