Emerson In-Exsufflator

Description:

The In-Exsufflator (Cough Machine) assists patients in clearing retained
broncho-pulmonary secretions by gradually applying a positive pressure to
the airway, then rapidly shifting to a negative pressure. This rapid shift
in pressure, via a face mask or mouthpiece produces a high expiratory flow
rate from the lungs, simulating a cough. This technique is referred to as
"Exsufflation With Negative Pressure", (E.W.N.P.) This non-invasive
technique is clinically proven to be effective.

Those who might benefit from the use of the In-Exsufflator include any
patient with an ineffective ability to cough due to poliomyelitis, muscular
dystrophy, myasthenia gravis or other neurologic disorders with some
paralysis of the respiratory muscles, such as spinal cord injury. It may
also be used to treat ineffective cough due to other bronchopulmonary
diseases, such as emphysema, cystic fibrosis, bronchial asthma and
bronchiectasis.

Use of the In-Exsufflator is particularly important for patients on
non-invasive ventilation, since suctioning is difficult without a trach
tube. Utilizing E.W.N.P. enhances or replaces the patient's natural removal
of secretions.

The In-Exsufflator comes in two models: The 2-CA which can automatically
cycle from positive to negative pressure or can be manually cycled and the
2-CMH which is only cycled manually.
