I didn't reply because my own "particular" wish is to see something a bit different. One of the current "flavours of the month" in the UK is for singles box sets. I recently purchases The Stranglers UA singles 1977-79, Deep Purple singles 1968-76, and Two T. Rex sets (1972-75 & 1975-77). The sets comprise all original UK singles in 5" CD format, complete with original label design and housed in their original Picture Sleeves, or if they weren't issued in pic sleeves in the UK, rare Europeean or Japanese pic sleeves are replicated. The Deep Purple one is particularly striking in that some of the discs are on the black Parlophone label, yellow Harvest and Purple labels. This got me thinking - A 16 disc set could include all the original singles plus a couple of bonuses. Night Of Fear and Grass Grow on Deram, the original Regal Zonophones from Flowers to Brontosaurus, including Something Else EP, also including Cherry Blossom / Vote For Me, the two Fly singles, plus the Three Harvest singles with "Ella James" / No Time as a bonus (seeing thart was a scheduled release), and the Do Ya / No Time single. With Rob / Gill doing so well getting cross label co-operation, this could be more of a probability than previously thought possible. Getting original label designs onto CD's is not difficult either (except , again if the labels themselves make it difficult). I myself have the Thrillington CD on Regal Zonophone, of course the ELO reissue had a wonderful Harvest label. A christmas present for next year or just a flight of fancy? I'm a big fan of record labels (the designs - I mean) and I'm pleased that the record label as an art-form is making a comeback The labels on the First Light release were the icing on the cake for me. Give your love for Christmas Paul PS three postings in as many days and I used to be a serial lurker! ********** Subject: Re: The one reissue I'd like to see Date: Tue, 24 Dec 2002 15:56:27 -0800 From: "Andrew Footman" Funny i said this to Rob last month too!I also said to do the mini LP sleeve CD's like the Jap ones, but this time of the master tapes if-when found. I think Rob has found a lot of the tapes now but there are still some missing. If they still exist i'm sure he will get them too! There's no problem with any cross-label cooperation. With regard to The Move, the rights remain with and are administered by the group's original publishers, who I now have an excellent working relationship with. A limited edition numbered box set of coloured vinyl singles with original labels and facsimiles of European, UK and Japanese picture sleeves was proposed to support a definitive hits collection CD, closely followed by the oft-delayed remaster series. Sadly, it didn't happen - it needed The Move ex-members in agreement and demonstrating unity. AS that was not possible at the time, the publishers have a contractual obligation to be seen to be administrating the catalogue and so the license moved to Union Square Records who issued their universally loathed "greatest hits" CD. The ex-members often forget they don't own their songs. It's interesting watching the catalogue detriorate over the years once Secunda and Arden (or any management) were removed. With no one fighting The Move's corner - least of all the band - you are left with a legacy of greatest hits and best of's. Speaking of which, with regard to Roy Wood and all his work since The Move ended in 1972, there has been total cross-label cooperation (Harvest, EMI, Warner Bros., Sanctuary, etc, etc) and a positive willingness to recover, restore and release his material for over two years now - as regular readers of the list will know from some of the previews I've posted. I've spent 5 years recovering all of Roy's stereo masters for every album and single release (except Rock 'n' Roll Winter which was deliberately mastered to mono). I've got back all of the multitracks except for On The Road Again (but we have got the two unreleased tracks from that album), Superactive Wizzo and Starting Up. There's some incredible worldwide remastered and exclusive releases tentatively scheduled to begin in March 2003 and run through until March 2004, ending with a 4-CD boxset. All of which could raise Roy's profile, get his long-neglected work and musical career onto CD and get him out of ever having to consider accepting gigs such as the Roadhouse again. As I've said many times before, we shall see.... Have a great Christmas and watch out for the continuation of the First Light series in 2003. Rob ********** Subject: I Wish It Could Be in the USA Date: Tue, 24 Dec 2002 20:39:42 -0800 From: David Gofstein Best of the season to you all in list land: It's really interesting to us USA listdudes to read about Roy's beloved status as Mr. Christmas over there. It's obvious from reading all of the list's notes that "IWICBCE" is THE song of the season every year. Probably to the point of you guys being sick to death of the darn thing!! But do my Euro-brothers know that the song is ABSOLUTELY unknown over here in the States? I'm not exagerating a lick. It's only us Roy and/or Wizzard fans who know the tune at all. In fact, I believe that it possibly might never have even been released on these shores! (Anybody out there know for sure?) Go figure.... Merry Berries Gang!!!! ********** Subject: Re: I Wish It Could Be in the USA Date: Tue, 24 Dec 2002 23:58:20 -0800 From: kakman In Dallas/Fort Worth/Denton area of Texas, IWICBCE gets at least one airing a year on 90.1 FM KERA's