Note that the start time for Saturday's game 3 has been changed to 7 pm Central from the originally listed 4 pm and will now be broadcast on ABC. The NBA fined Mark Cuban $100,000 for going on the court during game 1 vs San Antonio to complain about a non-call and $100,000 for criticizing on his blog how the league selects the playoffs refs. Game 2: Dallas at San Antonio (May 9) Looking to increase the pace and offense, Devin Harris was inserted into the lineup in place of Adrian Griffin. Dirk Nowitzki was called for a foul a mere 12 seconds into the game and Tim Duncan hit 1-2 FT to open the scoring. Dallas then scored the next 7 points to go up 7-1 with 10:20 remaining as the Spurs committed 3 straight turnovers. Both coaches picked up early technicals as the refs were (fairly consistently) letting a lot of contact go inside. DeSagana Diop picked up his 2nd foul with 7:45 left. Dallas continued to hold a small lead and led 15-12 with 6 minutes to go. The Mavs then went on a 10-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Jerry Stackhouse, to go up 25-14 with 3:30 left. But that would be Dallas' last field goal of the quarter as they missed their last 8 shots. San Antonio scored the next 8 points to pull within 22-25 with a minute remaining. A free throw by Stackhouse capped the quarter scoring. Dallas led 26-22 after 1. Josh Howard had 11 points and Tim Duncan had 12 points. Howard hit a jumper on Dallas' first possession of the 2nd quarter to end the Mavs' 3:45 field goal drought. Dallas hit 3 straight free throws (with the first being off a technical foul on Nick Van Exel griping over a non-call) to go up 38-28 with 8:35 left. A minute later Van Exel was subbed out and as he sat on the bench, he threw a towel at the ground - the ref saw it and tossed Van Exel. A layup by Tony Parker pulled San Antonio within 32-40 with 7 minutes remaining, but that would be the Spurs' last field goal of the quarter as they completely lost focus in the game and started whining about the officiating instead of playing through any calls and non-calls. A 3-pointer by Howard kicked off a 13-1 run to put Dallas up 53-33 with 3:35 to go. Tim Duncan was called for an offensive foul with 6:20 left and was very unhappy about the call (don't know why as the refs have fairly consistently been calling it that way over the past 3 years) and had to sit the rest of the quarter as it was his 3rd foul. Dallas led 58-38 at the half. San Antonio shot 0-10 FG and 6-10 FT over the last 7 minutes of the quarter. Dallas out-scored San Antonio 32-16 in the 2nd quarter. For the half, Dallas shot 44% FG and San Antonio shot 34.5% FG. Despite the home crowd's displeasure the officiating wasn't lopsided as both teams were called for 15 fouls each in the half. Howard had 18 points in the half and Duncan had 16 points. Dirk Nowitzki hit a jumper to open the 3rd quarter and give Dallas a 22 point lead. Diop picked up his 5th foul with 10 minutes remaining. A jumper by Parker with 10:30 left ended the Spurs' 8 1/2 minute field goal drought. Erick Dampier picked up his 4th foul with 6:35 to go and Diop came back into the game - and Diop played well in being active on the boards, playing defense, and tipping balls away. A 3-pointer by Brent Barry pulled San Antonio within 55-70 with 6:30 to go, but they were unable to get any closer than 15 points in the quarter. A layup by Marquis Daniels and a 3-pointer by Howard gave Dallas an 84-64 lead with 1 minute remaining. Dallas led 84-66 after 3. San Antonio shot a strong 10-14 FG in the quarter, but Dallas was able to keep pace as the Spurs only outscored the Mavs 28-26 in the 3rd quarter. Manu Ginobili had a layup to open the 4th quarter, but Dallas connected on consecutive layups to go up 88-68 with 10:30 remaining. Dallas led 94-74 with 8:20 to go and San Antonio scored the next 6 points, capped by a 3-pointer by Barry, to pull within 80-94 with 7:30 left. Devin Harris answered with a layup, Harris hit 2 free throws, Barry hit a jumper, and Harris hit a jumper. A bucket by Nowitzki gave Dallas a 102-82 lead with 4:35 remaining. Gregg Popovich pulled the plug 25 seconds later as Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili were subbed out and it was garbage time the rest of the way. Dallas won 113-91. The series is tied 1-1. Wow. It was a strong performance by Dallas and kudos to Avery Johnson for the lineup change which worked really well. Dallas was attacking the basket often and pushing the ball whenever possible. San Antonio only had a slight edge in out-scoring Dallas 46-40 in the paint. On the other hand, the Spurs did not play all that well and it was surprising to watch them self-destruct in the 2nd quarter. Even if you feel the calls are going against you (whether they really are or not), you have to keep focus on the game and not whine to the refs when you should be getting back on defense. Dallas was the aggressive team and it showed in having 12 more shots attempted