Game 5 Dallas at Sacramento (May 13) Dallas scored the first 2 buckets of the game and the Kings went on a 14-4 run to go up 14-8 with 7:50 left. Sacramento's lead fluctuated between 2 and 7 points the rest of the quarter. Sacramento led 32-26 after 1. Chris Webber had 10 points and Michael Finley had 9 points. Dallas scored the first 5 points of the 2nd quarter to pull within 31-32 with 11 minutes to go, but Sacramento went on a 10-2 run to go up 42-33 with 7 minutes left. Sacramento held a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter. Dirk Nowitzki hit a jumper at the buzzer and Sacramento led 59-53 at the half. Nowitzki had 12 points in the quarter. Sacramento continued to hold a single-digit lead in the 3rd quarter. Webber sprained his left ankle and left the game with 8 minutes remaining - he got his ankle re-taped and was able to return with 3 minutes left in the quarter. Nowitzki scored 8 straight points to pull Dallas within 69-70 with 5:35 to go, but Sacramento scored the next 9 points, including 7 from Hidayet Turkoglu, to take their first double-digit lead at 79-69 with 2:40 left. Sacramento led 96-73 after 3. Nowitzki opened the 4th with a jumper, but Mike Bibby answered with a 3-pointer and Doug Christie hit a technical free throw (on Del Harris) to give Sacramento a 90-75 lead with 10:40 left. Steve Nash nailed a 3-pointer, but Bobby Jackson countered with a 3 of his own. Sacramento scored 6 straight points to take their largest lead at 103-86 with 6:30 to go. A 3-pointer by Nowitzki pulled Dallas within 97-107 with 3:30 remaining. The teams traded misses and then traded layups. Bibby hit a jumper with 2:10 left to give Sacramento an 111-99 lead. The teams traded misses and Dallas missed on 2 attempts. A 3-pointer by Jackson with a minute left sealed the win. Finley hit 2 free throws to cap the scoring. Sacramento won 114-101. Sacramento took the series 4-1 and advanced to the Western Conference Finals and Dallas goes home. Once again, Sacramento was simply the better team this night. Though they did not play poorly, Dallas did not play their best. Sacramento continued to be aggressive in attacking the basket and Dallas' interior defense continued to a be sieve. And Sacramento continued to do the things that prevented Dallas from running (and Dallas continued to let Sacramento do those things and settled into a halfcourt game - the running game is where Dallas excels). Dallas only had 13 fast break points. Despite it being a 13 point loss, the stat numbers were fairly even. Sacramento only made and attempted 1 more field goal and they only attempted 1 more 3-pointer and the makes were even. Sacramento only had 3 more rebounds (and 5 more offensive) and Dallas actually had 2 more assists. Both teams committed just 11 turnovers. The difference in this game was at the free throw line. Sacramento shot 26-32 FT and Dallas shot 15-20 FT. That is not to say that the loss was due to the refs or to bad calls - I felt is a decently reffed game (some missed calls here and there, but that is to be expected) - it's just that Sacramento was the more aggressive team. Mike Bibby and Chris Webber led the way for Sacramento with 23 points each. Bibby also had 6 assists and Webber had 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Hedo Turkoglu started and had a strong outing [this was the type of game I thought he'd have Saturday] with 20 points and 13 rebounds in playing all but a minute. Vlade Divac had a quiet 18 points and 5 rebounds. Doug Christie had a solid game with 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists. Bobby Jackson also had 15 points and had 6 rebounds. Neither Scot Pollard nor Gerald Wallace scored in their handful of minutes. As expected, Peja Stojakovic did not play due to his sprained right ankle. Dirk Nowitzki easily had his best game of the series with 32 points and 12 rebounds in playing all 48 minutes. Michael Finley was steady with 26 points and 6 rebounds. Steve Nash wasn't looking to score (he didn't attempt a shot until 3:40 left in the 2nd quarter) and had 12 points and 9 assists. Adrian Griffin started and started strong in scoring 8 points on 4-5 FG in the 1st quarter. He finished with 14 points on 7-11 FG and 6 rebounds in 30 minutes. Raef LaFrentz joined Nick Van Exel as the invisible men with just 7 points including 3-10 FG and 8 rebounds in 25 minutes ("only" 4 fouls in this game). Van Exel had just 6 points on 3-9 FG and 4 assists in 28 minutes. Greg Buckner had 2 rebounds and 2 fouls in 11 minutes and Eduardo Najera had 2 points and 2 fouls in 8 minutes. Wang Zhizhi had 2 free throws and 3 fouls in 6 minutes and Shawn Bradley only got on the court for a minute. In the series, Sacramento learned their lessons from the first 2 games and did not fall into the trap of playing Dallas' game - running the ball and settling for the outside shots. After the first 2 games, I thought Dallas had a good shot of winning the series due to the fact that Sacramento did fall into that trap in those games and that Dallas does have the better running game (despite what Chris Webber might think). But Sacramento settled down in the last 3 