Game 2: Memphis at Dallas (April 26) It was an offensive game in the 1st quarter as neither team was able to stop the other. Dallas scored 6 straight points to take a 9-5 lead with 9:35 remaining, but the game stayed close with Dallas holding a small lead, none larger than 4 points. Mike Miller converted a 3-point play with a fraction of a second left in the quarter. Dallas led 32-31 after 1. Josh Howard had 12 points and Pau Gasol had 10 points. Dallas shot 11-15 FG and 9-9 FT and Memphis shot 11-21 FG including 4-5 3-pointers. Miller converted a 3-point play and Lorenzen Wright got a putback dunk to give Memphis a 36-32 lead with 10:45 left. Dirk Nowitzki then scored the next 9 points to put Dallas up 41-36 with 8:15 to go. Both DeSagana Diop and Erick Dampier picked up their 3rd foul midway through the quarter, so DJ Mbenga came into the game and played well the rest of the quarter. Dallas led 46-43 with 5:50 remaining and Memphis collapsed and didn't score again in the quarter in missing 5 shots, missing a free throw and having a lane violation on the 2nd free throw (technically a turnover), and committing 6 turnovers the rest of the quarter and Dallas scored the last 10 points of the quarter to go up 56-43 at the half. Nowitzki had 13 points in the quarter and 21 for the half (and Gasol did not score in the 2nd quarter). Dallas out-scored Memphis 24-12 in the 2nd quarter as the Grizzlies shot just 4-13 FG and had 10 turnovers (after having none in the 1st quarter). Memphis' struggles continued to open the 3rd quarter as they missed 2 shots and committed 2 more turnovers and Dallas scored the first 5 points of the quarter to go up 61-43 with 10 minutes left. Gasol hit 2 free throws, but Jason Terry nailed a 3-pointer late in the shot clock. Eddie Jones got a dunk with 8:20 left to end Memphis' 10:45 drought without a field goal (7:07 in the 2nd quarter). But Memphis would get no closer than 15 points in the quarter. Dallas closed the quarter with a bucket inside by Devin Harris and layup by Jerry Stackhouse gave Dallas their largest lead at 76-56 after 3. Dallas out-scored Memphis 20-13 in the 3rd quarter as Memphis shot just 4-13 FG. Dallas' lead ranged between 16 and 20 points of the first 6 minutes of the 4th quarter. A 3-pointer by Bobby Jackson pulled Memphis within 71-86 with 5:35 remaining, but Harris answered with a 3-point play. Jackson scored on consecutive possessions to pull Memphis within 78-91 with 1:35 to go, but Josh Howard hit a jumper on Dallas' next possession and Memphis would connect on just 1 free throw the rest of the way. Dallas won 94-79. Dallas leads the series 2-0. The game started with a surprise with both teams scoring so easily that you knew both coaches, with their defensive pride, had to be going nuts. Then Memphis simply collapsed in the 2nd quarter and Dallas, to their credit, took advantage and built a double-digit lead. Some of their turnovers were unforced and you could just see them start to hang their heads and get down on themselves as nothing was working. Dallas did force some turnovers (and I disagree with Fratello's implying all the offensive fouls were unforced), but some were as silly as bouncing the ball off a leg. It was such a dramatic turn around after the 1st quarter - Memphis had 31 points in the 1st quarter and just 25 points combined in the 2nd and 3rd quarters; they had no turnovers in the 1st quarter and 15 turnovers combined in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Even though it was a blowout, it wasn't a stellar game by the Mavs - they went through a couple of droughts themselves (though much shorter than Memphis'). Though their defense was lax in the 1st quarter, they did pick it up in the 2nd quarter. The Mavs did start the game with the intent of pushing the ball and that worked out well for them. For the game, Dallas shot 44.9% (31-69) FG including 4-14 3-pointers. Memphis shot 45.9% (28-61) FG as the Grizzlies again set an opponent playoff low for FGA (had 62 in game 1) and tied the opponent playoff low for FGM. They also shot 5-14 3-pointers (but just 1-9 3-pointers after the 1st quarter). Dallas shot 28-36 FT and Memphis shot 18-26 FT. Dallas out-rebounded Memphis 37-34 including 11-7 offensive. Memphis committeed 20 turnovers and Dallas had 13 turnovers - and Memphis had just 1 steal in the game. Game 3 is Saturday at 4:30 pm in Memphis. Dirk Nowitzki again lead the way for Dallas with 31 points - 21 of which came in the 1st half - including 12-14 FT. It wasn't an all-around game for him, though, as he had just 4 rebounds (and 2 came in the last 4 minutes of the game) and 1 assist. He picked up 2 fouls in the 1st quarter (one off a bad call), but only had 1 more the rest of the game. 12 of Josh Howard's 17 points came in the 1st quarter. He also had 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Jason Terry played really well and found Nowitzki and Howard for passes early and often. 