N/A N/A I had salmon teriyaki and sushi, and was pleased with both. The salmon was not as fresh as can be found in Seattle, but the teriyaki sauce was very flavorful and better than in many Seattle restaurants. The sushi was surprisingly good, and matched the quality I found on The Strip (I had sushi on Las Vegas Boulevard, but don't remember the name of the place, so I can't post it). Osaka is really one of the best Japanese restaurants I have experienced.

N/A Yes The staff is very helpful (more than just about any restaurant I've been to), and will try their best to cook a dish you like, even if it's not on the menu. A lunch buffet is available, and looks very good (but I didn't eat it because of the MSG). The lunch item I ordered was good but not great. I believe it serves some more traditional and authentic Chinese dishes that are now my favorites but at the time I didn't know enough about Chinese cuisine to order them (they probably would have been better than what I ordered).

No There are two Choochai locations, and this is the one that caters to the University population. Consequently I think it's a little less constrained by the American palate, and offers some pretty good curry dishes. What is not offered is table service--you order at the counter and either take it to your table or take it home. It also does not have the extensive menu found at Choochai Today, but only simple, standard Thai dishes. I have been at lunch hour when it took so long to prepare the food that I had trouble getting back in time, but that is because of its popularity with the college crowd. Try some of the curries to get an authentic taste of Thai food.

It does serve salmon, which is why I choose it over the Shogun, but it is the quality of salmon you would expect to find in West Texas (farmed Atlantic salmon instead of the wild varieties). The flavor of the food was good, but I would probably suggest beef or chicken over the fish.

There is a counter in the front of the restaurant where people order from menus that are only in Chinese, and this looks like better and/or more interesting food than is on the regular menu. The regular menu, though, did not look very exciting. Free parking in an underground garage.

Table Explanation

Rating (5 is best). Based on food quality. If there are problems in other categories, such as being too expensive, or other factors that would significantly affect the enjoyment of eating there, I will try to mention it in the comments column. See Rating & Cost Explanation

Times Tried (1, 2, 3 or more). If I've had 3 or more meals there, I feel more confident with the rating given, especially if I've tried several different dishes. With Japanese restaurants, ususally going once is enough because I most likely order salmon teriyaki and sushi at the same meal.

Last Tried (Year). A recent survey is the most accurate, not only because it's the most representative of the current food quality, but also because I may have had more restaurants with which to compare it.

Tea (Jasmine). If jasmine tea is available, I will mention whether it is house (free), or if no mention is made that indicates there is an extra charge for it. The following are the usual ways jasmine or other teas can be served:

  • Bags: Brewed with tea bags.
  • Brewed: Brewed in a large batch in the kitchen. House tea is almost always made this way.
  • Loose Leaves: Served in a pot with loose leaves placed in the water (not from tea bags).
  • Herbal: Sometimes there is a fine line between loose leaf tea and herbal tea. I'm classifying herbal tea as lighter and usually better quality tea, many times brewed in a special glass pot.

If jasmine is not available, I will mention which kind is available. For Japanese restaurants, it is standard to have green tea. Many times oolong is served (this would usually be my choice if jasmine is not available). N/A usually means I can't remember.

MSG (Monosodium Glutamate). "No" means it is not used at all. "Yes" means it is used, but you can order food without it (many times the soup and other pre-prepared items will still have it). If I order food without MSG, but end up with a reaction, it will most likely get a one-star rating.

Go To Top

Rating Criteria

  • This list is limited to the places I've visited. Over time I would like to cover more cities.
  • When I go to a city I try to find the best and most authentic restaurants. There may be better ones I do not know about. Sometimes I rely on other web sites to give me ideas of where to go, but once I try a place I rate it according to my scale.
  • All information listed is subject to change, and may not be up to date. It is meant to help you find good places, and nothing more.
  • This list is totally subjective. I try to rate restaurants in a category against each other, using the same criteria regardless of geographic area. In some cases restaurants in small towns or isolated areas might receive a slightly higher rating simply because they are the best ones for miles around.

