C.G. Jung's theories of the Self and its impact on the individuation  process of his adult patients have been applied for many years to the analysis  of children. In tonight's lecture, you will be introduced to the major aspects of child analysis that  include: an historical overview of the development of child analytical psychology; the theories of Michael Fordham, Erich Neumann, and Jungian sandplay as developed by Dora Kalff; conceptual basis, aims and therapeutic issues in child analysis; the child-therapist relationship; and the role of the parents during the child's treatment.

Class 1 – Thursday, October 12: Interpretation of Drawings
Geri Grubbs and Susan Jenkins

A series of diagnostic drawings made by four children while in treatment will be presented and analyzed, with a focus on the child’s portrayal of internal trauma, sense of self and self in the family system. Presenting problems include death of a parent and child sexual abuse.

Class 2 – Thursday, October 19: Guided Imagery and Fantasy Methods
Geri Grubbs

Group will experience and learn how to use specific guided imageries with children. Included will be “The Rosebush” and “Boat in the Storm” imagery and drawings. Research findings on “The Rosebush” drawing that suggest a protective defense of the Self will be presented and discussed.

Class 3 – Thursday, October 26: A Jungian Approach to Conjoint Therapy
Susan Jenkins

Floor fantasy play that include themes of mother, father, death, birth, love and hate will be presented and discussed. This floor method is particularly therapeutic with children who are not accustomed to creative expression, are withdrawn or inexperienced in shared play.

Class 4 – Thursday, November 2: Introduction to Sandplay Therapy

Class will learn how to conduct a sandplay session and what to look for in a series of sandtrays made by a child. The sandplay process of an 11-year old, spiritually evolved girl will be presented, in addition to the meaning and significance of the mandala as an image of the Self and when it reveals a protection against the “perils of the soul.”

Class 5 – Thursday, November 9: When the Dark Side Becomes Constellated

Group will learn about the affect of sexual abuse on the developing psyche and how it is revealed in the sandplay process, based upon research findings from Grubbs’ doctoral dissertation. We will then view the sandplay process of a 10-yr. old sexually abused boy that includes images of the archetypal defense gone awry and the drive of the Self to become whole.

Class 6 – Thursday, November 16: Case Presentations

Child cases will be presented by those who wish, and discussed by the group as a whole. Presentations should include creative expressions in the form of drawings, sandplay, fantasy, or floor play. Sign-ups for these presentations will be done during the first class meetings.

Geri Grubbs, Ph.D., is a practicing Jungian analyst in Woodinville, Washington, and a training analyst on the board of the North Pacific Institute for Analytical Psychology. She has been practicing depth psychology since 1987 and is a graduate of the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich. Geri has lectured and taught widely on dream interpretation and sandplay therapy. Dr. Grubbs is presenting this class with Susan Jenkins, Ph.D.