8 of his 9 assists came in the 1st half. He also had 16 points and 6 rebounds. DJ Mbenga provided a bit of energy and hustle in the 2nd quarter and DeSagana Diop and Erick Dampier picked up their 3rd fouls. Mbenga had 2 points, 2 rebounds, and a block in 6 minutes in the 2nd quarter (came in for the last minute of the game and had another rebound). Diop hasn't been effective in his first 2 playoff games and had just 3 points, 1 rebound, and 5 fouls in 14 minutes in this game. Dampier had a quieter night after his strong first game with 8 points including 2-8 FG, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 26 minutes. Adrian Griffin played his role and had 6 points on 3-3 FG, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists in 20 minutes. Marquis Daniels missed his only shot, but had 4 rebounds and 3 assists in 18 minutes. Devin Harris was aggressive in his time on the court as he is returning to form. He had 8 points including 3-4 FG in 15 minutes. Jerry Stackhouse didn't do much and had 4 points on 2-7 FG and 3 rebounds in 24 minutes. Josh Powell saw his first playoff action in resting Nowitzki during the 2nd quarter and he also came in at the tail end of the game. 1 foul was his only stat in 4 minutes Darrell Armstrong missed his only attempt and only played the last 1:20 of the game. Pau Gasol started strong with 10 points, but disappeared after that. He finished with 16 points, a game high for Memphis. He also had 7 rebounds and 5 assists, both game highs for Memphis. 7 of Bobby Jackson's 12 points came in the last 6 minutes of the game as he tried to give Memphis a spark, but he didn't get any help. He only had 1 assist and had 5 turnovers in his 28 minutes. Eddie Jones was the only other Grizzly in double-digits with 11 points. He also had 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Chucky Atkins didn't have foul trouble as an excuse for his poor outing this time. Atkins had 7 points including 2-8 FG in 26 minutes. He did have 4 assists. Key 6th man Mike Miller had just 9 points including 2-7 FG and 5 rebounds in 24 minutes. Jake Tsakalidis reverted to form after a strong game 1 and didn't attempt a shot and had 2 rebounds in 16 minutes. Shane Battier had 4 points, 4 fouls, and 4 turnovers. Dahntay Jones and Lorenzen Wright each had 8 points. The officiating was terrible all away around, not surprising when I saw who the refs were. Bennett Salvatore is only behind Joey Crawford for refs I don't want officiating an important game. Quotes [Johnson's, Nowitzki's, Fratello's, and Gasol's quotes and the first 2 quotes from Howard and Terry transcribed by me] Avery Johnson: "Obviously tonight we'll just take this victory any kind of way we can get it. It's a good thing to be in this situation. But, boy, it's also a good thing to know that you're playing against a physical, tough, hard-nose basketball team in Memphis. A team that is really just hard to score on. And, boy, you better make strong moves and hard moves because they make every possession tough on you. This series is not over. We've been in that position before. We have a lot of respect for what they do throughout the course of the game and see why they are one of the top teams in the Western Conference. There's still another level for the Mavericks to go to and we're just not there yet. We got stuck quite a bit in the 4th quarter. But again, I thought defensively after the 1st quarter, we did get some stops and [were] pretty active. Got our hands on some balls. Fortunately some turnovers were unforced and forced on both ends, but we'll take any kind of easy baskets we can get in this series because they're very hard to come by. Again, like I told you guys after the first game, this series is going to be a tough 7 game series and we just got to try to go down to Memphis and know it's going to be pretty crazy down there and hopefully be around in the 4th quarter to give ourselves a chance to win because we know they're going to come out strong like they did tonight when they scored 31 points on us." Johnson on the 2nd quarter: "Well we had to make a few adjustments there. But again, they were really aggressive. We were just a step behind. We were playing on our heels. We were not physical - really disappointed with that. So we talked about it a little bit and they came out and fortunately Memphis missed some shots over the 2nd and 3rd quarters and we were able to get some rebounds and get out on the break a little bit. We were pretty happy that we were up 11 to nothing on the break after the 1st half, but we kind of slowed down quite a bit in the 2nd half. They threw the press at us a little bit - we didn't handle that well, so we'll have a look at that because we were up by 20 at that point and they threw the press on us and, boy, we got stuck the rest of the game. So that will be something we have to work on. That was my fault. And we'll just keep working on it." Johnson on Powell and Mbenga: "Boy they did, they gave us a couple of minutes there where Dirk was in a little foul trouble and I wanted to give him a blow. He looked like he was a little tired. And since he looked tired tonight, he promised coach that instead of working out 3 times tomorrow, he's only going to work out 1 time. So I'm supposed to be happy because of this. So he's not going to work out 3 separate times, 2 hours each, tomorrow. He's only going to work out 1 time. So Powell gave us a blow there. DJ was pretty good. He did some really nice things for us when both of our centers were in foul trouble." Johnson on if he was happy with the team pushing the ball: "I really was. I think that's a key to what we're all about is trying to play at our tempo. We don't naturally play as fast as we used to play, but we still play a little bit faster