The Mavs signed Greg Buckner (1/18) and Damon Jones (1/15) to 2nd 10-day contracts. Look for Buckner to be signed for the rest of the season when this 10-day is up. Buckner is a strong defensive player. Don't know if they'll keep Jones or not. Gary Trent returned to action in the Washington game. Cedric Ceballos played in the Washington game despite suffering from the flu. Steve Nash still has been out - he may play in Saturday's game. Still no word as to when Robert Pack will return. On the verge of a milestone: With the win vs Washington, Don Nelson has 899 career wins as a coach. His current record is 899-735. Derek Harper accepted the Mavs' offer to join the front office as an all-purpose assistant to Terdema Ussery. All-Stars: Dirk Nowitzki and Hubert Davis have been selected to compete in the 3-point Shootout to take place February 12 in Golden State. Hubert is leading the league in 3-point shooting at 51.8% and Dirk is shooting 40.2%. Dirk was also selected for the 1998 Rookie team to compete in the Rookie game February 12 vs the 1999 Rookie team. The paperwork has been finalized and signed and Mark Cuban is one step away from owning the Mavs. The sale still has to be approved by the NBA Board of Governors and it is expected to pass with flying colors - maybe as early as All-Star weekend. Reports are that Cuban purchased as much as 70% of the team. Ross Perot is keeping a minority share. Cuban's first move as owner was a bad one. He fired long-time Reunion PA announcer Kevin McCarthy and replaced him with Billy Hayes. McCarthy had been with the team since the team's first year and was a class act on the PA. Hayes is an annoying cheerleader who doesn't know basketball. I can't tell you how many times I said "Just shut up" during the Portland game [though John might be able to]. It took him at least 4 tries to get Damon Stoudamire's name correct (called him "David" once) and his "Michael Fuuuuunnnnnley" has to go. Besides his general screw-ups (Technical foul Cedric Ceballos, that's his 3rd), not one mention of a nice assist has been made (ie, Dirk Nowitzki from Michael Finley). You don't know what you've got until it's gone. Bring back McCarthy!!! Portland at Dallas (January 15) Portland held a brief 12-11 lead with 4:40 left and Dallas scored the next 12 points to go up 24-12 with 48 seconds left. A tip-in by Scottie Pippen at the end of the quarter cut Dallas' lead to 26-17 after 1. Dallas led 38-28 with 6:30 remaining and went on an 18-7 run to go up 56-35 with 1:40 to go. Dallas led 61-43 at the half. Dallas shot 52.1% FG and Portland shot 38.1% FG. Michael Finley had 17 points. Dallas led 69-48 with 9 minutes left and Portland went on a 10-1 run to pull within 58-70 with 6:30 to go. Dallas led 83-71 after 3. Erick Strickland had 12 points in the quarter. Portland opened the 4th quarter with a 13-2 run to pull within 84-85 with 9 minutes to go. The teams traded baskets and Dallas then went on a 12-3 run, including 2 3-pointers by Hubert Davis, to go up 99-89 with 5 minutes remaining. Portland scored the next 7 points to pull within 96-99 with 4 minutes left, but Finley hit a 3-pointer to push the Mavs' lead up to 6 points. Dallas led 107-99 with 2:15 left on a 3-pointer by Davis. Portland rattled off the next 6 points and Dallas only led 107-105 with 55 seconds left. Davis hit 2 free throws with 44 seconds left. Pippen missed a shot and Finley made 2 free throws with 30 seconds left. Greg Anthony missed a 3-pointer and Greg Buckner shot 1-2 FT. A free throw by Strickland with 13 seconds left capped the scoring. Dallas won 113-105. The Mavs can't do things the easy way. Dallas led by 20+ points in the 1st half and nearly blew the lead in the 2nd half. But they hung on for the win and beat the team with the second best record in the league. In a bonehead move, Scottie Pippen gave the Mavs motivation (and the Mavs, especially new owner Mark Cuban, played it to the max) for this game by his comments about Michael Finley following Monday's game at Portland. Pippen on Finley: "He's an All-Star-caliber player, but look at his team's record. Who can't put up numbers for a team that is playing to outscore you, not playing to win? No knock on him as a player. He's a good player, but I wouldn't consider him an All-Star just because he's putting up numbers." Finley responded with 32 points, 6 rebounds, and 8 assists. 