It was a crazy season with the lockout crammed 66 game season - and Dallas just tried to survive it with their older players and not incur any serious injuries. They were plagued by minor injuries during the season and a number of players (including surprisingly Dirk Nowitzki) not being in shape for the start of the season. They never did find their rhythm but did manage to finish with the 7th spot in the Western Conference, which left them facing the younger Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the playoffs (a re-match of last year's Western Conference Finals). Since I'm working on this during breaks of today's (Sunday's) 4 playoff games, I'm not going into a rehash of the season (ie, the evil Laker plan that worked [big baby 32-year-old Lamar Odom], not retaining Tyson Chandler (which I agreed with - 3 years from now you would have been complaining about his contract) or J.J. Barea (knew he would get a crazy contract), pleasant surprises of Delonte West and Vince Carter, nice find of Brandan Wright (remember Dallas tried to get him a number of years ago), ... - one deserving note of who was Dallas' best and most consistent player this season: kudos to Shawn Marion). So the real season has begun and we'll see if the regular season really was meaningless and the Mavs find the magic they had last year or if the playoffs reflect the regular season and Dallas has a short postseason. Game 1 was highly entertaining with Oklahoma City and hopefully it is a good series with the Mavs coming out on top. April 28: Game 1 - Dallas at Oklahoma City The first quarter started with the refs not calling much (Dirk Nowitzki was hacked a number of times with no calls, but to be fair the refs (even the dreaded Joey Crawford) were fairly consistent as Russell Westbrook also got hacked several times with no calls [for a bit it seemed that they were only calling fouls when the player wasn't a big name]). Oklahoma City opened the game with consecutive jumpers, but Dallas then went on a 9-3 mini-run to take a 9-7 lead with 9 minutes left. The teams traded leads over the next few minutes as neither team was able to make a run. Jason Kidd stole the ball and Dallas had a 2-on-1 break and the white hot Jason Terry nailed a 3-pointer (yes, on a break) to complete a 12-2 run to give Dallas a 23-15 lead with 3 minutes remaining. But Kevin Durant got aggressive and scored Oklahoma City's next 7 points (with one Dallas free throw the only Mavs point) to pull Oklahoma City within 22-24 with 1 minute left. A long jumper by Terry capped the quarter scoring (incorrectly called a 3 during the game, but corrected on replay during the break). Dallas led 26-22 after 1. Both teams connected on 10 shots, with Dallas hitting 1 more 3-pointer and 3-6 FT (while the Thunder didn't attempt a free throw) for the point difference. Terry had 9 points on 4-4 FG and 1-1 3-pointer and Russell Westbrook had 11 points. James Harden opened the 2nd quarter with a 3-pointer and 2 free throws to briefly give Oklahoma City a 1 point lead, but Delonte West had a pretty drive for a layup late in the shot clock and then West stole the ball which resulted in a quick 3-pointer by Terry, and a Nowitzki steal gave Terry a short banker for a 7-0 Dallas run and Oklahoma City called timeout with Dallas up 33-27 with 9:25 to go. But Oklahoma City turned the ball over and Nowitzki hit his signature shot to make it a 9-0 run. But a dunk by Serge Ibaka ended Dallas' run and kicked off an 8-1 Thunder run (with all the buckets coming inside) and briefly put Oklahoma City up 37-36 with 6 minutes remaining. Then it was Dallas' turn to run as Vince Carter drove for 2, Jason Kidd found Carter for a dunk, and Terry made a pretty pass to Ian Mahinmi for a dunk to give Dallas a 42-37 lead with 4 minutes left. A 3-point play by Durant ended Dallas' run and the game stayed close. A 3-point play by Nowitzki gave Dallas a 6 point lead with 33 seconds left, but Ibaka (!!!) nailed a 3-pointer off an inbounds pass with 1.5 seconds to go. Dallas led 51-48 at the half. Oklahoma City had the slight edge in out-scoring Dallas 26-25 in the 2nd quarter as they shot 9-18 FG, 3-6 3-pointers, and 5-5 FT while Dallas shot 10-17 FG, 1-3 3-pointers, and 4-5 FT. Both teams were taking full advantage of the other's turnovers in the half as Dallas had 12 points on 6 Thunder turnovers and Oklahoma City had 13 points on 6 Mavs turnovers. Harden had 10 points and Ibaka had 9 points in the 2nd quarter. Oklahoma City connected on consecutive buckets to open the 3rd quarter, but Shawn Marion answered with a 3-pointer and an isolation 16-footer by Nowitzki gave Dallas a 56-52 lead with 9:35 remaining. But Dallas was unable to create any distance from the Thunder as 4 points would be the largest lead over the next 8 minutes. There was a very pretty Marion-to-West-to-Marion for a layup possession in that span, but Westbrook had it going and answered with his third mid-range jumper of the quarter. Thabo Sefolosha nailed a 3-pointer. But (after a couple of sloppy (both sides) possessions) a broken play ended with a 3 by Terry to give Dallas a 64-60 lead with 5:20 remaining. A jumper by