Carol,
Your advice to Paula is good about getting publicity. However, have you
or anyone on this list tried to use the media (newspapers, radio, TV) to
report on these topics? I have and I have found time and again, they
don't care about disability issues. It's outrageous but so true. I write
a disability column. If it's at all controversial, it's simply not
printed. How many disability columnists do you have in your major
newspapers? None I bet. I'm sure you have a columnist for the gays,
Blacks, and who knows what else. Jerry Lewis single handedly got Dianne
Piastro removed from the St. Louis Post Dispatch for questioning MDA
about where the money goes. I am sooo disheartened. Yesterday, Mona
Charen, syndicated columnist, wrote an editorial lambasting the recent
decision in New Jersey over gays being allowed to adopt. She elaborated
by saying it's as ludicrous to allow gays to adopt as it would be to give
a child to someone insane OR QUADRIPLEGIC! I am incensed that this woman
had the audacity to imply that someone with a spinal cord injury is unfit
to be a good parent. Who will respond to Ms. Charen? I will attempt to,
but I know my concerns will go unheard, they usually do. My goodness, I
even contacted our Ind. spinal cord consumer group but I truly doubt that
they will say boo about it. What has happened to Paula and Jodi is simply
unconscionable and yet it happens every day. I hope and pray you're right
and Paula and Jodi can get some one, any one, to champion their cause. We
all need to be more vocal on these issues before it is too late. I'm
sorry to be such a downer at this holy time of year. You are all in my
prayers. Merry Christmas!
Val