twelve hour Christmas Spectacular and Holiday Quiz, hosted by Glen Mitchell, going strong at 29 years, now. So that must count for something. Kevin Kunreuther Dallas TX ********** Subject: Re: I Wish It Could Be in the USA Date: Wed, 25 Dec 2002 10:08:23 -0800 From: "Tyler C.Sherman" Dave & all, To my knowledge, it was assigned a catalog # by UA and slated for release here in the states but withdrawn. I have in my personal collection a white label test pressing of it with "R & R Winter" as the "B" side. No catalog # appears on this disc, in fact, the printed info on the label is scant and quite faint. I drag it out and put it in my juke box every year. I hear "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" occasionally on alternative and college radio stations this time of year. And, yes, it is a real shame folks on these shores are largely unaware of it. To help remedy this, I put together a CD collection of obscure/unusual Christmas songs, prominently featuring "IWICBCE", and gave away copies to friends & family this year. Every little bit of exposure helps, I'm theorizing. We can only keep hoping Roy will one day get his due here in the USA. Merry Christmas to all... Wizzards, Tyler ********** Subject: Re: I Wish It Could Be in the USA Date: Wed, 25 Dec 2002 11:31:18 -0800 From: Richard Messum MuchMusic, Canada's version of MTV, plays the video of IWICBCE every year on their Christmas Day program, which must really baffle those viewers who tune in to see the latest gangsta rap versions of "O holy night" and "Santa Claus is coming to town." But, as Tyler said, every little bit of exposure helps, and if even *one* teenager, upon seeing that video, is induced to seek out some Wizzard CDs, then the cause is furthered and we all win. Hope everyone is having a magical day. Happy Christmas, you lot. ********** Subject: Re: Woody live in London last night? How the hell did I miss this? From what I am surmising about this particular gig, Roy may have, initially, not wanted to let too many of the die-hard devoteds know about this one and come away feeling less than satisfied. You know, one of those, "sorry about the surroundings, did it for the money" type situations (cabaret, again). What made it change from another ordinary show up and pocket the money gig into something a little more unexpected and special was Charlie Wayne's unannounced appearance and participation. Those occurrences cannot be pencilled in advance, you know. Just knowing that Charlie is up and around and singing again is Christmas present enough for this list member. Well this is something we all hoped would happen just a pity no one knew about this gig as I live not far from London I would have definitely gone up there. The Roadhouse is nothing more than a pub really so I think Kevin's assumptions of the venue and the reasons are probably correct. And now to hear that not only did Carl perform Flowers in the Rain and Fire Brigade but also ICHTGG one of my all time faves but Blackberry Way AND I Wish it Could be Xmas !! What a terrific night it must have been but also excellent that Carl is feeling so much better to be able to sing with Roy which must make up for the disappointment to us fans not being there. Maybe in the future they will get together again and maybe with Ace Trevor and Bev ....... well I can but dream it is Christmas after all !! Sounds like early 65-66 Who before delicious guitar solo kicks in and fades away (Lynn , you tease!); it is a nice bit, must have been something close to what early Mod version of Move was like before "Night Of Fear" was recorded and released. The sounds page is great; if only the BBC "Colour Me Pop" segment would be allowed back online. Rather disappointing to have stayed up for this which was a shortened IWICBCED (what else!) actually cut down to two verses, a couple of choruses and the 'OK you lot' bit at the end. The customary 'cut aways' to audience and presenters making merry, further ate into Roy's time on screen but there was time enough to see that most of the Army were there and appeared to be having a good time! First, my feeble excuse: Just as I was getting this little project off the ground, I found out that I had to move due to some big renovation project at my apartment complex. I have a bad back, so the stress of moving totally flattened me. Yes, I realize that I won't get much sympathy since I'm sure at least half of the members of this list have a bad back, too. But, that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it. ;) Second, I need someone who has a CD burner to volunteer to make copies for "tree" people, much like what was done for the Woody Christmas "Tree." When I first posted about this, I got a bunch of e-mails from people offering to be "tree" people (thank you!) so we'll be able to get this going real quick. My aching back apologizes profusely for the delay. ********** Subject: Rock Legends Speak Highly of Another Date: Tue, 24 Dec 2002 09:06:59 -0800 From: AllyGourlay A few weeks ago I was asked to present my radio show at a live gig for charity in Dunfermline. The gig actually took place last Friday and was headlined by local rock legends Nazareth. A crowd of over 1300 filled the venue, and boy can Naz still rock, and Dan McCaffrety can still reach those notes. The thing is that althiough Nazareth don't have hits in the UK any more (like Roy), they're absolutely huge in Europe and Japan, and this gig was the last of their World Tour, so I was absolutely delighted and