Annette,

My trach changes used to be a pain for me too. That's when I
still had a cuffed trach. I used to have to go to the ER and take my
chances with whatever doctor I could get. What a bummer! Some doctors
have the touch of a mechanic. It always hurt and bled a lot.

Things got much better when I switched to a cuffless trach in
'87. The cuff at the bottom of a trach tube is what causes most of the
resistance and tissue trauma resulting in bleeding. My ENT taught my
mother how to change my trach, so now she does it. It sure beats dealing
with some strange, clumsy doctor in the ER.
