Dallas at Charlotte (November 11) Dallas was happy that both Dirk Nowitzki and Devin Harris were able to play and neither was hampered by their injuries from Wednesday's game. Dallas held small leads early in the game. A jumper by Kareem Rush tied the game at 16-16 with 5:45 to go. Dallas then scored the next 8 points to take the largest lead of the quarter at 24-16 with 2:30 left. A 3-pointer by Rush ended the run. Dallas led 27-22 after 1. Charlotte scored 6 straight points to pull within 33-34 with 7:40 remaining, but Dallas then went on a 12-2 run to go up 46-35 with 2:30 left. Dallas led 47-39 at the half. Dallas shot 47.5% FG and 6-8 FT and Charlotte shot 39% FG and 13-21 FT. Dirk Nowitzki had a double-double in the half with 13 points and 10 rebounds. A 3-pointer by Jason Terry opened the 3rd quarter. A 3-point play by Emeka Okafor pulled Charlotte within 49-57 with 6:40 to go, but Dallas then scored the next 6 points and the Mavs led in the teens the rest of the quarter. Dallas scored the last 4 points of the quarter to lead 81-62 after 3. Dallas out-scored Charlotte 34-23 in the 3rd quarter. Devin Harris again went nuts in a quarter and had 14 points in the 3rd. A 3-pointer by Keith Van Horn gave Dallas their largest lead at 85-64 with 9:20 remaining. Charlotte was able to nibble away at Dallas' lead and got within 77-90 with 3:50 to go. But they were unable to cut Dallas' lead into single-digits until less than 20 seconds remained in the game. Dallas won 98-88. It wasn't the prettiest of games with all the whistles blown. In fact, it was down right tedious at times with the many stoppages of play. Dallas was called for 35 fouls and Charlotte 28 fouls (despite all the fouls called, no one fouled out - there were 6 players with 5 fouls by the final buzzer). That meant a lot of free throws, which was good for the Bobcats as they never found a shooting touch. Dallas shot 25-30 FT and Charlotte shot 38-52 (yes, 52) FT. But Dallas hit 10 more field goals to get the win. Dallas shot 45.3% (34-75) FG including 5-13 3-pointers and Charlotte shot 35.8% (24-67) FG including 2-9 3-pointers. Dallas out-rebounded Charlotte 45-36 and both teams had 10 offensive rebounds. Charlotte had a really low assist number with just 12 assists while Dallas had 19 assists. Both teams were fairly clean with the ball as Dallas had 16 turnovers and Charlotte had 12 turnovers. Dirk Nowitzki led the way for Dallas with a solid double-double of 23 points and 16 rebounds. The one quarter wonder of Devin Harris appeared again and he finished with 21 points (14 in the 4th quarter) on 7-10 FG and 7-9 FT. He did have 6 turnovers, though. Keith Van Horn had another good offensive outing off the bench with 16 points. He only had 2 rebounds and no assists. Josh Howard didn't have a great outing with just 12 points including 4-10 FG and 6 rebounds. Jason Terry had 8 points on 3-10 FG and 2-4 3-pointers, 3 assists, and 5 fouls. Erick Dampier had 4 points on 2-6 FG, 7 rebounds including 4 offensive, and 5 fouls in 20 minutes. DeSagana Diop had 6 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 4 fouls in 25 minutes. Marquis Daniels had 4 points and 5 fouls in 24 minutes. Doug Christie didn't have much with 4 points, 1 rebound, and 2 assists in 20 minutes. Darrell Armstrong played 5 minutes and had 2 assists and 1 steal. Charlotte was without Gerald Wallace (chipped bone in wright) and Jumaine Jones (wife in labor) as both were placed on IL prior to the game. It was a spread the wealth type of game for the Bobcats as 10 players played more than 15 minutes and no Bobcat scored more than 14 points. Melvin Ely was the Bobcat with 14 points including 8-10 FT. Kareem Rush enjoyed his return to action with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Emeka Okafor, Brevin Knight, Keith Bogans, and Raymond Felton threw up bricks. Okafor had 11 points on 4-12 FG and 3-7 FT and 5 rebounds. Knight had 7 points on 1-7 FG and 5-6 FT, 5 assists, and 5 steals. Bogans had 9 points on 1-6 FG and 7-8 FT. And Felton had 5 points on 2-10 FG. Rookie Sean May chipped in 10 points and 5 rebounds. Quotes Avery Johnson: "Tonight obviously we're happy we won the game, but again I've been saying we've been working all along. We are a work in progress. We are still not there defensively, but again the guys