Dallas at LA Clippers (January 20) Dallas scored 11 straight points, capped by a 3-pointer by Josh Howard, to go up 18-7 with 6:30 remaining. 6 straight points by the Clippers pulled them within 19-24 with 2:45 to go, but Dallas then closed the quarter with a 13-2 run, capped by a jumper by Jerry Stackhouse at the quarter buzzer, to go up 37-21 after 1. Dallas continued their run by scoring the first 5 points of the 2nd quarter to take their first 20+ point lead at 42-21 with 11 minutes left. The Clippers connected on consecutive buckets to pull within 27-44 with 9 minutes remaining, but that was as close as they got in the quarter and Nowitzki hit a 3-pointer and Devin Harris got a layup and Dallas led in the 20s the rest of the quarter. After a hustle play by Adrian Griffin late in the quarter where Griffin wasn't able to keep the ball from going out of bounds, the home crowd started raining boo's down on their team despite the Clippers retaining possession. Chris Kaman hit a bucket at the quarter buzzer. Dallas led 63-39 at the half. Dallas shot 55% FG in the half (including a poor 4-12 FG from Dirk Nowitzki). The Clippers came out with better effort in the 3rd quarter, but Dallas' lead remained in the 20s most of the first 9 minutes of the quarter (slipped to 19 twice). The Clippers did scored the last 2 buckets of the quarter. Dallas led 81-65 after 3. Sam Cassell had 13 points in the quarter. A bucket by Cuttino Mobley and 3-point play by James Singleton surrounded 2 free throws by Nowitzki to pull the Clippers within 70-83 with 10:30 to go. After almost 2 minutes of neither team scoring, Dallas then took off with a 14-2 run to take a commanding 97-72 lead with 4 minutes remaining. Jason Terry got smacked across the face with no call with 7 minutes left and had some choice words to say to the ref and Terry was quickly tossed (the technical free throws were the Clippers' only points during Dallas' run - the Clippers went 7 minutes between field goals made). The rest was garbage time. Darrell Armstrong was in the game for a handful of seconds before spraining his ankle and heading to the locker room. Dallas won 101-81. Although a little shaky in the 3rd quarter, it was yet another blowout for the Mavs - the 4th straight. The Mavs came out on fire and didn't let up in the 1st half and built a strong enough lead that the Clippers got no closer than 13 points in the 2nd half. Dallas shot near 50% FG at 49.4% (39-79) FG including 6-14 3-pointers. The Clippers shot 45.2% (33-73) FG including 1-4 3-pointers. Dallas shot 17-21 FT and the Clippers shot 14-19 FT. Dallas out-rebounded the Clippers 44-33 including 13-8 offensive. Both teams had 21 assists and 14 turnovers. The Mavs had 6 players in double-digits. Dirk Nowitzki overcame his early shooting struggles and led the way with 26 points. He also had 11 rebounds. Adrian Griffin was very active and had a number of hustle plays. He had 10 points including 4-5 FG and 9 rebounds including 4 offensive. Erick Dampier was active early and had 10 points in the 1st half. He had a double-double (only his 2nd of the season) with 13 points and 12 rebounds. DeSagana Diop again started and had 2 points (1-2 FG), 4 rebounds, and 5 fouls in 17 minutes. Josh Howard had a poor for him outing with 9 points on 4-11 FG and 5 rebounds. Jason Terry struggled with his shot in shooting 4-13 FG and had 10 points and 2 assists before his ejection. Devin Harris and Jerry Stackhouse joined Dampier with nice games off the bench. Harris had 13 points and 5 assists. Stackhouse had 14 points and a game high 6 assists. Keith Van Horn remained out with his sprained ankle. Sam Cassell and Elton Brand led the way for the Clippers. Cassell had 23 points and 4 assists. Brand had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. He also had 4 blocks. Cuttino Mobley was the only other Clipper in double-digits with 10 points, but he only shot 5-14 FG. Chris Kaman had 7 points and 5 rebounds. Quotes Avery Johnson: "We needed to get off to a good start, which we've been doing for the last couple of games. Fortunately we were able to get off to a good start and set a pretty good tempo the rest of the game. They made a run at us in the 3rd quarter - Cassell and Brand played a pretty good 2-man game for a stretch, and we couldn't guard them. Overall I thought our defense was pretty good; we came in knowing we had to win the rebounding battle to have a chance in this game." Johnson: "The ball was really moving. Guys were looking for the extra pass. When we get ball movement and body