The bad news is that the "Message From The Country" release has been pushed out to 2003. The good news is that additional material from the last Move session (yielding "California Man" and "Do Ya") has been discovered. I'm willing to wait to get any and all rarities that Rob can unearth! Maybe this will get MFTC expanded to two disks, a la "ELO (No Answer)"!! JD San Jose, CA ********** Subject: Move catalogue revamp - need your help! Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 17:24:06 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins As you maybe have read on The Move Online (http://www.themoveonline.com) a massive overhaul of The Move's catalog is planned for next year. Negotiations are underway to ensure Move recordings are protected and released PROPERLY. Meanwhile, tapes from The Move's only complete concert have been assessed at Abbey Road and will probably be released by the middle of next year. This is where the help of Move fans is needed. If you have memorabilia, photos or memories of the concert or of The Move's one and only short tour of the USA in 1969, please contact me ASAP. Please be as descriptive as possible. More info will be posted soon, but I wanted to get the list working on this. Thank you! Lynn lhoskins@earthlink.net P.S. As John mentioned, there's also an update on the Message From The Country remaster on The Move Online. ********** Subject: Linda McCartney's pictures of The Move Date: Tue, 20 Aug 2002 16:33:04 -0700 From: Shawn Rush I was just reading her book, and she said in it that she took pictures of the Move. Anyone know about them? Were they ever published? ********** Subject: Midnight Records / Roy at the VU pre-orders Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 19:13:39 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins If you've received a phone call from Midnight Records concerning whether you still want to order the Roy Wood at the Village Underground bootleg that you pre-ordered, would you please contact me BEFORE giving them your RSVP? No, you're not in trouble. ;) Some ideas are being kicked around to make sure at least some of the profits from this boot go to the right person. ********** Subject: Re: Midnight Records / Roy at the VU pre-orders Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 20:12:40 -0700 From: John DeSilva Lynn: For those of us who haven't placed an order with Midnight Records (and who quite frankly wouldn't and would like to see the money go to Roy anyway), will there be a "Move-list special" on this recording? I for one would be very happy to wait for a list offering - hopefully the sound quality is better than "bloody 'orrible" as my overworked friend Joe Doyle would say ... Inquiring minds want to know .... ;-) Thanks, The other JD San Jose, CA ********** Subject: Re: Midnight Records / Roy at the VU pre-orders Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 20:12:46 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins >Inquiring minds want to know .... ;-) And there are a lot of inquiring minds on this list... Ever since Midnight Records started running ads for this boot in Goldmine and other such publications (literally one week after the shows in New York!) I've received e-mails from pissed-off list members asking how the Move List can make sure Roy gets his royalties. I can tell you that Roy has not received one penny from "Tendolar," or any of the other bootleggers who have made a great deal of money off his songs. And he won't receive royalties for the "VU" boot that Midnight is selling, either. Define "Move-list special"? ;) The name Frank Zappa comes to mind... (If you haven't already confirmed your order, please don't. It would be great if you could wait.) Thanks, John. Input, anyone? ********** Subject: Meeting Alan Parsons Date: Tue, 20 Aug 2002 12:50:20 -0700 From: FifthFlRec I had the opportunity to have Alan Parsons sign my copy of Roy Wood's Bolders CD at Beatlefest in Chicago this past weekend. He was one of the engineers on those sessions, and was quite suprised to meet a 'Roy' fan in the US. Alan said that the Bolders album was a major turning point in his career and that he learned quite a bit from Roy. Nice to know....and a nice fellow too. And an excellent engineering job I might add. ********** Subject: Song Of The Week: "Down On The Bay" Date: Wed, 21 Aug 2002 02:56:46 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins Song Of The Week: August 19, 2002 "Down On The Bay" Possible discussion topics: Vocals Lyrics Instrumentation Songwriting Arrangement Production Personal interpretation Strong/weak points *********************** "Down On The Bay" (J. After the opening Chuck Berry guitar riff it moves to Elvis's "Don't be cruel" motif as Jeff Lynne does his best Jerry Lee Lewis vocal shenanigans (with echo). I wonder if the spoken, southern-accented gibberish at the end was meant as a gibe at Elvis's Memphis drawl? And why wasn't the duck credited? Cheers, Richard (n.p., oh yes! "Split ends") ********** Subject: Re: Song Of The Week: "Down On The Bay" Date: Wed, 21 Aug 2002 16:46:46 -0700 From: kakman1 One of Jeff's first great rockers, one I wish he would include in the ELO repertoire, like "Do Ya". It moves, it grooves, it rhumbas, it's wild, frenetic, and a little bit nuts. Roy's bass playing is absolutely solid and great, Bev plays some of his best rock'n'roll drumming at that time, Jeff's guitar and vocals is reminscent of Gene Vincent hopped up on amphetamines (probably just Newcastle Brown Ale and curry and vindaloo)! Cheap Trick did a good version of this, but nothing beats the original, you almost wish the record went on and and on and on. The lyrics, however simplistic they were, were a little hard to decipher in the mix, but hey, on your best rock'n'roll records , you didn't care, it was the beat that really mattered, whatever the vocalist was singing, you filled in any of the blanks in your mind. It was first issued in the US on MGM records, then withdrawn and subsequently reissued on UA. Copies of the MGM disc are quite