than Memphis a little bit. And that's what we want to try to do some time when we get a chance. So we were pretty much playing at our tempo and we feel pretty comfortable when we're playing at our tempo." Johnson on Terry: "JT started off the game pushing it. He started off the game really being aggressive. And, boy, JT's just come so far. Man, he's come so far. And, you know, I don't have to scream at him as much like I did in Orlando." Johnson on Mbenga: "DJ did well. He was in there and he's really been working hard. He's a guy that comes to practice and works really hard. They pretty much haven't seen a lot of Mbenga. He came out and gave us 6 or 7 quality minutes. He rebounded the ball, great blocked shot, good finish, 2 free throws rather. Again, Damp was battling a little foul trouble, but he came back strong. So we need all 3 of our centers in this series." Johnson on Harris: "We were really looking for Devin to make a step forward tonight and he did, even though he only played 15 minutes. Boy, he was a little more aggressive. Only 1 turnover. Hopefully he'll continue to knock the rust off because we know we're going to need him as this series goes on." Johnson on turnovers: "Yeah, we'll take it. Any kind of way we can get it - whether they are forced or unforced, we're not going to be chosey in that situation. We'll take 20 turnovers every night. Because if we get turnovers like that, we'll have a chance to get some easy baskets. And conversely, boy, we got to take care of the ball against Memphis because they are very active defensively and we got to take care of the ball and make sure that we have a good chance to get good shots, especially in Memphis. We're going into a hostile environment, so we better be ready to play." Dirk Nowitzki: "I wanted to come out really, really aggressively and made my first couple of shots, felt great. Got 2 [foul] calls and it kind of took me out of the game a little bit. But once I came back, guys were looking for me. I got open a couple of times and just felt great in the 1st half. But whatever rhythm I had in the 1st half was definitely gone in the 2nd half. I had a lot of good looks in the 2nd half that I didn't make. Overall, I think we played some good defense, held them to 79 points. Once we do that, we will always be in a position to win a game. So that was that." Nowitzki on the tempo: "I think we have a lot of athletes that are great in the open court with Marquis and Josh and JET [Terry] so fast and obviously Devin. Really, we've been trying to do it all season long, but in some games it didn't really work our way. But once we rebound and we push the ball, it's good sometimes. In the playoffs, everything in halfcourt is so tough. The opponents know what you do. They know every call better than probably yourself. It's good to push the ball and get some open looks in transition and get some layups and get the crowd going. So that was great." Nowitzki on if Dallas is in control: "Obviously it's a lot better than being down 0-2 like last year. But, you know, we came back from 0-2 last year and ended up winning the series, so really anything is possible in sports. So we expect them to come out swinging on Saturday, especially at home. We just got to be ready. That's the bottom line. In this league you can never relax. I was part of a playoff series one year against Portland. We're up 3-0. We relaxed a little bit in that 4th game. They found their rhythm. Next thing you know, we found ourselves in a 7th game. So you always want to keep the pressure up, especially in the playoffs. So we'll see how we come out on Saturday." Nowitzki: "In this league there are competitors and athletes and all the competitors in this league have a pride about themselves and nobody just throws the towels in. Everybody wants to fight and wants to show what they're capable of. So I don't expect them just to throw it in. They're going to come out firing on all angles and we got to be ready. Especially on the road, it's always big that our defense is there, that we rebound, and put ourselves in a position to win the game." Nowitzki on Gasol: "He's really developed his game to where he is an All-Star, where he is a superstar in this league over the last couple of years. He's got the complete package with passing and rebounding and scoring. So he's a tough player to play and to guard. He's their team leader. I think he's doing a good job. He came out on fire today. Had like 10 or 12 points in the 1st quarter. I think after that we did a decent job on him. We got the ball out of his hands some. We met him early and tried to be physical with him because, really, that's the only way you can play him. I think he's still so young. He'll be an even more tremendous in this league." Josh Howard: "Just getting to the basket. Finding the open man. Just trying to make my team better." Howard: "We kept our hands in the passing lanes a lot. We made sure they got one shot and that was it. We made sure we got out on the break, and that was a big thing for us tonight." Howard on defense: "Guys are buying into Avery's system like we've been saying all year. We're just contesting a lot of shots and making sure they get just one shot and we get the rebound." Howard on the 2nd quarter: "I think that was big for us. We know that if we let those guys stick around, they'll be there at