Steve Nash underwent a series of test to see if there was anything more serious in regards to the stomach virus he had last week. The tests came back negative. Dirk Nowitzki sprained his left ankle during the 2nd quarter of the Utah game and did not play in the 2nd half of the game or in the Portland game. He is probable for Thursday's Houston game. Dallas at Utah (April 8) The game stayed close in the 1st quarter with neither team holding more than a 6 point lead. Dallas led 19-13 with 5:25 to go and Utah scored the next 11 points to go up 24-19 with 3 minute remaining. Greg Buckner hit a jumper at the end of the quarter and Utah led 28-27 after 1. The game stayed close in the 3rd quarter with neither team holding more than a 5 point lead. There were 5 ties and 7 lead changes in the quarter. Dirk Nowitzki sprained his left ankle late in the quarter and did not play in the 2nd half. Raef LaFrentz stupidly fell for a fake by Karl Malone behind the 3-point line and fouled him with just 1 second left in the quarter. Malone hit all 3 free throws to give Utah a 57-56 lead at the half. This is not a recording, the game stayed close in the 3rd quarter as neither team held more than a 5 point lead. There were just 2 ties and 5 lead changes. Dallas led 77-75 after 3. Nick Van Exel hit a 3-pointer and Michael Finley hit a jumper to open the 4th quarter and gave Dallas their largest lead at 82-75 with 10:15 remaining, but Dallas' lead would get not larger as Donyell Marshall answered with a 3-pointer and the game stayed close. A jumper by John Stockton tied the game at 88-88 with 6 minutes left, but Van Exel banked in a 3-pointer (with a grin) to trigger an 11-4 run and Dallas led 99-92 with 2:45 left. Malone hit 2 free throws and a jumper to pull Utah within 96-99 with 2 minutes to go. Buckner answered with a layup as the shot clock was running down and neither team scored on their next 2 possessions. LaFrentz missed inside, but Finley tipped the ball in with 21 seconds remaining to give Dallas a 7 point lead. Utah missed and 2 free throws by Steve Nash capped the scoring. Dallas won 105-96. Utah is no longer the team they used to be and I really didn't fear for Dallas in this game, despite it remaining close for most of the game. Dallas shot 47.3% FG and Utah shot 41.8% FG, but Dallas out-rebounded Utah 46-40 including 16-11 offensive. Utah did attempt a lot more free throws in this game (25-31 FT for Utah, 13-15 FT for Dallas), but Dallas was settling for the outside shot for most of the game. Dallas actually played better in the 2nd half than the first, despite Dirk Nowitzki's absence - most of that was due to Michael Finley stepping up in the 2nd half. Finley shot poorly in the 1st half and had just 4 points, but finished with 20 points including 10 in the 4th quarter. Finley also had 6 rebounds. Nick Van Exel also had a strong 2nd half with 10 of his 20 points coming in the 4th quarter. Van Exel dished out 8 assists in the game. Steve Nash shot poorly (6-19 FG), but did have 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists. Nowitzki had 10 points and 3 rebounds in just 16 minutes. Eduardo Najera had a nice game with 10 points and 9 rebounds and defended Karl Malone some. Raef LaFrentz didn't look good with just 7 points and 6 rebounds in 26 minutes. Malone led the way for Utah with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, and 5 turnovers. He had 10 points in the 4th quarter. Malone had missed the previous game due to his knee bothering him, but played well in this game (his knee seemed to bother him early, though). John Stockton didn't look like a 40 year-old with his 17 points including 7-11 FG, 5 rebounds, 8 assists, and just 1 turnover. Andrei Kirilenko had 14 points including 4-12 FG and 5 rebounds and Bryon Russell had 14 points and 6 rebounds. Donyell Marshall had a double-double off the bench with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Quotes Don Nelson: "I challenged the team at halftime. We needed to step it up and we did. I like this team a lot. They have a lot of character." Nelson: "It was a good bounce-back win for us. It was hard fought not having Nowitzki in the 2nd half. I challenged the team a bit at halftime. We needed to step it up and we did." Nelson: "Van Exel was sensational once again and he really is playing with a nice rhythm. I needed him and I had to go with him." Michael Finley: "Everybody had to step up. Nick played great. He made some really big shots down the stretch." Finley: "This is a nice facility. I've always been a fan of the Delta Center; I guess that's the reason my shot was going down. I took it upon myself to be more assertive in the 2nd half and do the things that I had to do to make this team win the ballgame. If I hadn't been aggressive, we would have easily lost this game." Dirk Nowitzki on if he'll miss more playing time due to the injury: "I can be in pain while I play as long as it makes sense. We also know the playoffs are more important than one game before them, so we'll see how I feel." Nowitzki: "Every game is big now. I've never blown a game off and I want to try to keep my rhythm. If it's not too bad, I want to try to play." Nowitzki on his sprained ankle: "I rolled it stepping on someone's foot. I got out of the game and I got back in and tried to run and it was just too sore. I iced it down and I'll ice it again tomorrow morning. But I don't know if I'm going to play tomorrow night." Nowitzki on spraining his ankle again: "I keep on stepping on someone's foot all the time." Steve Nash: "It was a big win. It wasn't necessarily a good performance, but it was still a good win without our leading scorer in the 2nd half. Mike made huge shots for us and Nick made a bunch of really big plays down the stretch. 