The Dallas @ Washington game for next Sunday (March 31) has been re-picked up by NBC. The game, the middle of a triple-header, will start at 2 pm. NBC had the Milwaukee @ Boston game re-scheduled to an earlier start time and that will be the first game of the day. San Antonio @ LA Lakers is the 3rd game. Of course, Michael Jordan's return to action is probably why NBC decided to re-pick the game up (as his injury was highly likely why they dropped it). Wang Zhizhi suffered a sprained left ankle during the 4th quarter of the Memphis game. He left the game after the injury occurred. The MRI was negative and he is listed as day-to-day. Vying with Dirk Nowitzki (sprained ankle putting on a shoe) for most bizarre injury of the season is Nick Van Exel who suffered a pulled muscle near his ribs putting on a shirt. The injury occurred prior to the San Antonio game. Unlike Nowitzki, Van Exel has not missed any game time due to the injury (though it may have contributed to his poor performance vs San Antonio). Don Nelson has opted not to play Johnny Newman in the last 2 games to rest his sore Achilles. He could play if needed, but is getting the rest as a precautionary measure. To no one's surprise, Tariq Abdul-Wahad will remain on IR for the rest of the season. Apparently his left knee is pretty bad and will need some time to fully heal. Don Nelson: "He won't be ready to play this year because that knee needs a lot of time off. It's a very bad knee and it's going to need about 6 months before it completely heals. He needs a long time off, so next year will be his year." San Antonio at Dallas (March 21) Dallas came out sluggish and San Antonio took an early 10-2 lead with 7:30 remaining. San Antonio led 20-12 with 3:10 to go and Dallas went on an 11-2 run to go up 23-22 with 34 seconds left. A Terry Porter jumper capped the quarter and San Antonio led 24-23 after 1. The Spurs out-rebounded Dallas 16-8. San Antonio led 35-34 with 7:25 left and went on a 12-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Tony Parker, to take a 47-36 lead with 4 minutes remaining. San Antonio led 53-42 at the half. San Antonio continued doubling-up Dallas on the rebounds as they out-rebounded Dallas 14-7 in the quarter. Tim Duncan had 16 points including 7-10 FG and 10 rebounds in the half. Dallas only had 1 offensive rebound in the half while San Antonio had 8. San Antonio led 46-58 with 9:35 to go and Dallas went on a 10-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Dirk Nowitzki, to pull within 56-60 with 7:35 left. Dallas scored 7 straight points to tie the game at 71-71 with 3:30 left and the game stayed close the rest of the way. Porter hit a 3-pointer with 27 seconds remaining to give San Antonio a 80-77 lead after 3. Dallas shot 14-23 FG in the quarter while San Antonio shot 10-19 FG. Dirk Nowitzki had 12 points. San Antonio opened the 4th with a 8-3 mini-run to take an 88-80 lead with 7:30 left. But Dallas answered with an 11-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Michael Finley from Arlington, to take a 91-90 lead with 4:50 to go. On a bad call, Raef LaFrentz was called for his 6th foul with 3:50 left and Dallas was in the penalty. David Robinson hit 1 of 2 free throws. Eduardo Najera was fouled on Dallas' possession and he hit 1 of 2 free throws. The teams traded misses and Robinson went to the line for another set of 1 of 2 free throws to tie the game at 92-92 with 3 minutes remaining. Steve Nash hit a jumper and Robinson went to the line for 2 free throws. Nowitzki missed a 3-pointer and Duncan hit 1 of 2 free throws as the whistle blew for San Antonio's 3rd straight possession (and 4 out of 5 possessions). Nash missed, but Najera got the rebound, but his put back was no good. Antonio Daniels drove and dished out as the defense collapsed to the open Bruce Bowen in the corner who drained the killer 3-pointer and gave San Antonio a 98-94 lead with 1:08 left. Nowitzki drove for a layup with 45 seconds remaining and Parker answered with a jumper with 26 seconds left. Nowitzki was fouled driving and hit both free throws with 21 seconds to go and San Antonio led 100-98. Dallas immediately fouled and Daniels missed both free throws and Greg Buckner was fouled on the rebound (in the penalty). Buckner hit the first, but missed the 2nd, but got the rebound and dished out to Finley who immediately rose up, but missed the jumper with 15 seconds left. Danny Ferry went to the line and hit both free throws to give San Antonio a 102-99 lead