Dirk Nowitzki was named to the All-NBA 2nd team, as voted on by the media. With 437 points including 47 1st place votes, Nowitzki had the most points for the 2nd Team players (Kevin Durant (OKC) had the fewest points for the 1st team with 492). It was the 11th straight year that Nowitzki has been named to an All-NBA team. 2 notes from the Lakers series: Kudos to Mark Cuban for not allowing fans to bring brooms into the arena for Game 4. And also kudos to the many fans that stayed throughout the blowout - Mavs fans have a tendency to leave early in blowouts, but the arena was still very full with 4 minutes left. The NBA suspended Andrew Bynum (LAL) for 5 games for his flagrant foul on J.J. Barea during Game 4 vs the Lakers and fined him $25,000 for taking off his jersey as he left the court. Bynum will serve his suspension at the start of the next regular season. Western Conference Finals Game 1: Oklahoma City at Dallas (May 17) After 8 days off, Dallas was finally back in action, while the Thunder hadn't had more than a day off since May 1 (playing every other day - which is also the case for the entire Dal-OKC series, so fatigue could be a factor if it ends up being a long series). It was an early preview of what the rest of the game was going to be like as Dirk Nowitzki scored 10 of Dallas' first 12 points and Kevin Durant scored 7 of Oklahoma City's first 8 points and Dallas led 12-8 with 7:20 left. Oklahoma City then went on a 13-4 run to go up 21-16 with 2:50 remaining as Dallas shot just 2-8 FG and committed 3 turnovers during the run. Dallas did pull within 3 points with 48 seconds left, but Oklahoma City scored the last 4 points of the quarter, including a quick-push after a Dallas miss that resulted in a layup by Durant with a fraction of a second left. Oklahoma City led 27-20 after 1. Dallas' rust showed through with their errant 3-point shooting in missing all 6 that they attempted. Oklahoma City shot 11-18 FG (including 2-3 3-pointers) and 3-4 FT and Dallas shot 8-19 FG and 4-4 FT. It was a sloppy 1st quarter as Oklahoma City had 6 turnovers and Dallas had 5 turnovers. Nowitzki had 10 points on a perfect 4-4 FG and 2-2 FT, but Durant one-upped him with 13 points on a perfect 5-5 FG and 2-2 FT. And the 2nd quarter brought out the second theme of the game as the whistles started blowing freely (with ref Joey Crawford wanting to be one of the names of the game). A 3-pointer by Daequan Cook gave Oklahoma City their largest lead at 32-23 with 10:45 to go. Brendan Haywood had a putback, Jason Terry nailed a 3-pointer, and, after not scoring since 8 minutes left in the 1st quarter, Nowitzki got back on the scoreboard with a layup off a pretty curl to pull Dallas within 30-32 with 9 minutes left. Serge Ibaka picked up his 3rd foul trying to guard Nowitzki with 8 minutes left and Nowitzki hit both free throws to tie the game. The game was again tied at 37-37 with 6:45 to go and Oklahoma City went on a 6-2 mini-run to take a 45-39 lead with 4:25 to go. Shawn Marion got popped in the nose (with no call) and had to leave for a short period with a bloody nose, but returned to action with cotton in his nose. Dallas' defense picked up and that kick-started their offense and the Mavs went on a 16-1 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Peja Stojakovic (his only bucket of the game), to take a 55-46 lead with 25 seconds remaining as Oklahoma City missed 6 straight shots. 2 free throws by Russell Westbrook capped the quarter scoring. Dallas led 55-48 at the half. Dallas out-scored Oklahoma City 35-21 in the 2nd quarter as Dallas shot 13-21 FG including 4-7 3-pointers (after 0-6 in the 1st) while Oklahoma City shot just 6-20 FG including 2-3 3-pointers (and had no 2nd chance points despite their poor shooting). Dallas shot 5-7 FT and Oklahoma City shot 7-8 FT in the quarter. Both teams did get their turnover problems under control as Oklahoma City had just 1 turnover while Dallas didn't have a turnover. Nowitzki had 11 points on 4-5 FG and 3-3 FT in the 2nd quarter to up his game total to 21 points (while Durant had just 4 points in the quarter after his strong 1st quarter). And the whistle were blowing even more (against both teams) in the 