I liked it better this time than the first few times I heard it. The outstanding feature seems to be the fuzz/wha wha bass line. Is Trevor playing this? It is quite unique. And the guitar solo seems a bit Roy inspired to my ears...intentional to draw attention to it? The structure of the song is rather repetitive but there's a certain catchiness to it. It deserved a better fate than it got. Did this chart at all? Is there other material by Balls that remains unreleased? I have read that there were a lot of substances being consumed during Balls tenure, perhaps explaining why they never got anywhere. I'm looking forward to hearing Trevor's new music. ELO perhaps, give the definitive versions of Jeff's songs but somebody else can come along and give a different interpretation and it's equally appealing. What attracts me about Jeff's songs is that they all have a certain sadness, a soulful feel." - Carl Wayne, who performs "Steppin' Out" "I have a vague recollection that when Roy Wood and Jeff were forming ELO or Wizzard (there's the vagueness) I was asked to play keyboards because I did a lot of string arranging for The Move. I had to disappoint them by saying that I wrote on guitar then, not keyboard and I could just barely get through Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On on piano. But Mr. Blue Sky was a favorite of both Bowie's son and my son when it came out, so it was played to death in our homes. I ended up loving it very much and gaining deep respect for what Jeff had achieved since his early association with Roy." - Tony Visconti, who performs "Mr. Blue Sky" "Lynne Me Your Ears - A Tribute To The Music Of Jeff Lynne" was released on 26 February in the USA and in Japan but is not scheduled for UK, European release or Rest Of The World release. Taking everyone at Not Lame Recordings by surprise, the first pressing sold out immediately. But FTM (in conjunction with the record company) have secured copies and are pleased to be able to make this CD available to Move and ELO fans at a DISCOUNTED price outside of the USA and Canada. (One import specialist in the UK is currently offering the CD at £15.99 plus postage). The double CD features 32 reworked and reinterpreted songs showcasing Lynne's music from the 60's and 70's with THE IDLE RACE and THE MOVE, through the global superstar years of the 70's and 80's with ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA, to more recent work as solo artist and producer and as a member of the legendary TRAVELING WILBURYS. Plus a booklet featuring a Jeff Lynne career history, specific to the tribute album cover versions, written by ELO archivist Rob Caiger. (Full track listing below.) Running behind...as always! ---- Record Collector May 2002, Issue #273 by Joe Geesin It's been a while since Jeff had any major publicity in the UK, but his influence on the music scene can't be ignored. Between the Move, ELO, Idle Race and Traveling Wilburys, Jeff has produced some classic albums. So do these versions do him justice? Well, yes and no. Many incorporate the orchestral rock that is his trademark and remain tighter than a lap-dancer's G-string. But few really add anything of substance. "Do Ya" is a great cover by Jason Falkner, but only Ace Frehley's version 13 years ago betters the original. Pat Buchanon (sic) shines on "Rockaria," but other tracks like "Telephone Line" go nowhere. Cuts by Carl Wayne and Tony Visconti are cool, and Swag's "Don't Bring Me Down" is worth a mention - though if you play it at 45, it's the Beach Boys! Of course, no Lynne collection would be complete without Mr. Blue Sky, but a partly spoken-word version over a lame electronic beat? A fairly enjoyable collection, then, but probably one that was more fun to take part in than to listen to. ********** Subject: Roy's car (some trivia) Date: Mon, 22 Apr 2002 20:56:48 -0700 From: "chris roberts" Mark Jarman wrote: > Burning question? Has Roy still got that big white car? Did he ever > have it? I have just spent the last half an hour re-reading chunks of Bev's "ELO Story" book as I vaguely remembered a snippet about a 'large car'. Unfortunately this turned out to be "Roy would turn up in his pink sparkled Jensen with the number plate TOP 20 H". This was during a story about the first ELO tour (on page 43) which pre-dates Mark's "Waiting for Roy" tale by some three years - so a bit irrelevant I