Friends:
As we approach April 22, the day now widely advertised for the markup of
HR
3206 in the House Judiciary Committee, we very much need the assistance
of
all people who are concerned about the impacts of significant amendments
to
the Fair Housing Act. Despite some false alarms in March, we believe
this
is really it! You can help in two ways:
1. We need to flood Republican members of the Judiciary Committee with
calls concerning H.R. 3206. A list of Republican members and their
Congressional office numbers appears below. The calls should come from
as
many individual members of the Coalition as possible (regardless of
whether
you are a constituent), and can be very simple:
"My name is David Black, with [name of your organization]. We strongly
oppose H.R. 3206 and any amended versions of H.R. 3206. How do you plan
to
vote during the Judiciary Committee markup on April 22?"
2. We are assembling a list of "harmful results" that would flow from
H.R.3206 (or the Canady amendment in the nature of a substitute). These
can be both real life examples or hypothetical cases resulting from the
passage of
the bill. For instance: "United Cerebral Palsy seeks to establish a
group
home for three residents in a single family neighborhood in Cincinnati.
Another small group home for people with mental retardation is located
1/2
mile away. The zoning department declines to issue a variance or
special
use permit because the local "spacing ordinance" dictates that doing so
would create overconcentration."
Your real life cases or hypotheticals should be sent to Katie Corrigan
at
the Georgetown Federal Legislation Clinic. Her e-mail address is:
corrigak(AT)law.georgetown.edu Her fax number is: 202/662-9682
In order to be effective, these must be received by close of business on
Monday, April 20.
