Bridge of Glass and
Thea Foss Esplanade
The Bridge of Glass is part of the Museum of Glass complex on the downtown Tacoma waterfront Thea Foss Esplanade.
Among its features are a wall and ceiling of glass creations
by Dale Chihuly and other area artists.
You can ride around various outdoor displays and climb a series of zigzag switchbacks that connect the esplanade with the bridge.
With the iconic glassworks hotshop chimney in the background, I try to accompany the visual art with sound.
The 21st Street Bridge (I-509) crosses the east end of the esplanade, with another park in development across the waterway.
Many of the old fishing related warehouses have been transformed into restaurants and other stops for visitors. This is outside the Foss Waterway Seaport, a museum of local maritime history. Other museums on or accessible from the esplanade include the Museum of Glass, Washington State History Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, Children's Museum, and LeMay's American Car Museum.
The esplanade is line with public art, some of it created from historic maritime equipment.
Thea's Park lies at the end of the two-mile esplanade.
