The NBA reviewed Maurice Taylor's (NY) 2-handed shove on the ref during last Wednesday's Dal-NY game and ruled that no further action would be taken. Rant time: it is absolutely ridiculous that no fine or suspension was given. Contact with the refs should not occur for any reason and the only way to make sure that remains that case is to hand down suspensions when contact occurs - heat of the moment is no excuse. The reason why you rarely see players leave the bench during fights is the players know that they will be automatically suspended if they do so. It used to be that bench players' first thought was to defend their teammate when a fight occurred. Thanks to the NBA's policy, that is no longer the case - "don't get suspended" runs through their mind. Not suspending Taylor set a very bad precedent. The next time a ref is separating quarreling players, a player's reaction may be to push the ref out of the way to continue the fight instead of a flash thought of "this is a ref, I better not touch him." [And, yes, I'd have the same rant if it was a Mav player who shoved a ref.] New Jersey at Dallas (January 14) It was the 2nd night of a back-to-back for New Jersey (but they lost a blowout the previous night and the starters sat the 4th quarter) and the Nets were without Richard Jefferson for the 3rd straight game. Avery Johnson made a change in the starting lineup in starting DeSagana Diop at center instead of the inconsistent Erick Dampier. Dallas scored 7 straight points to go up 13-6 with 7:30 to go. New Jersey pulled within 10-13 with 6:15 left, but Dallas then went on an 18-5 run to go up 28-15 with 1:30 remaining. Dallas led 32-19 after 1. Both teams shot 50% FG, but New Jersey committed 10 turnovers which Dallas converted into 16 points and Dallas did not have a turnover in the quarter. Dallas continued to pour it on in opening the 2nd quarter with an 11-1 run to go up 43-20 with 9 minutes remaining. Jeff McInnis suffered a sprained left knee early in the quarter and did not return. A 3-pointer by Jason Kidd pulled the Nets within 29-47 with 7 minutes left, but Keith Van Horn hit consecutive 3-pointers and 2 free throws to push Dallas' lead back into the 20s and Dallas led in the 20s the rest of the quarter. Dallas led 67-44 at the half. Van Horn was white hot in the quarter in shooting 5-5 3-pointers and hitting 2 free throws to score 17 points in the 2nd quarter. Dallas did not let up coming out of halftime and opened the 3rd quarter with a 16-4 run, capped by a slam dunk by Josh Howard, to give Dallas a commanding 83-48 with 6:50 to go. Dallas' lead remained in the 30s the rest of the quarter. Dallas led 93-57 after 3. Howard had 12 points including 5-6 FG in the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter was, obviously, pure garbage time as Dallas led in the 30s the entire quarter. Dallas won 110-77. It was a surprisingly easy win for the Mavs. Surprising as true blowouts have been so rare this season for the Mavs. New Jersey never led in the game and Dallas steadily built on their lead. After shooting 48.5% FG in the 1st half, New Jersey shot only 35.1% FG in the 2nd half. For the game, Dallas shot 52.6% (40-76) FG including 8-15 3-pointers (0-4 in the 4th quarter) and 22-31 FT. New Jersey shot 41.4% (29-70) FG including 3-9 3-pointers and 16-21 FT. New Jersey did have the edge with the rebounds in out-rebounding Dallas 39-36 including 12-8 offensive, but the Nets only had 7 2nd chance points. New Jersey committed 25 turnovers which Dallas converted into 36 points, while New Jersey only got 13 points off of Dallas' 13 turnovers. It was Dallas' 11th straight win vs New Jersey - the Nets have never defeated Dallas with Jason Kidd on their roster. Who would have thunk that Dallas would have such a blowout with Dirk Nowitzki having a mild game. Nowitzki had 16 points (11 shots attempted) and 3 rebounds in 27 minutes. Josh Howard was a monster with 29 points on 11-17 FG and 7-10 FT and 6 rebounds in 30 minutes. Keith Van Horn was on fire with 23 points including 8-9 FG and 5-6 3-pointers (his only miss came early in the 4th quarter). Jason Terry was the 4th Mav in double-digits with 13 points. Devin Harris only shot 1-9 FG, but dished out 7 assists (all in the first 3 quarter). DeSagana Diop had 2 points on 1-4 FG, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks in his start. Erick Dampier had an uneventful 2 points on 1-1 FG, 3 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 15 minutes. Dallas often played without a true center with Nowitzki and Van Horn on the court at the same