Doug Christie was placed on IL. Christie returned to Seattle, where he had surgery on his left ankle, to get a 2nd opinion on why the ankle was still bothering him. Van Horn had missed the Denver game with a sprained middle finger. He played in the Atlanta game, but aggravated the finger during the game and missed the Detroit game with the injury. Atlanta at Dallas (November 17) Atlanta jumped out to any early 10-4 lead with 4:40 left as it was ugly ball by both teams, including a 3 1/2 minute period where neither team scored. Dallas then scored the next 7 points to take the lead with 3 minutes to go, but wouldn't score again and Atlanta scored the last 6 points of the quarter to go up 16-11 after 1. Dallas shot a mere 5-20 FG and Atlanta shot 7-18 FG and each team had 7 turnovers. Josh Howard was the only Mav to show up in the 1st quarter as he had 9 points on 4-5 FG - yup, the rest of the Mavs shot 1-15 FG in the quarter. Atlanta scored the first 4 points of the 2nd quarter to take their largest lead at 20-11 with 11:15 remaining. Dallas then scored the next 9 points to tie the game at 20-20 with 8:15 to go. The teams traded leads a few times over the next 6 minutes. Dallas closed the quarter with a 10-2 run to go up 40-33 at the half. Dallas shot 54% FG and Atlanta shot 35% FG in the 2nd quarter as Dallas out-scored Atlanta 29-17. Atlanta pulled within 39-42 with 9:50 remaining and Dallas then went on a 12-4 run to take their largest lead at 54-43 with 6:30 to go. Atlanta scored the next 7 points and Dallas held a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter. Atlanta got to the line a lot in the 3rd quarter and shot 10-14 FT while Dallas shot 3-4 FT. The 4th quarter found Dallas still hanging on to a single-digit lead as Atlanta could get no closer than 4 points over the first 9 minutes of the quarter. A 3-point play by Joe Johnson pulled the Hawks within 77-81 with 2:15 to go. Marquis Daniels hit 2 free throws with 1:35 left and Zaza Pachulia hit 1-2 FT with 1:20 remaining. Jason Terry was fouled with a little over a minute to go and he hit both free throws to put Dallas up 85-78. After an Atlanta timeout, Salim Stoudamire was called for traveling. Terry missed, but Dirk Nowitzki got the tip in with 45 seconds left. The teams traded misses and that was game. Dallas won 87-78. Like the Denver game, that was ugly. Dallas never had the killer instinct to put Atlanta away, but fortunately the Hawks are such a young team that they never found a way to take full advantage of what Dallas was giving them. Both teams shot under 40% FG and both only had 14 assists. Dallas shot 39.5% (32-81) FG including 3-10 3-pointers. Atlanta shot 38.2% (29-76) FG including 1-9 3-pointers. Dallas shot 20-23 FT and Atlanta shot 19-28. Dallas had a slight edge on the boards in out-rebounding Atlanta 46-43 including 16-15 offensive. Thank goodness for Josh Howard. Coming off 2 straight poor outings, he had a fine game this night with a game high 25 points including 10-13 FG, 4 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Dirk Nowitzki had a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Marquis Daniels started in Doug Christie's absence and Daniels had 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Jason Terry again struggled with his shot but kept firing. He had 12 points including 4-17 FG, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists. Erick Dampier had another miserable outing, though this time he at least grabbed 8 rebounds. He missed the 2 shots he attempted and was charged with 6 turnovers [note that offensive 3 second violations count as turnovers and are not always his fault as players pass up open looks] before fouling out in 20 minutes. Keith Van Horn had 14 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. DeSagana Diop had 7 rebounds. Devin Harris had 3 points on 0-6 FG and 3-4 3-pointers, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. With the injuries and tight game, it was a short 8-man rotation. Zaza Pachulia had a real nice outing with 21 points including 7-11 FT and 12 rebounds including 6 offensive. Joe Johnson and Al Harrington supplied their veteran prescence. Johnson had 18 points. Harrington had 15 points and 10 rebounds. No other Hawk was in double-digits. Josh Childress had 2 points on 1-4 FG and 5 rebounds and Josh Smith had 6 points including 1-6 FG and 5 rebounds. Quotes Avery Johnson: "Tonight we got off to a bad start. We scored 11 points in the 1st quarter and couldn't get anything going. We had about 8 [actually 7] turnovers in the 1st quarter, offensive fouls. We got it together in the 2nd