11 of his points came in the 4th quarter. Besides Finley's solid performance, the Mavs' had a number of heros for the game. Hubert Davis had 21 points including 6-9 FG and 4-5 3-pointers, 11 of his points including 3-3 3-pointers came in the 4th. Erick Strickland had 17 points and Cedric Ceballos continued his string of double-doubles (5th straight) with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists. Dirk Nowitzki struggled in the game and only had 11 points on 5-16 FG before fouling out. For the Blazers, Scottie Pippen had 22 points and 9 rebounds, Steve Smith had 19 points (15 of which came in the 2nd half) on 4-12 FG and 11-12 FT and 6 rebounds, and Greg Anthony had 18 points including 6-9 FG. Arvydas Sabonis only played 13 minutes (all in the 1st half) due to a viral infection. Rasheed Wallace was ejected from the game in the 3rd quarter after receiving his 2nd technical when he threw an elbow at Dirk Nowitzki (and, of course, Nowitzki was called for the foul). Quotes Don Nelson: "Michael Finley took the game over in the 4th quarter." Nelson: "What really iced the game for us was the 3-pointers by Hubert. That opened the game up when we were really struggling." Nelson: "Scottie has a lot to say about a lot of things. That's his prerogative. I've said all year that Mike is an All-Star. That's the first negative I've heard about Finley from another player. If [Finley] had something to prove tonight, I think he proved it." Michael Finley: "I heard about what [Pippen] said and that gave me a little incentive. I had incentive to prove to him and to the league that I belong in the All-Star game." Finley: "That comment from Scottie was basically an All-Star not having an All-Star season, and if a guy like me makes the team, that's one less spot for him." Finley: "I just had a little something to prove tonight, not only to him but to the rest of the league, that I definitely deserve to be there." Finley: "We knew if we got them from the jump, they had tired legs. The crowd was into it from the opening jump and we seemed to get adrenaline from that." Finley: "We had a lot of energy. Our guys were aggressive and it carried over throughout the game. We held strong and brought it on at the end." Finley: "Hubert is one of the better 3-point shooters in the league. When guys slack off on him, he's going to make them pay. He did that tonight." Hubert Davis: "It's great to have a great player like Michael Finley. He got the ball into the right people's hands and also scored himself. We needed to finish a game like this. It's a huge confidence boost for us." Erick Strickland: "Mike stepped up and showed what he's capable of. He deserves to be on the All-Star team." Strickland: "The key was getting on them early, especially with them coming off a back-to-back." Cedric Ceballos: "We jumped out on them early and we just understood that they were going to make that run. We pushed it and pushed it and put ourselves in a position to win the game. We were on fire and just kept the momentum going." Ceballos: "We knew they were going to make a run. They have depth and a lot of weapons. It was great for us to hold our composure and match their intensity." Ceballos: "Fin ain't mad. All this does is draw attention to him, so it's an added bonus for Mike. It just makes everyone around the league watch Mike to see if what Scottie said is true." Mike Dunleavy: "We dug a big hole, a 20-point hole. Our guys tried to work through it. We had to pitch a perfect game in the 2nd half to get that win. I give [Dallas] credit because they made the shots they needed to." Detlef Schrempf: "We got in at 4 in the morning, but that shouldn't be an excuse. In the 1st half our energy level was nonexistent." Scottie Pippen: "We didn't play well, we didn't deserve to win. We battled back into the game, we just didn't have enough left to finish." Pippen: "Mike is a good player. He just plays with a bad team." Houston led 18-17 with 5:10 left and closed the quarter with a 17-5 run to go up 35-22 after 1. Houston scored the first 5 points of the 2nd quarter to go up 40-22 with 10 minutes remaining. Houston lead in the teens the entire quarter and led 60-40 with 25 seconds to go on a 3-pointer by Bryce Drew. Houston led 60-42 at the half. Houston led by 13 to 20 points most of the 3rd. The Rockets led 90-75 with 48 seconds left and Cedric Ceballos scored the last 7 points of the quarter. Houston led 90-82 after 3. Ceballos scored Dallas' last 15 points of the 3rd and had 19 points in the quarter. Houston led 98-89 with 6:30 remaining and Dallas went on a 8-1 run to pull within 97-99 with 3:30 left. Steve Francis scored the next 4 points. Houston led 106-101 with 2 minutes to go and Houston scored the next 5 points to go up with 111-101 with a minute remaining. Dallas couldn't get within 8 points in the final minute. Houston won 121-111. The Mavs came out _flat_ for this game. I guess they enjoyed the Portland game so much, they wanted to replay