It is a lot harder, for sure, to keep my neck warm now that I have a trach.
Fortunately here in Massachusetts it doesn't get as cold as it does back in
Iowa and Minnesota where I used to live. Back there I wore down jackets or
coats. Here it gets cold enough, but I don't have to wear down. I have a
couple of nice light weight but warm jackets that I wear. (For me wool
doesn't work because a wool coat is too heavy.) I can keep the neck open so
it doesn't rub or pull at my trach tube. I usually wear some kind of sweater
or sweatshirt under it, and under that I wear Cuddle Duds which keep me warm
and cozy. When the wind is blowing on a cold winter night, I put the collar
of my jacket up in the back, but again--the front part of my neck gets cold.
I wear a hat or ear muffs because I keep my hair cut short and I can't stand
to have my ears cold. I also wear good mittons--I find gloves too cold. I'm
out almost every single day of the year so I have to know how to dress warm.
