Moving a Large Azalea

Moving a Large Rhododendron

Moving a 40 year old Chinese Witchhazel

Evergreen azaleas can grow huge rootballs. I cut around this one with the metal handled spade and then added a piece of iron pipe to it to gain lifting leverage. (This would probably break a wooden handle.) Raising the plant a little at a time, I pushed planks under it for greater leverage and a smooth sliding platform.

With a chain and a rope, I pulled the azalea out of the hole on the long planks and onto the cart. Once loaded, it was so heavy I could only move it a few feet at a time. It took two days to reach the new planting site.
