Dallas released Omar Cook. Cook was signed November 20 and immediately placed on IR. He never got off IR. Dallas at San Antonio (December 26) The Mavs started the game with 3 turnovers and San Antonio scored the first 5 points of the game, but the game stayed very close the entire quarter. San Antonio led 11-6 with 8:25 remaining and Dallas went on a 12-2 run to take an 18-13 lead with 5 minutes to go as the Mavs were red hot. Dallas held a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter and led 27-23 after 1. Dallas shot 13-16 FG with no free throws and San Antonio shot just 7-21 FG, but were staying in the game in shooting 7-7 FT. Dallas was also very high with 7 turnovers (averaging about 11.5 per game) in the quarter. Michael Finley had 8 points on 4-5 FG and Tim Duncan had 10 points. The game remained close in the 2nd quarter with San Antonio living off the free throw line as the refs were whistle happy one-sided (not that the Mavs weren't fouling, just that the refs weren't calling it both ways). Dallas took their largest lead at 49-41 on an Evan Eschmeyer dunk with 4:40 left, but Steve Smith scored the next 7 points to keep the game close. Terry Porter converted a 3-point play to briefly give San Antonio a 1 point lead, but a layup by Dirk Nowitzki gave Dallas a 59-58 lead at the half. Dallas shot 7-9 FT and San Antonio shot 17-18 FT in the quarter. Nowitzki had 11 points in the quarter. A 3-pointer by Bruce Bowen tied the game at 61-61 with 10:20 left. Danny Manning scored 5 points and Finley got a bucket in the middle as Dallas went back up 68-61 with 8:45 remaining. The teams traded baskets and San Antonio went on an 11-2 run to go up 74-72 with 5:15 left. The excitement continued as there were 5 leads changes and 3 ties the rest of the quarter. Dallas scored the last 6 points of the quarter to take an 86-82 lead after 3. Nowitzki hit a 3-pointer to put Dallas up 89-86 with 10:10 remaining, but San Antonio scored the next 4 points to briefly go up 90-89 with 8:23 left. Nowitzki answered with a layup and 3-point play to give Dallas a 94-90 lead with 7 minutes left. Dallas was clinging to a small single-digit lead for the rest of the quarter as this great game stayed tight. It was the Tim Duncan show as Duncan scored 14 straight points for San Antonio, including 3 3-point plays. With the Mavs up 108-105 with 2:35 left and seeing that Dallas could not stop Duncan, Don Nelson instituted hack-a-Bowen as the Mavs intentionally fouled Bruce Bowen away from the ball to send Bowen, a 40% free throw shooter this season, to the line prior to the 2 minute mark [can't foul away from the ball with less than 2 minutes left]. Bowen went to the line twice and hit only 1-2 both times while Dallas was able to make buckets on their possessions. Dallas led 112-107 on a Steve Nash jumper with 1:45 left. Duncan hit a jumper on the Spurs next possession. Nash missed, but Juwan Howard rebounded and was fouled. He hit both free throws. Duncan passed to Bowen for the layup with a minute left to pulled the Spurs within 111-114. Tim Hardaway missed a 3-pointer, but Howard again snagged the rebound and was fouled. He hit both free throws. Duncan was fouled posting up with 30 seconds left and hit both free throws. Nash drove with 15 seconds left (and 10 still remaining on the shot clock) and Porter tipped the ball away and another Spur picked it up. Behind the arc, Porter passed to Antonio Daniels and Daniels passed back to Porter, who Danny Manning had slacked off of, and Porter nailed the 3-pointer to tie the game at 116-116 with 5.9 seconds left. Nash missed the 16-footer at the buzzer and we had overtime. Game tied 116-116. Duncan had 21 points in the quarter and was up to 46 for the game. Dallas shot 9-19 FG and San Antonio shot 12-17 FG in the 4th. The Mavs controlled the overtime jumpball and Nash nailed a jumper with the shot clock winding down. Duncan missed and Hardaway hit a jumper to give Dallas a 120-116 lead with 3:45 remaining. But Duncan scored the next 7 points to give San Antonio a 123-120 lead with 1:15 left as Dallas committed 3 straight turnovers, including an annoying 24 second violation where Nash dribbled the ball for 23 seconds trying to create a shot and passed it off at the last second. Porter had a nice steal as Dallas again turned the ball over, but Duncan missed with 37 seconds to go. Tim Hardaway brought the ball up court, pulled up, and swished the 3-pointer from 5 feet behind the line [raise you hand if you _knew_ Hardaway was going to pull up and attempt a quick shot...lowering hand to resume typing]. The game was tied 123-123 with 30 seconds left. Duncan and Nowitzki were fighting for position on the block with Malik Rose holding the ball