Dallas at Memphis (December 9)

Dallas was again without Jason Terry due to his strained right hamstring.
The game stayed close in the 1st quarter with the largest lead just 4
points. Dallas led 19-16 after 1. Dallas scored the last 4 points of the
2nd quarter to go up 23-16 with 10:15 to go. A 3-pointer by Damon
Stoudamire pulled Memphis within 23-25 with 8:10 left, but Dallas then
scored the next 8 points to go up 33-23 with 5:25 remaining. Then it was
Memphis' turn as the Grizzlies scored the next 7 points to pull within
30-33 with 3:22 to go. And Dallas kept their lead in scoring the next 6
points. Dallas led 43-36 at the half. Dirk Nowitzki had 19 points in the
half. Memphis only shot 29% FG while Dallas shot 44% FG (but Memphis got
to the line twice as much as Dallas, which kept them in the game). Dallas
scored the first 6 points of the 3rd quarter to take their first
double-digit lead at 49-36 with 10 minutes left. A jumper by Marquis
Daniels gave Dallas their largest lead at 57-41 with 5:35 to go. Dallas
led 64-50 with a minute left and a 3-point play by Pau Gasol and 3-pointer
by Shane Battier at the quarter buzzer cut Dallas' lead down to 64-57
after 3. So despite being the much better team through 3 quarters, Dallas
was in for a tight 4th. Daniels scored 4 straight points and Erick
Dampier hit 1-2 FT to give Dallas an 84-76 lead with 2:20 remaining. The
teams traded jumpers and Eddie Jones hit 2 free throws with 1:30 to go.
The teams traded misses and there was a minute left. Darrell Armstrong
made a lazy pass that Battier knocked loose and Damon Stoudamire picked up
the loose ball and went on a break and was fouled by Dirk Nowitzki - his
6th. Stoudamire hit 1-2 FT to cut Dallas' lead down to 86-81 with 37
seconds remaining. Dallas had trouble inbounding the ball and called a
timeout to advance the ball. The ball was inbounded to Keith Van Horn,
but he switched his pivot foot for the travel. Stoudamire hit a jumper
with 23 seconds to go. Dallas again had trouble inbounding the ball and
finally got it inbounded, but to DeSagana Diop, a poor free throw shooter.
Memphis committed the intentional foul and Diop missed both free throws,
so Memphis had a chance to tie the game. Eddie Jones got off a 3-pointer
with Devin Harris in front of him and the ball was well short of the rim
and Armstrong got the rebound and was fouled with 15 seconds left. He hit
both free throws and Stoudamire missed at the other end. 2 free throws by
Van Horn capped the scoring. Dallas won 90-83.

It was a game that should have been easier for the Mavs in the 4th
quarter, but the team slacked off defensively after getting a large lead
late in the 3rd quarter. After only allowing Memphis to score 50 points
through the first 34 minutes of the game, Memphis scored 33 points in the
last 14 minutes of the game. The Mavs were just lucky that Memphis missed
so many free throws - 15 for the game. Memphis definitely benefited from
some home cooking in attempting 17 more free throws than Dallas (23 more
if you take out the 6 that came off of intentional fouls). Memphis shot
30-45 FT and Dallas shot 21-28 FT. Even with Memphis' improved shooting
in the 4th quarter, they still only shot 34.3% (24-70) FG including 5-16
3-pointers. Dallas shot 44% (33-75) FG including 3-7 3-pointers. The
Mavs did a good job on the boards in out-rebounding Memphis 50-38. Both
teams had 14 offensive boards, which benefit Dallas as Memphis missed more
shots. The Mavs got lucky that 2 bone-headed turnovers late in the game
did not end up costing them the win. It wasn't a pretty win, but it was a
win. Thus ended Dallas' 4 game road trip and they won all 4.

Dirk Nowitzki was a stud with 35 points and 9 rebounds before fouling out
late in the game. Marquis Daniels was solid with 18 points, 7 rebounds,
and 6 assists. Adrian Griffin had his first poor outing as he was plagued
by foul problems and had 4 points and no rebounds before fouling out early
in the 4th quarter. Devin Harris' shot wasn't falling, but he did a good
job distributing the ball with 8 assists. He had 10 points including 4-14
FG. Keith Van Horn had 13 points and 4 rebounds and a bone-head turnover.
Darrell Armstrong had the other bone-headed turnover, but stunned everyone
with 10 rebounds - and they weren't ones that were simply falling in his
lap; he was going after them. But he wasn't the high rebounder as Erick
Dampier had 11 boards including 5 offensive to go with his 5 points.
DeSagana Diop didn't score, but had 6 swats and 7 rebounds.