games of the series and continually took the ball inside and took full advantage of Dallas' biggest weakness - interior defense. And in Game 3, Dallas simply lacked energy for whatever reason and played one-on-one basketball instead of a team game. Games 4 and 5 were exciting games, but Dallas was never able to get their running game going and that killed them. Surprisingly, it wasn't Chris Webber who killed Dallas, it was Mike Bibby. Bibby had an awesome series in scoring and directing the game. The pick-and-roll that Bibby ran really hurt Dallas (ironic since the pick-and-roll was a main weapon for Dallas during the regular season) and he drove through Dallas' porous interior defense far too often. I would have never believed it going into this series, but Sacramento's backcourt was far superior than Dallas' in 3 of the 5 games. Sacramento also did a good job of attacking Dirk Nowitzki defensively and taking him out of his game. Simply, Sacramento was the better team in this series and deserved to win. Congrats to them and good luck against the Lakers. For Dallas, it's the start of a long summer. Though everyone is legitimately disappointed in the "early" exit from the playoffs, the reality is that this was just the 2nd year for Dallas in the playoffs after an 11 year absence. As much as we would have loved to gone all the way this year, the road to the championship rarely is that easy and teams have to go through hardships to learn how to win in the playoffs and Dallas is still a very young team. Dallas learned a good lesson last year and took what they learned last year and blew past Minnesota in the 1st round this year. Unfortunately, Sacramento also has learned playoff lessons from past seasons and from their tough series against Utah and never let up on Dallas. There were a lot of things that Dallas can take from this series to help them grow more next year. The biggest is that you _have_ to play at least some interior defense, otherwise a good team will kill you inside. It is the biggest thing the team needs to improve on in the off season. I still say that the defensive 3-seconds rule really hurt Dallas in that the team did have good weakside help defense in the past few seasons, but it was non-existent this season. The complete disappearance of Shawn Bradley this season was part of the problem, but not the complete problem. Maybe a miracle will happen and Bradley will actually improve over the summer (unfortunately, he tends not to work much on his game during the off season). The team can improve just by the players already on the team improving their games. Dirk Nowitzki took another step forward in the Minnesota series (and a half of a step back in the Sacramento series) in his continued growth toward superstardom. Nowitzki averaged 28.4 points and 13.1 rebounds in the 8 playoffs games. The team looks for him to improve his passing game this summer (and he's added something to his game each off season) and he turns just 24 in June. Steve Nash, who is 28, simply needs to get some rest this summer. And Michael Finley, who is 29, always works on his game in the off season. The 3 comprise the core of this team and talk of trading any of them is foolish. Raef LaFrentz is a (restricted) free agent this summer and will likely be re-signed. He should strongly benefit from an off season and training camp with Dallas - his game has many place where it needs to improve and he's young enough (26) where the improvement can still take place. Talk is that Nick Van Exel will be back and going for 6th man next year. He is a tradeable commodity, though. Adrian Griffin is under contract for one more season (and at a very cheap price) and will be back. His back problems do remain a concern, though. Eduardo Najera, Greg Buckner, and Wang Zhizhi are free agents and I expect all to be back (unless someone offers crazy money to one of them). Unfortunately, Wang will once again miss training camp and join the team after the season has started - it really hinders his development that he is not here for the summer leagues or training camp. Johnny Newman is a free agent and Danny Manning still has a year left on his contract, but I don't know if either will be back. Evan Eschmeyer, Tariq Abdul-Wahad, and Avery Johnson all have longer contracts and will back, unless traded away. I really don't expect the team to make major changes in the off season - maybe add a role player or 2 and a no-name rookie or free agent (or maybe a no-name rookie free agent). This team does not have cap room to go after any big names and I doubt a big name that would fit this team would be available via a non-Big 3 trade [stop the Finley rumors _now_!]