3rd quarter, in part because the Thunder defenders could do nothing with Nowitzki - Ibaka (a mere 30 seconds into the quarter), Nick Collison (8:57 left in the 3rd), and Thabo Sefolosha (2:29 3rd) all picked up their 4th foul in the quarter trying to guard Nowitzki. A 3-pointer by DeShawn Stevenson gave Dallas a 60-49 lead with 10:20 to go, but Oklahoma City managed to pull within 57-61 with 8:15 remaining, but Dallas continued to hold a single-digit lead over the next 3 minutes. Dallas used a 13-3 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Jason Kidd, to take a 79-65 lead with 3:35 left. Oklahoma City made a push and pulled within 9 points near the quarter's end, but Terry hit 2 free throws with 2 seconds left to give Dallas a 90-79 lead after 3 [though Cook's halfcourt heave at the buzzer was just off in hitting the back of the rim]. Dallas out-scored Oklahoma City 35-31 in the _long_ 3rd quarter. It was long due to the many whistles. Dallas shot 16-16 FT (with Nowitzki shooting 13-13 FT) and Oklahoma City shot 15-17 FT as both teams were called for 9 fouls each. Dallas shot 8-13 FG and 3-3 pointers and Oklahoma City shot 7-17 FG including 2-4 FT. Nowitzki shot 2-3 FG to go with his many free throws and had 17 points in the 3rd quarter and Durant had 10 points on 1-5 FG and 8-9 FT. Oklahoma City started the 1/2 foot shorter James Harden on Nowitzki, but he had no more luck defending Nowitzki and Oklahoma City continued to rotate defenders on Nowitzki to no effect. The Mavs played pick-and-roll with J.J. Barea and Nowitzki and, since Oklahoma City choose to stay with Nowitzki, Barea had a field day and scored 7 straight points to give Dallas a 99-83 lead with 9 minutes remaining (Barea ended up scoring 12 straight Dallas points). Dallas led 104-89 with 7 minutes to go and Oklahoma City made a push by scoring the next 10 points to pull within 104-99 with 4:20 left as Dallas missed 3 shots and had 2 turnovers. The teams traded jumpers and Marion got a putback on his own miss to give Dallas a 108-101 lead with 3:15 remaining. Marion committed his 6th foul with 2:55 remaining and Westbrook hit 1-2 FT. But Nowitzki was fouled on the other end and hit both free throws with 2:30 remaining (ending a stretch of 7:30 that Nowitzki did not score). Stevenson stripped a driving Durant and Terry was fouled on the break and his 2 free throws gave Dallas a 112-102 lead with 2:10 to go. Westbrook had a tough driving layup (only his 3rd field goal of the game), but Nowitzki answered with a Dirk jumper on the other end. But Oklahoma City wasn't ready to throw in the towel as, after a timeout, Durant drained a quick 3-pointer to pull the Thunder within 7 points at 107-114 with 1:35 left. But Nowitzki hit another jumper, despite good defense. Stevenson and Westbrook collided and Westbrook hit 1-2 FT. Kidd turned the ball over and Oklahoma City pushed the ball up and Westbrook was fouled. This time he hit both free throws to pull Oklahoma City within 110-116 with 48 seconds to go. Nowitzki mini-drove and, as the defense collapsed on him, he kicked out to Terry in the corner, who nailed the dagger 3-pointer with 29 seconds remaining. Harden missed on a 3-point attempt and Kendrick Perkins got a tip in with 20 seconds left. Nowitzki was intentionally fouled and hit both free throws. As Westbrook drove, Kidd knocked the ball away and Dallas ran the clock out. Dallas won 121-112. Dallas leads the series 1-0. As exciting as the Dirk Nowitzki-Kevin Durant show was, the many free throws clogged up the game. I know the Thunder fans are complaining about Nowitzki shooting 24 free throws, but some of the fouls committed on him were basic - at least 3 of them were using 2 hands on the back/rear of a post-player (and that rule has been in the books for longer than Durant has been in the league). And Oklahoma City actually attempted 7 more free throws than Dallas (9 more if you take out the intentional foul near the end). But, despite what Joey Crawford may think, the talk should be about the game. Nowitzki had 48 points and Durant had 40 points. But Nowitzki had more help with 24 points from Jason Terry and 21 from J.J. Barea, while Westbrook had 20 points, but shot