Westbrook, jumper by Ibaka, and pretty feed from Westbrook inside to Ibaka for a dunk gave Oklahoma City a 66-64 lead with 3:35 left. But Dallas then went on a 9-0 run, including a rhythm 3-pointer by Terry, to take a 73-66 lead with 1:25 to go. A jumper by Durant ended Dallas' run. Dallas turned the ball over and the Thunder ran the clock down and Durant missed, but Harden was fouled on the rebound with just .6 seconds left (grumble) and hit 1-2 FT. Dallas led 73-69 after 3. Dallas had the slight edge in the 3rd quarter in out-scored Oklahoma City 22-21 as Dallas shot 7-18 FG, 4-8 3-pointers, and 4-4 FT while Oklahoma City shot 9-20 FG, 1-5 3-pointers, and 2-4 FT. Dallas was again strong off of turnovers as they scored 12 points on 5 Thunder turnovers (while Oklahoma City scored 5 points on 5 Mavs turnovers). Marion had 10 points (including 2 3-pointers) in the 3rd quarter and Westbrook had 8 points. Both teams struggled to open the 4th quarter and 2 free throws by Harden 90 seconds in got the scoring going. After the teams traded buckets and misses, West nailed a corner 3-pointer to give Dallas a 78-73 lead with 9 minutes remaining. The teams continued to struggle with each team having just a bucket over the next 2 minutes. Westbrook hit a jumper and later drove for a layup and foul to tie the game at 80-80 with 6:15 left. The teams traded 2 points and Kidd nailed a 3-pointer (getting open with as his defender went under the pick) with 5:20 remaining. After Harden hit 2 free throws to pull Oklahoma City within 84-85 with 4:50 to go, Nowitzki went on a 7-1 run, capped by a 3-point play (off a nice offensive rebound and feed by Brendan Haywood), to give Dallas a 92-85 lead with 3:25 left. Kidd stole the ball but missed a 3-point attempt and Oklahoma City pushed the ball and Harden lobbed to Westbrook for the quick layup. Nowitzki nailed a straight-up jumper (with a sneer) to give Dallas a 94-87 lead with 2:30 to go. But that lead was gone in a heartbeat as Durant hit 2 free throws, Nowitzki missed, Durant found Ibaka for a layup and foul (with just 8 seconds off the clock), and Harden poked the ball away from Nowitzki and Durant had the flying dunk on the break to tie the game at 94-94 with 1:30 remaining. On a broken play, Carter missed a 3-point attempt late in the clock, but Mahinmi got the rebound and was fouled. He hit both free throws with a minute left. After a timeout, Durant drove and again fed Ibaka for a dunk and he was fouled. He hit the extra to give Oklahoma City a 97-96 lead with 54 seconds to go. Nowitzki fumbled the ball away up top, but Durant missed and Dallas called their final timeout with 25 seconds left. Dallas got the ball to Nowitzki and he split the double-team and Harden hacked Nowitzki on his arm sending Nowitzki to the line with 9 seconds remaining - Nowitzki hit both free throws to put Dallas back on top. After a timeout, Oklahoma City got the ball to Durant and he rose over two defenders and his free throw jumper bounced off the front of the rim up and off the backboard and in [groan] with 1.5 seconds left (and Dallas out of timeouts). Kidd inbounded to Marion and as he got across halfcourt with two defenders on him time expired without Marion getting a shot off. Oklahoma City won 99-98. Oklahoma City leads the series 1-0. Being the playoffs, it definitely hurts more as a loss - but when a great player hits a game winner like Kevin Durant did, you just have tip you hat to him and say "Great shot" and move on to the next game. Even though Dallas didn't get the win, it was a very entertaining game that the league can be proud of (easily the best game of the playoffs so far) [though neither team played perfect and have things they will want to work on and both Durant and Dirk Nowitzki were not stellar]. How good was it? Dallas' largest lead was just 8 points and Oklahoma City's largest lead was just 4 points (but they had the lead when it mattered most) and there were 10 ties and 16 lead changes - including 5 ties and 3 leads changes in the 4th. Almost every time a team made a mistake, the other team capitalized. Oklahoma City scored 22 points on 15 Mavs turnovers and Dallas scored an amazing 27 points on 14 Thunder turnovers. Dallas is not happy with their 4th quarter defense (especially in the one minute spurt late in the game) as they allowed 30 points - Oklahoma City out-scored Dallas 30-25 in the 4th. And Oklahoma City will probably want to work on attacking Dallas' zone defense as it seemed to trouble them at times (especially early in the game). For the game, Oklahoma City shot 48.1% (38-79) FG including 6-16 3-pointers and Dallas shot 43.6% (34-78) FG including 10-22 3-pointers. Oklahoma City shot 17-20 FT and Dallas shot 20-25 FT. Dallas did have a slight rebounding edge in out-rebounding Oklahoma City 42-36 including 10-9 offensive. Oklahoma City continued their Dallas blockfest as they had 11 blocks in the game. Game 2 is Monday in Oklahoma City. It was a 4-player effort for the Thunder as Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Serge Ibaka, and James Harden scored all but 5 of Oklahoma City's 99 points (and all of their 4th quarter