. This team simply needs to continue growing and maturing. Nowitzki (Germany), Nash (Canada), Finley (USA), and Bradley (Germany) will all be playing in the World Championship games August 29 through September 8 (not including warmup games). Sometime in the next few weeks, Nick Van Exel is expected to undergo surgery on his left elbow to remove bone spurs, Dirk Nowitzki is expected to undergo surgery on both ankles to remove bone spurs, and Adrian Griffin will undergo back surgery to fix/help with the back problems that have plagued him all season. Quotes Rick Adelman: "Obviously, we are just really excited. I can't say enough about this group. What they did in Dallas, and then coming back here. All we talked about was to come out with a determined effort tonight and put the pressure on Dallas because the pressure was on them. We didn't want them to get life. We wanted to stay on top of them. We got Chris in foul trouble again, but it seems like on this team, somebody always steps up. Tonight it was Hedo, who just the exploded on them, which we were waiting for him to do. We had such faith in him. He plays such a great all-around game, defending and rebounding. Mike Bibby, obviously, has just been terrific this whole series. I don't know where you start, or where you end. This group, without Peja, just took it upon themselves to win this thing. Now we move on to the next round. Hopefully we will have a few days to rest and get some of our people who are banged up rested." Adelman on starting Turkoglu over Jackson: "I really found that kind of funny. Everyone said that it was such a great move on my part and we were only down 12-1 [to start] in the last game. I wasn't concerned about who starts or what was going to happen. The last game I did because of the matchups. Bobby and Mike were better. When they took one of the small guards out, I could bring in Hedo and now we had a bigger lineup. So it was pretty simple to me. Tonight I always wanted to start Hedo. I didn't the last game because of that. I just think that when he starts, I was hoping he would get something going. When he starts, he seems to play a little bit better. When they didn't start Van Exel, it gave me a great opportunity to put Hedo out there. And plus it gave us an opportunity to keep him on Nowitzki. That was really the reason. I was really hoping he would get off and he did." Adelman on the backcourt: "I think it was huge. There is no doubt about it. Mike Bibby was just solid. You don't play any better than that in a big playoff series and for Bobby Jackson to step like he did in the last 2 games, you can't say enough about those 2 guys. I think everybody did think they did have an advantage on us. But I think Bobby and Mike took that as a challenge. They know they are pretty good players too and they wanted to go after them." Adelman: "I got a lot of respect and faith in these guys and they've responded so much last year and this year was just unbelievable the way they responded. They're a resilient group. They're a competitive group. I've said it time and time again, I always thought it was funny when people doubted them. They just respond too much. I have great faith in them. No matter who went down, we felt we could win if we could just stay together and I thought that was the whole key. We stayed together and you need guys to step up and we certainly had guys step up." Adelman on Dallas: "I don't think they came out slow, I really didn't. I thought they came out really determined. Nowitzki came out strong. Finley was good again. That's a very good team over there. I told some of their players, for 3 games, those 3 games could have went either way. We could have been sitting here coming back to Sacramento down 3-1. We made plays though. We earned those wins. We put ourselves in a position tonight to finish it and we did it. But that team is a heck of a team. They have a heck of a coach. They're going to be around for a long time. You can't even imagine when you try to prepare for them how hard it is. It is very, very difficult to prepare against that team. Every time we'd score that one period when we're up 15, they'd score within 5 seconds. I told our guys, come on, at least make them use 10 or 15 seconds. They're a good team. We deserve this, but I feel fortunate to win, but I think our team really deserves the victory." Adelman: "I thought we played in the half court, we got them into the half court, for the most part we really were pretty good. I give tremendous credit to Elston Turn and John Wetzel. They handled the defense, they came up with the schemes. We talked it all through and they prepared this team really well. I think where we got hurt during the whole series was transition defense, but I don't know how you stop that against this team. They're just so explosive. In half court, they scored, but we controlled a lot of it and, then again like I said before, we wanted to be sure that they could not stop us. We wanted to keep putting pressure on them on the offensive end. I think we did that for most of this series where they really had a problem with us." Adelman: "What we have to do is get rested and maybe get healthy for the next round. We've accomplished a whole lot this season, but nobody in our locker room thinks we're done yet. We've got more goals." Adelman: "I thought when we got them into halfcourt, for the most part we were really good. They still scored a lot, but we seemed to dominate by being able to keep pressure on them on our offensive end. The only game we lost was when we got caught in their running game. It's difficult to control, but we had to keep the