and scored a little bit more. We shot 39% from the field, our point guards shot 4-23 between them and we were still fortunate to win the game." Johnson: "I liked the way our centers rebounded the game. I was really proud of the way Josh had 5 blocked shots and I am really proud that the German had 4 offensive rebounds." Johnson: "Any time a team scores 78 points you have to be happy, but we are still searching for more. We had a new starter in the lineup tonight with Marquis. Well get better and keep working hard and well go from there." Johnson on Howard: "I think tonight his defense took pressure off of his offense. He had some big blocked shots that I had been wanting and asking him for. He was really active tonight. We would like to see this same frame of mind." Johnson on Stackhouse: "Sometimes we have progress there and sometimes we have minor setbacks. I think we are getting closer. We will just have to wait and see, but we are looking forward to getting him back." Dirk Nowitzki: "It was a weird game for us. We never got going. It was an ugly basketball game but at the end we made the right plays to win the game." Nowitzki: "We're making it hard on ourselves. We've got to learn how to jump on people early and kind of establish ourselves early. We've got to change some stuff around because we all know we are a long way from what we are trying to do and what we are trying to accomplish." Nowitzki on Howard: "Josh got going early and he was aggressive." Nowitzki: "We've got to learn how to jump on people earlier and establish ourselves. We're just coasting early on. They were up a couple of points, and their confidence goes up and, next thing you know, they're in the ball game." Josh Howard: "We had a bad shooting night. We really had to fight those guys off. What helped us out was we finished strong at the end of quarters." Howard on the slow start: "Sometimes we start out like that, but we picked it up. As long as we get that win, that is all that counts. Whatever happened, we will look at film tomorrow, coach will correct it and then we have to get ready for the Pistons." Howard: "We came out slow. We got shots. They just weren't going in. There are going to be games like that. We've just got to keep fighting through it like we did tonight." Howard on his game: "I felt pretty good coming out. I had a couple bad games, the last 2 games, I would say. I just wanted to get that out of the way and just be ready because I knew my team was going to need me." Howard on being aggressive early: "Thats what I did and my teammates helped me a lot. They kept pumping me and getting me the ball and I kept finishing." Howard: "It was kind of my coming out party as far as being in a slump. As for missing shots, I've had 2 games like that. It's early in the season. I think we'll be all right." Keith Van Horn on his finger: "I hit it a couple of times and it did bother me some. The game isn't all about shooting the ball. If you run, play hard and rebound, good things happen and you know you're productive." Marquis Daniels: "A win is a win. This is the NBA and everybody has good players. There is no such thing as a sorry team or a slouch team. Atlanta has been in a lot of games that they have lost. They are 0-8 but have lost a couple by 1 or 2. They have been playing a lot of teams close and they came out and played great tonight. We didn't play the way we are capable of playing, but we are happy to get the win." Daniels: "Once we thought we had a chance to put them away, they made a couple tough shots and got a couple tough rebounds. There are some things that we have to go back and look at on film and correct some of the defensive mistakes that we made." Mike Woodson: "The only morale boost is for us to get a win. This was a winnable game. We scraped and scratched but they were a little better at the end of the game." Woodson: "We missed 4 of 5 free throws down the stretch and we got beat on some offensive rebounds that really did us in. And we're beyond moral victories at this point. The only thing that will pick up our morale is winning a game. That's the only way we can break out of this funk." Woodson on the 1st quarter: "Well I thought it was cold for both teams. I thought our defense in the 1st quarter was probably the best we've had all year. When you hold a team like this with all the offense they have to 11 points, I say you had a pretty good quarter. I thought the end of the 2nd quarter kind of dictated how we played, had been playing all year, because we can't finish quarters. I mean we threw the ball away right at the end twice that gave them a little