just 3-15 FG, and Serge Ibaka had 17 points. Dallas' 3s helped them after their struggles in the 1st quarter as they shot 9-17 3-pointers in the last 3 quarters. For the game, Dallas shot 53.4% (39-73) FG including 9-23 3-pointers and Oklahoma City shot 47.2% (34-72) FG including 7-16 3-pointers. Dallas shot 34-36 FT and Oklahoma City shot 37-43 FT. Oklahoma City did have the rebounding edge at 35-33 including 11-8 offensive, but Oklahoma City only scored 11 points on their offensive rebounds while Dallas scored 14 points on theirs. Both teams got over their early turnover problems as Dallas had 5 turnovers in the 1st quarter and 8 turnovers the rest of the way and Oklahoma City had 6 turnovers in the 1st quarter and 7 turnovers the rest of the way. It was the first time in the playoffs that a Dallas opponent scored more than 100 points. Dallas has simply held homecourt for Game 1 and needs to do the same for Game 2. Dirk Nowitzki was a stud. Oklahoma City tried 6 different defenders on Nowitzki and none of them had any success, besides collecting fouls. Nowitzki had 48 points on 12-15 FG and 24-24 FT - that's just 3 missed shots in 41 minutes. The 24-24 FT set the NBA playoff record for most free throws made without a miss. He also had 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 blocks. Jason Terry had 24 points, including 7 in the 4th quarter. He shot 4-8 3-pointers. The surprise scorer for Dallas, like Game 4 vs the Lakers, was J.J. Barea. He scored 12 straight Dallas points in the 4th quarter (his only points in the quarter) as part of his 21 points. And it wasn't just his killer layups, as he also kicked in 2 3-pointers. Jason Kidd had just 3 points on 1-3 3-pointers (his only shots), but did have 11 assists and 3 steals - though he also had 3 turnovers. Shawn Marion showed grittiness in continuing to play with cotton stuffed up his injured nose (the injury occurred midway through the 2nd quarter) - x-rays after the game did show that it wasn't actually broken. He had 11 points and 7 rebounds in 27 minutes. Tyson Chandler had an up-and-down game - he played well when he was on the court, but (like in the Portland series) got in foul trouble and was limited to 25 minutes. He had 3 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Brendan Haywood was active in his time on the court and had 3 points on 1-1 FG and 1-2 FT and 3 rebounds in 23 minutes. DeShawn Stevenson only hit 1 shot, but it was a 3 and he did take a turn in guarding the taller Kevin Durant, though he spent most of his time on Russell Westbrook. Peja Stojakovic had a poor night and couldn't hit a shot, just 1-8 FG including 1-6 3-pointers, for 3 points in 21 minutes. Corey Brewer saw a bit of action [as I thought he might in this series with spot minutes defending Westbrook, Durant, and James Harden]. He had 2 points and a steal in 5 minutes (not that noticeable in this game). Kevin Durant carried the load for Oklahoma City with a team high 40 points on 10-18 FG and 18-19 FT, a team high 8 rebounds, and a team high 5 assists. I know that he has been bashed undeservably in previous games, but Russell Westbrook was the goat for this game. Every time he shot, I was happy as he was missing and not getting his teammates involved. Westbrook did have 20 points, but that was thanks to the line. He shot 14-18 FT, but just 3-15 FG and had just 3 assists [he is their point guard] to go with 4 turnovers in 38 minutes. Serge Ibaka had 17 points including 7-11 FG and 6 rebounds, but struggled mightily trying to guard Dirk Nowitzki - he collected 5 fouls and Nowitzki constantly scored on him. Starters Kendrick Perkins had 7 points including 3-4 FG and 5 rebounds in 28 minutes and Thabo Sefolosha (another Nowitzki victim) had 6 points on 2-2 3-pointers in 19 minutes. James Harden had 12 points and 4 assists in 36 minutes off the bench. The other 5 bench players combined for just 10 points. Nick Collison had 4 points and 5 rebounds (all offensive) in 17 minutes and Daequan Cook hit 2 3-pointers for 6 points in 8 minutes. Eric Maynor (0-1 FG, 10 minutes), Nazr Mohammed (0-1 FG, 5 minutes), and Nate Robinson (0-3 FG, 6 minutes) did not score. Quotes Rick Carlisle on Nowitzki: "He played