Pau Gasol didn't light up the Mavs this night and finished with 13 points,
8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 turnovers. Mike Miller was the high man for
Memphis with 19 points to go with 8 rebounds. Shane Battier and Damon
Stoudamire sparked the Grizzlies' comeback. Battier had 17 points and
Stoudamire had 15 points and 6 rebounds. Eddie Jones had 14 points on 2-9
FG and 10-12 FT. Bobby Jackson suffered a strained right hamstring late
in the 3rd quarter and did not return.

Quotes
Avery Johnson: "It was a big time war out there tonight. Our guys played
hard, and we were fortunate to come out of here with a win, especially
when two of our main contributors in the 4th quarter - Dirk Nowitzki and
Adrian Griffin - fouled out. Our focus was there, and we were very
fortunate."

Johnson: "We tried to contest shots, but we need to play better individual
defense. We gave up 45 [FTA]. That's really a big number. They also had
14 offensive rebounds and got 2nd chances. But that's what you get when
you're playing a good team on their home court."

Johnson: "We tried to contest a lot of what they did. The only
disappointing things is we've got to do a better job of individual
defense, because they shot 45 free throws. That's really a big number."

Johnson on Gasol and Nowitzki and Bobby Jackson calling Nowitzki soft:
"Well, obviously, they play on 2 teams in the Southwest Division and they
see each other a lot, both internationally and in the NBA. They're both
very competitive players and they both want to win. Dirk Nowitzki is not
soft. Pau Gasol is not soft. They're both terrific players."

Johnson on Pau Gasol: "He's a tough cover for anybody in this league.
He's improved a lot. He's big, he's long, and he just seems to get taller
every time I see him. He also has a better supporting cast. I think a
lot of Eddie Jones and Damon Stoudamire. Battier has improved a lot as
well."

Dirk Nowitzki: "Our focus was crucial to the game plan. We're not a
high-paced team like we used to be 2 or 3 years ago. We're more defensive
now."

Nowitzki: "The 1st half in particular was a good defensive effort for us.
We used to be a high-paced team, but we're not anymore. We're more of a
defensive team."

Nowitzki: "Tonight was about our defense. We were able to control them
and keep them out of the paint, and that was a big part of the game plan.
We're not the high-paced team we were a couple years ago. It starts with
defense now."

Nowitzki on Jackson calling him soft: "Obviously I read those quotes, so I
was a little more focused. But it was a big game, and we had something to
get back after they beat us at home. So no matter what, I think I would
have come out aggressive and with that kind of intensity."

Nowitzki on the soft comment: "I think we responded well as a team. We
responded the right way."

Nowitzki on Gasol and his comments on on 11/26 that Gasol was not as good
as Dallas made him look that night: "We won a big game. We lost a big
game at home the first time we played them. I wasn't disrespecting Pau's
game. If they took that personally, then thats my fault. I don't
disrespect anyones game. That's not my style."

Nowitzki: "I think the whole thing got blown out of proportion a little
bit. I never disrespected Pau's game. I'm a big fan of his game and
always have been. All I really said after that game was he had a special
night and he's a good player, but not the way we made him look that
night."

Erick Dampier: "We can play good defense when we've got our mind made up
to do it. We came up with stops when we needed them."

Darrell Armstrong: "It was a big game. They had won 6 games in a row. We
had won 3 games in a row. This was to see who'll stand 2nd [in the
division]. We just went out and made it happen. You have to give credit
to our team. We have Jason Terry, Josh Howard, and Jerry Stackhouse out.
We just kept fighting and got the victory."

Armstrong: "They came in with a 6 game streak, and we had the 3 game
streak. The game was for 2nd place in the division. It's early, but
that's big. So we wanted to bring it. This game wasn't just about
Memphis. We wanted to send a message to the whole league."

Armstrong on Nowitzki: "He was on fire. Dirk takes the challenge. He's
our leader, and he's the guy we look to when we need a basket."

Mike Fratello: "I think Dirk Nowitzki had a great game. They beat us off
the glass and made their free throws. We were put in a situation and I
was proud of our effort at the end. We shot ourselves in the foot a
couple times. We missed layups and dropped passes. I mean, we were 30%
from the floor. I credit Dallas for their excellent defense. Nowitzki
had an outstanding game. Each guy that came off the bench did something
different to help win. Some blocked shots, some rebounded, and some made
shots. It was a huge game for them."