momentum and cushion to go in at half up. Unforced turnovers - they didn't do anything, we just threw the ball away." Woodson: "Its frustrating any time you lose. Tonight we were coming down the stretch we missed 4 out of 5 free throws that were crucial. The game was a 5 or 6 point game. You make your free throws you're right there. We had our chances tonight. Missed free throws and offensive rebounds that hurt us tonight down the stretch, I thought." Joe Johnson on extra responsibility: "Most definitely. I take it real hard. This 0-8 start is very frustrating, and I'm just trying my hardest to stay mentally tough and get through this." Johnson on it being a close game: "It doesn't matter. A loss is a loss whether we lost by 30 or 1. So I think our confidence is there, were just not getting it done." Johnson on only 6 fast break points: "All of our buckets come from hard work. I think at times we do go in that self-mode where we think we can do it ourselves. And everybody knows that when you move the ball on offense and share the ball, you make things easier on everybody. The shots will come. So until we figure that out as a team, I think we're going to continue to struggle." Josh Childress: "We played good defense tonight. Unfortunately the offense was stagnant. But we played hard." Childress on if the team is pressing too hard: "No. Everybody wants it so bad, wants that win. Down the stretch we made too many turnovers. But we've got to keep playing, we've got to play through it. Eventually everything will turn out better." Detroit had played a tight game the night before in Houston, but that didn't even come close to explaining what happened in the 1st quarter of this game. Dallas came out like a storm and could do almost nothing wrong while Detroit could do almost nothing right. Dallas jumped out to a 13-3 lead with 8:20 remaining as Dallas hit their first 6 shots. After a Dallas foul was called a shooting foul, Avery Johnson went nuts and got in the ref's ear and got a T. Then Del Harris went nuts and got 1-T tossed. Chauncey Billups hit all 4 free throws to pull Detroit within 10-17 with 6:45 left. Dallas then went on a 21-2 monster run to go up 38-12 with 55 seconds to go as Detroit shot 1-11 FG during the run. The teams traded buckets and Billups got a layup at the quarter's end. Dallas led a jaw-dropping 40-16 after 1. Detroit hadn't allowed a team to score 40 on them in a quarter since 1999. Not surprisingly, Dallas dominated the stats line. Dallas shot 17-21 FG (and had 3 offensive rebounds) and Detroit shot 5-19 FG. Dallas out-rebounded Detroit 14-4. Dallas out-scored Detroit 20-6 in the paint. Josh Howard and Marquis Daniels had 9 points each. Erick Dampier was very effective with 6 points and 6 rebounds. Billups was pretty much Detroit's only offensive weapon as he had 9 points. Dallas led in the 20s most of the 2nd quarter. 7 straight points by the Pistons pulled them within 37-54 with 1:30 left, but Dallas scored the last 4 points of the quarter and led 58-37 at the half. Dallas only shot 6-21 FG in the 2nd quarter, but also shot 6-8 FT while Detroit did not attempt a free throw. Detroit shot 10-36 FG in the quarter. Dampier was up to a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Again, Dallas' lead remained in the 20s for most of the 3rd quarter. A 3-pointer by Rasheed Wallace and layup by Richard Hamilton pulled Detroit within 52-70 with 5:50 remaining, but Dirk Nowitzki answered with a layup and 3-pointer. A 3-pointer by Richard Hamilton pulled Detroit within 62-81 with 2:15 to go, but Howard answered with a 3-pointer to kick off an 7-0 Howard run. Devin Harris hit a bucket at the quarter's buzzer to give Dallas a commanding 90-62 lead. The 4th quarter was pure garbage time as Dallas led in the 30s for all but a shade over a minute of the 12 minutes. Dallas won 119-82. It was a jaw-dropping performance by Dallas. Even with Detroit having played the night before, no one could have expected this outcome - especially with Dallas being without 3 rotation players. It was Detroit's first loss of the season (8-1) - they were the only undefeated team left in the league. And for the first time this season, Dallas never let the opponent get back in the game - once the Mavs got up big, their lead never got smaller than 17 points. Needless to say, the stats from this game strongly favor Dallas. Dallas shot 59.2% (45-76) FG including 2-7 3-pointers and Detroit shot 41.3% (33-80) FG including 4-11 3-pointers. Add to the shooting numbers Dallas killing Detroit on the boards and it's easy to see why this game was such a blowout. Dallas