time. Jerry Stackhouse had a quiet 5 points including 2-7 FG, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists in 19 minutes. Adrian Griffin had 3 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Jason Kidd shot well with 19 points including 8-11 FG. But he had 7 turnovers compared to 5 assists. Vince Carter had 17 points but shot 6-17 FG. Nenad Krstic was the only other Net in double-digits with 10 points including 3-4 FG. Quotes Avery Johnson: "Tonight we are excited about our effort. I thought we came out to play and set the tone in the 1st quarter. We kind of threw the first punch and kept on punching through the whole game. We were fortunate enough to put together one of our better games of the years. We were looking for a sense of urgency on a consistent basis. I think the players did a good job of challenging themselves for this game. I thought Diop did well with limited minutes with our starters tonight and I thought Dampier came out and contributed off the bench. Obviously Van Horn gave us a big lift with shooting the ball, something that we talked about at shoot around. We are trying to get him back to the way he played when we first traded for him last year and I thought he responded to the challenge." Johnson on playing Nowitzki and Van Horn at the same time: "I haven't been able to get to it this year as much as I wanted to because Diop was a factor. When he would come off the bench and block shots for us. We would primarily play Keith as a backup forward behind Dirk and that's not really what we did last year. We played he and Dirk together a little bit more. I would like to do that a little bit more this year." Johnson: "We need dirty-work guys, and DeSagana and Adrian Griffin do that for us." Josh Howard on if he looked to be more aggressive from the starter: "Not really, I just saw an opportunity and took advantage of it. There were a lot of openings out there and we just played great all-around ball on the defensive and offensive end." Howard: "Tonight's game was a good sign for us. Everybody came out and played well. Keith came out and knocked down his first 7 shots, which was a tremendous lift for us and everybody did their job tonight." Howard on the easy win: "We were overdue. We weren't expecting to beat New Jersey like that. But with our defense going like it was, we really jumped on them." Howard on his points: "That's just me being aggressive and taking advantage of the opportunities they give me." Howard on Diop starting: "I don't really know the difference. He and Damp work kind of like mirror images, as far as getting rebounds and contesting shots. So it wasn't really a big difference. We just know that DeSagana was out there [to start the game] and Damp wasn't." Devin Harris on Van Horn: "I thought they were slow to the rotations. And when Keith is feeling that good, he doesn't need much time to get it off." Keith Van Horn: "We really had a good 48 minute effort tonight. I think it's going to be a different guy every night that gets hot off the bench for us. Sometimes its going to be Devin, sometimes its going to be Stack, sometimes its going to be me. We have a talented team so you always have to be ready to take advantage of what opportunities come." Van Horn: "We have a deep team and every night, guys off the bench, it's not going to be their night. We have too much talent coming off the bench with Stack, Devin, and myself, so I think in that situation some nights it's going to be my night and other nights it's not. I'm just going to take advantage of the situations that present themselves and just let it come to me. That's all they really demand of me." Van Horn: "I felt in a great rhythm tonight. Once I hit a couple, my teammates really looked for me. I was just letting my shot go. You start to forget about everything, and that's what I did tonight." Van Horn: "I felt really good out there. I've been feeling good the past couple of games so I knew that over the course of the season, things eventually would fall into place. I always believe in the law of averages." Van Horn: "We need to create our own energy every night and that starts right at the beginning of the game, and we haven't necessarily done that the last couple of games. We've relied on last minute heroics and fortunately we were able to get those wins, but you're not always going to be able to win those games as was evident in New York. If we come out and have 48 minutes of energy, well put ourselves in situations where we wont have to depend on last second shots to win games." Van Horn: "We've had so many