it from Portland's point of view (go down big in the 1st half and try to rally back in the 2nd half). Only Michael Finley and Cedric Ceballos showed up for the Mavs. Finley had 31 points including 14-22 FG and 7 rebounds and Ceballos had a monster game with 39 points including 17-20 FT and 9 rebounds before fouling out late in the 4th quarter. If you take out Finley's and Ceballos' field goals, the rest of the Mavs shot only 26.7% FG (16-60). Dirk Nowitzki's mini-slump continued as he only had 10 points including 3-13 FG. Damon Jones was the only other Mav in double-figures with 10 points. For Houston, Steve Francis was the man and had 31 points including 14-15 FT, 6 rebounds, and 11 assists, but committed 7 turnovers. Their other rookie also played very well. Kenny Thomas had 20 points including 8-10 FT and 12 rebounds. Walt Williams chipped in 17 points including 7-10 FG and 5 rebounds. Quotes Rudy Tomjanovich: "Winning at home is great, but there is nothing like winning on the road. You get a big one out here, and you get on the plane, and you're all together. You stay together. You start to bond. You form something. That's what happened to us during our championship year. All the really big things, the coming together, happened on the road. I'm not comparing this to that, but I like the way we're handling ourselves. This winning on the road, man, it's just great." Tomjanovich: "It was a weird, wild game. Our rookies were great." Tomjanovich: "[Francis] was phenomenal. He's fearless. He [drove the lane] knowing their guys were gonna be there and got our other guys a couple of layups too. I would expect that growth to keep coming." Steve Francis: "That's probably one of the best 1st half's we played together as a unit. The 2nd half they threw a scramble type press that got us a little bit rattled and we turned the ball over. We made a lot of clutch free throws down the stretch. Instead of settling for jumpers we started going to the basket more toward the end of the game." Steve Francis: "I was hyper, angry, we were turning the ball over a lot. You can't turn it over against a rinky-dink scramble like that. They put on a little press and we got careless with it." Francis: "[Olajuwon] keeps telling me to be aggressive. I'm still feeling things out. When I have the ball, I'm thinking about creating for my teammates first. If the defense backs off me, then I have to take the shot and it was there tonight." Hakeem Olajuwon on Francis: "He's so talented. He should never have a bad game. Even if he doesn't score, he can still create things for the rest of us. A bad game for him would be a good game for most guys." Olajuwon: "It will take me a while before I get comfortable out there again. But I was still able to do some things. I'm just trying to fit in." Walt Williams: "It was fun. What have we got? 13 wins? We'll take them any way we can get them." Don Nelson: "You have to be able to expect the team to be ready to play without me having to give them a Knute Rockne speech every game. I didn't see this coming. Maybe after all these years I should have, but I didn't expect it." Nelson: "I didn't see it coming. With a great win, I thought we were going to be on a roll. I didn't believe that this team would not be ready." Nelson: "I'm very disappointed with our performance in the 1st half. I didn't expect it. I thought we were on a roll. I didn't believe this team would not be ready tonight." Nelson: "Why do we have to wait for the 2nd half? Why don't we start the game with that intensity?" Nelson: "The ups and downs of an NBA season, from the highs to the lows - the high point was our last game and the low point was tonight. I am very disappointed with our performance. It is hard to believe. Maybe after all these years, I should see it coming. I didn't believe that this team would not be ready tonight." Michael Finley: "It was very disappointing to come out tonight after the way we played against Portland. It kind of makes the Portland win worthless. We had no energy, no effort from the starters or the guys off the bench. It was contagious at a point. Everyone needs to look at themselves individually in the mirror and question themselves if they really put out 110% effort. I'm man enough to say I didn't tonight." Finley on the 1st half: "No energy, no effort. I don't know who to blame." Finley: "To come out the way we played against Portland and to come out the way we played the 1st half is very disappointing." Finley: "Cedric had a big game. If it wasn't for him, this game could have been a lot uglier than it was. He got to a point in the 3rd quarter where he just carried the team offensively." A 3-pointer by