Tatum photoThe evening lecture will consist of an overview of Jung’s concept of the collective unconscious as represented in archetypal images from throughout the world and, as Jung wrote, back through the grey mists of time. Imagery of these ageless themes will be presented through slide pictures which will include Jung’s carvings at Bollingen and sandplay work of children. In reflecting on this material and images from the Archive for Research in Archetypal Symbolism, we will explore the universal creative impulse through which humankind has sought to bring unknown possibilities to light by means of art and story.

The Double Quaternity: Image, Idea, Insight

Workshop: Saturday, March 12, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Good Shepherd Center, Room 202, 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N., Seattle
$50 members, $70 nonmembers

In this workshop we will be looking at how a symbol previously unknown to us can impact our lives. We will use Jung’s concept of the Double Quaternity, a symbol of totality found in the Mysterium Coniunctionis (CW 14) and the Red Book, as an example. Amplification will incorporate imagery from prehistory, ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, as well as the transcultural traditions of the East and the West. We will consider the connection of the Double Quaternity in conjunction with Jung’s ideas as represented by the Egyptian Ogdoad and the Gnostic Sophia; as found in the opposites; in alchemy and in the totality of the mandala. The work of Jung and a wide variety of Jungians, art historians and archaeologists will allow us to explore this rich material through imagery and ancient poetry. Sandplay pictures will be included. The workshop will end with the personal construction of mandalas using collage materials, which will be supplied.

Learning Objectives for Lecture:

  1. To apply Jung’s concept of the collective unconscious to personal or clinical understanding, including Sandplay.
  2. To understand how archetypal imagery represents the contents of the collective unconscious, applicable from prehistory to current times.
  3. To know how to use the resources available for researching symbols.

Learning Objectives for Workshop:

  1. To be able to interpret symbolic material in conjunction with clinical practice, including Sandplay, or personal work.
  2. To learn how to amplify clinical or personal material.
  3. To experience how symbolic imagery can be made relevant through the making of a mandala collage or drawing.
