Oneonta Gorge has a slot canyon like those in the southwest, except this is in a rain forest rather than a desert.
The trail starts at Oneonta Tunnel on the Historic Columbia Gorge Highway. Steps lead down to the creek and the trailhead. Don't expect a trail because there isn't one. The creek is the trail.
Almost as soon as you start your hike, you reach the large log jam.
It is slippery when wet andcan be unstable.
After the logjam, the trail is smooth--and wet. The water varies from about six inches deep to knee to chest deep, depending on the season. The water is very cold, so it is best to go in warm weather.
In less than a mile, Oneonta Falls appears at the end of the gorge.
If you want to dry out, from near the same starting place you can hike to other falls nearby, such as Triple Falls and Horsetail Falls. At Ponytail Falls, the trail goes under along a ledge in the rock, under the water.
