The ride west out of Kellogg takes begins among the mine tailings.. The toxic material has graded into fenced mountains for safe keeping. Other mining and railroad residue was used as ballast for the trail itself. The area has been designated as a Superfund site, and the project pays for regular paving and sealing of the trail to protect its users.
You soon ride past the site of the lead smelter and the town descriptively named Smelterville.
But the slag piles soon give way to wetlands and greenery.
The Coeur d'Alene River then reappears, and you cross it,
and it seems like you have entered a different world.