waiting to pass to Duncan. Duncan turned in as Rose passed to where Duncan was and Dirk Nowitzki easily snagged the errant pass and was fouled (not in the penalty). The Mavs called timeout and set up a play with 26 seconds left. Steve Nash let the clock run down low. It was a two-man game with Nash and Finley. The defense was tight on Finley and Nash's man stepped back to prevent the pass to Finley, so Nash rose up and drained the 3-pointer with .6 seconds left. San Antonio called timeout and advanced the ball to the front court. The ball was inbounded to Porter, who turned and flung the ball at the rim - not even close as it flew over the rim. Dallas won 126-123 in overtime. What a great game! I feel sorry for anyone who didn't see this game. This game showed the beauty of NBA basketball - good flow, fast pace, dominate play, good shooting, clutch shots, exciting finish - just a great game to watch. Dallas' largest lead was only 8 points and San Antonio's was just 5 points. Neither team ever had control of this game. It was Dallas' big 3 vs San Antonio's big 1. Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Finley, and Steve Nash combined for 81 points while Tim Duncan had 53 points - a Mavs opponent record (was 50). Dallas shot a hot 56% (47-84) FG while San Antonio shot 45.9% (39-85) FG. San Antonio went to the line a high 41 times and connected on a really high 38 times while Dallas shot 25-29 FT. And, shocker, the Mavs actually out-rebounded San Antonio 41-37. The Mavs were led by Michael Finley's 28 points including 11-16 FG, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists, but with season high 6 turnovers. Finley played 51 minutes. Dirk Nowitzki had 27 points and 11 rebounds and played the last 4 minutes of the 4th and all of overtime with 5 fouls. Nowitzki also played 51 minutes. Steve Nash had 27 points, including 5 of Dallas' 10 points in overtime, and 5 assists. He made some mistakes at the end of regulation and in overtime, but hit the game winner. Tim Hardaway had Dallas' other 5 points of overtime (only Nowitzki attempted (and missed) a shot besides Nash and Hardaway - Dallas was 4-5 FG in OT). Hardaway had 15 points, but turned the ball over 6 times, but his 3-pointer to tie the game in overtime was clutch. Eduardo Najera started and played well with 7 points including 3-4 FG and 5 rebounds in 27 minutes. He had a great play where he ran down a loose ball in the corner, drove baseline with Duncan under the basket, head- and ball-faked the pass as he neared Duncan, and rose and slammed the ball home over Duncan. Danny Manning played solid and took the open looks San Antonio was giving him. He had 11 points including 5-6 FG and 5 rebounds in 18 minutes. Wang Zhizhi was not productive in his 14 minutes and Evan Eschmeyer only played 2 minutes. Shawn Bradley nearly got in at the end of the 3rd quarter with only a few seconds left as the game was delayed due to a bat flying around the court, but the ref would not allow him to sub in and he stayed on the bench for the entire game. What can you say about Tim Duncan? He was awesome. He took over the game for San Antonio in the 4th and overtime as 21 of his 53 points came in the 4th and he had all of the Spurs' 7 overtime points. He shot 19-28 FG and 15-15 FT, had 11 rebounds, and had 3 blocks, but also committed 6 turnovers in playing 50 minutes. David Robinson only played 25 minutes due to the flu and Dallas' quicker lineup. Robinson had 13 points and 7 rebounds. Steve Smith had 11 points including 3-9 FG and Bruce Bowen had 12 points including 4-11 FG. Rookie point guard Tony Parker was schooled in this game by Nash and fouled out in just 23 minutes. He had 5 points on 2-9 FG and just 2 assists. Malik Rose had 12 points on 2-7 FG and 8-8 FT and 9 rebounds off the bench. Terry Porter was a larger factor than his numbers would indicate. He had 8 points including the 3-pointer that sent the game into overtime and 3 assists. A great game. Sorry if you didn't get to see it. With the win, Dallas remained perfect (15-0) in games that they have scored at least 100 points. Quotes Don Nelson: "That 3 by Tim Hardaway was huge. We've seen him do that against us many times in the past. That is what he brings to this team. That is the type of thing that he is capable of doing for you." Nelson: "We had no answer for Duncan down low tonight. Anyway, we withstood it, and we were very good offensively, and that carried us tonight. Other than that I thought we played pretty well defensively. We were able to withstand many times when it looked like we were gong to lose the momentum and drop this one. When your big 3 are all scoring in the 20's that can offset a guy scoring 50-something. But I'm not saying next time