Fratello on double-teaming Nowitzki: "I have enough respect for a player
like him in this league, but if you double-team him, there are other
things you get hurt on. If you double-team him and he passes the ball,
you end up having holes everywhere. We talked about his aggressiveness."

Fratello on the shot with Dallas up by 3: "We had drawn up a play at the
end to take a wide open 3. If the 3 wasn't wide open we would take an
aggressive move to the basket because there is plenty of time to get
fouled. We covered everything we needed to cover, but the players had to
make their own judgments and its a matter of executing it. If it would
of been a foul, and I'm not saying it was, things may have been
different."

Fratello on what was the key to the game: "They dressed Nowitzki in a
uniform."

Pau Gasol: "We really did a good job in the 4th, we just didn't make our
foul shots. If we made a few of those foul shots that we missed - I think
we were 9-17 in the 4th - maybe it would have been a totally different
game, and we would be much happier now."

Gasol:"I couldn't get it going because they were double-teaming me, so it
was hard. It was a frustrating situation.

Gasol: "It was tough. Dirk made a couple of shots. I couldn't get going.
So it was hard. It was frustrating. I sat on the bench and my mind was
going. I just wanted to do something to help us win."

Gasol: "I wasn't confident in my jump shot. I wasn't sharp at all."

Gasol: "I tried to force my drive a little bit. Overall, it was a
frustrating game for me. I could have done a better job."

Shane Battier: "It was fun to be out there tonight. It took us a little
while to start playing and we were just a few plays away from a different
outcome."

Battier: "We shot poorly, only 35% and 67 from the line. But we did a
good job defensively, only allowing 90 points. We just never got our flow
off."

Battier: "The crowd got into it because of our great 4th quarter; we had
to spark something to get them into it. The last of the 3rd we really got
going, and it got the fans back into it."

Eddie Jones: "They came out and we did not move the ball well the 1st 3
quarters. We moved the ball real stagnant and they did a lot of
run-and-gun. We just didn't make our foul shots."

Jones: "We got open looks. That team is not that great defensively. We
missed shots at the rim. We missed open shots on the perimeter."

Jones: "It was all about us making plays. We did it late, but we didn't
do it early. It catches up with you sometimes, when you don't do it
early."

Jones on his 3-point attempt late in the game: "I totally got fouled. My
shot that short and he's going into my shot? Come on. I told [the ref]
'Watch the film.'" [no foul seen from the replay shown on TV]

Jones on the next game: "We have to get back to ourselves. We were on our
heels tonight; we were on our heels instead of being aggressive. We were
trying to do it by ourselves instead of doing it as a team. I always feel
like its up to us. They played great, but its always up to us. If we had
played differently in the first 3 quarters, I really feel like it would
have been a different game."

Dahntay Jones: "This is a great team, and this is going to be a great
match up in the division. We just have to take care of our business at
home and see how it all plays out in the end."

Boston at Dallas (December 29)

It was the 2nd night of a back-to-back for both teams and Dallas was happy
to welcome back Jason Terry, who had missed the last 5 halves with a
strained right hamstring. The game stayed close in the 1st quarter with
neither team holding more than a 3 point lead. Keith Van Horn hit a
3-pointer at the quarter buzzer to give Dallas a 28-23 lead after 1. Both
teams shot over 50% FG. Dan Dickau opened the 2nd quarter with a
3-pointer, but Dallas then went on a 9-2 run to go up 37-28 with 7:30 to
go. Boston then scored the next 6 points, but Dallas answered with a
jumper and 3-pointer o go up 44-34 with 4:30 remaining. Boston scored the
next 7 points and Dallas held a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter.
Ricky Davis hit a 3-pointer with a few seconds left in the quarter.
Dallas led 52-47 at the half. Dallas opened the 3rd quarter with a 12-1
run to go up 64-48 with 7:40 left. A dunk by Devin Harris gave Dallas
their largest lead at 69-52 with 5:15 to go. Dallas led 73-58 with 3
minutes to go and for the 2nd game in a row had a 3rd quarter lapsed and
allowed Boston to score the next 9 points. Paul Pierce and Devin Harris
collided and both went down, but were able to return to action after a
timeout. Terry hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to give Dallas a
76-67 lead after 3. Dallas' lead see-sawed between 9 and 11 points over
the first 4 minutes of the 4th quarter. A 3-point play by Al Jefferson
and layup by Ricky Davis pulled Boston within 78-84 with 7:20 remaining.
Boston scored 7 straight points to pull within 87-88 with 4:40 left. But
when Boston wasn't putting up bricks, Dallas was swatting their shots and
Dallas scored the next 8 points (including 6-10 FT) to go up 96-87 with a
minute to go - Boston missed 9 straight shots including 3 that were
blocked. Pierce ended Boston's drought with a 3-pointer with 42 seconds
remaining, but Dallas shot 7-8 FT the rest of the way to seal the win.
Dallas won 103-94.