points). Durant had 25 points but struggled in shooting just 10-27 FG including 1-6 3-pointers - but he hit the most important shot. He also had 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 blocks in 44 minutes [the only player in the game who played 40+ minutes]. Westbrook played well throughout and had 28 points including 13-23 FG, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals - but did have 5 turnovers. Ibaka played well and had 22 points including 9-12 FG (and 1-1 3-pointers!!!), 6 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Harden provided his usual punch off the bench (in his first game back after missing a couple with a concussion) with 19 points including 9-10 FT, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 turnovers. Thabo Sefolosha was the only other Thunder player to score. He had 5 points on 2-2 FG and 1-1 3-pointers in 18 minutes. Kendrick Perkins started and missed his 3 attempts, but did have 8 rebounds in 26 minutes. Derek Fisher missed 3 shots and had a few 1s (rebound, assist, steal, foul) in 16 minutes and Daequan Cook missed 2 3-pointers and had 2 rebounds in 10 minutes. Nick Collison didn't attempt anything and had 2 rebounds and 2 assists in 15 minutes. It was a tight rotation with only 9 players playing. As usual, Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry led the way for Dallas. Nowitzki scored 11 (including 5-5 FT) of his 25 points in the 4th quarter. He had 5 rebounds and 6 turnovers (3 in the 4th) in 36 minutes. However, Dallas went completely away from Terry in the 4th. Terry was the go-to man through 3 quarters as he scores 20 points on 8-9 FG and 4-4 3-pointers, but he only attempt 1 shot (missed 3-pointer a minute into the quarter) in the 4th. It was a problem that Nowitzki and Rick Carlisle talked about after the game. Shawn Marion had 17 points and 8 rebounds and played good defense. Vince Carter forced a number of shots, as seen in his 5-14 FG, but did provide sparks at times. He had 13 points and 7 rebounds in 27 minutes. Jason Kidd played an all-around game with 8 points including 2-8 FG (though he passed up a couple of looks he should have taken), 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and a team playoff record tying 7 steals in 35 minutes. Delonte West started and had 5 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists in 27 minutes. It was a 3-tier center rotation with Brendan Haywood (19 minutes), Ian Mahinmi (22 minutes), and playoffs rookie Brandan Wright (7 minutes). Haywood had 4 points including 1-4 FG and 7 rebounds including a game high 5 offensive. Mahinmi had 6 points including 1-4 FG, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Wright missed his only attempt and had 2 rebounds and 2 fouls. Brian Cardinal got in at the end of the 3rd quarter (protecting Nowitzki from fouls and giving him a tad longer rest) for 23 seconds. [Rodrigue Beaubois did not play, coach's decision.] Quotes Scott Brooks (starting with an opening statement, not questions): "That was obviously a good win for us. I thought a lot of the things did not go well for us early, but we just stuck together. That's what this team always does and that did not surprise me. We got down a few times by 7 or 8 or 9 points and even with 3 minutes to go we got down 7 and we still just fought back. Every possession was important. At that time we had played nearly perfect basketball on both ends of the floor, and we did. It was just one game. That's what playoff basketball - you've got to take the game, win or lose, and move on to the next one and focus all your energy - and that's what we'll do. Serge [Ibaka] was a big part of this win. His ability to catch around the basket and finish was huge. He makes his free throws. Russell [Westbrook] had us in the game when we had nothing going offensively. His mid-range game was good, but I thought everybody did their job. Perk [Kendrick Perkins], his stat line does not look good other than he got good rebounds, but his defense on Dirk [Nowitzki] the last 3 or 4 possessions was about as good as anybody can guard that guy." Brooks on the last possession: "One of the things about Kevin [Durant], he's improving. He's a developing player that believes in what we do and he continues to be a tough critic on himself, with a little bit of help from me. I like the fact that he drove to the basket and got to an area that he can make that shot. It was a great shot. It was contested, but great players make tough shots. That's what he has to do. There are times that he has a tendency to take a 3 when it's not needed, but I like the fact that he drove to the basket and got to a place that he can pull up above the defender. He's an athletic, smooth shooter and he did that tonight. I thought also if the shot wasn't going in, Serge had a perfect position for the tip - and that's another growth with our team, just knowing the little things of basketball." Brooks: "You look at Dallas' team, and you can say that's a 2-7 [seed] matchup, come on, but everyone knows they're much better than the 2 [meant 7]. They've fought some injuries and came back, but now they're playing good basketball. But we