The epiglottis, which plays a big part with controlling air intake when
using a cuffless trach, can be held closed when inhaling so you
can get a full breath from the vent. When you exhale the epiglottis
lets the air out. You can also let air out while inhaling, which is how
you talk without a one-way valve.
Okay, I'll state the obvious for those who don't know what on earth I'm
talking about. The epiglottis is the part of the throat used when holding
your breath, or "frog-breathing" (for those who don't use the vent 24hrs,
frog-breathing allows you to build up one full breathj, by sucking in
air,
holding that breath, and sucking more until the lungs are full, then
letting
it out. It helps you yell loudly, also.).