competed. They competed hard." Johnson: "For some reason or another, they shot 52 free throws. So I'm going to have to come up with some drills that help our players to stop fouling so much." Johnson: "I like using Dirk at 3 some, but they had 3 power forwards at one time. It was a way to give Josh a blow, play Dirk, but he played pretty good and he looked okay." Johnson on Nowitzki: "I didn't want him to play 40 [minutes]. But he felt pretty good and he looked okay out there tonight." Johnson: "I thought Devin Harris did a nice job in the 2nd half, by being aggressive and playing the way the coach wants him to play. I thought we battled and they obviously made a run. We were up by 21 at one time, and the Bobcats kept fighting, and thats the way Bernie Bickerstaff's teams are. They definitely don't quit." Dirk Nowitzki: "We can't be satisfied with that win. We're not playing that great yet. This wasn't a great effort on our part." Nowitzki on his back: "It felt great. I got loose really good in warmups, was feeling well and told Avery I wanted to play tonight and that was that." Nowitzki: "The back felt a lot better than I thought it would. It's a little stiff now. But I'll ice it on the flight and see how it feels." Josh Howard on how Dallas controlled the game: "Just playing off of the elbows, executing our plays all the way until the end, and playing great defense." Howard on defense: "We played good until late in the 4th quarter, when we started fouling a lot. It's something that coach didn't really want us to do, but other than that, I think we did a good job." Howard: "We just ran through our offense, finished our plays, got shots around the basket and fed the ball to Dirk and Damp, those guys down low, and got points in the paint." Howard: "I had a lot of family and friends here. I got about 54 tickets. It was great to come back here. I don't get to come back that much, so I spend as much time as I can here during the summer. I miss the weather, the trees, and all the other things I don't get to see anymore. I love the city [Dallas] and fans down there, but there's no place like home." Keith Van Horn on Nowitzki: "He really did a great job for us on the boards especially with his back. We really focused on finishing off defensive possessions with rebounds. When he's on the court he's going to make things happen." Devin Harris on offense: "We knew what we could get, how they play the pick-and-rolls. We wanted to get in the lane and start from inside, and work our way out. We kept getting good drives to the basket and got to the free throw line." Harris: "They usually play people tough here. We didn't want to be in a situation where we had to come from behind. We wanted to get out early and sustain the lead and keep it going." Harris: "I got some layups early, got to the free throw line and that opened up my outside game. I hit a couple of pull-up jump shots, but for the most part, I tried to penetrate and make something happen in the lane." Harris: "We had a great effort last game but we definitely wanted to get this one, and do it in a convincing fashion. This win kind of got us back on track, and now we just have to get ready for the game tomorrow." Harris: "It seems like I respond after having a bad 1st half. I just went out there attacked the basket and got some good looks. I just didn't think and went out there and played some basketball." Harris on Nowitzki: "He's a warrior. He's going to play through injuries all year long. His back was hurting him pretty good, but he still came out and gave the effort tonight. That just shows what kind of player he is." Bernie Bickerstaff: "I can't put my finger on it but we were lethargic. I thought Bogans tried to lift us in terms of giving us some energy, but we had none. I don't know whether we are coming into the building ready to perform. I'm concerned about our conditioning." Bickerstaff: "In this league, you have to bring it every night. This team could be 3-0 or 4-0 but you have to go back and regroup and understand that nothing's been done. When you've been around a long time you kind of sense those things. You have to take those extra steps of preparation. This basketball team was successful, if you can call it that, as an expansion team because we took nothing for granted. We were playing some pretty good