and 19 points off of 14 San Antonio turnovers. Dallas was really clean with the ball and had just 6 turnovers (which San Antonio scored 5 points off of). The Spurs also hurt themselves by by hardly getting any offensive rebounds - just 6. Dallas out-rebounded San Antonio 39-34 including 10-6 offensive. Dallas shot 46.2% (36-78) FG including 6-13 3-pointers and San Antonio shot 45.5% (30-66) FG including 4-13 3-pointers. Dallas shot 35-43 FT and San Antonio shot 27-37 FT. The assist numbers remained ridiculously low as Dallas had 12 assists and San Antonio had 11 assists. Tim Duncan's free throw 12 seconds into the game was the Spurs' only lead of the game. Dallas is an amazing 21-0 this season when Josh Howard has 20 or more points - and have a 14 point win margin average in those 21 games. The network finally realized that this series is the one to watch (though it was more probably due to Detroit completely blowing out Cleveland in their first 2 games) and switched the prime-time game for Saturday to be game 3 of the Dallas-San Antonio series. So game 3 is now scheduled for 7 pm (Central) on ABC. The game changer of this game was the new starter - Devin Harris. His addition helped Dallas push the pace and attack the basket and the rest of the team followed his lead. He had 20 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and no turnovers in 33 minutes. Josh Howard didn't disappear this game as the team made a conscious effort to continue to go to him after the 1st quarter and he was the high man for Dallas with 27 points including 11-11 FT. He also had 9 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki had a solid outing with 21 points including 7-11 FG and 9 rebounds. He also had 3 steals. Jason Terry was fairly quiet and has yet to find a shooting rhythm (though his 5-13 FG was much better than he shot in game 1), but he did do some nice things in pushing the ball and running pick-and-rolls. Terry had 11 points, 3 assists, and 1 turnover in 26 minutes. Jerry Stackhouse continued to shoot well and 4 drive-and-kicks found him open in the corner for 3-pointers, of which he made 3. Stack had 19 points. But he continued to be a one-trick pony with just 1 rebound and no assists in 31 minutes [yes, he's been a key component in the 1st 2 games, but I'd like to see him have a more well rounded game]. The centers again struggled with fouls. This time DeSagana Diop had the better game - and surprisingly his best performance came after he had 5 fouls. Diop was active defensively and tipped the ball away from Tim Duncan a couple of times, active on the boards, and even dove to the floor to tip a loose ball to another Mav that kicked off a break. Diop had 3 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 fouls in 20 minutes. Erick Dampier had 3 rebounds and 5 fouls in 15 minutes. Avery Johnson elected to play without a true center for the few minutes when both of those players sat, except for garbage time. Marquis Daniels played much better in this game and had 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists in 23 minutes. Relegated to bench duty, Adrian Griffin only played 4 1/2 minutes and had 2 points and 2 rebounds. Tim Duncan was again a stud for San Antonio. He was the high man in points, rebounds, and assists with 28 points on 8-10 FG and 12-14 FT, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. He also had 4 blocks, but also turned the ball over 4 times. Tony Parker never got going as he struggles with injuries and had 15 points and 5 rebounds. He had just 1 assist and committed 4 turnovers in his 31 minutes. Manu Ginobili also continued to struggled as he shot just 4-11 FG including 1-5 FG in the 1st half. He had 13 points and 2 rebounds. Bruce Bowen's focus remains on defending Dirk Nowitzki. Bowen had 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists. Robert Horry started and had 2 points (didn't attempt a 3-pointer in this game) and 3 rebounds in 19 minutes. Michael Finley had 7 points and 4 rebounds and Brent Barry had 12 points off of the bench. Quotes [Johnson's, 1st 4 of Nowitzki's, Stackhouse's, 1st 2 of Harris', Popovich's, and Duncan's quotes transcribed by me.] Avery Johnson: "Well tonight obviously we're glad that we were able to pull this game out. We thought we played a game that was pretty much our style. We didn't get our pace the 1st game. We got a little bit better pace in the 2nd game. A lot of that had to do with Devin being out there. Just trying to save him up, especially for this round of the playoffs, hoping that we were fortunate enough to get a win the 1st round and we were fortunate enough to get a win in the 1st round against a tough Memphis team. But we had our eyes on this round for Devin to have him come out and play for us. And he played a game for us tonight. We weren't flawless tonight no matter what the stat sheet says or the final score. There are still some areas that we're still trying to clean up. We had a lot of malfunctions