suppose - but I thought I'd share it anyway if only to convince myself that my 'research' was worth while. :OI Not being a 'petrol head', I don't know if the Jensen marque is known of in the US but in case not - for those interested the company made fabulous big sports cars of similar performance, standing and fabulous price to Aston Martin and the like. The model Roy had was almost certainly the most famous one, namely the Interceptor which featured a swooping wraparound rear windscreen and was 'the very thing to have' in the early 70's. The passing years have seen Roy 'calm down somewhat' in his motoring (like the rest of us - nah!) and his preferred car choice is now a more sedate Range Rover. Roy has owned a succession of these, turned one over in a very nasty accident a few years ago, still drives to gigs in his current one and fairly recently was featured behind the wheel of a RR in that very odd TV programme "Stars and their Cars". Hi Linda, Well, I *was* really looking forward to seeing Carl with the Hollies in the U.S. Being in the Los Angeles area, I thought for sure I'd be seeing them at one of many cool clubs we have out here, or perhaps an amphitheatre. But, no. For some perplexing reason, they're playing in Long Beach at what amounts to large patch of grass surrounded by dirt, with folding chairs, beer tents, and a simply dreadful sound system. I saw Orchestra (formerly ELO Part II) there last year and I'm afraid the whole experience soured me on wanting to see the band again. It's for this reason that I won't be going to see the Hollies. Not because I don't want to see them (I've been waiting two years for the chance) but because I don't want to settle for seeing them in an inadequate setting. Carl's great voice will be lost in the wind, I am sure. The U.S. dates are below. I have a feeling Connecticut fans in particular will be seeing a very good show. Wish I could go to that one. There have been a number of reviews of Carl w/the Hollies on the Move list... I'm in the midst of archiving all the past digests. I'll dig out a couple reviews and re-post them. ---- Hollies On Tour: http://www.hollies.co.uk/html/tourmain.html July Sat 27th Long Beach, California Green On The Hill (562) 495-5959 Sun 28th Stillwater, Minnesota Lumberjack Days (651) 430-2306 Tue 30th Kearney, Nebraska Tri-City Arena (308) 338-8011 August Thu 1st Hyannis, Massachusetts Cape Cod Melody Tent (508) 775-9100 Fri 2nd Westbury, New York Westbury Music Fair (516) 334-0800 Sat 3rd Cohasset, Massachusetts South Shore Music Circus (781) 383-9850 Sun 4th Connecticut Mohegan Sun Casino (800) 477-6849 ********** Subject: Re: Carl w/the Hollies Date: Sun, 21 Apr 2002 23:14:53 -0700 From: John DeSilva Folks: I was seriously considering making a trip down to Southern CA to see the new Hollies lineup with Carl, but thankfully Lynn posted her experience with the venue in Long Beach. Believe me, late July in So. California is HOT - not conducive to an outdoor concert. Add to that lousy sound and it just isn't worth it. So in looking at the rest of the US schedule, my question is this - is this the best they can do? Do any of you who live in the midwest and east have any information about these dates - are these good venues? It seems like a club tour would have worked much better for them (as small as the VU was for Woody and the Army, it was still cool to see them so "up close and personal"). I'm just not sure that the sounds of a classic British pop and rock band are best appreciated at an event called "Lumberjack Days" ... ;-D It's reminiscent of that scene in "This Is Spinal Tap" where they play at the "amphitheatre" where the Puppet Show gets top billing! I'd love to see Carl perform live, but I just wish I could see him somewhere on the West Coast in a venue worthy of his and the other guys' talents (even during the Move's disastrous US tour they played the Fillmore West!!). Maybe I'm just expecting too much, but I think the Hollies at a club or theatre in LA and/or San Francisco (as well as other clubs/theatres in cities in the midwest, south, and east) would be a fantastic showcase of their music. Totally agree about the "Lumberjack Days" thing. I'll tell you another odd one was seeing the Yardbirds play on the beach in Santa Cruz last summer. It was free though! And they were great, even though the only original members were Chris Dreja and