with 14.5 seconds remaining. Dallas called timeout and advanced the ball to half court. The ball was inbounded to Nash with Robinson defending him and Nash passed to Nick Van Exel who bricked the 3-pointer with 5.6 seconds to go. Malik Rose hit 1 of 2 free throws with 4 seconds left and Dallas used their last timeout. Finley hit a 3-pointer with 1.4 seconds left and Duncan was fouled with 1.3 seconds on the clock. He hit the 1st and tried to intentionally miss the 2nd, but line-drived it in. Dallas made the long inbounds pass to Nash who's swinging hook-3-point attempt was no where close to even reaching the rim. San Antonio won 105-102. As good as these Dallas-San Antonio games have been, I really hated the way this game went - and not just because Dallas lost. There was no home cooking in the AAC for this game. The officiating seemed pretty lopsided in this game with poor calls going against Dallas, especially in the 1st and 4th quarters. Dallas did have a shot to win the game, so the refs didn't decide the outcome, but they did influence the way the game was played. I wished this could have been a cleaner called game as the previous 2 matchups have been highly competitive and entertaining games - the refs left a black mar on this game in my eye. Excluding the 5-8 FT off of Dallas intentional fouls at the end, San Antonio shot 23-29 FT while Dallas shot 13-16 FT. Dallas actually made 3 more field goals and 6 more 3-pointers than San Antonio, but San Antonio hit 15 more free throws. That said, I still groan at the memory of Bruce Bowen's 3-pointer. And what the heck was Don Nelson doing running a play with Steve Nash and Nick Van Exel on the strong side as Van Exel was having such a poor game - Dirk Nowitzki or Michael Finley should have been on the strong side and the Mavs should have had one of the Big 3 to take the shot. And I wish that Finley would have held up and not taken the quick shot after Buckner got the rebound. Oh well. It makes the last 3 weeks of the season that much more interesting as Dallas and San Antonio have the same record and both want the Midwest Division title. San Antonio holds the edge in the tie-breaker - up 2-1 in the series and the last game is 4/6 in SA and the Spurs currently have a better conference record than Dallas (2nd tie-breaker) - so Dallas really needs to finish with a better record than the Spurs if they are to win the division. No surprise that Tim Duncan was the high man in the game with 32 points including 8-10 FT and 14 rebounds. David Robinson helped with 22 points including 12-15 FT and 12 rebounds. And Tony Parker was the only other Spur in double-digits with 12 points as he had his first decent game against Dallas. It helped that he did not have to play Steve Nash straight up as Don Nelson (stupidly) went with a starting lineup of Nash and Nick Van Exel at guard - Nash had completely killed Parker in the first 2 games. I was annoyed when the starting lineup was announced at Van Exel's start as the team had been playing well with a more traditional lineup and Parker had shown no ability to defend Nash. Nash did have a great game with 28 points including 12-19 FG and 7 assists. Van Exel had a terrible game with just 2 points on 1-12 FG and 0-5 3-pointers. Dirk Nowitzki was the high man with 29 points and 14 rebounds and Michael Finley chipped in 21 points including 4-5 3-pointers. Raef LaFrentz was plagued by foul trouble and had 12 points and 9 rebounds before fouling out. Dallas only got 10 points off the bench. Steve Smith did not play and I don't know why. He has a sprained ankle, but was out before the game playing a pretty intense game of 2-on-2 for about 30 minutes. Smith and Mark Bryant were weren't doing too well against Amal McCaskill and another youngster. Quotes Gregg Popovich: "Well, every game we play against Dallas seems to be a good one. 2 very competitive teams; both very aggressive and there is a lot of character on both teams. Both are playing to win every time. It is just a great contest every time and it probably always will be. So we're thrilled with the victory that both teams did a great job." Popovich on the Spurs improvement since December: "I couldn't be more thrilled with them. We added 3 new starters with these guys on the perimeter. I frankly thought it would take longer for them to feel comfortable with each other - not only learning the system, but playing with each other. So I've got to be really thrilled that they have progressed to where they are. I