knew going into this series, it's going to be tough, it's going to be a tough series every game. Game 2 is going to be tougher - and we understand that. That's how they play and that's how we play. We play very good basketball and they do too. We knew going into this game that there was going to be a lot of plays that had to be made on both ends to get the win. We had some really bad turnovers. Those 1st half turnovers, it seemed like - we only had 6 - but every turnover led to an easy bucket for them - I think they had 12 points [off turnovers] - and we just have to continue to do a better job in taking care of the basketball because they're one of the best teams at running the clock down to find a great shot and they don't turn the ball over a lot." Brooks on Durant's struggles: "You have to give them credit. You know, Marion's a good defender. They have good defenders. You know, one thing I liked, that he was going to the basket. He usually can draw some contact and they did a good job of not fouling us. And that's one of the strengths of our team - we're like top in the league in getting to the line and making them. Marion's a good player, a good defender. He's one of the best small forward defenders in the league. Also, I didn't even talk about this - Kevin's 4 blocks were huge. They were basically layups. He saved 8 points. He's active. When he's active, we're a very good defensive team. We know Serge and Perk are going to give everything around the basket, everything they have, but Kevin's blocks were a big part of this win." Brooks on Westbrook's defense on Terry in the 4th: "Well the way Terry was going in that quarter, I think he made his first 6 shots - it seemed like he had 12 or 14 points - he was feeling it. He came in and made his shot, he came in and made the next shot. He was just a good player. We know going into this series, he's the wildcard. He's the guy that can get 20 to 25 points quickly. I thought we did a better job in the 2nd half. Russell did a better job of denying. If you can deny him and take away 6 or 7 of his touches, then you did your job. And I thought Russell did his job in the 2nd half of really denying him and not allowing him to catch the ball - because once he gets it, everybody in the gym knows that he's going to go right and it's hard to stop him going to right, and he's one of the best at going to the right and finishing with his stop-on-a-dime shot." Kevin Durant on the game winner: "It looked bad when it left my hands. I've been struggling all night with my shot, missing open ones. But thank the Lord that one went in. I was just trying to be aggressive the whole 4th quarter and will us to victory." Durant on the game winner: "Coach drew up for me to come off the screen and get it close to the baseline. We knew they were going to switch with the big fella on me. But he couldn't throw the pass to me, so I had to go more out to the 3-point line and they switched Marion back on me, such a good defender. And I just didn't want to settle for a 3, so I tried to take it closer and shoot a shot. I got enough arc on it and it was able go in." Durant on defense: "I tried to help my teammates as much as possible. We have a tough cover with those guys. Just tried to contest shots at the rim. Serge is going to do it, but if I help out as well that just adds another dimension to our team. I was lucky to get my hands on a few basketballs. We just played hard. We made mistakes, but I think it's going to happen throughout the game and we just kept playing." Durant: "We got guys that are confident and know that the game's not over until the buzzer sounds. We were down 7 with like 2 1/2 minutes to go and we just kept fighting. On the defensive end, we got few steals and got some run-outs." Russell Westbrook on the game winner: "Well my job was easy - just find a way to get it to Kevin, and that's what I did." Westbrook on defending Terry: "I think it's team defense. I think we've been preaching it all season long. Tonight in the 4th quarter we turned it up a notch. That's what playoffs is all about and hopefully we can keep it going." Westbrook on his game: "Just staying aggressive. I was able to get in the lane, shoot a little pull-up when it was there. Try to find a way to get my teammates open as well. Kevin was missing little chippies and my job as a point guard is to find a way to keep us going." James Harden on Durant's game winner: "It was a great shot. It saved the game for us. I don't think we played well. We had some good spurts throughout the game but overall we didn't play our game, but he saved us at the end." Harden on his game: "You get into a groove. I just went out there and tried not to do too much and whenever I hit my first shot I took advantage of it and just tried to play my game." Harden: "Kevin made a great shot but we still have to play better as a team. It is the playoffs, guys are going to adjust. We missed a lot of easy shots. We have to get ready for Game 2." Rick Carlisle on the end of the game: "Well, Nowitzki made a great play to get fouled - it was clearly a foul, so he made the 2 free throws. Then at the end, we wanted Marion guarding