basketball teams." Bickerstaff: "We just need to do some more up-and-down and game-like situations, getting up and down the court, running, jumping changing directions, those kind of things. I do have to agree, I'm being hard on them. Theres been a lot of basketball games played against pretty good basketball teams." Bickerstaff on winning 2 games: "I don't know whether we're capable of handling it. That's what's running through my mind. A lot of good things have happened to these guys collectively. You go on the road, you play well, you come back into a new building, fans are embracing you, your surroundings are good, you have chefs preparing your food. But those things have to be earned. It has to be appreciated. We could get hung up in the moment and, as you know, if you've been around me, there's no panic. We just have to find a way to get out of it. What's important here is where you find out is where your carriers are and who is going to step up." Bickerstaff on Rush: "He played better tonight. He shot the ball much better. His legs are not there. I think that's a lot of the problems with Voskuhl. You just can't sit out on this level and come back in because of the pace of the game and the pounding, it's difficult. I'm reasonable when you get right down to it." Bickerstaff on Felton and May: "I think it's just a learning process. Again, what's happening, and I talked to them about it, is there's a 2 or 3 second difference between the college level and this level. If you watch the games out there we are a couple of seconds behind. We didn't expect him to play tonight with back spasms. With Sean, he lost his conditioning when he had knee surgery. When he came into camp he was ready, before the surgery." Brevin Knight: "It's the grind of the NBA. You've got to be ready to play - there's a lot of games. You just have to bring it. ... We've got to come back and get our trademark back, get our stamp. Our stamp is playing tough defensively and then we make it happen from there. We're just not doing that right now." Melvin Ely: "Tonight was another off night. We're ashamed to come out on the floor like that. We let ourselves down and our fans down. We're a better team than what we showed. We just have to find a way to win." Ely on bouncing back with a back-to-back: "You just have to in this league. We've got a great team in Miami tomorrow and right after that we've got Orlando. We're going to go into the Miami game tomorrow and give it our all and try to get 2 wins on this road trip." Ely on Nowitzki: "Great players do that. He's one of the best power forwards in this league. Him being hurt is nothing. Great players ignore pain; they do what needs to be done for their team to win." Kareem Rush: "It's tough to always come back, especially against a good team. That 1st group has got to go out there and set the tone and try to get a lead or at least be even after the 1st quarter. We've been getting some big deficits in the 1st quarter and thats tough on the 2nd group." Rush on Nowitzki: "He's an incredible shooter. And being that tall he can shoot it over everybody. He's a tremendous player on a great team and he came out and played well tonight." Dallas has played pre-season games in Oklahoma before, but this was the first visit to Oklahoma City. The teams traded small leads early on. Josh Howard collected 3 fouls in the first 4 minutes of the game and sat for the rest of the half. Dallas scored 8 straight points to go up 17-12 with 5:30 to go and held a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter. Dallas led 29-25 after 1. Dallas continued to hold a single-digit lead in the 2nd quarter, none larger than 8 points. 2 free throws by J.R. Smith pulled New Orleans within 49-50 with a minute left, but Jason Terry answered with a 3-pointer. Another free throw by Smith capped the quarter scoring. Dallas led 50-53 at the half. Dallas shot 57% FG and New Orleans shot 51.4% FG for the half [not much defense being played by either team]. Chris Paul opened the 3rd quarter with a 3-pointer to tie the game. The teams traded leads a couple of times and the game was tied at 58-58 with 9:40 remaining. Dallas then went on an 13-2 run, with 9 points from Dirk Nowitzki, to go up 71-60 with 5:10 left. New Orleans chipped away at Dallas' lead and Paul hit consecutive buckets as