How do I setup my computer to dial Eskimo North?
- Windows 95/98/M.E. -- http://www.eskimo.com/support/Win95.html
- Windows NT/2000 -- Same as Windows 95/98/M.E. setup, apart from the following:
- Check the "Security" tab of the dialup entry to be sure "Accept any authentication including clear text" is selected.
- Some versions have problems with "IP header compression". If it's failing to connect, try turning this off.
- Macintosh -- http://www.eskimo.com/support/MacOS.html

How do I connect to Eskimo's shell server?
The shell server here at Eskimo North is simply "eskimo.com".
From a Windows machine (95/98/ME/NT/2000/...), you should be able to use the "telnet" application that came with Windows to connect in the following manner:
Start / Run / "telnet eskimo.com" / OK
We prefer SSH (Secure SHell) implementations for encrypted sessions (meaning that anyone "tapping" the line would see jibberish rather than what you're actually typing) for added security. This can be downloaded from sites such as SSH.com, OpenSSH.com, or FreeSSH.org.
General Questions
How can I change my shell/email/news password?
To change your password, you'll need to be connected to the shell server (shown above). From the "Main Command?" prompt:
- Use '!' to get into shell.
- Then type "passwd".
If you get "Permission Denied", this means we are adding/deleting users and have temporarily removed permissions to prevent corruption of the password file or NIS database. Wait a couple of hours and try again (adding/deleting users is a lengthy process).
If you get "Password file busy", that means someone else is changing their password, wait a couple of minutes and try again.
If this password is forgotten, we cannot read it back to you, as it's encrypted on this end with a one-way encryption scheme. You'll need to call into the support telephone lines for a quick voice verification, and after such a check, we may be able to reset it to something of your choice.
How can I change my 56k/ISDN dialup password?
Only support staff can change this. It will remain in the assigned format to ensure that non-customers cannot break into your dialup id, and will be changed if your account expires. We can change such passwords for security reasons -- if for example someone else learns your password and you want it changed -- and other such scenarios.
If this password is forgotten, you'll need to call into the support telephone lines, and after a quick verification process (and only after such process), we should be able to read it back to you for your notes. We would not change the password in this case.