great, obviously. We had a long layoff, but guys worked hard during that period. Dirk spends a lot of time working on his game, keeping himself ready. He got going early and I thought he did a good job of mixing in drives with jump shots. And getting to the bonus was big because that helped him get to the free throw line when we had a matchup advantage there." Carlisle on Oklahoma's many free throws: "Yeah, I know, they got there a lot. We're going to have to quit fouling them as much, obviously, is part of it. This series is, in large part, going to be about the free throw line. When Durant and Westbrook get there a lot, they win. So we were fortunate tonight. Look, we're going to have to play better. Westbrook had a very subpar game for him. I thought we did some good things against him, but I also thought he also just had an off game. We had a lot of loose possessions out there that we're going to have to clean up at both ends. I don't know how many times they drove and kicked it off and dunked the ball - you can't allow that to happen in a playoff series, it's just too easy. But I thought maybe the biggest key to the game was Marion coming back after he got his nose broken by Perkins. Because we need him out there to try and deal with Durant. He was bleeding, he had things stuck up his nose, it was a really difficult situation, but we desperately needed him out there and he got right back up and had those plugs or whatever he had his nose and got right back out there as soon as he could. So that was a big part of the game. And I thought Nowitzki was spectacular and I thought the bench played well - we had a lot of guys do good things." Carlisle on Terry and Barea: "They both played well, they were both aggressive. As the series goes on, we'll be seeing different coverage and different matchups, and those guys have got to be ready for anything. We rely on our bench a lot, we bring a lot of our better players off the bench, and we need those guys to play well, and we count on them." Carlisle on Nowitzki: "That's part of his greatness - that he's so good, in efforts to prevent him from getting the ball, he draws a lot of fouls. When you get to the bonus, he's going to make 24-24. That kind of number is possible, but there are very few guys in this league that can do that. Unfortunately, one of the few others that can is Durant. We've got to keep our guard up on him and Westbrook." Dirk Nowitzki: "Well, I was really looking to shoot early and really was able to get my rhythm. Made the first couple of shots and that is always big for a shooter and after that I just kept attacking. My teammates were feeding me and feeding me and had some matchups out there with some smaller guys and was able to take advantage." Nowitzki on the pick-and-roll with Barea: "That pick-n-roll was really working there in the 4th quarter. We ran a straight-side pick-and-roll or some high-screen-and-roll and he was able to get in the lane. When they went under, he knocked some big 3s today, so it was big. Our bench has been great for us all season long and they came through today." Nowitzki on Westbrook: "Well, he's so good in the open court and in transition, we as a team we have to get back and try to load up on him because he's so quick and explosive off the dribble and that's what we're trying to do. And Durant just kept making plays. It was a lot closer than we wanted in the 4th, but we came through with a big win." Nowitzki on his stats: "Well, it's a win. I mean really, that's all I care about. It was a tough Game 1. They kept coming, especially in the 4th quarter - I think we were up 10 and they kept making plays. Durant kept making tough shots. So they were always right there. And it was only like a 4 point game there with a couple of minutes to go. The main thing is we found a way to win, and that's what it's all about. Numbers don't mean anything if you lose." Nowitzki: "We know that we got to get better and we got to be sharper in Game 2 if we want to win." Nowitzki: "I thought both teams tried to play physical and there were a lot of fouls called. They shot even more free throws than we did. So there were just a lot of fouls being called. And players have to