the quarter neared an end. But Terry drained a 3-pointer at the quarter buzzer to give Dallas an 87-74 lead after 3. Nowitzki had 12 points in the 3rd quarter. Dallas scored the first 6 points of the 4th quarter to take their first double-digit lead at 85-72 with 10:35 to go. A 3-pointer by Nowitzki put the Mavs up 92-78 with 7:35 left. But Dallas lacked the killer instinct and didn't put the Hornets away as New Orleans then went on a 10-2 run to pull within 88-94 with 4:40 remaining and instead of an easy win, it was going to be a tight finish. A jumper by Terry put Dallas up 100-91 with 2:35 left. The teams traded buckets, David West got a layup, and Paul hit 1-2 FT to pull New Orleans within 96-102 with 1:15 left. Nowitzki missed a jumper, but Terry got the rebound with 50 seconds to go and Dallas ran some time off the clock. Terry got a layup with 31 seconds left. New Orleans used a timeout and then Paul got a quick layup with only 4 seconds going off the clock and he was fouled. He hit the extra to pull New Orleans within 99-104 with 27 seconds remaining. Nowitzki hit 2 free throws and Speedy Claxton got a quick layup with 14 seconds left. Devin Harris hit 1-2 FT and Claxton got another quick layup to make it a 4 point game. But Terry hit 2 free throws and it was a 2 possession game with 4 seconds left and New Orleans used their last timeout. Paul missed at the buzzer and that was game. Dallas won 109-103. Again, it wasn't pretty, but it goes down as a W and that's all that counts. I'd be much happier if Dallas would simply put a team away once they get up big in the 4th quarter instead of continually having slumps (both offensively and defensively) that allow the opponent some hope. Dallas' winning streak against the Hornets is now at 14 straight (spanning the team's home cities of Charlotte, New Orleans, and now Oklahoma City). Neither team played good defense and both teams shot over 50% FG. Dallas shot 51.4% (38-74) FG including 8-19 3-pointers. New Orleans shot 55.7% (39-70) FG including 4-11 3-pointers. Dallas shot 25-30 FT and New Orleans shot 21-25 FT. With the high shooting percentage, there were not a lot of rebounds and New Orleans held a 36-29 rebounding edge, though Dallas out-rebounded them 10-8 offensive. Both teams were fairly clean with the ball with Dallas having 11 turnovers and New Orleans having 16 turnovers. Dallas didn't have a block in the game. After playing 5 of their first 6 games on the road (including 2 sets of road back-to-backs), Dallas now has a 4 game home stand. Dirk Nowitzki was a stud and had the shot going. He had 30 points including 5-9 3-pointers and 4 rebounds (no Mavs had more than 5 rebounds). When Nowitzki wasn't scoring, Jason Terry was. Terry had 26 points including 10-16 FG. He also had 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals. Keith Van Horn had 15 points and 4 rebounds. In a rarity, Josh Howard was a non-factor in this game. He had a bunch of 2s with 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 turnovers in just 16 minutes. Marquis Daniels filled in nicely for Howard with 12 points and 4 rebounds - all offensive. Erick Dampier had 8 points including 3-4 FG, 4 rebounds, and 5 fouls in 21 minutes. DeSagana Diop had 4 points on 2-3 FG and a team high 5 rebounds. Devin Harris had 9 points, 5 assists, and no turnovers. Doug Christie had 3 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist in 31 minutes. Darrell Armstrong played 5 minutes and 2 assists were his only stats. New Orleans had a strong showing from their point guards, whom Dallas was unable to slow down the entire game. Rookie Chris Paul had a career high 26 points including 10-14 FG and 5 assists. He also had 5 turnovers. Speedy Claxton came off the bench and had 17 points and 7 assists. Both were on the court at the same time some. 10 of J.R. Smith's 14 points came in the 1st half. He also had 5 rebounds and sprained his ankle with a little over a minute left in the game (he stayed in the game, but was visibly limping). David West had 15 points including 7-8 FG, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Bostjan Nachbar had 10 points and 4 rebounds. Desmond Mason came off the bench for 8 points including a couple of highlight dunks. Quotes Avery Johnson: "We gutted one out tonight, and the team showed me a