movement, we'll take it." Johnson: "We had a lot of individual contributions tonight from Griffin with 10 points, 9 rebounds and Dampier with a double-double off the bench. It was a good team win for us. It's always tough to win on the road in the NBA." Johnson on Stackhouse's and Dampier's punch off the bench: "It means a lot. Those are 2 guys who obviously can be starting. Damp's been a starter and Stack's been a starter, so hopefully we can get those guys matched up on some of the other team's 2nd-team players. We like to go to Damp, and we went to him tonight - and he delivered. He's been playing really hard." Dirk Nowitzki: "I felt we did a great job of getting everyone involved. We pushed the ball in transition, and got easy shots and layups. I thought everything went our way. In the 3rd quarter, we stopped moving the ball and they made a run, but we went back to what got us the lead. We knew we had to rebound with them because they were the number 1 rebounding team in the league. We had to protect their glass." Nowitzki: "I thought offensively we had everyone going well. We were moving the ball and driving to the basket and got out in transition." Nowitzki: "The sky is the limit for this team. We have a deep bench, guys that can rebound and defend. I think we have all the ingredients that you need, but we still remember that we weren't on top of our game. This year, we want to keep working and working to get our game on top." Jason Terry: "Our game plan was to come out very aggressive. They are a team that has given us problems in the past. They have out-worked us and out-physicaled us and tonight we wanted to do that to them." Terry on his ejection: "I just lost my cool a little bit. That is something I rarely do. I let it get the better of me but it was definitely a good call on his part, so go ahead and get me out of there." Jerry Stackhouse: "Our focus and tone was defense. Offensively we were moving the ball, getting into transition, and getting the shots we liked. They were at home, we knew that they were going to make a run, but we sustained that run, and made a run of our own." Stackhouse: "I think we put them back on their heels a little. Brand got into a little foul trouble and he is a big part of what they want to do." Stackhouse: "When we move the ball and get good looks, we normally are going to have a high [shooting] percentage because we have good shooters. When we get into playing 1-on-1 and not moving the ball, that's when we get in trouble and [the percentage] goes down." Stackhouse: "I like playing with Dampier. I'm looking for him, and he's looking for me. I think he feels comfortable playing with me. I know what he can do and he gets a few more shots off now than if he was in the starting line-up. It's been working out for us." Stackhouse: "I like playing with Damp. People make a lot about him being out of the starting lineup and coming off the bench, but I think he feels comfortable playing with me because he gets a few more shots maybe than he gets in the starting lineup. So it's been working out well. Hopefully we can continue to get better." Mike Dunleavy: "I was really disappointed in our focus tonight. We did not come out and start this game the way we needed to. A team coming in who is coming in 29-10 should be able to get our attention. We did not do the job from a defensive standpoint or the effort standpoint that I require." Dunleavy: "It just goes to show that in the 3rd quarter, when we got after it defensively, doing the things that we were supposed to do, the results we had. But when you dig yourself a big hole like that, it's hard to come all the way back against a really good team." Dunleavy: "It's hard to come back against a really good team when you dig a deep hole. We have to get our mindset. We have to quit feeling sorry for ourselves with guys being out with injuries and treat it as an opportunity to show the coach I'm going to work my butt off." Dunleavy: "We had a pretty good response in the 3rd quarter and we came out and we played extremely hard. We had a good result. We had a few bad breaks go against us as far as a guy shoots the ball from the corner and banks it in and a couple other calls that could have been blocks and they were fouls and there goes your momentum and run. At least the momentum part was there." Dunleavy on Dallas having 6 3-point plays in 1st half: "How soft are we that they have 6 and-1s at the half? What does that tell you about your mindset? I don't like the way we are playing. It is just too soft." Elton Brand: "We got down big in the 1st quarter - you can't have that. You have to play with some pride and some intensity. We came out and played hard in the 3rd quarter, but you have to play from the start of the game like that. You can't get down that big in the 1st quarter and expect to play like that." Brand: "We just have to play with intensity all around the court. You need to play and play hard with a sense of urgency." Brand: "They played really well, shared the ball and played defense. But I don't think they should have punished us like that. Definitely not. The last game, Cat [Mobley] was out with foul trouble, and tonight I had to come out early in foul trouble. But we don't have any excuses. Guys need to step up and play with a sense of pride." Sam Cassell: "We have got to play with a swagger. We needed to play harder tonight. We competed in the 3rd quarter, and you can see what happened. But the thing about this team is that we move on in positive ways." Cassell: "They made layup after layup, 3-point play after 3-point play. It's frustrating, but we'll figure it out, we have to." Cassell on the last 2 games: "They're 2 of the top teams in the Western Conference. We are a young club though that's trying to make strides - not the ones we made tonight though. We'll take it as a learning experience and move on." Dallas jumped out to a 6-0 lead with 9:40 remaining as Portland did not get on the board until 3 1/2 minutes into the game. But once the Blazers got on the board, they were able to keep the game close and Dallas' lead remained in single-digits. Consecutive layups gave Dallas their largest lead at 22-13 with 20 seconds to go. Theo Ratliff got a dunk near the quarter's end. Dallas led 22-15 after 1. Dallas' lead remained in single-digits in the 2nd quarter as they were unable to put any distance between them and Portland. Dallas led 31-23 with 6:15 to go and Portland went on an 11-3 run to tie the game at 34-34 with 2:50 left. Dallas then scored the next 4 points, but Portland closed the quarter with a 7-1 run to go up 41-39 at the half. Zach Randolph had 11 points in the 2nd quarter. The teams traded leads throughout the 3rd quarter with the largest lead being just 3 points until the final basket. Portland led 58-55 with 3:45 remaining and Dallas closed the quarter with a 10-2 run to go up 65-60 after 3. There were 6 ties and 8 lead changes in the 3rd quarter. It was an ugly opening to the 4th quarter as only a bucket by Theo Ratliff was scored in the first 2:15. Dallas then went on a 9-2 run to go up 74-64 with 6:30 left. A 3-point play by Dirk Nowitzki gave Dallas a 77-68 lead with 4:20 remaining. It then became the Steve Blake show as he single-handedly brought Portland back in to the game. Blake got a layup and 3-pointer as Dallas hit a drought. After 2 scoreless minutes by both teams, Blake hit another 3-pointer to pull Portland within 76-77 with 45 seconds remaining. Dallas ran the clock down and Nowitzki missed, but DeSagana Diop worked for the rebound and got the ball to Jason Terry and he was intentionally fouled with 14 seconds left. Terry hit both free throws to give Dallas a 3 point lead. After a timeout, Blake missed badly on a 3-point attempt, but the rebound bounced long and glanced off a couple of players and the ball ended up back in Blake's hands and this time he drained the 3-pointer to tie the game with 3 seconds left. After a Dallas timeout, Terry drove and his runner missed at the buzzer. The game was tied at 79-79 heading in to overtime. Dallas missed their last 8 shots of the 4th quarter in going almost 4 1/2 minutes without a field goal. Blake opened the overtime with a jumper. Both teams traded bricks (including Portland missing 2 free throws) and Nowitzki finally got Dallas on the scoreboard in overtime with a layup with 3 minutes to go. After Juan Dixon missed, Jerry Stackhouse converted a 3-point play, but Blake hit another 3-pointer to tie the game at 84-84 with 2 minutes left. Devin Harris drove aggressively for a layup and Randolph got a putback layup with 1:20 remaining. Stackhouse missed and Portland called timeout. Harris anticipated the inbounds pass for Blake and intercepted it and took it all the way for the layup and was fouled hard. He hit the free throw to give Dallas a 89-86 lead with 40 seconds left. Portland took another timeout and got the ball inbounded this time, but Blake missed on a quick layup attempt with 35 seconds remaining. For some reason Portland gave an intentional foul and Harris hit 2 free throws to give Dallas a 5 point lead