think they are going to get better. We have a lot of room for improvement. Given the newness of the players, I couldn't be more happy for them." Popovich on Parker: "Tony is the most mature 19 year-old I have ever seen. When Tim Duncan came at 21, I thought he was the most mature 21 year-old I ever saw and Tony is 19 and is the same way. He just plays the game; he learns every day. When he plays against Steve and other point guards in the league he just gets smarter because he has so much to learn. I am really pleased with his progress." Popovich on the Western Conference: "I still think, from spots 1 through 5, anybody can end up anywhere. It is just a matter of who can stay consistent and persistent. This is still a marathon, even though there are just 13 games left. It's a great year for the fans." David Robinson: "Really, the turning point was when Bruce hit the 3. That was kind of the one big thing. It could have gone either way up to that point." Robinson: "This was nerve-wracking. It was a game that makes your ulcer act up." Robinson on this win and Wednesday's win vs the Lakers: "This is real satisfying. These 2 games with the Lakers and Dallas, 2 teams that were ahead of us, really gave us a chance to shoot for our short term goal, which is get ahead of the [Midwest] division, so we feel pretty good about these. We are starting to play really solid basketball; playing 48 minutes. These guys never gave up tonight, they kept fighting and fighting, and we hung in there pretty well, so I really feel good about this one." Robinson: "We've been through our bumps and bruises and now we're starting to play like contenders." Robinson on Dallas: "They just have such great shooters. They move the ball around and they spread the floor really well, so it really challenges us. It seems like they getup for us. They played great in all 3 of the games. They have played great down the stretch and hit some shots. We pound the ball inside and they just keep spreading the floor and hitting shots." Tim Duncan on the win: "It's huge for us; here on the road in a tough place like Dallas. To come out here and play well on a back-to-back, just a great improvement for us and a great confidence builder." Duncan: "We had some guys hit great shots all night. I thought David did a great job of hitting his free throws tonight. Bruce hit that big shot, Tony hit a big shot; guys were just stepping up and making plays. That is what we have to have down the stretch." Tony Parker: "I'm just happy I got an opportunity to knock down a big shot. This was just a really big game for me." Bruce Bowen on his key 3-pointer: "I was just glad to be in the thick of things. You dream about stuff like that." Don Nelson: "It turned out to be a good basketball game even though we didn't win. I didn't think we played very well in the 1st half. We came around in the 2nd half and made a game of it but no one was really in charge and if anyone was, they were. We had the lead a couple of times in the 4th quarter. We never really had a great handle on the game, not sharp enough to beat a really good team. It was a tough loss for us because it has ramifications that I don't want to envision. You don't always win the games that you hope to. I was surprised in the differential in free throws in a big game like this. We really went to the basket hard and deserved more respect, but we didn't get any. I guess you don't get any until you win some playoff games or establish yourself with your younger players getting a few more years under their belts. It was a hard fought game, one that we didn't win." Nelson on starting Van Exel: "I wanted to create the match up that I created. Nick didn't have a very good game so it didn't look successful. We know that he is capable of playing well, he just didn't have a very good game. It did a lot of things I was looking for. The biggest play of the game was LaFrentz fouling out. It put us behind the eight ball. If you look at that play, it was clearly a moving screen but the call went against us that probably cost us the game." Michael Finley on his missed jumper: "After I missed it, I thought I should have taken it out to get a better shot. But I thought I had a good look at the basket." Dirk Nowitzki: "That's why you play sports - you want to be in a game like this." Nowitzki: "We played a good game in the 2nd half. Down the stretch they came up with a couple of more big plays especially that one 3-pointer from Bowen out of the corner, which was pretty