close games. It seems like every game we've played the last 2 weeks has been a cliffhanger. It's good to get a win like this." Erick Dampier on not starting: "You've got to be a professional about it." DeSagana Diop on starting: "It feels good. I get nervous before every game. But once I was out there, it was the same as any other game." Diop on starting: "I wanted to play good so bad and make coach look good. I couldn't even take a nap. I kept waking up and thinking about it. Before the game, it was different. But as soon as the game started, it was just like normal. It was just like I was coming off the bench." Lawrence Frank: "Looking at the points off turnovers - in the half court Nowitzki hit 2 shots late in the shot clock, but otherwise, our turnovers led to their easy opportunities and it snowballed from there. It was a combination of things; in the past month we've done a good job of running the floor with numbers. [Tonight] we weren't getting numbers. We're making plays but its a 2-on-2 instead of a 3-on-2. Or on some we're just dropping balls and it's hard to defend a steal. It just deflates you. We didn't have a good flow and just didn't help ourselves tonight." Frank: "The 2nd quarter, Van Horn got his 3s, and I can see each and every one of them. Obviously that turned the tide." Frank: "Van Horn's 3s, I can see each and every one of them. He gets 3 against the zone, he gets 1 in transition, he gets 1 off the pick-and-roll. Obviously, that turned the tide." Frank: "I think you have to give Dallas credit. They were a far better team than we were tonight. I don't think any player goes into the game thinking bad thoughts. But Dallas just imposed their will and totally played at a much higher level. We win together, we lose together. We're all accountable for this type of performance and it's embarrassing. But we know in this league that every night you have to be ready." Jason Kidd on the turnovers: "Maybe just pressing a little bit. We had some balls hit hands. Normally people catch them. It's just part of the game. We just got to work through it." Vince Carter on the problems: "I am not going to say it was effort. Who wants to get beat by 40? They just knocked the wind out of us early. It was more frustration, because everything we tried to do - we turned it over, we didn't make shots, we didn't make layups. We didn't do anything." Carter: "It was a tough game. We've had 2 tough games in a row and 3 losses. I think we didn't bring our A game. We didn't even bring our B game, so we've got to go back to the drawing board and get some home cooking." Carter on the 1st half: "I think turnovers were key, on top of them getting points off our turnovers. That was big thing. And they shot the 3-point shot very well and it put us in a big hole early." Jason Collins: "Well, the turnovers and with them shooting the high field goal percentage from the floor tonight. We just had a lot of times where it seemed like we were rushing out there and not taking care of the ball, and that led to a lot of easy transition baskets." Jacque Vaughn: "You turn it over 10 times to a team that likes to get off to quick starts, that's not good to do. A few were offensive fouls that you can live with. The rest were careless, which you can't live with. And we paid the price. We really paid a steep price tonight." Scott Padgett on the 1st quarter effort: "Whether we win or lose a game like this, it can't happen. You give them a lead, you do nothing right, and the effort was ... not great. When you play a team like Dallas, you've got to show up. And we didn't show up. I mean, in just about every facet of the game - turning the ball over, missing assignments. It's about as bad as we can play." Keith Van Horn hit a 3-pointer to give Dallas at 25-22 lead with 50 seconds left, but Maurice Williams answered with a 3. Van Horn was fouled near the end of the quarter and twisted his ankle landing. Grimacing, he stayed on the court to shoot the free throws (giving Dallas the lead), but did not play in the rest of the game. Dallas led 27-25 after 1. Williams opened the 2nd quarter with a jumper, but Dallas then scored the next 6 points to go up 33-27 with 9:30 to go. Dallas led 43-38 with 5:15 to go and the Mavs went on a 9-1 run to go up 52-39 with 2:10 remaining. Dallas led 58-45 at the half. Dirk Nowitzki had 17 points. Dallas shot 50% FG and Milwaukee shot 48% FG, but Dallas was out-rebounding Milwaukee 23-15 including 9-2 offensive. Dallas went to Nowitzki early and often in the 3rd quarter as the Bucks often played with a small lineup (1 