with 28 seconds left. Blake missed again and Nowitzki was sent to the line and he hit both free throws. Dixon did hit a 3-pointer with 12 seconds to go, but Portland would not score again. Dallas won 95-89 in overtime. It wasn't as easy of a win as most would have thought this one would be (despite Portland's recent good play), but the Mavs managed to pull out the win. I was worried that Dallas' early many missed free throws would come back to haunt them, and they did as the game would not have gone into overtime if Dallas had shot a reasonable percentage in the 1st half. But Portland's missed free throws actually hurt them more, even though they only missed 3, as 2 came in overtime. The Mavs did benefit from getting to the line more than Portland in shooting 24-33 FT while Portland shot 13-16 FT. Neither team was that good in shooting from the floor as both shot near 40% FG. Dallas shot 40.2% (33-82) FG including 5-13 3-pointers and Portland shot 40.7% (35-86) FG including 6-14 3-pointers. Portland out-rebounded Dallas 51-45 including 18-15 offensive. It was the 5th straight win for Dallas. Jerry Stackhouse came alive and was an offensive force. He had a game high 29 points including 11-18 FG. Devin Harris had some key plays in overtime, where he scored 8 of his 15 points. Dirk Nowitzki didn't shoot that well (8-20 FG), but managed to score 23 points. He also had 5 rebounds. Adrian Griffin was again active. Griff had 1 point, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals. Jason Terry had a poor outing with 11 points including 4-14 FG and 1-6 3-pointers and 2 assists. Josh Howard had 13 points, 7 rebounds, and a team high 4 assists. The centers couldn't hit a shot, but could rebound. DeSagana Diop missed 2 field goals and had 7 rebounds including 4 offensive. Erick Dampier missed 4 shots and had 10 rebounds in 33 minutes off the bench. It was a short rotation as only 8 Mavs played. Keith Van Horn dressed, but was only available in an emergency due to his sprained left ankle. Portland had 3 players with 20+ points, but the next highest scorer only had 6 points. Zach Randolph had a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds. He also had 5 assists. All but 4 of Steve Blake's 20 points came in the last 9 minutes of the game. He shot 4-7 3-pointers. Juan Dixon had 20 points. Viktor Khryapa started and had 10 rebounds including 5 offensive before fouling out with 30 seconds left in overtime. Joel Przybilla and Theo Ratliff each had 7 rebounds. Jarrett Jack did not play in the 2nd half due to a sore left ankle. Quotes Avery Johnson: Tonight I thought this was a gutsy win for us. We played some pretty good ball in the 1st half, but just couldn't put it together in the 2nd half. We couldn't score - give their defense some credit." Johnson: "It was a gutsy win for us tonight. That's a scrappy team over there. They've been playing some very good basketball and we don't take anything for granted. [Stackhouse] stepped up tonight and I thought Devin really came on and gave us a big lift in overtime." Johnson: "I thought Dirk's defense on Randolph was probably as good as I've seen him take that defensive challenge this year. I wanted to really see how he'd play because this wasn't a night when his shot was on. It wasn't a night when he could really get to the free throw line. It was a night where I thought his defense was good along with our centers. Jason Terry on Harris' steal with 42 seconds left in overtime: "We knew they were going to [Blake], it was just a gutsy, smarty play to overplay the passing lane knowing they were trying to get it to him. He made a great defensive play and then he converted the play, that was outstanding. They've been playing well; they're young, they are energetic. They have a great coach in Nate McMillan and they're going to be good." Jerry Stackhouse: "They've been playing well - they've won 4 in a row at home. They have a lot of youth, a lot of talent to. Those guys they've won big games - Juan and Steve played in a national championship game and won a championship. Their confidence won't shake even in late game situations. We had resolve to stay in the game even though they made a big 3. We made plays in overtime and got a huge win. This would have been a real tough loss to leave with tonight." Stackhouse on Harris' steal: "That was the play of the game, I think. Being able to have the confidence to go for that steal, first of all, and to have the focus and concentration to finish the play and make his free throw. Big play." Stackhouse: "Obviously