he can have 75." Nelson on Duncan: "We had no answer for Timmy today, that was probably a career high for him. We withstood it and we were good defensively. Everyone but Timmy, we were able to stop." Nelson on intentionally fouling Bowen twice in the 4th: "We couldn't stop [Duncan]. We knew Bowen wasn't hitting his free throws [42%] so the right tactic was to foul him. We got 1 instead of 2 [points] each time." Michael Finley: "It was a great game. Even the vampires came to witness it from their courtside seats." [Referring to the bat that was flying around and twice stopped play.] Steve Nash: "This means a lot. We had a lot to prove to ourselves after the playoffs and after beating them only once in the regular season last year. It was a big win for us." Nash: "I was a little disappointed because I thought I had missed some opportunities earlier when I had been able to penetrate. I really wanted to hit a big shot in the overtime and fortunately I got that opportunity. We ran a pick-and-roll with Mike and when I came off the pick I tried to get the defense off me and create some space and was just able to get a good look." Nash on the mistakes he had made in the game: "I was angry with myself because I felt like I had done all the hard work. But I think we deserved it in the end." Nash on Hardaway's 3: "That was a huge shot. He's done that a few times for us now. He's a veteran with a lot of confidence and that shot is what gave us a chance to win this ball game." Tim Hardaway on his 3: "I came down in a rhythm, felt the shot, and the minute it left my hand I knew it was all net. I like to have the ball in my hands in game time situations and at that point I was feeling the rhythm." Hardaway on Duncan: "He's tough. He can shoot, dribble, and is dangerous when he gets on like that. When that happens you just have to bare down and keep the other guys on their team at their averages or below and that is what we were able to do tonight." Hardaway on Duncan: "A guy like that can make shots. He's 7-1, can dribble up the floor. Anything close, he can bank it. He's mobile. He's got the whole package." Gregg Popovich: "It was a great game. I thought both teams did a hell of a job." Popovich: "I was real pleased at what [the Spurs] did and how they executed at both ends of the court." Popovich on allowing 100+ points in consecutive games: "Teams have been hot. If I thought our defense was bad or our guys weren't guarding, I'd be the first guy that would be on them." Popovich no Robinson sitting most of the 2nd half: "He's a little under the weather, but it was mostly due to match-ups." Popovich on Duncan: "I thought he played great. It's great to see him taking charge. He's telling me what to run some of the times." Tim Duncan: "They're really hard to defend. Not only because of the 3 guys but because they get up and down and are semi-reckless. They can really shoot it from anywhere they want and its tough to play against that. Last year in the playoffs, I think we did a good job in controlling that because we rebounded the ball and got a couple of stops. That was the difference tonight. We didn't get as many stops as we needed to." Duncan: "They just kept feeding me the ball. I just took the open shots and they were falling." Duncan: "If I had missed all my shots and we had won. I would be happier than I am now." Duncan on the mis-pass on San Antonio's last real possession: "I faked him [Rose] out, I faked everybody else out. [Nowitzki] was kind of on my high side, so I thought I could just spin and go to the basket because there was nobody behind me. It's no fault of [Rose's] at all." Duncan: "That last play we're defending the hell out of it and Steve Nash just sort of throws up a prayer at the end. That's just how it goes. If we're ever in this situation again, hopefully things will come out better." Steve Smith on Dallas' big 3: "They played well. Those 3 always play well. Even with them playing well, we defended pretty well. I think at the end we made a couple of mistakes and they hit some big shots." Smith on Dallas' big 3: "Those 3 always play well. You just never want all 3 to play well at the same time." Smith: "I thought when Tim [Duncan] hit that shot we definitely had the lead, but they take big 3s and they hit big 3s. If Tim wouldn't have connected the game would have been the ball game, but he hit it. In the last possession we didn't get a good shot, we didn't get a shot at all. And then Nash came down and put the game away." Smith on San Antonio's last 2 losses: "I think against Milwaukee we didn't play as well defensively. I thought tonight everybody had a hand up. Mike hit 4 or 5 shot with guys right on him. Nash hit a couple with guys on him. Tonight we