out-rebounded Detroit a whooping 47-26 - and even had a 15-12 edge on offensive rebounds. In the end, it was just a very good night for Dallas and a very poor night for Detroit. Detroit will simply put this game behind them and hopefully Dallas will build on it. Since he has been the goat for the past 2 games, it's only fair that Erick Dampier be mentioned first for the Mavs players. Damp had an excellent game and was very active - he even caught all the passes thrown his way, including a couple that were not on the money. He had 16 points on 8-9 FG, 14 rebounds including 4 offensive, 2 blocks, and 2 fouls in 25 minutes - only 25 due to the blowout. Josh Howard followed up 2 duds (New Orleans and Denver) with 2 solid outings (Atlanta and Detroit). Howard had a game high 26 points, including a "wow" shot as he drove across and hit the scoop shot as he was falling down (fouled), and 8 rebounds including 4 offensive. Dirk Nowitzki had 23 points and 8 rebounds. Marquis Daniels continued to start and had 15 points and 6 assists. Jason Terry had 12 points as all 5 starters were in double-digits. Devin Harris was the 6th Mav in double-digits with 14 points and also had a couple of impressive shots. DeSagana Diop had 2 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks. With the blowout, rookie Josh Powell played and rookie Rawle Marshall and DJ Mbenga saw their first court time this season. Powell had a thunder dunk as part of his 5 points. Marshall had 5 points and Mbenga had 1 point. Darrell Armstrong came in for the last 3 minutes of the game and had 2 points as all 12 Mavs scored. Richard Hamilton was Detroit's high man with 18 points. Chauncey Billups had 12 points and 5 assists. The Wallaces didn't do much this night, but reports were that Ben Wallace suffered a minor injury in the Houston game the night before and was questionable for this game. Ben Wallace had 6 points on 3-4 FG and 0-2 FT and just 4 rebounds in 24 minutes. Rasheed Wallace had 12 points including 5-14 FG and 5 rebounds in 30 minutes. Tayshaun Prince had 10 points on 5-7 FG. Quotes Avery Johnson: "Tonight we got off to a good start. We shot a high percentage in the 1st quarter and our defense was pretty good. Throughout the whole game we had a consistency which we hadn't had but maybe one game this year. Thats a mentally tough team in the Pistons. Fortunately, we put together one of those games where we played well from start to finish. We had some pretty good individual performances, but defensively we really competed against a championship caliber team." Johnson on the 1st quarter: "We weren't going to be as bad as we were the last game. Scoring 11 points in the 1st quarter is pretty deflating. Again, we weathered the storm in that game and came back and scored 29 in the 2nd quarter. Tonight we got off to a better start and really simplified things." Johnson on Dampier: "He was real active tonight. We know what he can do and that is why we stuck with him. I think everybody just wants it on a consistent basis. Staying out of foul trouble and competing defensively is what we are looking for. It helps when he can play the way he played tonight." Johnson: "You always hear about Miami and Detroit and San Antonio and Houston, no matter what their records are. I think these guys want to prove they are a good team." Dirk Nowitzki: "Overall it was a great effort. We really got off to a great start. We really had to address our slow starts. We were down against Atlanta and down the game before against Denver. We just had to come out of the gate a little better and Detroit was a little sluggish early. They had a big game last night at Houston, so we knew they wanted a back-to-back, but we tonight we just played great. Our defense was good, we pushed the ball against them, we penetrated, and everything went our way tonight." Nowitzki: "We really came out aggressive out of the gate. We were pushing the ball and really getting good looks. Tonight was perfect. We had energy. Defensively, I thought we were sharp." Nowitzki: "We really made a conscious effort of running more pick-n-rolls and trying to get in the lane and get into the teeth of their defense. It really worked well. We got a lot of plays out of that because their defense had to collapse and we kicked it out to our shooters. Damp was phenomenal and really set the tone for us. He had a big game and really was physical for us and really was aggressive in both paints." Nowitzki on Dampier: "He was big. He was aggressive. He got rebounds. He was setting up down low and finishing. When he plays like that we're a different animal." Josh