much the killer for us. Mike having a 15-footer with 16 seconds left, we'll take that shot any day. Unfortunately it didn't go down, but we had our chances to win the game. It was a tough loss and now were tied with them." Nowitzki: "They are a good team and they showed it tonight. Duncan on the low block is pretty well unguardable and that's why we doubled him and we did a fairly good job of getting the ball out of his hands, but he still scored 32 points and thats why he is an awesome player. In the 1st half we just didn't compete enough. They were beating us on the glass and played with more heart." Steve Nash: "We really let them get a big lead on us in the 1st half and it could have been negated with just a little bit of toughness." Raef LaFrentz: "The 2nd quarter really hurt us. We kept fighting to get back in the game in the 2nd half and we made a ballgame out of it." LaFrentz: "Their offense is very effective, but we just have to play a little bit better next time." LaFrentz: "Our 1st half wasn't as nearly as good as our 2nd half, but we didn't give up and kept scrapping till the very end." Nick Van Exel on his poor game: "It was just one of those nights that when they come, you just wish they'd go away as fast as possible." Van Exel on his last 3-point attempt: "There was a lot of hesitation in my mind knowing I had missed those shots earlier." Greg Buckner on Finley's missed jumper: "Anytime you get Michael Finley shooting an open jumper, you want him to take it." Michael Finley hit a jumper with 50 seconds left for his 10,000 career points and the crowd gave a standing ovation when his milestone was announced over the PA. Dallas led 36-25 after 1. Dallas' lead hovered around 9 points most of the 2nd quarter. 3-pointers surrounded a Shane Battier free throw and Dallas led 55-41 with 4 minutes remaining. Dallas led 63-47 at the half. Dirk Nowitzki had 19 points including 8-9 FG. Dallas shot 60% (24-40) FG and Memphis shot 40% (18-45) FG in the half. Steve Nash converted a 3-point play to give Dallas a 71-53 lead with 9:35 left, but Memphis scored the next 9 points to pull with in 62-71 with 7:35 to go. Dallas scored the next 5 points to put their lead back in double-digits. Dallas went on a 12-1 run, capped by 5 points from Wang Zhizhi, to go up 86-69 with 3 minutes left. Dallas led 94-75 after 3. Jason Williams picked up 2 technicals for complaining to the refs during the 3rd quarter and was ejected. The 4th quarter was pure garbage time. Dallas took their largest lead at 109-86 with 4:40 left. Memphis closed the game with a 14-2 run to make the final score not indicative of the actual game. Dallas won 111-100. It should have been an easy win and it was. The Mavs took care of business early and only Michael Finley and Eduardo Najera played more than 30 minutes. Dallas shot 55.8% FG and Memphis shot only 42.9% FG. Dirk Nowitzki led the way for Dallas with 24 points including 10-12 FG and 3-4 3-pointers and 7 rebounds in just 23 minutes. Finley had 13 points and 5 steals and Nash had 13 points and 5 assists in just 21 minutes. Wang Zhizhi had his best game as a Mav with 18 points (and not all of them were in garbage time) on 7-9 FG and 4-4 3-pointers. Unfortunately, he left the game in the 4th quarter with a sprained ankle - he's listed as day-to-day. Adrian Griffin started and had 10 points on 5-7 FG and 5 rebounds. Raef LaFrentz was again limited by foul trouble and had just 4 points and 4 rebounds in 23 minutes. Rookie sensation Pau Gasol was the high man for Memphis with 23 points including 9-15 FG and 5 rebounds. Stromile Swift had 20 points. Lorenzen Wright had 14 points and 9 rebounds off the bench and Shane Battier had 12 points including 3-10 FG and 7 rebounds. Jason Williams had 8 points including 3-11 FG and 10 assists before his ejection. After he received his first technical, the refs gave him some leeway (he was still jawing) before tagging him with a 2nd T a few minutes later. Quotes Don Nelson: "They were tough all the way to the end. It was a good experience for our guys. You don't get many playoff atmospheres. We did have one in Portland but we weren't ready. The intensity was high tonight. We need to get to that level consistently as we prepare to go to the playoffs." Nelson on Wang: "It's not his offense, its his defense that going to take a bit longer to develop. We've said all along that we like him as a player. The more games he gets like this the better it will be for him. The idea is to not lose a