lot. Paul had a spectacular game, but we held on. We got out-hustled tonight, but when we needed to make plays tonight, we did." Johnson: "They zoned us a lot tonight. We really haven't seen a zone like that consistently. But when we needed to make plays on it, we did." Johnson on Nowitzki: "We just need to get him some rest now. He hit big shots when we needed it. I thought there were some shots where he could have taken the ball to the basket, but it's a work in progress." Johnson on the Hornets: "That was a basketball team that we played tonight that's playing well early in the season, playing well at home in front of one of the better crowds I've seen on the road the last couple years." Dirk Nowitzki: "Over the last 7 or 8 years we've really been a jump shooting team, but tonight we really mixed it up." Nowitzki: "I had a good rhythm early on and that usually gets my confidence going." Nowitzki: "It was kind of tough when we started this trip with a loss. But it's not easy winning on the road. We got this back-to-back, and now we get a nice little stretch at home." Nowitzki on the Hornets: "They're right around the corner. They're crowd was great. Actually, I saw a lot of Dallas jerseys. That's awesome. Hopefully, they'll get a team in the long run." Jason Terry: "I thought we executed well on offense tonight. We got Dirk on mismatches with a smaller and the key for us tonight was attacking those mismatches." Terry: "We have a lot of offensive weapons on this team, from the starting lineup to the bench. They played a lot of zone against us. We found the holes and I was able to hit some shots." Keith Van Horn: "I'm a big believer that winning is the bottom line. But to beat the good teams - and I think Oklahoma City is going to be a good team - we need to do a better job on the boards and we need to do a better job defensively." Doug Christie: "I don't think we want to pat ourselves on the back too much yet. It's good to win on the road. But you don't want to go home and flop." Byron Scott: "We still have to learn and I still have to coach. We don't give up. We played a team that will be in the top there in the conference and we played them tooth and nail all the way to the end." Scott: "You have to go through some pain before you can understand what this all about and be able to win close games like this. Especially at home and especially against great teams. It's just all a learning experience for all our guys right now." Scott: "You have to go through some pain to know what this is all about and be able to win close games like this at home. Especially at home against great teams, and the Mavs have one of the better teams. They have a superstar in Nowitzki, who can make shots from anywhere, but its a learning experience for all of our guys right now." Scott on Terry's 3-pointer to end the 3rd quarter: "That hurt. I thought we'd have a little bit of momentum going into the 4th quarter if he doesn't make that shot." Speedy Claxton: "It's very discouraging. We have a very young team and we're going to have to take our bumps and bruises and just hopefully learn from game to game." P.J. Brown: "Defensively, that's the most discouraging thing. We needed stops. That's a team that's going to let you score a lot of points. And they're going to let you do your thing. But you need to go on the other end and stop them. I think it was just lack of experience. Me, I know Nowitzki. I know Van Horn. I know Dampier. A lot of these younger guys haven't been in this situation much. They're a different team. They're not a post-up team. They're more a finesse team that shoots a lot of Js. Hopefully you learn a little from this so next time, our young guys have a better feel for it." Chris Paul on what it will take to win: "Defense. That's our biggest problem right now, we realize that. We understand that the only way we can start winning games is if we start defending teams." Paul: "They hit some big shots, Jason Terry and Dirk. Whenever they needed a basket, they just found a way, whether the shot clock was running down or they had a hand in their face, they just made a shot. That shot Terry hit [at the end of the 3rd] was huge. We were fighting back from 7 the whole 4th quarter." David West: "We can learn from these things if we keep working, but we want to come out with a win."
