Dallas has been out-rebounded in each game they have played. The opponents are out-rebounding Dallas an average of 54.3 to 39.3 including 18.5 to 9.7 offensively. Gary Trent probably won't be back for another two weeks. The Mavs activated Bruno Sundov on Thursday and placed Leon Smith on IR with a strained lower back. Newest Mav Leon Smith was behind the bench in street clothes for the first time at the Mavs @ Dallas game. Leon Smith: "I'm very anxious to play. I learned a lot of post moves while working with coach Vandeweghe." Smith said he "will follow along with" the club's wishes "as long as I'm included in them." Don Nelson: "Leon is not ready for the NBA, but I'm glad to hear that he thinks he is. The one thing he's right about is, he's got great skills. [But] I hadn't planned on Leon playing this year." Dallas at LA Lakers (Nov. 7) Behind Michael Finley's 8 points, the Mavs stayed in the game despite the dominance of Shaquille O'Neal and the Lakers led 15-14 with 5:20 left. The Lakers then scored then next 12 points as the Mavs went scoreless over 4 minutes. The Lakers led 29-16 after 1. O'Neal had 10 points and 8 rebounds, Glen Rice had 10 points including 2 3-pointers and Finley had 10 points. Dallas scored the first 8 points of the 2nd quarter to pull within 5 at 29-24 with 10:20 remaining (and O'Neal on the bench). The Lakers slowly built the lead back up and led by 12 points at 40-28 with 6:45 left and at 46-36 with 4:20 left. Dallas went on an 11-1 run as the Mavs finally started running to pull within 43-47 with 1:20 to go, but Tyronn Lue nailed a 3-pointer to end the run and the Lakers led 52-45 at the half. The Lakers shot 48.9% (22-45) FG and Dallas shot 44.7% (17-38) FG. O'Neal had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Rice had 12 points, and Finley had 22 points. The Mavs were still in the game at 61-67 with 4 minutes left when they fell apart. The Lakers went on a 14-3 run to go up by 17 and led 81-66 after 3. The Lakers pushed their lead up to 21 at 87-66 with 10 minutes left, but the Mavs weren't done. Dallas went on a 12-1 run and LA only led 88-78 with 6:30 left. The Lakers then scored 4 points and the Mavs two and the Mavs started playing Hack-a-Shaq with 5 minutes left and the Lakers up 92-80. And it was working. O'Neal missed two free throws and Rick Hughes got a layup. O'Neal hit 1-1 free throws and Hughes hit 1-1 free throws. O'Neal hit 1-1 free throws, but the Mavs messed up and Rick Fox got the offensive rebound and was fouled - he hit both free throws to put the Lakers up 96-83 with 4 minutes left. The Mavs missed and O'Neal hit 1-1 free throws. Dirk Nowitzki hit a 3-pointer and O'Neal hit 2 free throws. While Nowitzki was hitting 2 free throws, Phil Jackson pulled O'Neal from the game - it was only an 11 point led for LA with 3:15 left. However, the Mavs could not make a finally rally even with O'Neal out and didn't cut the Laker's led under 10 points until less than a minute remained. The Lakers won 105-97. The Lakers took the Mavs out of their running game and the Mavs' half court game was ineffective. The Mavs had their big rally when they were running - but it is hard to run when your opponent is shooting well and you can't rebound worth a lick. Shaquille O'Neal had a monster game with 30 points on 10-14 FG and 10-23 FT and 20 rebounds. Think what you will about Hack-a-Shaq, but it was working in this game. O'Neal shot 5-10 FT during the Hack-a-Shaq. When the best player on the court is pulled with only an 11 point lead and over 3 minutes left in game, it is a good thing for the opponent. Michael Finley had a great 1st half, but was almost invisible in the 2nd with only 9 points. Dirk Nowitzki picked up Finley's slack and had 16 points in the 4th quarter. Quotes: Phil Jackson on Hack-a-Shaq [and showing the year off did not hurt his ability to whine]: "Don Nelson made the game interesting. You can always count on Nellie to screw up a game. This guy is on the rules committee, and he finds more ways to bend the rules than Richard Nixon did during his presidency." Jackson said. "Shaq got plenty of attempts to practice his free throws." Jackson: "We weathered the storm, but it was not pretty. I liked the way we played for the most part." Shaquille O'Neal on Hack-a-Shaq: "I thought that was bull[beep]. He always does that, but that's OK." Derek Fisher: "Thank goodness, we have a lot of individual ability. We're still finding a way of getting the ball in the basket. We got the big fella in the middle, which definitely makes life a lot easier." Glen Rice: "For the most part, I think after losing to Portland, coming back to win at home is important to us. Early on when we built a lead, we had a lot of early energy. We established that we were ready to play tonight." Don Nelson on Hack-a-Shaq: "Being the competitor [O'Neal] is, he did what he was supposed to do. He made me pay the price a few times by making both free throws. That's part of the risk that you take, and I knew he was going to do that occasionally. We exchanged glances a few times, and that was kind of fun. I'm very fond of him. He played for me [at the 1994 World Championships], and I love the guy to death. But we don't have an answer for him on this team, that's for sure. The only weakness the guy has is free throw shooting, at least I haven't found any other ones. So that's about the only area I can attack. I don't want to beat him up, I do want him to