game while you're developing a young player. He has the ability to shoot the ball like Dirk and the ability to do some other things that we don't allow him to do right now because I don't want him to get in trouble." Nelson on Gasol as Rookie of the Year: "[Jamaal] Tinsley, I think, is really good. But Pau is going to win it. He's clearly the best rookie that I've seen." Michael Finley on reaching 10,000 career points: "I was as surprised as anybody when they announced it. I'm thankful that I did it at home. The Dallas fans have been real good for me, so to share it with them was special." Finley on reaching 10,000: "I didn't really know it until [the PA announcer] announced it over the intercom. But it's a great honor, and I'm glad I did it at home in front of the Dallas fans. The crowd really showed their appreciation and I'm very thankful for that. Dallas fans have been real, real, real good to me, and for me to have it here and have an opportunity to share it with them, makes it even better." Dirk Nowitzki: "I think we had a good workout yesterday and we regrouped and we can't lose many more games. We can't afford it if we want to win the Midwest Division. Every loss from now on is crucial." Steve Nash: "It was a little difficult [playing the Grizzlies] after having a playoff-type week and knowing that next week on the road is going to be a playoff-type week. This game kind of fell in the middle, and it was difficult for us to approach the game the same way as we did all of the other games this week." Nash on Wang: "When he gets hot, that's when he's most effective for us. He made some shots and that was good to see." Nash: "Wang, in the 2nd half, got in there and played real loose and that was good to see." Nash: "It's nice to get a little rest. Hopefully this will help as we go on the road for 4 important games." Nash: "It's going to be a very important road trip for. You know we are going to go out there and try to win all 4." Raef LaFrentz: "We were coming into this game off a loss. You always want to right the ship as soon as you can after you get beat. Tonight we came out and did our job." LaFrentz: "The schedule doesn't get any easier. It's going to stay difficult. We play some good teams and play them at their place. We have to come out and play defensively, rebound the basketball. With the offensive power that this team has, we should do fine." Avery Johnson on playing a team like Memphis: "It's tough. It's a team that's really not going anywhere. It's tough, especially coming off a tough loss like we had against the Spurs. I commend the guys; we got the game over in 3 quarters. That's good because we got to rest Steve, Mike, and Dirk, and Raef got a little rest too. Nick got a lot of rest, so he should be ready for the road trip. It was a good night for us overall." Johnson: "A lot of guys who normally don't get much playing time got a chance to get some minutes tonight. It was good to get the starters some rest." Wang Zhizhi: "I need to improve my rebounding but my shooting was good." Sidney Lowe: "They're good. That's a tough team to match up with. They have so many weapons. People can shoot the basketball. It is a different coverage for big men, 4s and 5s, to stay out there on the perimeter with their big people that can shoot the basketball. But Nash is the biggest key because he can create something. He is so smart and aggressive, he creates gaps and opportunities, and you have to cover him. Other guys can shoot the basketball but I think that Nash is the key." Lowe on Swift: "I just talked to him and told him this is an opportunity. I told him to just go in there and play hard, leave his feet, and be aggressive. He played well. He did a nice job for us. It was good to see him go out there and be aggressive like that." Lowe on Williams' technicals: "Well I think he said something to the officials and they didn't like what he was saying. He felt that Stromile got fouled and I thought he got fouled as well. They called the technical on him but it was interesting that he was complaining about someone else. He was sticking up for his teammates." Jason Williams on Swift's game: "It's good, but it hasn't been consistent. If he does it today and then disappears for 5 games then that's not good for us. It's got to be consistent to get my respect." Stromile Swift: "I just want to play my role on the team, stay focused and not let things get to me. I was trying to play with energy and be aggressive. I just go with the flow."
