Dear Jean,
Here in Nebraska, I had to get a $20, ooo computer approved as a
augmentive communication device so that Medicare would purchase it. (It was
called an Eyegaze System and the man could type using his eye movements)
It took lots of phonecalls and letters. The Project of Assistive
Technology here in Nebraska had a woman named Alicia Oeastman that gave me
lots of advice. I see that she is still there as the policy and funding
coordinator. Maybe she can direct you to the person to contact ion her
state. You can tell her I referred you. She will remember David's Eyegaze
Computer and me, Cindy Sandene.
My advice is to find out the name of the person in your state that
is responsible for the approval you need. Make an appointment to to talk
with this person. get them on your side. Let the makers of the portable
ventilator know what you are trying to do. It is of benefit to them and they
might help you , too
Get people to know of you and your child on a personal basis. I am
sure Kristen has her own way of charming people so that they want to help,
Never lose your temper with anyone that you need to help you.
Believe me, I know how frustrating it is to wait on paperwork and red tape.
This may take some time. Don't set a deadline. Ventilate privately.
Contact Easter Seals. They like to do human interst stories.
Contact the news media. Again , shed a positive light on people
that can help you
You will be able to do it, if the machine is safe and you care
enough to carry it through. It just takes one advocate to push these cases
through.
Follow every lead. I ended up with several manilla folders of
correspondence I was done.
good luck! Cindysan13(AT)AOL.com
