Spruce Stump Chair This chair in bloom
I needed to take out a small spruce because its roots were threatening nearby rhododendrons. Since it was located in a good spot, just in from a main path, I decided to make a chair out of the stump. I cut it off four feet above the ground, and then made a second cut, sloping back at a good seat angle, part way through at the thirty inch level. Then I sawed down from the top to make the seat back angle. 5/4 cear decking provided the finished seat, back, and arms. (I first attached a piece of 3/4 inch exterior plywood to the stump to tie the finished seat together.) The footrest is 2x6 cedar mounted on a 4x4 set in concrete. Finish is a UV protective stain.
