Dart on IDEA
Remarks by Justin Dart, Collin Jacobs Press Conference, July 14, 1998
I am honored to be here today with the beautiful Jacobs family and so
many colleagues in justice. Jill Jacobs is a magnificent advocate for
people with disabilities.
Separated but equal is not equal. This is a fundamental principle of
American democracy.
I believe Collin Jacobs has the right as an American citizen to attend a
mainstream public school, if that is what he and his family decide.
How can people with disabilities learn how to live and work in the
mainstream unless they are educated in the mainstream?
How can people without disabilities overcome obsolete attitudes and learn
to live and work with people with disabilities if there are segregated
schools?
President Bush estimated that it costs this nation 200 billion dollars a
year to keep people with disabilities segregated out of the mainstream.
Collin Jacobs has an inalienable right to go to a mainstream school. It
will be profitable for every American. It will improve the quality of
life of every American.
It's the right thing to do. Everyone wins.
Americans! Let us unite in keeping the sacred pledge: liberty and
justice for all.
Justice for All means Real Power for All,
Real Choices for All, Real Access to the Dream for All