2 huge performances." Nick Van Exel: "I still felt confident with my shot. In the 4th quarter, when we were right there, I just started being more aggressive, attacking a bit more." Van Exel on the 4th quarter: "In that quarter, we were right there, and I just started being more aggressive and attacking a little bit more. And Finley made some big shots for us in the 4th quarter." Van Exel: "When we ran the pick-and-roll, I knew Michael would be able to get free. Michael just happened to be the last guy on the food chain, but I feel good about him having the ball in his hands." Jerry Sloan: "I think it's an attitude about wanting to win and coming and demanding it of yourself that you are going to win. We haven't been able to finish in those games." Sloan: "We haven't been able to finish. Our shot selection could have been a tad better." Sloan on Dallas' offensive rebounds: "They're quick. You've got to give them credit. But it appeared to me we weren't quite physical enough with them." Sloan: "Our guys played hard. We're putting rookies into a situation where it gives them an opportunity to play. And they have gotten better." Karl Malone: "They got a lot of offensive rebounds - got some big ones down the stretch - and that really hurt us. It goes back to the old saying: You've got to be able to guard somebody individually. 1-on-1 defense is where you've got to step up and stop people and, quite frankly, I don't think we do a good job of that." Malone: "I like to win. Maybe that's to a fault, because it makes a lot of things bad when you don't. Maybe I shouldn't take it personal when we lose. Maybe I should be like other people - just go with the flow. Who knows? Maybe I've got it all wrong." Malone when asked about his right knee, which has been bothering him: "I played, suited up, I was out there." John Stockton: "I think we need to recognize that we can't afford, against these better teams, to play like them. We have to be clicking on all cylinders all of the time to play against them, and we're not doing that." Donyell Marshall on clinching a playoff berth: "We're not satisfied with just getting in. Our next move is to get ahead of Seattle. I mean, it's gonna be tough, but we have to do what we have to do." Scott Padgett: "Being close really doesn't matter. I don't think you really get any satisfaction out of playing good but losing." Padgett: "I think the offensive rebounds are what beat us tonight." The game stayed close for most of the 1st quarter with neither team holding more than a 4 point lead. Dallas scored 7 straight points to go up 34-26 with 30 seconds left. 2 free throws from Dale Davis capped the scoring in the quarter. Dallas led 34-28 after 1. It was a fast paced quarter with both teams pushing the ball and shooting well. Dallas shot 68% FG and Portland shot over 50% FG. Michael Finley and Rasheed Wallace had 10 points each. The pace slowed down in the 2nd quarter as the refs dominated the quarter. Wallace crazily picked up a technical for jawing at the ref while sitting at the scorers table waiting to sub in a minute into the quarter. Adrian Griffin hit a layup and Raef LaFrentz nailed a 3-pointer to give Dallas a 42-30 lead with 9:20 remaining. In one of the worst displays I've seen of a ref inappropriately asserting his power, Don Vaden refused to allow Steve Nash to sub in for Nick Van Exel in claiming that Nash was not at the scorers table in time. The sub was occurring in between free throws for Bonzi Wells and Wells had not been handed the ball yet. Refs are normally lenient in allowing subs, but Vaden stopped the game, went over to Van Exel (who was on the bench with the trainer looking at his head (he had bumped his head)), and told Van Exel to get back in the game. There was no reason not to allow the sub and Vaden was just being a jerk in not permitting it. Don Nelson wanted an explanation why the sub was not being allowed and had a conversation with Vaden. During the conversation, Vaden gave Nelson a T (Nelson says he didn't say much, didn't curse) and Nelson went nuts - I'm amazed that he didn't get a 2nd T, but this whole situation was bogus. Dallas used a 20 second timeout to sub Van Exel out. With Dallas up by 10, the refs again stepped in as Shawn Bradley was called for consecutive blocking fouls despite the fact that he was just standing there and the Blazer had ran into him and then the next time down the court, Wells was heading in on the break and Wang Zhizhi headed towards him and decided to let him go at the last minute (absolutely no contact) and Wells blew the layup and Wang was called for the foul [and the place went nuts]. The refs continued their ineptitude by calling a make up foul on Portland on Dallas' next possession. Dallas led 52-44 on Wang's free throws with 3:45 to go. Damon Stoudamire hit a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left and Dallas led 56-52 at the half. Scottie Pippen scored on a layup to pull Portland within 2 points, but Dallas was