I just read Blane's "words of wisdom" regarding teaching caregivers
proper vent techniques and I couldn't agree more. He is so right when he
says the medical profession resents taking information from people with
disabilities. It is imperative for all of us to be knowlegeable about our
medical conditions. I am appalled when disabled persons don't understand
their conditions and know what medicines to avoid. The wrong treatment
can kill you. Many polio survivors who were in iron-lungs & have
respiratory problems shouldn't be given oxygen. Yet, they don't know this
and worst of all the doctors and most pulmonologists don't know it. Thank
God for Gini Laurie and the Gazette for always trying to educate us.
Narcotics suppress respiration. Yet, doctors have tried to medicate me
with them even though I can't have them. My pdr is my bible. Blane is
right, we must continue to educate the medical "professionals," our lives
may depend on it.