adjust." Jason Terry: "This was a big game for us and we needed to win this one after the long layoff. People wanted to know how we were going to respond and we started off a little slow and then in the 4th quarter it caught up with us a little bit. And we had a chance to put them away in the 4th, but our defense let us down a little bit, so we're going to watch the film. We have some areas of concern that we need to address but, again, we can't continue to give Westbrook 18 free throw attempts and Durant 19 free throw attempts. That's just entirely too many free throws. So we'll take a look at that and make adjustments." Terry: "What J.J. Barea did not only in the 2nd half but in the 4th quarter, he kind of took control of the game and getting a basket, assisting on a basket, or playing pick-and-roll basketball, which we like, and he kept the momentum going." Terry on Nowitzki: "Tremendous. And he saw matchups that he liked and he was knocking down his shots early and then you try to get aggressive defensively on him and then you put him on the free throw line. He's an outstanding free throw shooter. So they'll make an adjustment, but our motto is continue to do what we do and defensively we're going to have to pick it up a notch." Terry on Oklahoma City's high scoring: "They're going to continue to play that way. For us it was very key to get this one. Now the next one is very big." Jason Kidd on Barea: "He's playing at a high level and we all expect that. His confidence is high, and we're going to need him to play like this." Kidd on defending Westbrook: "We tried to keep him in front of us as much as possible. He's a talent. He puts a lot of pressure on you. We just tried to get back and show him a wall." Shawn Marion on returned to play after getting hit on the nose: "I was already sitting on the bench for about 10 or 15 minutes prior to that with 2 fouls, so I was like, 'I want to play.' This is the time. If it's broke, it's broke. If it's not, it's not. I just had to put some gauze in it, try to contain the bleeding, and then go out and play." Marion on Perkins hitting him on the nose: "It was accidental. It happens. It wasn't on purpose, not at all. We were just trying to scramble and get away from each other and he got a good one. That's part of the game. It's going to be a physical game. It's that time of the year. Got to get through it." Barea: "I'm glad it's working out. We've got our shooters around, so they're going to be hung up on the shooters. I've got Dirk setting the screen and they don't want to leave him. I've just got to keep being aggressive and playing my game. Some nights it's going to work, some nights not." Peja Stojakovic on Nowitzki: "The best performance I've ever seen. The best I've ever seen any of my teammates play." Scott Brooks: "I thought Dirk was pretty good tonight. He made some tough shots. I thought we defended him as close as we can, obviously a little too close. We put him on the line 24 times is too many times. We've got to do a better job on him. We definitely will come back and make some adjustments. We'll watch the film. He played well. Jason Terry played extremely well. And Barea came in and impacted the game with 21 points in 16 minutes. I thought we came out good in the 1st quarter, then the 2nd quarter, our offense went south on us pretty quickly. It's something that this team always had the incredible ability to bounce back, and that's what we'll expect the next game. We'll watch some film and practice tomorrow and come back better hopefully." Brooks on Nowitzki: "He had a good rhythm and got off to a good start. He was making shots and we were fouling his jump shots. 