Howard: "We concentrated more on the defensive end and rebounding the ball. We wanted to make sure they got one shot and that was it." Howard on if it was a perfect 1st quarter: "It was close. But Avery will show us it wasn't on Monday." Howard: "That's the kind of Dampier we need night in and night out. When he plays like he was tonight, we can't be beat, I don't think." Jason Terry: "We felt if we came out and gave it all we had for the first 2 or 3 quarters, we could get out to a lead. It definitely came down to us having more energy than they did." Erick Dampier: "I tried to go out there tonight and focus on defense and focus on rebounding and let the offense take care of itself. I've got to find ways to get more offensively and not worry about the rebounds. I know I can rebound." Dampier: "Things haven't actually gone the way I wanted them to go the first 6, 7, 8 games. I just tried to go out there tonight and focus on defense and focus on rebounding, and let the offense take care of itself." Dampier on fouls: "Yeah, that's been a problem, too. I was able to stay out of foul trouble tonight and play some quality minutes. A lot of times lately I've picked up 2 or 3 fouls in the 1st quarter and then I don't play again until after halftime." Josh Powell on playing: "It always feels good, but the biggest thing for me though is playing tonight and being able to contribute to the good win we had tonight. Its very meaningful for me and I feel fortunate to be out there tonight and I just want to make the most of it." Powell: "On both ends of the floor we really played well. Everybody was competing and picking each other up. We had great energy and it was a really good win for us. We stayed focused the whole game and we never wanted to let up." Flip Saunders: "I told my staff after the game that if the All-Star ballots came out today instead of 2 days ago Dallas would have had 8 or 9 guys on the ballot. They kicked our butts. Every which way you could get beat we got beat. I told our guys that at times when you're winning like we are and finding ways to win and turning things up you have a chance to play yourself into the game. But tonight they were too good. They were smart. They knew we played a tough game last night and they came out and played well and extremely aggressive." Saunders: "They were smart. They knew we played a tough game last night and we'd been on the road back and forth the last couple of weeks. They jumped on things and played aggressive." Saunders: "You can always learn from this. We have an opportunity to get back to the drawing board, get a little rest, have some good practices, and get ready for the next game on Wednesday. You're not going to go 82-0, but you don't envision coming out playing as bad as we played. We played bad but they had a lot to do with that. They were more aggressive and beating us off the dribble. I can not think of anything we did even halfway decent." Saunders on if there is a positive on getting the first loss: "Of course. I think we can get back to working on things. If you said at the beginning of the season we would go 8-1, we would have been happy with it. Tonight we just got out-played." Chauncey Billups: "We knew they were going come out strong knowing we were coming of the back-to-back. We knew they would come out strong, but we didn't know they'd hit all those shots in a row. They got it going - everything they threw up went in." Billups: "It was a bad game all the way around. Offensively, defensively - everything for us was bad. And everything for them was great." Billups: "You are going to have games like this 2 or 3 times in a season. This one is over now and we're moving on. Not taking anything away from them, they were great. But I look forward to playing them the next time." Tayshaun Prince: "If we played like we played last night we knew there was no way in the world we were going back home 9-0. They knew we were playing back-to-back and they came out aggressive at the start. From our standpoint, on the defensive side it just seemed like we were expecting help. You have to take them one-on-one and take it personally. You can't back down, but you have to go back at them. What were doing is sitting back on defense and not fighting through pick-and-rolls. The last couple games we have been on a roll offensively and that is why we have been winning games. But defensively we have not been close to what we were last year. Its definitely something we can correct, but we just to get back to the basics of keeping our man out of paint, fighting through pick-and-rolls, and just being more aggressive."