Dirk's going to be featured most of the nights, but he's not going to have it every night, so we've got other guys that can do the job." Stackhouse: "This is starting to become who we are. We feel that we are going to win these games and have the wherewithal to sustain anything any team throws at us." Stackhouse on being tied with San Antonio for 1st in the Southwest Division: "Just to get to this point, we knew it would be tough. Every time we got to this point, they may lose a game, then we lose. I think for us now to get even, hopefully we can kind of propel ourselves in front of them if possible." Devin Harris: "We just wanted to contain them and try to take away what they want to do. I saw an opportunity where Ratliff had the ball and he was trying to get the ball back to Blake, I read it and I just acted on it." Harris on his steal: "He threw the pass without looking and I figured he was going to throw it. I timed it pretty well and got a piece of it and was able to finish it at the other end." Harris on his steal: "I just timed it pretty well and got a piece of it. Once you get an idea of what guys are going to do, you try to act on it and hope it works out." Adrian Griffin on Portland: "They've been playing some good basketball. In the past they might have mailed it in, but thats what winning will do. They competed to the end." Nate McMillan: "We weren't sharp with our execution. We settled too much for perimeter shots. They were taking the passing lanes away all night and I thought we really didn't work at taking advantage of that - being careful with our passes, coming to the ball, and looking for the back door." McMillan: "Defensively though I was pleased. We talked about being more physical. We were aggressive and made them work for the most part. We had a few problems getting rebounds and lost some critical offensive boards. In the overtime, if we get the rebound of the missed shot with the score tied, we have a chance to win it. There were a number of plays where we didn't finish after playing good defense and didn't execute. But it wasn't just 1 play like Devin Harris's steal and bucket. We played hard but just wasn't as sharp as we needed to be to beat a team as good as Dallas." McMillan: "I thought we played hard, we gave ourselves a chance, but that's a very good team. Good teams like that, when you make a mistake, they convert those, and they did tonight." McMillan: "We talked about being more physical and challenging the pass and getting up and getting into the ball and just working hard on the defensive end of the floor, and I thought we did that." McMillan: "I thought Steve Blake made some big shots when we needed to make those shots. If you're open, I've told our players to take the shot, shoot the ball. When you're open you shouldn't hesitate because it throws you off your rhythm." McMillan: "Jerry Stackhouse is a tough matchup for us. He can beat you off the dribble and he's good on the perimeter. Steve Blake: "The main thing is we wanted to win. It didn't happen. We had some tough breaks. Blake on getting his shots: "Zach was getting double-teamed in the post and he was kicking it out to me and I was able to get some open looks and knock them down." Blake on defense: "A lot of guys did good individually. Theo did a good job. Zach did a good job. But we turned the ball over too many times. We've got some things to work on." Blake on if the team would have folded early in the season after playing poorly in the 1st quarter: "Probably. Early in the season, we weren't playing as good a defense as we are now. Defense is what kept us in the game." Juan Dixon: "We talked about that, how we missed out on 3 or 4 loose balls, and I thought myself or a couple of my teammates could have got on the floor for those balls. I thought that was huge." Dixon on the loss: "It hurts because we could easily have had a 5 game win streak if we executed down the stretch." Ruben Patterson: "You know I just thank God I can get up and play basketball. You get paid a lot of money to play this game. You got to love basketball. People would love to be in our shoes right now. I just trying not to complain and get a win. There were a lot of times we could have gotten the ball. They out-worked us on rebounds, their 2nd shots killed us. Just a lot of bad things. It's over now." Theo Ratliff on the inbounds pass that Harris stole: "It was just a bad read by myself. I shouldn't have thrown the ball out there for him to get it. I should have took my time, but I rushed it and he made a play on it."
