Santa, who seems to be a tall gentleman with a British accent, has given me a real rarity to put up on The Move Online website: http://www.themoveonline.com (Sounds page) For a *very* limited time, this clip is being made available to the Move List and Move fans. It will be released in remastered form (full sonic quality!) next year. Please keep this clip to yourselves. If we're good, who knows what else is in Santa's bag... Merry Christmas! Lynn P.S. Well? What do you think?? ********** Subject: Roy in London...with special guest Date: Sun, 22 Dec 2002 11:57:04 -0800 From: Lynn Hoskins Don't know if anyone on the list caught this gig, but Roy Wood's Army performed last night at The Roadhouse in Covent Garden, Central London. Carl Wayne went to see his old friend play and ended up singing two Move songs with the band, "Fire Brigade" and "Flowers In The Rain." Carl's performance was unannounced (as he's still recovering) but as you can imagine, it went down a storm! ********** Subject: Re: Roy in London...with special guest Date: Sun, 22 Dec 2002 13:16:45 -0800 From: John DeSilva This is great news - it seems that Carl's recovery is progressing quite nicely if he's able to belt out a couple of Move classics onstage! Date: Sun, 15 Dec 2002 01:04:57 -0800 From: John Collins Hi everyone, Roy was in concert at the Oakengates theatre in Telford last night, and what an eventful night it was!! I arrived at ten past seven with my two stepdaughters Anita (12) and Elizabeth (11), who were attending their first ever concert. Ten minutes later, all the lights went out in the theatre! The only thing that was on was the emergency lighting. Apparently there had been a power cut, on that side of Telford. At Eight o'clock we were told that we could not stay in the theatre for safety reasons, and could we all come back in an hour! Roy had gone past us 20 minutes earlier, presumably to go to the pub. Well, over the other side of the road the pubs, chip shop and burger bars were doing a great trade, as the electric was on over there. Well, about 20 minutes later power was restored, and the show got under way an hour late. The support duo (list members will have to forgive me as I have forgotten their names) did a mixture of ballads and blues. I am sorry to say, they were not appreciated as much as some supports I have seen. I am not sure they were right choice, for this particular show. Roy and the Army came on at about 10 o'clock, and soon into gear as they rattled off California Man, Ballpark Incident and Fire Brigade. Roy addmitted he had been in the pub, but refused to go on the karoke! At this point I should explain, for the first time ever, I was not in spiting distance of Roy. In fact I will tell you now I was in the back row!!! As the seats at the back were tiered, it was a fantastic view. Being right in front of the stage means I can never see the whole of the Band properly. Being there obviously meant I could. I have never really appreciated this before, but the band is quite a spectacle. The whole band is full of energy and just and amazing sight. So back to the concert, and House of Love was up next and then into the medley. I think list members are used to the playlist by now. Big Girls Blues has now become a permanent song in the order, and it went down very well for a new one. It is really growing on me, and is getting better every time. Angel Fingers seemed to go down extremely well for some reason, must have been a lot of Wizzard fans in. Forever was absolutely brilliant, the best I had ever heard it, the whole of the band on backing vocals, really was a pleasure to hear it. I do like Forever though, did you know? (lol) All the Move numbers went down well. This was a predominantly older audience, not a pair of jeans in sight (not even me tonight) Flowers in the Rain, I Can Hear The Grass Grow, and Roy could have stopped singing Blackberry Way at any time. It must have been as load, as the Blues fans were, when I saw them play at Southampton last Saturday!! There was dancing in the aisles, and down the front, as Roy asked "Are You Ready To Rock?" Kiss me Goodnight Bodeceia was in there as well, which was well appreciated. The Naylor Twins did their rendition of Rescue me, but I was surprised they did not do their version of Santa Claus is coming to town, being a Christmas show. See my Baby Jive is always popular, but this was unbelievable, everybody (this was a complete sell out) in the audience sang and clapped with their hands in the air. The last time I saw so many hands in the air, was at the NEC in Birmingham, when Neil Diamond sang Sweet Caroline!! The audience were really up for it. Off went the Army for a few minutes, on their return Roy was asked if he knew any Christmas songs? The band played the opening few bars, (you know what) and the whole of the theatre stood up, honest!! It was an incredible sight. By the way if I had been 7 foot my head would have hit the ceiling, luckily I am 5 Foot 10! Over the last 20 years, I have seen Roy play this all over the Midlands, and at all times of the year (including Summer) and it always goes down well. But I have to say (in my personal opinion) I would have to go back