I can relate! When I had to have a trach installed in 1982, I
was terrified of having a machine breathing for me. I fought against
the vent at first. Then I adapted to it and became more comfortable
with it.
Also, there are some very good types of vents that are meant to
be used overnight while sleeping. The most important thing to consider
is, how can sleeping with a vent improve my life and make me feel
better? It is very important to be properly ventilated to keep your
blood rich in oxygen and free of excess CO2. Years ago, before I had a
vent, I was tired easily and my mental function impaired by lack of
oxygen and excess CO2.
I don't know all the particulars, but I think that you should
look as a vent as a friend instead of an adversary or threat.
Good luck!