in game 1. Obviously we didn't have as many in game 2, but again, we're going to break this film down, try to get back to work. We're not 20 points better than the Spurs. They're the champions. They're still the champions. One win by a team in the Western Conference Semi-Finals doesn't mean that anything has been taken from them. We just want to grind it out this series. So we had some key contributors. Obviously Josh had a game for us. Stack has been pretty consistent. You know, Marquis even helped us tonight. We just had a little bit better flow tonight. I thought our timing was off in the 1st game and we seemed to have a little bit better timing tonight. But I know they're not going to play like this game 3." Johnson on defending Duncan: "Got to continue to do a better job. He's 8-10 from the field. He gets to the line quite a bit. And we just got to try to stay away from some of those cheap fouls. But I think Gana [Diop] and Damp are really battling Tim as best as they can. But they've just been getting some cheap fouls. So hopefully they can stay away from some of the cheap fouls and just keep trying to keep Tim working as much as we can. That's all that we can hope for." Johnson if Dallas is trying to be physical: "Yeah, we try to be and he pretty much scored on us again tonight. So that's a problem. But I think there are a lot of other problems that the Spurs put you in a bind. So we just got to just try to take away something. And Duncan is a handful." Johnson on rotating fresh players: "We didn't use our bench kind of like we had been. Wanted to get Marquis some more minutes tonight. So we kind of got a flow that we wanted and we needed some fresh bodies for that flow and that tempo and that pace. So again, it's just one game." Johnson on the 2nd quarter run: "It was pretty good. We moved the ball. Guys penetrated. They made the extra pass. As you know, we're not a big assist team, but we are a big ball movement, player movement team. The ball swung, unlike the 1st game. I could not even have a normal film session with our guys for after game 1 because it was so bad. We had to have 2. So hopefully now when we go back we can correct some of those mistakes and come out for game 3. But that's what happens when you're playing against a championship team. They force you in to a ton of mistakes and we just got to try to be tough-minded and strong and hopefully don't make as many mistakes." Johnson on penetration: "It was very important. It's something that we've talked about and we have guys that are pretty good penetrators. But I think game 1 we looked to stop and pull up more. And we did a decent job of trying to get to the basket a little bit more. We're trying to do the best we can. They got some guys that are on the perimeter that you got to try to play some defense and hopefully we can continue to do that." Johnson on not being down 0-2: "Yeah, I don't think you want to spot the Spurs 2 games on you. I don't know of any team that is that good enough against the Spurs. Again, we came in trying to get a defensive rating in the 1st game, we were unsuccessful. But more than us trying to play a certain style defensively in the 1st game, our offense was bad. And again, I told you that I messed up the last play of the game. You remember I told you that, Eddie [reporter]. Yeah, so." Johnson on Parker: "Tony's pretty hard to guard. I don't think they're's anybody really that can necessarily stay with him. We just feel that maybe we got a shot at having some guys that can do it every now and then. He's a tough cover and that's why he's an All-Star. That's why he's the player that he is. But I think you got to have guys that can try to match his quickness and you need shot blocking. And fortunately we think in certain situations we have both of those. But again, Tony's a tough cover." Dirk Nowitzki on penetration: "Our game plan was just to be more aggressive. I think in the 1st game, we didn't play well enough to win on both ends of the floor. On defense, we made a lot of mistakes. Offensively it kind of looked like we played tentative. You know, if you want to beat the world champs, they're not going to give it to you. You got to go out and take it and I think that's what we did tonight. We're aggressive. We wanted to get in the lane. We want to obviously get the pace up a little bit because we have so many good players. We've got great athletes in transition that can make plays. And obviously if they got their defense set, they are so good and long and tough. So we thought we were firing from all angles tonight. Everybody was playing well. It was a great team effort." Nowitzki on Howard: "He's been big for us. He's very athletic. he can get to the rim. He's a great finisher around the rim when he gets in there. He made a couple of in-between shots. He gives us another ball handler out there too that can run the pick-and-roll. So it's not only Jason out there. So he was big tonight and looking