It would be nice if Dallas for once showed the killer instinct and didn't
let a team back into the game after going up big, but at least they are
hanging on for the win. Boston shot really well throughout the game
before going cold late in the game (they were at 62% FG at one point
during the 4th) but Dallas benefited from some home cooking (even taking
out the intentional fouls Boston committed at the end of the game) and the
Mavs had a huge advantage from the free throw line. Dallas shot 33-43 FT
including 17-22 FT in the 4th quarter. Boston shot just 8-14 FT. The
Celtics were called for twice as many fouls as the Mavs. Dallas shot
47.1% (33-70) FG including 4-10 3-pointers and Boston shot 53.3% (40-75)
FG. The Mavs were pretty clean with the ball with only 9 turnovers and
Boston had 15 turnovers. The game kicked off a 5-game home stand for
Dallas.

Dirk Nowitzki didn't shoot that well from the field, but got to the line
10 times and hit all 10 free throws. He had 24 points including 7-20 FG
and 9 rebounds. Adrian Griffin was back to his tenacious form and had a
double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds including 6 offensive. The
Mavs got solid center play as Erick Dampier had 6 points on 3-3 FG and 3
rebounds and DeSagana Diop had 3 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 blocks,
including 2 big ones in the last 3 minutes of the game. Jason Terry
returned to action and Dallas watched his minutes. He had 12 points and
4 assists in 23 minutes. Devin Harris produced from the bench and got to
the line in attacking the basket. Harris had 10 points including 13-17
FT and 4 assists in 28 minutes. Marquis Daniels had 15 points, 4
rebounds, and 3 assists and Keith Van Horn chipped in 9 points and 2
rebounds.

As usual, the Celtics were led by Paul Pierce. Pierce had 28 points
including 7-10 FT, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Not as usual, Boston got a
big night from Al Jefferson, carrying a bigger (and not all muscle) frame
than the skinny thing he used to be. Jefferson had a career night with 21
points including 10-14 FG and 12 rebounds including 5 offensive. Ricky
Davis was the 3rd Celtic with 20+ points with 20 points to go with 5
rebounds and 5 assists. Raef LaFrentz came off the bench for the first
time this season and had 10 points and 5 rebounds in 29 minutes.

The funny moment of the night came when a video during a timeout was
actually funny and entertaining [very rare]. So kudos to whomever came
up with the idea for the "Avery Bunch" take on the Brady Bunch intro.

Quotes
Avery Johnson: "It was a game of waves. We had a big lead and they got it
down to 1. It just shows we have a lot to work on. We aren't a team
that has arrived yet. We don't have the ability to put away teams like I
would like to."

Johnson: "We didn't have the explosion we like and they shot 53%, which
shows it wasn't a perfect game for us."

Johnson on allowing teams to get back in the game: "It's hard to protect a
lead in this league. More than getting a lead, I kind of get excited when
teams make fierce comebacks on us and we're able to withstand it and get
stops or maybe get to the free throw line."

Johnson: "We just couldn't get on the type of runs that we wanted. We
wanted to push it a little bit, but we just seemed like we just didn't
have the explosion."

Johnson on Diop: "You saw DeSagana with the big blocks, highlight type of
blocks. He's been doing that pretty consistently for us."

Johnson on Dampier and Diop: "Erick did a lot of good things inside and
DeSagana had some big blocks, highlight blocks."

Dirk Nowitzki: "We're confident right now. Any time you have a winning
streak going, you feel confident about yourself. In this winning streak,
down the stretch, we've really been executing well on both ends of the
court."

Nowitzki: "Our defense wasn't great in most of the 2nd half. We had to
step it up to win the game. Defensively, we had some work to do."

Nowitzki: "We let them get back in it and it kind of slipped away.
Jefferson got a lot of points in the paint against us. It should have
never gotten to that point. We had a nice lead. We were up like 16, 17
points and they cut it all the way to 1."