able to hang on to the lead. Dallas scored 7 straight points to go up 74-65 with 4 minutes to go. The teams traded baskets and Portland scored the next 6 points to pull within 73-76 with a minute left. But all was not good for Portland as Wallace picked up his 2nd technical for complaining/glaring about a non-call and was ejected. Dallas led 79-73 after 3. Van Exel hit consecutive 3-pointers to give Dallas a 88-77 lead with 8:45 remaining. Portland scored the next 7 points, capped by a 3-pointer by Stoudamire, to pull within 84-87 with 6 minutes to go. The teams traded buckets and Finley nailed a 3-pointer. Shawn Kemp hit an open jumper and Finley was fouled attempting a 3-pointer. His 3 free throws and a dunk by Raef LaFrentz gave Dallas a 97-88 lead with 2:40 left. Wells was shooting free throws with 2:15 left and Van Exel was blocking Pippen behind the 3-point line to prevent Pippen from going for the rebound. Pippen shoved Van Exel and walked away. After the made free throw, as the 2 were coming up the court, Van Exel intentionally bumped Pippen. Pippen responded by shoving Van Exel and then threw an air punch and the 2 were separated by players and refs. Each received a technical. While the play was still dead, Pippen directed some comments towards the refs and received a 2nd T and was ejected. Dallas scored the next 5 points to go up 102-90 with just 1:30 left. Dallas won 108-96. Like most Dallas-Portland games, this was not a pretty game. It was physical and, unfortunately, marred by poor officiating. To think I complained about the refs in the San Antonio game. Blane Reichelt and Don Vaden were simply incompetent in this game. I'm sure Portland fans can come up with their own complaints on bad calls/non-calls those 2 made. I guess it was lucky that Mark Cuban was in New York attending league meetings instead of at this game as he would have blown a gasket with the dismal performance of those 2 refs. As for the game itself, Dallas did play well without star Dirk Nowitzki and actually held Portland even on the rebounds (43-43 and just an 11-8 advantage for Portland on the offensive rebounds) - really amazing since Nowitzki is Dallas' leading rebounder. Michael Finley led the way for Dallas with 27 points including 8-10 FT (as he took the ball inside a lot, for a change) and 6 rebounds. Raef LaFrentz re-appeared and had a double-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Nick Van Exel provided a needed boast with Nowitzki's absence and had 21 points off the bench. Steve Nash had 14 points and 9 assists with just 1 turnover. Wang Zhizhi came in during the 2nd quarter and hit 2 3-pointers. He hit a 3rd 3-pointer in the 3rd quarter before he missing on his last attempt. He was active defensively and on the rebounds - his game has improved a lot in this past season. Wang had 11 points including 3-4 3-pointers and 6 rebounds. The role players Eduardo Najera, Greg Buckner, and Adrian Griffin didn't have interesting stats, but all played a key role in this game. In starting for the injured Nowitzki, Najera continued an amazing tread of Dallas winning. Dallas is 7-0 in Eddie starts. Another amazing Dallas stat: Dallas is 46-1 when leading after 3 quarters this season (the 1 loss coming against the Lakers). Portland was lead by Bonzi Wells, who had 26 points including 8-11 FT and 9 rebounds. Rasheed Wallace had 16 points and 6 rebounds before his ejection. Pippen had 10 points and 8 rebounds before his ejection. Damon Stoudamire had 16 points and Dale Davis had 12 points and 6 rebounds. Dallas' bench out-scored Portland's 41-16. Quotes Don Nelson: "I'm really proud of the way these guys have played the last 2 games. They have responded well to a lot of negatives. I thought our zone defense was effective tonight and our guys just really gave a good effort. I thought we came out aggressive on both ends of the floor tonight. Our guys showed little effect of having just played last night in Utah." Nelson: "We stood our ground and did it the right way - without getting thrown out and by just being tough mentally and tough physically." Nelson on the non-stars' play: "They did everything. They had opportunities and made the most of it." Nelson on Nowitzki not playing: "I don't have any choice; I have to deal with the injuries. I'm not saving these guys for the playoffs, but I'm not going to play these guys if they're injured." Michael Finley on the last 2 games: "These wins were big. 2 quality teams, 2 playoff teams and we were undermanned without Dirk tonight and we still were able to come out with a win." Finley on the team stepping up without Nowitzki: "We had to step it up. Eduardo, Griffin, Buckner, and Wang all stepped up. Coach Nelson emphasized that before the game that it was going to take a total team effort. The guys off the bench were one of the main reasons we won the game." Finley on playing aggressive and physical against Portland: "Tonight we were the ones initiating the contact, initiating the plays offensively and defensively, and we set the tone early as the aggressor and that was another reason why we won the game." Finley: "It's no cakewalk going into the playoffs. There are no easy games. It's good for us to start playing against teams we'll see in the playoffs. We'll be ready mentally." Finley: "I'm just trying to make the most of the opportunities when I get them." Dirk Nowitzki