the end of the game. We just wanted to clamp down, and we did a great job on Pau. I think he only scored 4 points in the 2nd half, and I give that credit to Gana [Diop] and Damp and even DJ [Mbenga] when he came in. He came in and did a great job for us." Howard on defending Gasol: "You've got to send him the opposite way of where he likes to go. Our big guys have paid attention to the scouting report and they are really doing their job." Howard: "I don't think we're in their heads. But we're real confident right now. We haven't played our best defense yet, but it's coming." Jason Terry on defense: "That's what it's all about. It's all about getting stops on the defensive end, getting out on transition, and getting easy baskets. You saw a lot of that in the 1st half. The 2nd half, we didn't do it as much, but we till were getting stops. And that's what this series is all about and the whole playoffs. It's about our defense, playing our system." Terry: "You don't want to get in a halfcourt game. We can do that, but our style is to get up and down, get easy baskets and then if we don't, then get something good. But tonight I thought the bench came in and did another solid job. Defensively, DJ Mbenga came in and gave us a lift, so that was good. JHo [Howard] was back to slashing to the basket, getting out in transition. Dirk was Dirk. It is 0-2. That's how we're going down to Memphis, it's 0-2, we're down and our backs are against the wall." Terry: "We're just moving the ball around. If guys are knocking down shots, assist numbers are going to be up." Terry on his game: "I can get a lot better." Jerry Stackhouse: "Our identity as an offensive team is set. As a defensive team, we're still a question mark to the masses. But we know we're capable of winning that way." Stackhouse on Memphis: "We're just putting pressure on those guys by making sure they don't get easy looks. Once they have to create, they're not as good." Stackhouse on Mbenga: "It was good to see DJ come in. Dirk got into foul trouble and Powell got in, and I think these guys worked hard during the regular season to prepare themselves if they get a chance in the playoffs." Mike Fratello: "Well the game start to get away with 7 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter. It was 46-43 and we then proceeded to have 7 turnovers to end the quarter, we did not score another point. Basically that's where things started to fall apart at the seems. And it happened at both ends. We had 2 or 3 defensive break downs right in a row, mistakes that we made and then the 7 turnovers - 4 of which were offensive fouls to end the quarter. Again, 20 turnovers for us. Last time 19 for 28 points, this time 20 for 17 points. And it puts you in a hole that's very difficult to come back from when you get yourself down 18, 16-18 points, you're trying to work your way back in. In the areas of improvement: we rebounded better and we played well for the 1st quarter and 5 minutes of the 2nd quarter. But then it started just [to] unravel, self inflicted. 4 offensive fouls - that's not giving yourself a chance right there. So they took their 2 here at home. We go back to our place now. We have a couple of days to try to put this back in order and see if we can regroup and play better at our place." Fratello when asked about the turnovers: "I just said we had 7 turnovers. I mean, what else can I say. That's what I just told you: we had 7 turnovers. I don't know how to answer the question any differently. It was 7:07 remaining, it was a 3 point game, we had 7 turnovers, 4 offensive fouls. If i can describe differently, help me out." Fratello on Dallas' running game: "Because a lot of them are turnovers that they're running back at us on. If we can take care of the ball better, get high percentage shots, if we execute our offense better then they hopefully wouldn't have as many opportunities of running the ball back at us. But if you are going to turn it over, it's a problem. It's not like this team can't score in transition. They can. And the more possessions you give them, the more they're going to score. It's a difference of 7 in turnovers here - 20 for us, 13 for them. There's a difference in 8 field goal attempts tonight - 69 for them, 61 for us. Possessions become very important. So you are going to keep turning it over and not force turnovers at the other end, you are asking for a problem." Fratello on game 3: "The obvious that Dallas at home, they won both games. We go back to our building now with our fans. We have to have the effort and energy and we'll have the support of our people there. We're playing a great team. So we know that when they come in the building, we have to play our best basketball game. We have to be near perfect against them for 48 minutes, for 48 minutes. And that's the biggest thing. It's 48 minutes. Learning to substain what you do for 48 minutes. The 1st quarter, 32-31. Okay, that's just 12 minutes and there's still 36 minutes to go. So you have to substain that over 48 minutes. We scored 12 points with 8 turnovers in the 2nd quarter. It's tough to score when you're giving the ball away 8 possessions." Fratello on if the turnovers were forced: "Both. I said 4 offensive fouls. That's us screening people and moving, what ever the officials are calling. So some were forced, some were us, creating them ourselves." Pau