know he's going to shoot a lot of free throws against us." Nelson: "The guy shoots 57 from the field and 35 from the line. It makes sense. That's the only weakness he has that I've seen. As a coach, you have to attack what you feel is a weakness so that's what we did. I have no answer for him on my team. I don't know how to guard him. We can't guard him. He dominates us. That's a strategy I could use and I did." Nelson: "Being the competitor he is, he did what he was supposed to do and made me pay the price by making some free throws. That's the risk you have to take. It's just a strategy. I don't want to beat him up or anything." Nelson on why he hadn't used Hack-a-Shaq in 4 years: "I've never been close enough. We've always been down 20 points." Nelson: "I don't have a way to get [Bradley] to play better against Shaq. That's just a mismatch, but it's not like other teams don't have the same problems." Shawn Bradley: "Shaquille is big, he's strong, he's good and he presents challenges for anyone. We tried a lot of different looks with him and it seemed to work a ton. Sometimes you have to concede him a certain number of points." Strickland nailed another 3 at the end of the quarter and the Lakers led 25-22 after 1. The Lakers still had small leads in the 2nd quarter and led 35-34 with 6 minutes left. The Lakers slowly built their lead up to 50-41 with 2 minutes left. Down by 7 with 1:30 left, the Mavs played Hack-a-Shaq. Shaquille O'Neal missed 2 free throws and Michael Finley drained a 3-pointers. O'Neal missed 2 free throws, but the Mavs screwed up and Rick Fox got the rebound and a layup. Steve Nash turned the ball over and Ron Harper got a layup on the break. Finley hit the technical on illegal D and Cedric Ceballos had the layup to cap the scoring with 30 seconds left as O'Neal missed two more free throws and the teams traded misses. The Lakers led 54-49 at the half. O'Neal shot 1-10 FT in the half [and reportedly assaulted the TV in the visitors locker room during halftime]. The Lakers were up 58-54 with 9:30 left and started rolling as the Mavs could do nothing right and the Lakers were clicking as a team. The Lakers scored 16 consecutive points before Nash finally scored for Dallas with a 3-pointer. The Lakers led comfortably after 3 at 88-71. The Lakers pushed their lead into the 20s in the 4th and coasted to the victory in garbage time. LA won 123-101. Gag. Well, they played one half of good basketball, but that 3rd quarter run was ugly. The Mavs just have no answer for Shaquille O'Neal (who had 27 points on 12-16 FG and 3-14 FT) - Nelson even tried putting 6-3 Erick Strickland on him midway through the 4th [O'Neal got an easy two over Strick, but the next time down the court Strick drew the offensive foul on O'Neal]. The Mavs still could not run against the Lakers and they couldn't defend, and they could score - a good recipe for a blowout. The Lakers shot a blistering 62.4% (53-85) FG and Dallas shot a cold 41.8% (38-91) FG. Steve Nash finally found his shooting touch and had 17 points including 6-9 FG - 9 of which came in the 3rd quarter after the Lakers had their 18 point lead. Too bad the rest of the his game really stunk up the joint. He had 6 turnovers, 3 of which were _really_ ugly. Quotes Phil Jackson said, "I don't know if I'll comment on [O'Neal's free throw shooting] publicly because I know it's very disarming and stressing in some sense. It was a very frustrating first half, what, 1-for-10? I know that's embarrassing for him, so I'd just as soon not comment on it." Jackson: "The bench played well enough. Fox and Ty Lue, some of the other guys off the bench played real well." Shaquille O'Neal: "I am struggling from the line, but I find a way to come in and do my thing every night. I'm going to start hitting them. I'm not worried." O'Neal: "My job is to step up and hit [free throws]. If I do, I'm going to start averaging 37, 47, 57. I'm the nastiest big man in the league. Right now I'm upset at my play because because I know I'm better than this. I'm going to start getting ticked off and start stepping up and making them." O'Neal: "I'm always hitting them in practice. They just don't fall in the game. I'm probably just trying too hard to shut you guys up. That's all you seem to talk about." O'Neal "I didn't play a real good game, especially from the line. But I did other things well." O'Neal: "I am struggling from the line, but I found a way to come in and get my team a win." O'Neal: "No matter what B.S. defense [Nelson] throws, I'm still getting 30 on all of his centers, all of the time, no matter what they do. I guess I'm just going to have to start averaging 47 now. I just have to step up. For me, I always hit them in practice. The frustrating thing for me, they just don't fall in games. I'm going to get real [upset], [but] I won't ever quit, I won't ever get frustrated. I'm just going to elevate that part of my game." O'Neal: "Throughout my career, I've been known for hitting one [of two]. And right now, I'm not hitting any at all." O'Neal: "Right now, I'm real upset, especially with my play. Because I know I'm better than this." Rick Fox: "Until he starts to hit half of his foul shots, they're going to keep trying to do this, keep fouling him. So I feel for him." Ron Harper: "They play a frustrating style, all that fouling Shaq. That's not basketball. Late in the game, maybe. But not before the half, that's ugly basketball." Glen Rice: "In the [triangle] offense we are running, there are shots there for everyone. You just have to step up and take them." Don Nelson: "I think they tried. I just don't think we believe in ourselves yet. I think when the mighty Lakers come into town, for whatever reason, I don't think enough of them really believe we can beat them. Until we do, we're never going to." Nelson: "I feel our team is better than it has been. But [the Lakers] can still dominate and toy with us." Nelson: "I really felt we had a good shot at this one tonight, and we needed to play even better than we did the 1st half. We were there the 1st half, and I didn't think we played that well. Anyway, it's just another game. It's 18 now that they've beaten us, and I think it's as much mental with a lot of our players as it is physical." Nelson on Jackson's previous comments about Nelson bending the rules: "I think all of us coaches bend the rules if we can, but I'm not even bending them in this case. If he doesn't want Shaq fouled, shoot a better percentage. I wouldn't foul Shaq if he was at 70 percent, or even 60." Michael Finley: "Sunday night, Shaq beat us and tonight, the rest of the team beat us. Erick Strickland on guarding O'Neal in the 4th: "I did the best I could to try to just put a little leverage on him when I could. I thought maybe I could get a charge or two on him, with him being overly aggressive on me." And I thought the Lakers game was ugly. Miami opened the game by scoring the first 9 points and never looked back. The Mavs did wake up and play a little and pulled within 3 at 20-23 with 4:15 left on a 3-pointer by Erick Strickland, but the Heat slowly built their lead back up and led 43-32 after 1. Behind Jamal Mashburn's 12 points, the Heat took a 47-38 lead and extended it to 66-42 with 5 minutes left. Miami led comfortably at 74-50 at the half. Mashburn had 24 points in the half. Miami shot 61% FG in the half. The Mavs were not able to make a true run the rest of the game. Miami led 97-76 after 3 and won 128-105. If you want to see how to have good spacing, this was a good game to look at. As soon as the Mavs doubled on Alonzo Mourning, the rest of the Heat spread out and the Heat's passing would find the open man. Miami shot 55.7% (49-88) FG and Dallas shot 41.2% (40-97) FG. The Mavs were able to use their running game, but for some strange reason were settling mostly for outside shots instead of taking it inside. Jamal Mashburn had fun beating up on his former team and had 34 points including 13-19 FG. The only bright spot for Dallas was Dirk Nowitzki. Dirk was taking it strong to the basket and had a solid game with 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. There were a couple of interesting points during garbage time. Shawn Bradley hit the 3rd 3-pointer of his career [as he saw that his sub was waiting to come in]. Anthony Carter had some sweet passes that resulted in a some awesome dunks. Quotes Pat Riley: "From the get-go, our offense took advantage of switches, traps and mismatches. We got easy layups and post-up points." Riley: "If we can continue to create opportunities by rebounding and running, we will be all right. We will continue to try and run. But some teams will not let you. We will be fine if we can execute against the teams who will not let us run." Riley: "Our guys really moved the ball well. Now, let's not get too full of ourselves." Jamal Mashburn: "I've been hotter and scored less points. When you play basketball and you're hot, you try to experiment and do certain things. I didn't feel that I was in a zone. I was just fortunate." Mashburn on facing Don Nelson: "It was no big issue for me. It's not about being with Don, it was about not being with Jimmy Jackson and Jason Kidd. I'm thankful to Don for putting me in a situation where the Heat have a chance to be in the playoffs and win a championship." Mashburn: "I'm kind of thankful for Don Nelson, putting me on a team capable of winning a championship. In some ways, he did put me in a good situation." Tim Hardaway: "You've seen us as a slow-down team the last 3 to 4 years. It's good to know we can score and play an up-tempo if we have to." Hardaway: "I love this - it's like the old Pat Riley days with the Lakers. When you run like that, it makes you work even harder on the defensive end." P.J. Brown: "It feels good. You don't have to run half-court offense all the time. We don't have to struggle for baskets. Last year, there were times when we struggled for points. A couple of rule changes have made the game a lot more fun." Brown: "The last couple of years, we looked directly for Tim after getting a rebound. Now if Tim is blocked out, we look for Alonzo or Mash, or whomever is open." Brown: "I'm interested to see what kind of numbers Mash can put up if he stays healthy all 82 games. This is the tip of the iceberg." Voshon Lenard: "I think we're catching everyone off guard. You can see it in their faces, they're not expecting us to run. They have this look, like they expect us to be a halfcourt team, and before you know it, they're down 20." Don Nelson: "They made every shot and took advantage of every mistake. I didn't like our game plan. I'll take the blame for that." Nelson: "I didn't like our game plan, and I'm personally blamed for the game plan. I was so afraid of Alonzo that I was double-teaming him too early, and it got us all spaced out [defensively], and they just toyed with us." