An Independant Review of Shadow 8/24/00
He is a beautiful dog who lives for affectionate companionship. It took little time or effort to elicit engagement for active play, and he enjoys ball, toy and tug play with his people. Provided an opportunity for reward-based training, Shadow should come along nicely in obedience due in large part to his eager readiness to please his handler. He responds well to verbal praise and guidance and would not require a heavy hand to produce solid obedience. He is not a chronic barker nor a digger, he gets along well with other people, and when out in the yard he is a discerning guardian of property without unnecessary barking. With continued supervised time in the home he should settle in nicely. He does not display aggression toward other dogs while on walks out in public, even to dogs actively aggressing toward him. He has shown a strong guarding instinct while in his crate, warning off dogs who breach his perceived territory. He is not a hard dog, and his overall bearing and attitude express confidence. Initial bitework on the tug shows potential for a calm, firm bite and continued incremental training could further bring out the prey and defense drives left dormant for lack of training and stimulation. He is crate-trained and goes in and out easily on command. He is not accustomed to an outdoor kennel and would not be an appropriate dog for somebody requiring that their dog spend time in an outdoor kennel facility. Of course, with his early exposure to sheep and herding training he is an outstanding candidate for someone seeking a herding GSD; he would also be an excellent candidate for a person seeking a GSD for personal companion and property guardian. He would also be an enjoyable first dog for the novice Schutzhund handler. All said, Shadow would be an attentive and affectionate companion regardless of the formal training to be undertaken.