center, 3 guards, and 1 small forward or 1 center and 4 guards) and Nowitzki took advantage of the mismatches. Nowitzki hit a 3-pointer and 2 free throws to open the quarter to give Dallas a 63-45 lead with 10:45 left. Dallas led 80-59 with 4:15 to go (21 points was Dallas' largest lead of the quarter) and Milwaukee went on a 9-2 run to pull within 68-82 with 2:30 remaining (14 points was as close as Milwaukee got in the quarter). Dallas led 89-73 after 3. Nowitzki had 16 points in the quarter. Dallas opened the 4th quarter with a 13-4 run to take a commanding 102-77 lead with 8:10 to go. Dallas led in the 20s for all but the last 30 seconds of the quarter as Milwaukee scored the last 5 points of garbage time. Dallas won 114-95. It was the 2nd straight blowout for the Mavs and it was really nice to see them have 2 easy ones, especially right before an 11 day road trip. The only concern is how long Keith Van Horn will be out - he was able to walk off the court, but it was an outside sprain, which can be painful. He's listed as doubtful for tonight's game vs Houston. For this game, Dallas took advantage of the many mismatches with Milwaukee throwing out smaller lineups and Dirk Nowitzki feasted on them (in fact, Nowitzki could have scored more if Devin Harris did a little better of a job of getting Nowitzki the ball with each mismatch (as Nowitzki let him know a couple of times)). The Mavs won this one with rebounds and taking advantage of Milwaukee's turnovers. The Bucks did shot well, but committed 18 turnovers which Dallas converted into 29 points (Milwaukee got 11 points off of Dallas' 11 turnovers). Dallas shot 51.9% (40-77) FG including 6-10 3-pointers and 28-36 FT. Milwaukee shot 49.3% (34-69) FG including 8-16 3-pointers and 19-24 FT. Dallas out-rebounded Milwaukee 42-31 including 14-5 offensive (and 2 of those for Milwaukee came late in the game). Dallas faces Houston tonight and then head to the West coast for 4 games. Milwaukee held a players meeting after the game. Dirk Nowitzki was feeling it, helped by being defended often by smaller players, and had a game high 35 points including 14-21 FG and 2-2 3-pointers. He only had 4 rebounds, though, but did have 4 assists. Josh Howard again played well and attacked the basket often. He had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds including 6 offensive. Jason Terry was the 3rd Mav with 20+ points. He had 20 points and 5 assists. Devin Harris had 12 points and 3 steals. Erick Dampier was very active off the bench in this game including a strong swat and a slam dunk (his only bucket). He had 10 rebounds in 14 minutes. DeSagana Diop had 6 rebounds and 2 blocks in his 2nd start. Keith Van Horn had 9 points including 3-4 FG in 6 minutes before his injury. Jerry Stackhouse had 8 points and 3 rebounds. Michael Redd is an offensive force with such a quick released. He had 20 points including 11-12 FT, but also had 5 turnovers. Maurice Williams had 18 points on 8-11 FG off the bench. Bobby Simmons was the only other Buck in double-digits with 13 points. He also had 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Andrew Bout had 8 rebounds and 5 fouls. Quotes Avery Johnson: "Tonight was another pretty good game overall. We still have some areas that we need to work on. The guys came out after a big win against New Jersey and gave a pretty good effort. I thought their level concentration was good and overall I thought we had some good performances. I thought Damp gave us a huge lift off the bench in the 1st half. We knew we needed to play well against this team on the boards and we won the rebound game. I thought JET [Terry] and Devin ran the ball club like quarterbacks. Josh's numbers looked good, but also his body language looked good. Josh had probably the worst 18 [points] and 9 [rebound] game I've ever seen in New York. I thought our bench gave us a good lift overall. Van Horn was looking pretty good until he went down." Johnson: "The guys came out after a big win with a pretty good effort. They actually made me smile." Johnson on Dampier: "I expected him to rebound really hard and go after block shots and that is what he did tonight. He had 1 block on paper, but he sure did get up and chipped a few balls. 