24 times to the free throw line, he's a terrific jump shooter, but that's just too many fouls and we've got to do a better job of guarding him - and we will. We will make some adjustments. He's a great player and he's one of the best I've ever seen at that position offensively. He scores just a variety of shots, and a lot of shots you don't think he has a chance to make it but he does." Brooks on Durant and Westbrook: "Kevin was good offensively. He had a nice rhythm going and he was attacking the basket. His jump shot was falling and he was making plays. I don't know how many assists he had tonight, but I felt he was passing the ball very well. Russell missed some shots. He's going to come back better. He missed some shots but he was attacking the basket. It's what we want Russell to do. Offensively I thought we were taking too many quick shots, we weren't having enough ball movement, we weren't moving that team at all in the 2nd quarter. Offensively we were fine. Defensively we've got to do a better job of stopping their players. Their starters, I don't know how many points they ended up with, but one guy had 48 points. Our starters played well but we've got to figure out ways to stop those 3 guys. They impacted the game." Brooks on Barea and Terry: "They came out and made some shots. Barea is a handful. He's a terrific player. He breaks the defense down with his toughness and playmaking ability. He was stepping back behind the pick and he made 2 3s tonight. He was good. Their bench, Terry comes in and Barea comes in, and we understand that's their strength of their team. We have to do a better job of guarding those players." Brooks on Nowitzki: "Hopefully he misses a shot now and then, but tonight he had a rhythm. He had a rhythm that I don't know if the ball even hit the rim." Kevin Durant on the many free throws in the game disrupting momentum: "It is hard. But both teams are very aggressive on the offensive end. Those guys did a great job of putting pressure on us. Of course, you get on the free throw line, it stops play. If you might be on a run, it'll stop your run. But it's a part of the game, you got to play through it. We've got to come with a better effort in the next game. I think we were down 14, but we fought back and made it a game. And we just got to keep pushing and stay positive and get ready for Game 2." Durant: "The pick-and-roll is something they did well tonight. Barea got in to the lane a few times. We'll just have to correct it. With Dirk, just got to make him - you can't put a jump shooter on the free throw line 24 times." Durant on why it's hard to guard Nowitzki: "He's a 7-foot jumper shooter. And he shoots one-legged fade-aways." Durant: "We were still in the game, like I said. We were down big in the 4th, but we still made it a 2-possession game with about 4 minutes left. They made more plays than we did. But like I said, we got to keep pushing, play a little harder, and just correct some mistakes." Durant on Nowitzki: "We can't get discouraged. He's going to make shots. He's going to make off-balanced shots with a hand in his face." Durant on defending Nowitzki: "After playing a physical series with Memphis, I think we were a little too physical with him. We have to make adjustments, be smarter. It's a learning experience, just feeling it out and seeing how we're going to play." Durant: "I could bet my whole house that Russell Westbrook won't go 3-15 again. You can quote me on that." Durant: "If you don't get stops, you don't get transition points. it's going to be tough to get transition points." Russell Westbrook: "It was a tough game. They shot the ball really well from the field, they made some tough shots. We'll be all right though." Westbrook on his misses: "It happens. Just going out and still staying positive. Just got to defend." Westbrook: "It's not about me or what I was doing, it's about our team and we have to continue to play." Westbrook: "We'll go watch the film and see what adjustments we're going to make and I'm pretty sure the coaches will have something for us." Westbrook on Barea: "He did a good job of getting into the paint. That's his game. And we're going to see what we can do as well." Westbrook: "We had a chance to win the game towards the end of the game but we just weren't able to close it out." James Harden: "I think we did a good job on their bench guys. Terry and Barea were hitting shots and making plays. Other than that, Dirk's going to get his touches so we have to limit everybody else." Harden on Barea: "Like I said he got to the paint. Just limit his paint opportunities. And Dirk is going to get his touches, but we have to limit everyone else and just tighten the paint." Ibaka on Nowitzki: "He was hot. It's tough.