on not playing: "I never like days off and right before the playoffs I want to keep my rhythm. I don't want to lose my rhythm, but we also know that the playoffs are more important than anything in the season." Nowitzki on his sprained ankle: "I got taped before the game and I just couldn't run. I couldn't elevate and it just didn't make sense [to play]. I'm going to get some treatment tomorrow and hope to be ready by Thursday. But I don't have to push anything with the playoffs coming up." Nick Van Exel: "We picked it up in the 2nd half and got a little bit of a lead. Once we started to get into an up and down tempo, it was better for us. [Portland] did a good job of getting to Steve early so we really couldn't get going into our transition game." Van Exel on Portland's view of Dallas: "They approached us like we're soft. I'm getting all the phone calls from their players about how they're going to do this to us and do that to us, and I told the guys before the game, 'This team really feels we have no heart.' That's a terrible situation to be in. You never want anybody to feel that toward you." Van Exel on Portland's view of Dallas: "That's really how they feel about us: We're a bunch of soft white boys and can't get it done. We've got to step up. White, black, green - it doesn't matter. This team has a great record with a bunch of white boys." Van Exel on his scuffle with Pippen: "I was just trying to box him out at the free throw line and he sort of twisted my arm. So I gave him a shot and he gave me a shot back." Van Exel on Wang: "When Wang comes into the game, he's instant offense. We like to run a lot of pick-and-rolls with him just in case his man leaves too much room and he'll normally knock down those shots." Raef LaFrentz on comments that Dallas is soft: "Being soft - if this was boxing, that's one thing. But this is basketball. Sometimes you need to be physical, sometimes you need finesse. This group here, they went for skill rather than physical bruisers." Maurice Cheeks: "I'm a little disappointed in our game. It always happens when a star player goes out - the other players step up and play even harder. But Dallas is a little different - they have players that have started before all over their bench. We're trying to get ourselves ready for the playoffs and that isn't the way to get ourselves ready." Cheeks on if the team lost their composure: "I addressed it. I would say that we let the referees control our games. Sometimes we let the referees control the game more than our play. Referees are human - they make mistakes. Sometimes when you are losing, you may feel that the referee is working against you but they are human - they make mistakes both ways. We can't worry about that. We just need to worry about our play." Cheeks on Portland's recent play: "Sometimes you go a little down, then you go back up. I hope that is where we are going. I always try to find some silver lining somewhere and if we can get a couple of wins before the season ends and right ourselves mentally and physically, then we can go our way into the playoffs. Then, anything can happen in a playoff series and our chances are as good as any." Cheeks: "I think our mindset is fine. We were playing at such a high level a few weeks ago. We've taken a little steam out of our play. But I don't doubt our ability to step up and play at a higher level. I have no doubt about that." Cheeks on not seeing the start of the scuffle with Pippen and Van Exel: "I just turned around and saw Scottie swing. The next thing I knew there was a little melee going on." Scottie Pippen: "We needed to come out and play with more energy. We didn't start the game with the energy and the focus that we needed. I thought we could pound the ball inside with Rasheed and Dale. We didn't use that game. We tried to run and shoot with this team. It's not to our advantage against this team." Pippen: "We're looking like we're not ready for [the playoffs]." Pippen: "Right now, you want to be playing some of your best basketball, and we're not doing that. We're leading ourselves right into elimination in the 1st round, probably 1, 2, 3. We're not playing well enough to win. When you're a low seed like we are, you've got to be capable of winning on the road if you want to salvage something out of the post season, and we're not looking like we're ready for it." Bonzi Wells: "We lost a couple game - everyone loses a couple game. We still feel like we are one of the top teams in this league and we've got a bunch of talent. We lose a couple games, but we are not going to cry about it. We just have to come in and work hard tomorrow in practice and try to get back on the right track against Memphis." Wells: "It's all about us. Officials are going to be officials and we are going to be us. We have to quit chirping on them as much as we do and play the game the way it is supposed to be played." Derek Anderson: "It was just kind of a frustrating night for everybody. I don't take it for more than what it's worth. Let's just let it go and move on." Damon Stoudamire: "If you were here last year, this is about the same time everything started to fall apart. We've got to be concerned." Stoudamire: "Obviously, the way we are playing we aren't going to move up [in the playoff standings]. We have to worry about teams moving ahead of us. It's just kind of discouraging right now."