to hopefully get more consistency out of him for over a long period of time." Nowitzki: "Like I said, this is probably not going to be my best scoring series, but I got to play a good all-around game. I got to make stuff happen for myself. And when I score, when I take shots, I want to be efficient. I think I scored 20 points in the 1st game, but it wasn't efficient enough - took 20 shots to score 20 points and that wasn't great. So tonight I scored 20 and only took 11 shots, got to the foul line some. And you know really in the pick-and-roll, they're hugging me up so much that it was good our point guards were getting in the lane. So that's stuff that I got to do in this series. And I think we played really well as a team together and if we want to beat them, that's the kind of effort it takes every night. It's going to be hard, but we got to be consistent and play well over this whole series if we want to win." Nowitzki: "I think obviously game 1 was a tough loss or us. It was kind of encouraging because we plyed bad and watched the film, on both ends of the floor we weren't great, but we're still right there and had a chance to win. So I think if anything, we took some positives out of that loss and wanted to be more aggressive and really take it to them on both ends of the floor and I think that was our approach and it worked out pretty good." Nowitzki on Duncan: "Tim was great in the 1st game. We wanted to take the ball out of his hands and take the 3-pointer away. They're a great 3-point shooting team. We stayed home with the shooters and it worked well. We'll see what happens." Josh Howard: "It was a great game. We just wanted to cut down on our mistakes, get back to Mavs basketball - and that's running. It was a great finish for us. Me, I was the same old Josh. Whatever I can do to help my team win, if that means score 20 points, if that means get rebounds, then that is what I'll do." Howard: "I stayed aggressive all game. I didn't take a back seat, just seen an opportunity and took it. I get all my points on breaks, and playing defense - it's me just playing hard." Howard: "Me and Devin know our strengths and weaknesses. We like going to the basket. If they are going to keep putting their bigs on us then we are going to keep driving the lane." Howard: "Whatever I get that's open, I'm going to take it. Whenever my teammates find me, I try to knock down those shots." Howard on the physical game: "That's something we've been preaching. They do the same thing to us." Howard: "The biggest fear was going back home 0-2. We were in that position last year. That position last year was bad." Jason Terry: "This game was more our style, up-and-down. Now in game 3 we have to continue to be aggressive and look for more offense. Tonight we made a great adjustment and it paid off big for us. Now we just have to stay aggressive in game 3. We just have to play our system and get out and run." Terry on Dallas aggressiveness: "That's the way you have to play against these guys. If you play passive, they'll pounce." Terry on Nowitzki: "Dirk was big. He set picks that freed up guys. He rebounded. He did all he could do for us." Terry on Nowitzki: "It's not easy to get your shot when you have 2 guys bear-hugging [you] out there all night. He didn't get many looks, but he was strong." Jerry Stackhouse: "I think we just got out to a good start. Devin got into the game, was able to pressure Parker a little bit and JT [Terry] didn't have to expend so much energy on him. I just think we came out real focused and trying to obviously pick the tempo up a little bit. I think the last game the pace was a little more to the Spurs liking and I think tonight' game, the number-wise, were a little more to our liking." Stackhouse: "We knew they were going to make a run. I mean, we're in their building and they're the world champs. So we knew that they were going to make a run, but it's just a matter of us continuing to worry about ourselves and try to continue to put pressure on them. All that they make some runs, obviously we fell that we still had some runs in us too." Stackhouse on Harris: "Devin is the quickest guy that we have on the ball and defense as well - well, DA [Armstrong] might not like that - but he just puts a lot of pressure, not only defensively, but offensively, in the pick-and-roll, getting in and creating havoc. We're trying to make their bigs work. Obviously keep their 5s and 4s in the pick-and-roll as much as possible. And Devin did a good job of keeping pressure on them and making the right plays." Stackhouse: "I think our focus was still to let our bigs and our smalls handle the pick-and-roll and not let their shooters get open and get open looks because we're helping out. You know, we're the team that penetrates as much as San Antonio does and have such great penetrators like they have in Parker and Ginobili. We're going to give up occasional 3s and we did tonight, but for the most part, we stayed home