In a surprising change of usual draft luck, Dallas won the draw with
Phoenix and will draft #15 while Phoenix gets the #16 pick. Phoenix and
Minnesota (whose pick we get from the 1994 Sean Rooks trade) finished with
the same record of 40-42. Although tie-breakers determine the playoff
order, a draw determines the lottery order for teams with the same record.
Dallas decided not to re-sign assistant coach Lanny Van Eman (read fired).
This is part of a Don Nelson shake up of the coaching staff [since Ross
Perot tied his hands regarding Jim Cleamons]. Assistants Charlie Parker's
and Jack Nolan's futures in Dallas are uncertain. It is rumored that
Parker will get the ax and Nolan will move from the bench to be a Nelson
assistant of player personnel. Head assistant Butch Beard and
assistant/video coordinator Bob Salmi are expected to keep their jobs.
Look for Nelson to hire an assistant or two this summer with Cleamons'
"blessing".
In no surprise, Derek Harper said that next year will be his last year.
It turns out that Samaki Walker's foot was not just sprained, but also
fractured. He underwent surgery on the small stress fracture and will
take 4 to 6 weeks to recover.
Ed O'Bannon is considering undergoing surgery to clean out his knee.
And another for the "what if" file. In 1995, Dallas and Vancouver were in
serious discussions of a trade of Dallas' #12 and #24 picks for
Vancouver's #6 pick. Vancouver (an expansion team that year) turned down
the deal. Dallas ended up drafting Cherokee Parks at #12 and Loren Meyer
at #24 and Vancouver drafted Bryant Reeves at #6. [If that trade had
occurred, then the Montross debacle would have not occurred.]