Jim McCarty. I guess Eric, Jeff, and Jimmy were tied up that day! But it was a little incongruous seeing the Yardbirds on the beach! They are touring again over here, and will be playing in Campbell, near San Jose, on May 8th (I think it is, somewhere right around there) ********** Subject: Re: Tell us the news about yourself... I'll restrict myself to Move titles to make it a bit easier Curly It tells a story simply and very effectively Feel Too Good When I was younger and shorter of temper I used to find this track so cathartic - nowadays I don't have to be in a bad mood to play it! The Girl Outside A beautiful and really elegant song Fields of People Probably my favourite track from my favourite Move album but it's a close-run thing Ben Crawley Steel Company I really used to hate my employer too - not for the same reason :) >What's your favorite Move related album, and why? I'll have to have one Move and one non-Move Shazam - because it's so perfectly balanced and reminds me of the long hot summer of 1976 which was when I first heard it. But when I delved into The Move Back Catalogue I found that I recognised a lot of their material and already liked it! > Tell us about your top 5 favorite Move related tracks. Oh! Hard Question Alert!! Well, I just love Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited, what a masterpiece of pure genius!! The Instrumental section is mind blowing! Field's Of People is fantastic too! The total change on the 2nd part of the song is amazing and very imaginative. Disturbance, just love the mad ending with all the screaming, what an amazing and daring group The Move were for the 60's! Fire Brigade, just love the catchyness of this pure pop classic! Finally, What, an amazing track that has Jeff Lynne written all over it! This track would fit well on ELO 1, it's like a hybrid of The Move and early ELO. I have to say that I hav'nt heard a Move song that I dislike, and I have every track that has been released so far! > What's your favorite Move related album, and why? Shazam, it's a well crafted album, it goes from pop to the real bizarre psychedelic sound, with Fields Of People. Plus I love all the little talking bits, great British sense of humour. A great and unique album! > What topics would you like to see discussed on this list? I think the list is doing great as it is! I love reading other fans opinions on all things Move and Related! I can't think of one for The Move or Roy, but I do have one for ELO. Back in 1997 I was hunting out the new ELO Compilation Light Years in all the Record Shops, and finding the cheapest place to buy it. I went into Virgin Megastore, and I was looking for it when a Shop Security Guard asked if he could help, so I said, 'I doub't it, I'm looking for Light Years, the new CD by The Electric Light Orchestra, i've just checked the ELO section and the charts, but you don't seem to stock it'. He replied, 'We have a Classical section upstairs'. I tried to explain who ELO were, but it was obvious that he did'nt have a clue as to what I was talking about! > Who are some of your other favorite artists/bands? I am a music fanatic! So I like lots of artists. Here's just a few - ELO (And everything related), Beatles (And solo projects), Moody Blues, The Nice, The Who, The Nazz, Kula Shaker, Blur, Pet Shop Boys, Freiheit, Oasis, Queen, Rick Wakeman, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue, The Osmonds, Cheap Trick, and the list goes on and on!! > Which Move related song do you wish one of your favorite bands > would cover? Ooh! Hard one! If Kula Shaker were still together I reckon they'd do a real Rockin' Version of Fields Of People! > What is the one burning question that you have never had answered > in relation to Move/Roy Wood history or music? Hav'nt got one really, apart from the impossible question to answer! How many Songs and Different Takes off Songs, plus a complete Definitive Recording List, have The Move, Roy Wood and ELO ever done? Not even the great Rob Caiger could answer this to perfect accuracy! > Are you having trouble finding any Move related music on CD? Only the still to be released Move - Live at Fillmore, and Roy Wood's unreleased Live Album. I am still after Roy's Boulders, Super Active Wizzo and Back On The Road Again on CD, but I think only Boulders has had a previous CD release, and it's coming out again soon anyway, I hope.