played a little bit better defensively, but they were just hitting their shots. I think our defense got better from the Milwaukee game." Malik Rose on Duncan: "He played great tonight. He's been carrying us all season. We just need to find a way to give him some help. When the man is hot you have to go to him. They don't have anyone who can stop him." Rose: "We wasted a spectacular game from Tim." Well, that is the way the game should have gone, but didn't. The Mavs did score the first 6 points and led the entire 1st quarter. Michael Finley pulled a hammy early in the game and did not return (mostly as a precautionary measure). Dallas led 15-12 with 5:15 left and scored the next 13 points to go up 28-12 with 2:15 remaining. Marcus Fizer hit a jumper at the buzzer and Dallas led 32-20 after 1. Dirk Nowitzki had 21 points. Evan Eschmeyer, who had been playing really well, sprained his ankle early into the 2nd quarter. Dallas led 37-23 with 9:50 to go and did not take this quarter seriously. Steve Nash and Nowitzki sat for most of the quarter - one of the big 3 should always be on the court unless it is a blowout. Chicago took advantage of Dallas' disinterest and scored the next 7 points to pull within 30-37 with 5:15 remaining. Dallas held a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter and led 43-34 at the half. Dallas only scored 11 points in the 2nd quarter, but Chicago was also non-offensive with 14 points. Dallas paid for their poor performance in the 2nd quarter with a closer game than they would have liked. Chicago pulled within 5 points at 40-45 with 8:40 to go and Dallas scored the next 10 points, capped by a 3-pointer by Adrian Griffin, to go up 55-42 with 5 minutes left. Dallas held a high single-digit to a low double-digit lead the rest of the quarter and led 63-56 after 3. Dallas opened the 4th quarter with a 10-2 run to take a more comfortable lead at 73-58 with 8 minutes to go. Chicago would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way. Dallas won 89-74. Well, the Mavs showed what a really good game looked like on Wednesday night, so they decided to show what a really ugly game looked like on Thursday night. Dallas only shot 43.9% FG and an ugly 12-21 FT. Fortunately they were playing the worst team in the league as the Bulls were unable to take advantage of all the opportunities Dallas was giving them. Chicago shot just 38.4% FG and 17-24 FT in scoring a mere 74 points (Dallas is not known for their defense) and kept giving Dallas gifts in turning the ball over 24 times which Dallas converted into 27 points. The only productive player the entire game was Eduardo Najera with career highs 15 points on 7-7 FG and 1-5 FT and 14 rebounds. He also had 3 steals. Dirk Nowitzki was the high man with 24 points, but fans were wondering where he was after the 1st quarter as he only had 3 points in the last 3 quarters. Juwan Howard was the only other Mav in double-digits with 11 points, but only 2 rebounds. Steve Nash struggled offensively with just 9 points including 4-13 FG, but did dish out 14 assists. Shawn Bradley played for the first time since December 11. His performance really wasn't worth noting beside the fact that he got off the bench - he did some positive things, but also did some negative things. He had 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 fouls in 16 minutes. Injuries were a big concern for Dallas in this game. Michael Finley only played 3 minutes before leaving the court. He is expected to play in Saturday's Atlanta game. Evan Eschmeyer was playing really well - so well that I was counting his rebounds in the 1st quarter. He only had 2 points on 1-4 FG in 15 minutes, but had 8 rebounds and 3 steals as he was aggressive in going after the ball. And when he suffered the injury, he did _not_ want to leave the court, much less go to the locker room. Unfortunately, he will miss the Atlanta game and may be out longer. Chicago really is a poor looking team. Though I was not happy with Dallas' performance during the game, any other team besides Chicago and I would have been worried about if Dallas would be able to pull this one out. The Bulls were led by Ron Mercer with 19 points. Marcus Fizer had 11 points and 7 rebounds and Ron Artest had 13 points and 7 rebounds. An ugly game, but it goes down as a W and that is all that counts. Don Nelson now has 999 career coaching wins. He will soon join Lenny Wilkens and Pat Riley as the only NBA coaches with 1,000 wins. Dallas has won 8 straight games - tying the 2nd longest winning streak in team history. Quotes Don Nelson: "It was a hard game for us. I never expected it to be easy. I loved the way we started. I wished we could have continued that way, but when you lose one of