Chris Whitney with 27 seconds to go to cut Dallas' lead down to 23-17 after 1. Dallas held a 2 to 7 point lead for most of the 2nd quarter. Dallas led 44-35 with 4:15 lead and Washington scored the next 6 points. Jahidi White hit a short jumper with 10 seconds left to cut Dallas' lead down to 48-47 at the half. Tracy Murray hit a 3-pointer to open the 3rd and give Washington a 50-48 lead. The game was tied at 54-54 with 10 minutes remaining and Dallas went on a 16-4 run to go up 70-58 with 6:22 left. Dallas led 70-63 with 4:30 to go and stormed ahead by scoring the next 9 points. Dallas led 82-65 after 3. Michael Finley converted the 3-point play to open the 4th and gave Dallas a 20 point lead. The Mavs never looked back and won comfortably. Dallas won 104-86. With the announcement of Michael Jordan becoming a minority owner and president of basketball operations, I was surprised the Washington played as poorly as they did. It didn't help that they were missing Mitch Richmond (on IR) and rookie Richard Hamilton (death in family), but the Wizards did not look good. It helped the Mavs that Gary Trent returned to action after missing 6 games and Dirk Nowitzki broke out of his mini-slump. Trent had 13 points including 6-9 FG in 23 minutes and Nowitzki had 22 points including 5-8 3-pointers (including the rare 4-point play) and 9 rebounds. And, rarities of rarities, Shawn Bradley was awesome in this game [what did you say to him before the game, Mark???] Bradley had his best game of the season with 20 points including 9-10 FG, 6 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Michael Finley led the team in scoring with 23 points and had 6 rebounds and 9 assists. Cedric Ceballos contributed 17 points and 7 rebounds. For Washington, Jahidi White led the charge back in the 2nd quarter and had 16 points and 15 rebounds. Lamond Murray (17 points) and Chris Whitney (12 points) were the only other Wizards in double-figures. Juwan Howard had a terrible game with 9 points including 2-9 FG, 5 rebounds, and 7 turnovers. Quotes Don Nelson: "It was a great day for the Wizards. Just not on the court." Nelson: "I feel sorry for Gar. They've been almost as undermanned as we've been all year. It was a great day for the Wizards in a lot of ways but not on the court." Cedric Ceballos: "We had the fear that they were going to come out with great momentum. But eventually they started making mistakes and we took advantage of that. Juwan was playing very aggressive, a bit too aggressive." Ceballos: "We knew because of MJ's situation here it was going to be some hype and some momentum pushing their way, and we fed into that. We had a fear that they were going to come out with great momentum knowing that they had that done, but it fueled us. It put them into a little aggressive mode, but aggressiveness turned into mistakes, and that's when we took advantage of it." Ceballos: "Richmond is known to put 6 to 10 points up real quick and get you back in the game, or take over the lead. Not having Richmond for his aggressiveness to take over - when they had chances to do so - they couldn't do it, because nobody had the initiative to take the ball and take advantage of it." Gary Trent: "I'm happy to be back playing and being in rhythm. I just wanted to get out there and play with the team, and hopefully could contribute somehow." Dirk Nowitzki: "If we would have just had a good 1st half against Houston, we would have won 4 in a row right now. But this was a good start to another streak." Gar Heard: "I never anticipated the game would end this way. We're short-handed, but tired to play hard." Heard: "I never anticipated that the game would end this way. We have to have an effort every night no matter who is here, the president or whoever." [Bill Clinton attended the game.] Heard: "My job is to get these guys ready to play. And Mike said during the press conference that he wants to help us get the most out of the guys we have. It's unfortunate we didn't have our guys on the court who could score. We were shorthanded and the guys really tried to play hard." Juwan Howard: "It hurts, especially on a day like this. It's been a great day, something great for the city, this franchise. Then we have to top it off and spoil the occasion. Hopefully, we can find a way to turn this around. It's embarrassing." Michael Smith: "We just went out there and played our game. We know that Michael is going to expect a lot from us, but I don't think anybody was worried about that tonight. Things just haven't been bouncing our way lately. Everybody has their bad nights. But you can't have too many bad games in this league. If you do, you'll get blown out every night."