him [Durant]. Durant made a great shot. The only other thing we could have done was double-team him and gotten the ball out of his hands - and we should have done that, obviously, so that's on me. I take responsibility for that. I think the important thing we need to realize is that our guys competed at an extremely high level and really worked hard to get a 7-point lead with 2:20 to go. And then we made mistakes you can't make down the stretch. The last shot always gets magnified. But we made some uncharacteristic mistakes that we're not going to make anymore in the series. We can't. And that's really where it's at." Carlisle on Terry in the 4th: "They were playing him hard. Now listen, I mean, that's my job to get him more looks when he's going good. That's my esponsibility, so I'll take the responsibility for that. But, you know, that said, we had a 7-point lead with 2:20 to go and in that situation, you got close the game out, you got to find a way to close the game out. And we didn't do that. 2 and-1 fouls. A couple of turnovers that can't happen in that situation. I give Oklahoma City a lot of credit. They hung in, they scrambled, they came up with balls. But there are some mistakes the we just got to avoid." Carlisle on Oklahoma City's defense on Nowitzki: "I just thought they were kind of keeping a fresh guy on him. Dirk got off to a slow start. You know, he missed a couple of shots he normally makes. They did a good job of crowding him in the lane a couple of times." Dirk Nowitzki: "I thought we made a lot of great plays. Played a good game all way around. We out-rebounded them and got to the free throw line more times than them, and that's usually a winning formula for us. If we get to the line and rebound, we usually put ourselves in a great position to win. And we were right there. Made some mistakes. I turned the ball over twice in the last 3 minutes when we were up 7 and little stuff like that puts them in transition. Just didn't make enough plays down the stretch. Ibaka had an and-1 that we can't give up. You know, Durant made a tough pull-up there - I think we played him as well as you can." Nowitzki: "One time I drove middle on Perk and I think Harden came over and got his hand on the ball. And I think the other time I came down of a down-screen - I read the play wrong, I thought Perk might have trailed me, so I tried to go middle but he shot the gap and he was right there when I came and he just poked the ball out. So got to keep attacking. You know, we got to find a way to get JET [Terry] the ball. I think he had the hot hand and we couldn't even get him the ball in the 4th quarter - they denied him everywhere, and we got to counter that." Nowitzki: "It was a tough game. I thought we had our chances. And we got to create our own breaks. I feel all season, for some reason down the stretch the other teams are making one more play, one more bounce - you got to up and grab it. We were right there. The game was there for the taking. We needed one more play that we didn't come up with." Nowitzki on Durant's game winner: "That was basically a buzzer beater if you don't have a timeout. If you have a timeout, you can call it and move the ball and get maybe a look at it. But if you don't have a timeout, that's definitely a buzzer-beater. It's tough. ... For some reason, last year, all away around we came up with those bounces and we were the ones on top. And this year, too many times in close games, I think we have a losing record this year in close games. It's tough. This is definitely as tough a loss as you can get. But if a team can recover from it, it's an experienced one and we have a lot of older guys who have been through a lot. So, you know, a big game for us on Monday and hopefully play the same kind of all-around game, you know, scramble for each other defensively, try to force Durant into some tough shots, same with Russell, and go from there." Shawn Marion on defending Durant at the end: "It was great defense. I don't even think he could see the rim. There was no way he could see the rim. He just threw that [ball] up and it rolled in. Like I said, we should have never even been that position, but you got to give him credit because he hit a hell of a shot." Marion on Durant's game winner: "I was all over him. He couldn't even get a look at the rim. He just threw it up there and got a nice little bounce and it went in." Marion on not holding on to the lead: "I'm very frustrated with it. It was in our control. We just simply gave them the damn game. We made them work for that last shot, but at the same time, we never should have been in that situation to be sitting here talking about it." Vince Carter on the loss: "It's unfortunate for us that we played great basketball and gave ourselves a chance to win. We had a nice lead and we just have to close out games. When you're playing on somebody else's homecourt, holding a lead like that, we just have to close out games plain and simple." Carter on the loss: "It's frustrating because I play to win. I'm not playing to lose, and every time we do lose, I expect us to win. This game was not any different than any other game.