and those shots that they made really didn't hurt us tonight." Stackhouse: "I'm just excited to be in the playoffs. I think it's a great opportunity for me, a great opportunity for our team. We've been building up to this. Me and Avery and Mark and all, we've all been on the same page. Just trying to see the big picture about this. You know obviously, during the regular season, he watched my minutes and make sure they were down. It's just that time and he allowed me to come out and play the way I'm capable of playing. We're just having fun. That's the most thing about it, if you noticed tonight's game, even more so than last game, we were having fun out there tonight. We were getting out there, playing the type of basketball we like to play. And everybody swinging the ball, moving the ball. I don't think, look at the numbers, nobody had more than 13 shots tonight. That's just great movement and sharing the ball." Stackhouse on his sweet spots: "Yeah, I got that same sweet spot. So, you know, in this game things come back around. And we're fortunate to come in here and get 1 win. But all of this has got to be kind of in the past, we've got to put it in the past and just focus on trying to just protect our home court. Nothing has happened in game 1 or game 2 is going to do us any good in game 3. So we just got to try to get a little bit of rest, stay focused, still work on some things. But our defense was pretty good tonight." Stackhouse on Howard: "He was aggressive. He was aggressive even though it didn't translate into him putting up the numbers in the 2nd half that he did in the 1st half. But he continued to attack. And I got in his ear at the half, I was like, 'I ain't going to let you off the hook this half.' We just wanted him to maintain that aggressive posture. Whenever he's like that and Dirk's doing what he's doing and JT's got his mind right and now Devin's back healthy and our big guys are blocking shots and rebounding for us and obviously our bench comes in and does what they're supposed to do, we're pretty tough." Stackhouse on if San Antonio was fatigued: "Obviously they had a little bit of a tougher road than we did in the 1st series and I think all of those things could hopefully become a factor later on in the series. You know, the 1st game, maybe we didn't do the things that we had to do to force a kind of fatigue on them by pushing the ball every opportunity we got. But I think we made a conscious effort for when we got the rebound and we didn't have to take the ball - even sometimes when we took the ball out of the basket - we rushed up the floor just to make them expend a little more energy and maybe wear them down in the late stages of the game." Devin Harris: "We definitely wanted to get more out of transition, try to get some easy buckets and try to force the tempo to our pace. More in game 1 we played at their pace and it reflected by the score." Harris on game 1: "We definitely had opportunities, but we let that one slip away, but we can't dwell on it now. We got to look to hold our home court when we go back." Devin Harris: "Most of game 1 we played at their pace. Tonight we got more transition baskets and got the score up around where we like it, in the high 90s and the 100s. You really have to have strong offense against a team with defense like this one has." Harris: "We're at our best when we're getting a lot of points in the paint, getting drives to the basket." Harris: "We feel like we can get penetration. Tony's one of the best penetrators in the league and a way to attack him is to make him play defense." Harris on Dallas' game plan: "Attack the basket, control the pace. If they weren't going to leave Dirk, make them pay." Harris: "Getting in the lane and creating havoc always is going to get their attention. When I get in the lane, it's obviously a higher percentage shot." Harris: "I found out at practice [Monday] that I would start. We talked about the possibility of using me more in this series. Avery told me that I would get into a rhythm after that 1st series and that I would play more minutes as I get more comfortable out there in this one. I was trying to get more transition buckets tonight and get the game to our pace." Gregg Popovich: "I though AJ's [Johnson] plan was great. I think the Mavs executed it very well. Their aggressiveness in the 1st half on the board, on defense, and transition was great and they basically buried us in the 1st half. 2nd half, we came back and played like I would expect our team to play, but the 1st half, Dallas deserves credit for the way they played and the way they got after it." Popovich on Harris and Howard: "They're aggressiveness was fantastic. I mean, obviously, they've got speed and quickness. They've got a lot of perimeter people that can play great D. They limit your ability to shoot shots. I thought Josh really took it to us to start the game on the offensive board. And when Devin came in, he really made penetration