Nowitzki on Griffin: "I really like his addition on both ends of the
floor. He's making that little 16-, 17-footer when you give it to him.
He's actually a good rebounder for his size. He really gets in there and
makes stuff happen."

Nowitzki on Diop: "He gives us, at the backup center, something we've
never had here, and that's a presence [in the middle] every night. He's
been great. And the great thing about it is he's only 23."

Jason Terry on his hamstring: "It's an injury that will be there, but I
can play through it. I'm not 100%, but I was able to get up and down."

Terry on his hamstring: "It's an injury that will be there, but I can play
through it. I felt good, and was able to get up and down. Thank God I
have a body that heals quickly."

Marquis Daniels on Diop: "He's been big all year for us. ... If we get
beat, we know we have somebody back there that's either going to contest
the shot, change it or block it."

Devin Harris: "I just attacked the basket. That's why I got [to the free
throw line] so often."

Harris on his collision with Pierce in the 3rd: "It wouldn't be a game if
I didn't take a fall. I was collecting my thoughts and making sure
everything was working."

Harris on Diop: "He made some key blocks and got some key rebounds. We
know if we do make a mistake, it helps the defense knowing we've got a
shot-blocker back there."

Harris on Diop: "It's beautiful. He's really stepping up, and it's nice
to know if we make a mistake, he's a threat back there with the block."

DeSagana Diop: "I just tried to get as many blocks as I could. I've got
some hops, man, and I know when to go and try to get them. You can't get
them all. But those were 2 big blocks and it helped the team win the
game."

Diop on Jefferson: "He scored a couple quick baskets on me, so I figured I
better start blocking shots."

Adrian Griffin: "I just play hard, man, and I'm excited about the year.
Basketball is basketball. I just try to hustle and make some plays."

Doc Rivers: "I think we had 3 layups that were blocked. They play
defense, they get stops. That goes to Avery. I think he's made a
complete difference in the team because they tried to out-score you in the
past. In a game like this tonight, I think we win the game in the past."

Rivers on late in the 4th: "We had good shots and good execution. 3 of
them were layups that were blocked and 2 were open looks."

Rivers: "You know you can execute and miss shots. I think we had 3 layups
that were blocked and 2 wide open shots. So I will take those. The only
1 that was disappointing was when Del [West] got blocked going to the
basket. If you're going to make that decision, you'd better make the
layup. When you have Paul Pierce on your team, Ricky Davis and Al
Jefferson rolling, you better make that layup. Sometimes you just have to
be the point."

Rivers on the free throw difference: "I thought we attacked the basket as
much as them, but we didn't go to the line. They were more forceful."

Rivers on the free throw difference: "It's frustrating, but we attacked.
They were a little more forceful. We used to be a great team getting to
the line. Now, if Paul doesn't get to the line, then we don't."

Rivers on why Pierce stayed in the game with a sprained ankle: "If we take
him out with the bruise, we would have had to keep him out."

Rivers on playing Pierce: "I had to keep him on the floor. Paul got
tired, but we had no choice. He told me that if we sat him down, he was
done."

Rivers: "This team, even when they're down, they've fought back. We're
not winning games, but I think we will by the end of this campaign and I
think we're going to be okay. Our young guys are growing up before our
eyes."

Paul Pierce: "They were executing. Even when their shots weren't falling,
they were able to get to the line better than we did tonight."

Pierce: "We got a lot of good looks. Raef took a 3 that could have put
us into the lead. We had a lot of good shots. We can learn from this,
and then later in the season there will be games like this that we can
pull out at the end."

Pierce: "Hopefully, we can learn from this. Hopefully, later in the
season, these are games we can be pulling out. They executed even when
their shots weren't falling and were able to get to the line better than
we were. That just shows a veteran team."

Pierce on his ankle: "It's sore. I'll rest it for a couple of days and
see how it feels, but it's pretty sore right now."

Ricky Davis: "We executed good [down the stretch] and got the plays we
wanted. The last couple of shots we just didn't make at the end. Guys
are growing each game, bit I think we just need to go forward and get back
in games and try to win them."

Davis on going 2-3 on the road trip: "It was a good trip. You could ask
for better but it was a pretty good trip. We got back into the games.
Now we just need to go forward and win them."

Kendrick Perkins on starting: "I just came in focused. I came to do my
job and it worked out well for me. Some games it might not go that well,
but some games if it does, you've just got to take advantage of it."