Asian Food Styles

C Chinese. Probably the most plentiful type of Asian food in America. Ginger tofu is generally my favorite dish when they have it, and I generally rate the restaurant on this dish or dishes with flavorful sauces such as kung pao, home style tofu, plum sauce, yu shiang, and chicken or fish with sauces such as orange flavor, sesame, or General Tsou's. Since I give good ratings based on my favorite dish, it is probably one of these dishes. I also give weight to the quality of the hot and sour soup and the tea served (I like a good jasmine tea). I tend to like Mandarin, Szechuan, and Hunan styles, but not Cantonese. I've been to exactly one restaurant that I thought served authentic Szechuan food (Sichuanese Cuisine in Redmond, Wash.) and it was terrific. If I go to non-authentic Szechuan and Hunan restaurants, and they serve food I like, I will go ahead and give them a good rating. Chinese food is the category with the greatest percentage of mediocre and bad food. I almost never eat from Chinese buffets, and consider most of them an abonimation.

I Indian. There are not too many places on my list, but I will include the places I know about. My favorite dishes are masala and kofta.

J Japanese. Japanese food cooked in the kitchen is some of my favorite Asian food, including such items as teriyaki salmon, tempura, etc. If teriyaki salmon is available, this is usually what I order, and the primary basis for the restaurant's rating. I am more picky about the sushi, and generally like only what is found on the west coast. I usually don't go to restaurants that only serve sushi, and if I order sushi it will be for an appetizer. I don't like teppan grill restaurants-- they generally charge the highest prices and deliver the least satisfying food. Don't expect any of these places or sushi-only restaurants to be rated higher than 3 or 4 stars (unless it's fabulous sushi).

K Korean. I don't eat Korean food often, so I don't have very many restaurants to rate. The Korean food I have tried was not as enjoyable to me as other types. I prefer the flavorful sauces of Chinese or the spices of Thai food. Although I tend to like the Korean side dishes that are usually served, I haven't found too many main dishes I'm crazy about. I also don't like the tiny fish or the hot dogs sometimes served as "vegatable" side dishes. I like Korean ice tea, but I would much prefer the hot tea served at other Oriental restaurants. Overall, I'm not the best person to judge Korean food, but I will at least give my opinion about the relative quality of the restaurants I've tried.

L Laotian. I have limited experience with this type of food. It is extremely spicy, and seafood soups are good.

M Malaysian. Similar to Thai. Has some sweet dishes, such as mango dishes. Meat cooked on a skewer is also served.

T Thai. It's very difficult to find authentic Thai food, even in cities with large Thai populations such as Seattle. The types of dishes I would like to find include good curries with coconut milk (not necessarily extremely spicy), dishes with a large dose but a good balance of oils and spices such as fish oil, ginger, lemongrass, basil, etc., good soups, and noodles such as phad thai (the least exciting Thai food to me, but still enjoyable when it's prepared well). Usually my favorite dish is phad khing (ginger tofu), and there is some, (but not very much) good swimming angel (spinach with peanut sauce) in Seattle and surrounding areas. Ginger tofu is usually the dish I try first, and is the basis for most of the ratings of Thai restaurants unless otherwise noted. My bias in this area is that I like Thai food so much I am usually happy with something that's less than authentic (most of the time that's all you can find), and give restaurants a good rating if I enjoy the food. When I find one that's also authentic that's a bonus, and the score will be reflected in the detailed ratings, but in order to get five stars on this list it is usually not required.

V Vietnamese. The standard used here is ususally the vermicelli dish with vegetables. If I order another item it will usually be soup such as hot and sour or seafood soup. I don't usually go to pho or banh mi places.

O Other Including "Regional Asian," and "Pan Asian" restaurants. I like restaurants that serve more than one style of food prepared well. I don't like the "fusion" restaurants or ones that merely serve their own concoctions or dishes that are not recognizable as coming from a specific country.