your best players it takes some adjusting. Griffin's heart was willing, hasn't played or practiced very much and is very rusty. Najera to the rescue once again. What a game, career high in rebounds and points. He is just growing with every game, getting better and better. Tonight we actually used him as a defensive stopper and he did a really nice job in the 4th quarter. We needed some help in that area. He just continues to grow and get better and better and we are really happy about that." Nelson: "I went into the game telling the team before I wasn't going to play anybody more than 30 minutes. I wanted my bench to supply the spark tonight and win the game. I don't know if they did that, but the 1st quarter was sensational. We came out the right way and then we struggled some after that. I was happy about most everything in the game, but it was a struggle at times after we lost Mike. I got a chance to play Bradley a little bit. I thought he has been eager to get back in. I thought it was a good game for him. I thought he was effective." Nelson on Finley: "He tweaked his hamstring a little bit against San Antonio. He felt a little twinge tonight so we got him out of there. It is very minor. We are going to be very careful with him." Nelson: "Eschmeyer, by far, had his best game. I asked Eschmeyer where he had been the last 24 games and he said 'Right at the end of the bench, coach.' Injuries like that happen and I hope it is not too bad, but I think it probably is. It seems to be an ankle sprain. Bradley had a chance to play because of that. We have 8 [wins] in a row and I feel real good about that." Dirk Nowitzki: "I had a lot of good looks, made a couple open shots, layups and dunks. We were playing great defense and running the ball real well." Tim Hardaway: "It was ugly out there tonight. We wanted to come in and beat them convincingly and get everyone in the game and have some fun. It didn't happen that way, but we got the win and that's all that counts." Hardaway: "Tonight was an ugly game, plain and simple. We got the W and that's all that matters." Hardaway: "We were drained. It really showed out there that we were tired and that's the way it is sometimes. Hopefully next Wednesday when we go up there and play them we'll be more enthused and ready." Eduardo Najera: "I just ran right next to my guy all night. I didn't want him to catch the ball, because when they don't catch it, they can't score. And my teammates played great help defense on the rotations. It was exhausting, but we got the win." Najera: "I played solid. There was nothing fancy. I just did my job. [Nelson] told us he was going to rely on the bench tonight and we took it as a challenge." Najera: "Obviously, I thought I played solid, nothing fancy, just doing what the coaches wanted me to do. I did my job pretty well. I got some wide open looks. I took them and they just went in. The main thing is that we won the game. We knew that we had to come out and put in a lot of energy, especially since our very tough game last night." Bill Berry: "Defensively we were better than we were last night. That was a very encouraging thing to see. We had better weak side help. Overall the defense was better. The transition defense, the fast break defense was a little spotty at times but better than last night as well. I thought we did a good job of containing Nash. Nowitzki went crazy in the 1st quarter. He had a great quarter; he's a hell of a player. But after that, Ron Artest did a pretty good job on him and the rest of the guys - Trent Hassell played a pretty good solid game for the minutes he played. Dalibor Bagaric played a good solid game. Everybody played better tonight. Everyone was more comfortable and I was very encouraged. I think we took a step forward defensively and that is important." Berry: "We've made some adjustments yesterday during walk-through and they were better today and tomorrow with a practice and down the road we should just get better. We're a young team, obviously, and there's room for improvement and I think the players know that and they are going to work hard to get there." Ron Artest: "We made too many mistakes. I know that I took about 7 bad shots. We probably could have had this game. Nowitzki wasn't scoring anymore toward the end, but we were still turning the ball over. We just made too many mistakes. But we're going to correct them in practice tomorrow and go out again to try to get a win." Artest: "Things will come together, because it feels more like basketball. Even with [24] turnovers, everybody just feels more comfortable." Tyson Chandler: "I think I did well. We're young so we've have a lot of work to do. It takes a lot of practice so that we are ready on gameday."