pace in our favor to be able to win." Adelman on Christie: "He's an amazing guy. He plays through so much. He's one of the toughest people I've been around." Chris Webber: "For me, I don't want to get caught up thinking about it because this is always something I can enjoy. Hopefully we have a longer road ahead, but in my 9 year career, this is the furtherest I've been and it just feels good. It just feels good, but I just shouldn't even start thinking back at it because we have a long way to go and looking back at how hard it's been would only make it probably that much harder to keep going. It feels good right now, but we still have work to do." Webber: "We all believe in each other. It doesn't surprise me how good Hedo plays. I told him at halftime that all the shots are going in and out and that means you can't do any better, just wait. I'm just glad he was aggressive and kept going. We all have faith in each other. I have to check Hedo in practice. I know that Hedo's a monster. We all know what each other can do. We have the ultimate faith in each other, so it doesn't surprise us. Webber: "Just the fact that 4 years ago we came together and we came together with a goal and that was to win a championship and to get as far as we can. They guys that were here first - Lawrence Funderburke to Vlade to myself - we stuck with it. Peja, then getting Hedo, we stuck with it. then we get Bobby Jackson, we stuck with it. We have Mike Bibby now, one of the best point guards in the game, and we're sticking with it. In other words, it is a collective effort, from the Maloofs to Geoff Petrie to our coach to the players and it's just a testament to hopefully just building on something, not a quick fix. This isn't something that we did this year. This is something that we've been building on and God's been blessing us to get different pieces and different personal. So I think it just says that we're all goal oriented and once we make our goal, we try to stick to it until we finish it." Webber: "It is as sweet as it could be. Because the worst thing when you make a decision to stay or to leave is that you just worry you'll make a wrong decision. You worry you affected other people, not just yourself, but your family and friends, those you could have been closer to. But I've been saying it all year: the best part about this season is never having a doubt. Even when I was injured, even when the team was better without me, better with me, even all those things. I just knew I was in the right place. Last year I don't think anybody realized how much prayer and waiting for the right answer I did. I'm just glad it's just the right decision. I just asked the Lord to help me with it and asked some people in my life what did they think and I'm really happy I stayed here. It's funny because I think last year everybody felt I was leading everyone on and acting like I was loyal, then I'd split. And it feels good to show the people in Sacramento that I meant what I said. And hopefully we can get what we all been waiting for." Webber: "We all came back together. We know this isn't a championship - we're just celebrating the moment. It feels good and we got a long ways to go." Webber on what he said to Turkoglu: "Well, I told Hedo that he's my brother and I said that I don't care if he misses a 100 shots in a row, he's got to take the next one, because they can't check him. And that's how we do it; we're a team, baby." Mike Bibby on the pre-series talk about Dallas having the advantage in the backcourt: "The whole thing's got me very motivated. I am ready for the Western Conference Finals, I'm ready for the Finals. Everyone had the advantage to the Mavericks, looking down the line, we can't run with them, we can't do this. That kind of motivated me. It really doesn't matter what people outside us say, we know what we're capable of doing. We did it and we just got to keep rolling." Bibby: "I'm happy. I'm happy with the whole team play. I think this is the best we've been playing all season. Everybody is together. We're playing defense a lot better. We're helping each other a lot more. We came together at a great time." Bibby: "We didn't let anything distract us, and that's hard in a series like this. We got a lot of motivation from stuff that some people thought we couldn't do." Bibby: "You got to play hard the whole game. There is no time to take off. If you play both ends of the court, you'll be all right." Vlade Divac: "This was a great night for us, but it was just another step toward our ultimate goal. We are going to celebrate tonight, but tomorrow it is just a whole other deal. We have to focus and prepare for the next series. We have built something special here in the last 4 years and every year we move forward, and we really want to move forward in the next year." Divac: "We're a good team. This is a really deep team. Everybody makes their contribution." Hidayet Turkoglu on ending his slump: "I really feel good right now. I've been slumping a lot and finally today I start making some shots and trying to help my teammates and I'm very happy right now. And I think my confidence came back right now. And I'm