to the symphony Hall in Birmingham in 1994 to see this as appreciated as it was tonight. Roy, and the band took their bows, Roy wished everyone a happy Christmas and off they went. The Army were superb, so full of life, always moving, and musically spot on, does it get any better than this I ask myself? They seemed to have a great time themselves. I suppose the question you are going to ask me is did the girls enjoy it? Well they have said they would like to go again! So there is your answer. I do know that 2 girls and one grown up have very sore throats at the moment! Happy Christmas Everyone. John Collins FOREVER - jcroywood.moonfruit.com ********** Subject: Re: New Move compilation Date: Sat, 14 Dec 2002 23:59:59 -0800 From: Mike Griffiths I'd be looking for great new photos of the Move on stage or in the studio! Any shots of Roy at the mixing desk would be great. Liner notes should offer new info and insights. I agree, that notes on each track by the band is a great way to go. Improved sound of course is much desired. Also, extended fades wherever possible and alternate versions are always welcome (I find that I can really appreciate the song even more hearing an alternate). Specific songs should include the hits and important singles and b sides but also these personal picks: Killroy Was Here, Walk Upon The Water, Useless Information, Hello Susie, Beautiful Daughter, Fields Of People, It Wasn't My Idea To Dance and The Words Of Aaron. ********** Subject: Re: XMAS T.O.T.P. 2 Date: Thu, 19 Dec 2002 02:07:35 -0800 From: "Andrew Ralph" George Mackenzie wrote: >No Woody on XMAS T.O.T.P 2 this year, however they are showing George >Cole & Denis Waterman how sad is that. Bob Coulter then speculated: >Isn't the MFTC reissue coming out in March? Hmmm... seems that we may be wise to psychologically prepare ourselves for a delay. But the MoveOnline website is still saying: "Sound clips and exclusive content from MFTC will be available on The Move Online towards the end of the year, together with competitions to win promotional items and the opportunity to pre-order in advance of the official release date. Keep checking back and subscribe to Useless Information for all the latest developments on The Move catalogue and Message From The Country." Well, I haven't seen much so far, which suggests there may be a delay. On a similar topic, namely the reissue of ELO2, the FTM website still says: "The forthcoming release will be the subject of an FTM special Bulletin (scheduled for December 2002) and will contain exclusive information, artwork, band interviews and competitions. There will also be the opportunity to pre-order and receive the limited edition version of ELO 2 in advance of the official release date." Haven't seen much so far on this either, which, again, suggests a delay. Now, I don't mind if the projects are delayed. After all, if something is worth waiting for, then I am happy to be patient. Let's get the very best re-issue we can. I'm sure Rob has been working hard sifting through thousands of tapes and spending hours in studios with the objective of getting the very best content for the re-issues. But no news is bad news. Cryptic reports such as "Normal service will be resumed in May 2003..." are not helpful. It would be nice if Rob could clarify the situation. Please? Many thanks David Burley ********** Subject: Re: Message From The Country Re-issue Date: Thu, 19 Dec 2002 16:23:30 -0800 From: "Tyler C.Sherman" "I'm waiting for the man...." (Velvet Underground 1967) Rob is THE man, and I agree with the old adage that good things come to those who wait. If MFTC and ELO II are delayed another few months because he has unearthed yet more cool stuff recently that will be included, then waiting will only increase my salivating for the enhanced sweetness of the good fruit it will produce. No, but the newsletter is delayed and will come out in January with exclusive interviews dedicated to the ELO 2 release. If I can get away from these tapes for a few days, I'll be able to put together a Move special edition about the forthcoming projects for 2003. > But no news is bad news. Or I'm overworked..... > Cryptic reports such as "Normal service will be resumed in May > 2003..." are not helpful. Not really. A Best Of is coming out that I'd rather not be coming out, but as it is contractually obliged, I'm going to make it worthwhile and of interest to the fans (the masses will buy it anyway so long as "the hits" are on there). Normal service means bringing quality to a catalogue that has long neglected by publishers, management, record companies and the band themselves. I've monitored 350 takes, songs, breakdowns, false starts, studio demos, live studio performances, restored the whole Marquee concert (both nights) - and I'm still only up to November 1968 (via a detour to 1972 for a take of California Man with a different Jeff Lynne verse and a "take it, Roy" end part). It progresses, slowly and with lots of obstructions, but it progresses. A stonking version of "See my baby jive," one of his best songs (IMO -- of course i've always had trouble expressing other people's opinions). But the most fabulousest and supercallifragilisticexpialidociousest part is ... to hear something new from our hero (even though it's nearly ten years old, it's new to me). Sheer magic. It was announced by presenter Philip Schofield, as the Christmas anthem, I wish it could be Christmas Everyday. It was a lively piece, as the camera angles kept switching. The presenters, guests and studio crew seemed to be enjoying themselves. More appearances to come hopefully :-) ********** Subject: Acid Gallery, Jason Crest, Grunt Futtock... As far as I know, the Acid Gallery, Jason Crest and Grunt Futtock tracks have never been reissued on CD (or legitimately in any format). 