tough for us." Popovich on Harris: "Yeah, he's done this to us before. He's a very good basketball player." Popovich on Duncan: "Timmy was great. He's playing Tim Duncan playoff basketball. And unfortunately he didn't get a lot of help tonight. And that was because of the way Dallas played. I thought their defense was excellent. I thought they were great." Popovich on the refs: "Not at all. It had nothing to do with tonight. Everything tonight had to do with the way the Mavs played without a doubt." Popovich on if the rest before game 3 will help health-wise: "I hope so. I don't know. Nobody got hurt, everybody's fine." Popovich: "Everybody together say it: the Mavs played great and deserve credit. There are not excuses, no way around it. If I didn't think they played well, I'd say it. They kicked ass." Tim Duncan: "I think Avery made a great move in putting Devin in the game. Obviously he had a very solid game. Really got in the paint there and attacked us very well. Just another address we got to make for the next one. So a lot of credit to him for making that move." Duncan on Harris: "Tony is down half a step right now. He's got a contusion on his leg. But outside of that, Devin is very quick. He's solid. He's long for his size. He does a very good job on Tony. For speed-wise, I don't know of much of anybody that can keep up with Tony." Duncan on the 2nd quarter: "That was the change in the game right there, that one quarter. They really got out of us there. Jerry hit some shots in the corner, some 3s. The whistle was going crazy left and right. And that was kind of the difference in the game right there. They really jumped on us for whatever reason and they were getting to the basket and making plays at the rim. So they were getting easy ones. They were giving us tough ones when we did get it. And we got a couple of turnovers and they were able to transition them. So it all compounded itself in that 2nd quarter and really out out from us." Duncan on Howard: "Josh played great in the 1st game also. I think they made a concerted effort to really kind of get the ball to him a little more throughout the ball game. He was very good tonight and he's going to continue to be a big part of this series. I think they really got away from him the 2nd half the last game. And they really stuck with him this entire game. So he's going to be a big concern of ours. We're going to have to do a better job on him. I thought we did a good job on some guys and then we let Josh and Stack played a very good game. Those guys kind of got off more than they should." Duncan: "We were just fine with the pace of the game. The pace of the game wasn't our problem. We had too many turnovers for a short period of time there. They hit the offensive glass. Just a lot of things compounded, especially in that 2nd quarter, that got the game away from us. So the pace wasn't the problem. I thought we did a decent job with that. Defensively we were not very good and above anything else, that's our problem." Tony Parker: "We knew they were going to play aggressive. For whatever reason, we couldn't match it." Parker on the padding he wore on his legs for protection: "I feel like my legs are heavy. But they're doing a good job of packing the lanes. But every team is doing that against us. It's just a matter of us making shots." Manu Ginobili: "They were more aggressive than us. You can work on Xs and Os a lot. But at the end of the day that's where it counts. It looked like they wanted the game more than us." Bruce Bowen: "The Mavericks were aggressive tonight. They were hungry out there and did a good job with what they do tonight. You have to give credit where credit is due. They felt like they should have won game 1 and they came out very aggressive tonight." Bowen: "They were hungry and that shouldn't surprise us because they felt like they should have won game 1. We expected them to come out fighting and they did. We didn't answer." Bowen: "They have great shooters and are a very good offensive team. It is kind of like pick your poison when you are playing them." Bowen on game 3: "We need to play where we can't say 'I wish I would have played better tonight.' We need to do what we are capable of doing. We had a lapse out there tonight and we need to do a better job next game." Michael Finley: "[Howard] is really a match up problem because you have to go big on him because our best perimeter defender has to guard one of their bigs." Finley on Harris: "It gave [Dallas] speed in the starting lineup and gave them a different look. He did a good job out there tonight." Finley on 3 days off before game 3: "Rest is good, especially in the playoffs. We have a couple of guys banged up, so it will give them a couple days to rest and get better. It will give them a chance to get their confidence back so that we are ready for game 3." Finley on game 3 in Dallas as a Spur: "It will be different feeling, but I'll just be on the visitors' bench.