honoured when they asked me to present "Art School Dancing" live. Anyway, I plugged three Roy tunes during my sets, including Boadicea. After the gig when all the performers (including myself) were having a couple of beers, Pete Agnew, bassist with Naz shouted over to Dan McCafferty "Look at this T-shirt" pointing to my Roy Wood's Army shirt. (Everyone else in the crew had Naz shirts). Dan then asked me "What was that last Roy Wood track you played!". Anyway, the upshot was that we had to go back into the hall (the gear wasn't being removed until the following morning) and plug everything back in so that McCafferty could hear Boadicea, which he loved. We chatted and got drunk for a couple of hours during which time they told me that The Move's "Looking On" album was a huge early influence on them, and they talked of their admiration for Roy Wood with the highest regard. The upshot is they'll be coming into my radio show on 8th January to talk all about the glam and prog rock days. ********** Subject: Americana festival in July Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 17:21:54 -0800 From: Silvereagleuk Don't forget that all you Woody fans in the UK can get to see 'the main man' live at the massive Americana International festival on July 13th... (re-post) Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 18:20:42 -0800 From: Lynn Hoskins A few new subscribers have asked if I wouldn't mind dipping into the archives and sharing some posts of the past. This was one of the first I thought of, probably because of the John Lydon story. Only Joe would have a John Lydon/Move story. (This post goes back so far, we can see Joe's old e-mail address!) ---- Subject: God Save The Move!! Date: Wed, 11 Feb 1998 05:21:32 +0000 From: birdcage In 1990. I was lucky enough to be part of a band that toured the UK. The group made quite a splash and played gigs all points north and south of the British Isle including a stop at a lovely little place called Edward's Number 8 in Birmingham. I told all of the record company weasels that if anyone knew anyone who had ever been a member of The Move to PLEASE invite them to the gig - I'd love to meet them. Well... to my amazement and immeasurable delight, in walks a Mr. Trevor Burton with Steve Gibbons and party in tow. Trevor looked great; aging very well I'm happy to report. Still a rocker. It seemed to me that the locals were more impressed with the presence of Gibbons. When the time was right, I pulled Trevor aside and told him that I was a HUGE fan of The Move and that it was a great pleasure and honor to meet him. He seemed genuinely touched and, a bit surprised that a guy from the States would feel this way about his old band. He spoke affectionately about The Move and about Roy Wood in particular. He told me that every year he tries to reunite the original band to play at a Birmingham hospital charity fete - he said that they've come very close to doing it, but so far, no soap. I've been thinking about Roy Wood's remark in the latest MOJO Magazine where he said that the trademark Move bass sound was really the creation of Trevor and carried on by Rick Price and Roy himself after Burton left the group. Obviously Roy feels that Burton was an extremely good bass player to give him this accolade - yet his contribution to the original band is rarely discussed in these pages. The more that I read about the original band, it seems that he and Roy were very close. Roy obviously respected Trevor's musical abilities. If nothing else, their vocal contribution to Hendrix' "You Got me Floatin'" would be enough to secure a cozy little spot in R&R history (heaven). If the bass sound was created by Trevor - what would have been his last recorded song with The Move? "Blackberry Way?" Maybe. Did he make any contribution to "Shazam?" (or the Wood originals left off "Shazam?") Every day... I wonder. And for the chap who said that he didn't like the "Something Else" EP because it sounded bad and things were out of tune well... you just don't get it, my friend. I waited FOR YEARS just to hear this recording. It is a monument to the group's early years and it is amazing, given the group's situation, that it even EXISTS let alone sounds as good as it does. C'mon! Good UK story number two: In 1977, I was in London in hot pursuit of the "Something Else" EP. I couldn't find it anywhere! I met a fellow who assured me that he knew a guy who would have the record for sale FOR SURE. Probably about 40 pounds. He gave me the guy's name and number on a piece of paper. John Lydon. Hey, this is the guy from The Sex Pistols (who had just been banned from playing the entire country thanks, in large part, to "God Save The Queen")! He said yeah. John's a HUGE Move fan. Good taste... good taste. For my UK friends - Lydon was recently on a US TV show called "Judge Judy." It's a real life courtroom show that pits people against each other in a small court (under $5,000.00) action. The court is presided over by a 60-ish whirlwind known as Judge Judy - probably the "Johnny Rotten" of real judges. Very entertaining. Lydon was being sued by drummer Robert Williams for alledgedly striking him in a Japanese restaurant and firing him from a tour with no notice. Lydon won the suit. Judge Judy yelled at Williams and seemed to really like Lydon despite a few attempts at bullying the court. He would fix his trademark glare at her... and she would glare right back. Amazing. And the whole time I'm thinking, "he's a HUGE Move fan." HA!