very confident right now and know I'm going to help my teammates in the finals." Turkoglu on ending his slump: "It was really important. Showed myself, I was making shots. I knew what I was doing. It was really helping me. And I did the same thing, like I did in the past, tonight and started making shots." Turkoglu: "All the guys keep telling me to be aggressive, your shots will come. Like Webb said, my first shots simply was in and out. They just been telling me to keep shooting, keep being aggressive." Turkoglu: "I said before the game that I was going to play good defense and stay aggressive. I know because I could only play better. I was not letting game come to me. Coach [Carril] talks to me, tells me all the time, 'Don't rush, Hedo.' And my teammates tell me, 'Keep shooting.' So I knew tonight that I was going to do good. And when I hit first shot, I got my confidence back." Turkoglu: "I just wanted to contribute since I had been struggling a lot this series. The guys had confidence in me, and my shots started falling." Turkoglu: "I want to thank my teammates - they were helping me. They be telling me to keep shooting ball. I got my confidence. I want to thank my teammates, coach, everybody. I'm very happy." Bobby Jackson: "Oh yeah, most definitely, that was a lot of fun. We want to go with it. That's our motto. I wish we could do that all the time. I love being in there when guarding someone my size. They can't handle me." Jackson: "We knew it was do or die for them and we wanted to come out and play our best basketball and get everybody involved. Coach always said that if we move the ball, they can't guard us. So we moved the ball extremely well and we just came out and played hard tonight." Jackson on Nash and Van Exel: "Of course. When you say 2 guys are better than me and Mike Bibby, that's kind of a slap in our face. We work just as hard as they do. They're good offensive players, but weak defensive players. I'm just being honest." Scot Pollard: "It's sweet for the guys who were there at the beginning. And when I say the beginning, I mean 4 years ago." Don Nelson: "What a great experience for our team to go through. I just love my team so much and how hard they play. We're still not where we need to be. We have a lot of growing to do to get at the level that the Kings are at. We're working hard at it. I can't say it was a great series, because great series last more than 5 games, but I will say there were a lot of great games. It was so much fun to go through this process. It's so good for my team, this learning experience that they need to get to the next level. It's going to mean so much to them individually when they get together next year. I'm really happy with that. I'm so proud of my team. We had such a wonderful year. So many ups, very few downs, and we were beaten in a series by a better team. The Kings are a better team, they deserve to win. We only really played one bad game - that was game 3 at our place where we didn't have the energy and that kind of a situation that I thought we were solidly beaten. I only had one miserable night. Other than that, I'd had to say that we played to win. We played the best that we could play and they still beat us. It would have been fun if we could have won one of our games at home and made it a great series and, of course, that would have made it a great series even if we had lost today, going back to Dallas is kind of what I was hoping for. But they were good games and wonderful games to coach in and to play in and I had no complaints about anything that happened, to be quite honest with you." Nelson: "I liked our energy level tonight. We tried to attack the weak side more, we tried to get better ball movement. The Kings are a better passing team than we are at this point. We didn't seem to get the message, no matter how much we preached it, that we needed to pass the ball more and have better ball movement, but it's good to go through this process to they'll learn by it. Sometimes it takes more than a short term memory, it takes a long term memory to remember these situations" Nelson: "I thought that Nash was trying to do what the coaches asked him, and that is to work the weak side more, so he's giving the ball up early. We were attempting to work that side. When we did it, we were pretty successful. He made a few errors, but he played hard and the opportunities weren't there for him tonight. They really moved up in his lap and took his early shots away. We were pretty good except for one game. You could give the MVP of the Kings to any one of 6 players, to be quite honest with you. My favorite was Doug Christie. I think he was so good in this series and probably had the worst stats of anybody you compare him to. But he was such a sensational player in this series. My hat is off to him personally. But all the Kings players who played, you can name anybody of their top 6, 7 guys and say, boy those guys really came to play and did a great job. And they did it every night. They really came and brought it to us. And they should really be proud of their team." Nelson on if Sacramento can win the championship: "You know, I hope so. I'm really rooting for them because I love the style of basketball they play and I think your coaching staff here is grossly underrated. I really wish them the best. Can they beat the Lakers or San Antonio? I don't know, but, man, I'm rooting for them. 