10 rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench, we'll take that every night." Dirk Nowitzki: "I thought offensively we really had everything going. We had 58 points at the half. We were moving the ball well. We were shooting the ball well and once we change side-to-side, we're at our best. I thought we did a great job of always finding the open guys. We penetrated and kicked, so really, I think we got whatever we wanted." Nowitzki: "When we rebound well, we give us a chance to run and really play our game." Nowitzki on the last 2 games: "Fortunately we were able win both of those games rather easily, but it's a long season so once in a while you have to have blowouts and get everybody in, get everybody on the same page, and get everybody some rest. We have one of the longest road trips coming up that I have ever been on since I've been in the league - 11 days with a lot of tough games - so we needed those 2 and we really took care of business at home." Nowitzki: "These last 2 have been against Eastern Conference teams that we were supposed to beat. We don't really want to overrate these wins here. Now we have a tough West Coast road trip coming up where we can show where we are. It should be a fun trip for us." Nowitzki on getting the win before the road trip: "It was important, absolutely. Defensively we were solid all game long. Offensively we really were able to get anything we wanted. We were moving the ball well, we were penetrating, we got open shots, and we're at our best when running and moving the ball like we did tonight. We really executed on offense the whole game." Josh Howard: "I'm always working that jump shot, for the most part. When I see the open lane, I'm going. I'm just trying to stay aggressive the whole game." Howard on what the team needs to work on: "We just need more communication down on the defensive end. Overall the last 2 games, the communication has been pretty good. Hopefully we can continue that on the road." Howard on Nowitzki: "That's a shooter for you, our superstar. He's able to do that night in and night out. We're going to need him to do that for us all season." Howard on Dampier: "With Damp coming in, he's bring a lot more energy. That's what we needed from him. I think that's going to get him his drive back." Jason Terry: "We challenged ourselves to play better, be aggressive and be more assertive on both ends of the floor. We're able to do that now." Erick Dampier: "I just go out there and play. It doesn't matter if I'm starting or coming off the bench." Dampier: "I just went out to rebound and do whatever I can to get my hands on the ball and defend. "I've always been a rebounder and I can block shots. Whenever I get the opportunity, I try to make the most of it." DeSagana Diop on he and Dampier: "If we bring it every night, clog up the middle and block shots, we're going to help the team a lot." Terry Stotts: "We started off the game well. We had good energy and moved the ball well. They wore us down. When Dirk has his jump shot going, he is a tough matchup. You try and cover him, then they put him in some unique situations. When he has the jump shot going, he is a tough cover." Stotts: "Like most teams, we have our ups and downs. We are struggling a little bit right now. We are turning the ball over too much right now. They out-rebounded us and that has been a strength for us. Every team goes through some lulls and we are going through one right now. We have to try and get our rhythm back. I think you do that by working a little bit harder and being more aggressive and playing together, then those things work themselves out." Stotts on the players meeting: "If the players want to meet, I think it's good. I think the strength of any team is when there's communication among the players and they believe in each other and work things out together." Michael Redd: "We couldn't get any stops tonight. Nowitzki had 33 after 3 quarters. That's inexcusable. Everybody's to blame for that. Turnovers and defensive assignments, not adjusting. If you look over our last 8 games, key players had 30 or more points, so we've got to do a better job adjusting on key guys on the opposite team and play better together defensively." Redd on the team meeting: "We were re-evaluating ourselves, that's all. It was a disappointing loss. We beat this team about a month and a half ago, 2 months ago. We played them fairly well through the 1st half of the game and they blew it open in the 2nd half too much." T.J. Ford on the team meeting: "We know it's a tough month. It definitely has been a tough month and we just want to turn things around and understand the importance of this month. It was a basic 'get the understanding' that we have to come out and perform, come out and do the things that it takes to get a win." Andrew Bogut on Nowitzki: "A couple times, I thought I even touched the ball [when he shot it] and it didn't matter."