rare and pricey, fetching as much as $100.00. I got lucky and have obtained two copies for under $30.00 ea. over the years. One is slightly cracked (as am I) and resides in my jukebox, the other is archived. Hope this helps. I'm sure it still applies. ;) By the way, does anyone have any idea WHO did the duck calls? ---- Subject: Re: Song Of The Week: "Down On The Bay" Date: Tue, 9 Jun 1998 08:49:48 -0400 From: "Joe Doyle" This is one of my favourite Jeff Lynne Move songs. Yes, it is a little lightweight, but it's a really "up" song that always puts me in a good mood. I love the guitar work and the overall feel of the song. Jeff's vocals are not too shabby either. One of the good things about Roy in general, and the Roy/Jeff Move period was that they covered so many musical styles; and did it so well. Good ol' rock'n'roll. 10/10 on my scorecard. ********** Subject: Wizzo Band Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 02:35:53 -0700 From: George Mackenzie It's 25 years since Wizzo Band, is it the worst Roy Wood album of all time? I think not. I was just looking through old tapes and I found the Wizzo Band concert from 1977 and I decided to convert it on to mini disc and as I listening to it for the first time in along time, you actually notice how brilliant it is. Roy's arrangement on the brass is outstanding and I must say that I personally prefer to listen to the live version, rather than the studio album, it puzzles me why Roy didn't legally release it as a live album. Has anyone actually got a video of the concert and is there any out there who was actually at the concert. It would be interesting to here other peoples thoughts on Wizzo Band. Many thanks. ********** Subject: Re: Wizzo Band Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 13:22:55 -0700 From: Richard Messum George Mackenzie wrote: >It would be interesting to here other peoples thoughts on Wizzo Band. The Wizzo Band's album was Lynn's "Album of the week" some months ago, and listees' opinions were, as i recall, fairly evenly split between "unapproachable," "an acquired taste" and "superb" (with me firmly in the latter camp). I believe it was suggested at that time that, if "Super-active Wizzo" is ever digitally remastered, the live concert could be released as a bonus disc, but i don't know if this idea ever went anywhere. Anyone? p.s. the prog-rock band Marillion formed their own label a few years ago and has built up quite a lucrative on-line business by re-releasing all of their albums with bonus discs of live performances, out-takes, alternative versions, etc. In a perfect world... ********** Subject: Move...solo Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 22:17:38 -0500 From: "Stephen Simpson" If some of the individual former members of The Move were to release new works in 2003, this is what I would imagine they would do: Roy Wood - At long last, he should have a double live CD, featuring the Army, covering classics from the Move, ELO, Wizzard, Helicopters, and solo tunes, including two or three new ones. A highlight of the show would be Jeff Lynne duetting with Roy on "You and Me." Rick Nielsen would join the band for an encore, which would be, of course, "California Man." In late 2003, Roy and the Army would release an all-new studio album and by Christmas 2004, there would be a 5-disc Roy Wood box set, thankyouverrrrymuuuch. Jeff Lynne - Jeff should be helming a new ELO album in 2003 which could feature Richard Tandy on all tracks and, surprise, surprise, a few tracks featuring none other than Bev Bevan. And, Roy Wood would guest vocal on one song and play cello and bagpipe on another. (Longtime ELO fans would be left hoping that Jeff and Kelly Groucutt, Mik Kaminski, Hugh McDowell, and Mike de Albuquerque might still reconcile for a later album.) Other guests on the new ELO album would include Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins, members of Collective Soul, Tal Bachman, Tom Petty, and Dave Morgan. Bev Bevan - In addition to his work on the new ELO album, Bev could release an album of old rock and country standards, featuring vocals by Merle Haggard, Robin Zander, Buck Owens, and Brian Setzer, as well as  Brummies Ozzy Osbourne, Roy Wood, Carl Wayne, Robert Plant, Denny Laine, Justin Hayward, and Steve Winwood, and, of course, a special trio of Bev evan, Frankie Valli, and Johnny Cash singing "Elvira (Giddyup-a-oompapa-maw-maw)" which would win a Grammy. Carl Wayne - How about a new...brand new...all new material...Hollies album? Failing that, a solo album of Carl Wayne interpreting the greatest hits of the British Invasion. That would actually be pretty cool, I think. He could definitely add in one or two Move tunes to that lot. Trevor Burton - He could collaborate with Chris Squire, John Paul Jones, John Wetton, and Greg Lake for the heaviest album ever made. Seriously, I would really love to see Trevor record in 2003, either solo, or at least with a certain Mr. Wood and Mr. Bevan. Ace Kefford - It's been so long since I heard anything about Ace. I hope he's well and happy, and would love to hear something new from him. Did I miss anyone? I hope not. As cool as all of the above is, can you imagine a full-blown Move reunion album and tour?  Run and get the Fire Brigade! I've not heard "Inside My Life"...can someone tell me >wether Roy sings or plays on it? "Inside my life" is actually a very minor track on the LP and i had to re-listen to the album to even remember the song -- no hardship whatsoever, i assure you, as it's a lovely record. (I'm looking forward to the invention of the 36-hour day because i need that extra 12 hours just to listen to music.) Roy sings the backing vocal and plays saxophones, acoustic guitar and electric sitar. It even sounds like it could have been a Roy composition, but it's not, it was written by Jon Camp, Annie's old partner in crime from Renaissance. Roy is all over "Nature Boy" as well, sax, guitar, electric sitar and some kind of synthesizer (Moog?), but makes no vocal contributions -- Annie's is the only voice.