'Cause, you know what, if they can maybe we can someday." Nelson on Nowitzki: "You're talking about so many minor things that can go right or wrong in a game that changes his manner. I think his energy level was better. I think he tried to do a couple of things that helped his offensive game - was to pass early and to swing the ball. Once you start doing that, then his game opens up. Then he was very aggressive and just started getting it going. He's got a lot of growth to go at this point. We love him to death, but he has another step to go before we can consider him a superstar - and that's his passing skills. It's pretty simple. He'll get it. I can't wait to start working with him on that last thing." Nelson on the guard play: "If you look at that [position], we've done pretty well all year long. Bibby's gone to a different level in this series." Nelson: "Congratulations to the Kings. Rooting for you, go for the whole thing." Michael Finley: "We've come a long way as a team and as an organization, since the time I've been here and for us to get to this point in the post season, I'm very proud of the team. I'm very proud of the individuals on the team. Dirk and Steve, specifically, are 2 guys who throughout their careers have been through some adverse situations and overcame them to become All-Stars in this league. I like those guys and give them a lot of credit for the success of this team. But with the good things come bad things and with the success of our team we had high expectations, not just to get to this round, but to advance to the next round. Unfortunately for us, we met a Sacramento team that was playing good basketball. They played better than us for 4 games, and that's all they needed to do. I wish them luck." Finley on if is this was just part of the team needing to take steps: "You try to use that as a moral victory, I guess, that we got this far and we can use it as motivation next year, but we're better than what we displayed in this series pretty much and we're not going to be satisfied with just getting to this round and be happy with winning 1 game. We just have to get better individually and, as a whole, get better as a team. Hopefully we can get passed this point next season and ultimately to a championship." Steve Nash: "We didn't deserve to win. We had a great opportunity in Dallas to put the series in our favor and blew it." Nash: "I guess you're supposed to take steps or whatever, but I think everyone has a tendency to over analyze basketball in general. I think that it's a lot simpler than we usually make it out to be. I think the reason we lost this series I think was definitely had as much to do with experience as people may make it out to be. We just didn't live up to our ability in some key stretches and some key games where we could be in a lot different position right now. Maybe we do have to take steps, maybe not. I guess the future will tell." Nash: "We have to improve defensively, there is no question, but I don't think that we have to completely change our style. We just have to be better defensively. I think we need to take more pride and more commitment at that end of the floor. We made too many errors at that end and I think we were a little bit weak in that area and that was the difference. We just didn't step up at key times and play defense and they got too many layups and that was the series." Nick Van Exel: "They continued to make big shots. And the hustle plays, they continued to get. Throughout the series they got too many easy buckets. They sort of exploited us on our pick-and-roll coverage, our pick-and-roll defense, and they plain out won the series. It was hard to get a string of stops the whole series. They're a pretty good offensive team and they really made our defense look bad. We didn't play good defense, that's the bottom line." Van Exel: "Me and Steve hadn't even made vacation plans yet, because we didn't feel like we were down 3-1. Throughout the series, we didn't feel like they could ever beat us. We never thought we wouldn't be able to come back." Van Exel: "Now, it's just an empty, hollow feeling. We've got to wait all summer to get back." Van Exel on Sacramento's chances in the next round: "Anything's possible, especially with the way Bibby's played in this series." Raef LaFrentz: "You have to take your hat off to them. They played a great series and they beat us playing our style. That's really all you can say. They had a good defensive scheme; took us out of our rhythm. It was a tough series. I said from the beginning that the team that hits their shots and maintains their style is going to win. They were able hit big shots the entire series. They showed a wide variety of character. Bobby Jackson played outstanding. We never really did a good job of maintaining their pick-and-roll, and if you want to X and O it, that's the bottom line. The pick-and-roll killed us."