Gasol on the 2nd quarter: "They started doubling. Kind of stopped running plays for the postups. I don't know, we kind of got lost a little bit, especially in the 2nd quarter. We just got out of the game for a few minutes and that really cost us. So that's what happened." Gasol: "Turnovers caused that you hand over control of the game. And it was frustrating. It was frustrating the way we were turning the ball over and giving it back to them without making them work for it. It was really frustrating because it was really an intense game for a while at the beginning and we had a very good chance to be right there. Like I said, we lost it for a few minutes and we paid for it. It was a lot of things that they called with the fouls - I don't know how many - but a lot of them unusual. I mean, the playoffs is about playing a little more physical. They called a lot of blocking, moving screens, fouls. But you know, nothing we can do. We just got to focus on keeping our feet set and just play with the same intensity we did tonight. I think we came out very aggressively and the right way. We just, like I said, we lost it for a little bit for a few minutes and really paid the consequences." Gasol on recovering: "It's always hard, especially in our situation because everybody keeps emphasizing that fact that we haven't won a playoff game. It is a little hard, but at the same time, luckily we got some players that have been around this kind of situation before and are going to help us to get a positive mentality about it. And what they did is just they won their 2 games. They did what they were supposed to do here. I think we played them tough for the most part and we just had a couple of breakdowns in 2 games that really hurt us. Game 1, we just didn't play as hard as they did, I think, especially in that 1st half, and we paid the consequence. And then today, in the 2nd quarter we just lost it for a few minutes and so we're down 2-0. But we have to come out hard on game 3 and really establish ourselves and get a win there. And then the whole scenario changes. But we got to do it. We just got to make it happen." Gasol on game 3: "It's going to be huge. It's going to be huge. I think that this crowd really carried them as far as energy. I'm guessing that it was pretty fun for them to play here with this kind of crowd. So we're really looking forward to go back home and have that kind of feeling and that kind of energy that we're definitely going to feed off and that's going to give us what we have to keep our minds in the game for 48 minutes. I think that's one of the things we have to do, keep our minds in the game for 48 minutes and we'll be in good shape. I think we're going to play hard. We played really hard tonight, we just, like I said, we kind of broke down for a few minutes and that really cost us." Gasol on the tempo: "We have to try to stop them earlier. They could not get as comfortable as they have in these last couple of games, period. We were right there in both games, but it's hard to keep that kind of pace. So we just got to stop them earlier. We got to figure a way to get them out of their rhythm, out of their plays, out of their comfort zone. We got to do it, no matter how we're going to do it, we got to figure it out in these couple of days. How to come out and get them out of their rhythm, make them feel uncomfortable out there, take tough shots, force turnovers. We're a good defensive team. We just got to do it earlier. I know that it's a playoff game. We just got to make it happen and hopefully in game 3 it's going to be a different story, a different scenario for us. And I'm really excited about that. Going back home with our fans and get this monkey off our back, that is really getting heavy right now." Mike Miller: "They can score in bunches and they did a good job of putting us away." Shane Battier: "We turned the ball over too much and after that we had our heads down. We just didn't have it." Battier: "No one remembers if you lost by a point or 15. We're down 2-0. ... Now we have to draw strength on the fact that we won 30 games at home." Battier on Nowitzki: "I didn't do a very good job on him. You just try to make him work, and he made shots over me and around me." Eddie Jones on their 2nd and 3rd quarter drought: "That was amazing. They're a good team, but they're not that great defensively." Jones on game 3: "Right now, we're playing just like it's the last meal. We've got to go in with that attitude. We've got to find somehow and some way to get it done." Bobby Jackson: "We're not going to win any games if we turn the ball over like that. We've been taking care of the ball all season but now we're just, for some reason, turning the ball over a little bit too much right now." Jackson: "We just came out with no energy in the 2nd quarter and the 3rd quarters. Even though the refereeing was horrible tonight, we've got to fight through that and don't let it affect us." Lorenzen Wright on the 2nd quarter: "Everything was going good up until then. We've got to quit having the mental lapses because that's what's costing us. Their experience is taking them over. They're still coming at us, and they're still making it happen for them some kind of way." Wright: "We've got 2 days to fix what went wrong. We have to hold on to our homecourt, and that's what we plan to do."