'Caroline' fared better - it appeared on 'The Very Best of The Casuals' (Spectrum 552 088-2, 1997). I don't know if it's still available, but it was a budget price CD I bought in MVC about three years ago. For anyone who, like me, is into late 60s pop, it's well worth £6 or so, with 20 tracks (also including 'Jesamine' and Top 40 follow-up 'Toy'). To quote from the insert notes: "...success in Britain thereafter [following the aforementioned singles] was non-existent, even with the great Roy Wood, the writer of all the hits by The Move, writing and producing 'Caroline' for The Casuals, although in continental Europe, the single was better appreciated." Not quite true. The Jason Crest version of "Lemon Tree" is available on "The Collected Works Of Jason Crest", released on Wooden Hill, WHCD006, and very good it is too! Dear Lynn, Maybe two of my topics already came up on the ELO- and/or Move-list, but I find this items so interesting and nice, I'll just give it a go. First: as many people might know, the Not Lame label (www.notlame.com) is a very good and interesting label. It releases lots of Move- or ELO-like music. For instance of course The Shazam (their latest, Tomorrow The World, is way up in my personal top 10 for 2002 (and 2003 probably, as the label of their latest record states the copyright year as 2003)). Another very interesting item released this year by NotLame is the 3-volumes pack of 66 songs called International Pop Overthrow 5. On disc number 2, track number 13, a musician called Paul Melancon sings a very nice and catchy song called "Jeff Lynne." I should think that every Jeff Lynne-aficionado should hear this songs, it's very lovely indeed. The song is also on his album Camera Obscura, released dec. 12, 2002; check out http://www.paulmelancon.com/ - you can listen to part of Jeff Lynne [the song not the man] in RealAudio). A snippet from his website: "Another gift to a younger self, this song at its heart is for the 'twelve-year old Paul,' playing air guitar in his room to ELO records to imaginary crowds of girls he's too shy to talk to. Not a song about Jeff Lynne so much as it's a song about people who listen to far too much pop music and what it can do to their psyche." The end-chorus of the song: "The feeling I get when you love me / doesn't compare to you leaving me / I will keep it all inside you'll never know that I / that I have tried / to be just like Jeff Lynne / just like Jeff Lynne / just like Jeff Lynne." Second: also on Not Lame is a band called Cherry Blossom Clinic. I do not know if this topic has already come up on the Move-list, but just like The Shazam, Cherry Blossom Clinic is required listening for Movers (http://www.cherryblossomclinic.com/). The band were first called Orange Helicopters, but, in their own words: "One of the names initially considered for Orange Helicopter was Cherry Blossom Clinic, the name of a classic Move song. We all liked the name and felt if fit the music, so we went with it." Third, on a more personal tone: I was the Runner-up #1 in this years Think Tank Contest. If I understood correctly, I would receive a picture of your cat, Lynn. I'm afraid I haven't received this magnificent prize yet. Do you still have a copy for me? You might send it by e-mail! I had taken My Girlfriend (now wife) to see one of her favourite band of the 70's, Brian Connolly and The Sweet. For those of you not familiar with the band they had hit after hit, in the Glam Rock era, their biggest hit being Blockbuster. During the concert Brian hung on to the microphone stand, and never moved from it all night. At the end of the concert, it became apparent why, as he was helped off stage by two people. I knew that he had not been well following a heart attack, but this was a shocker. I remember people just crying at they left the concert. On the 9th February 1997, Brian died of a heart attack.(www.thesweet.com) I think this Christmas we should not be wishing for lots of presents and a White Christmas, but continuing good health to all the artists we discuss on this list. Despite the odd health scare (and them getting on a bit lol) they are all in good health, and lets pray that continues. Good health is the most important thing of all, and that has been emphasised to me recently, as I have a cousin Martin who is dying of cancer, he celebrated his 40th birthday this year. I hope he can be in your prayers. Happy Christmas End of Useless Information #426 ******************************* [This digest is the copyright of the Move "Useless Information" Mailing List.
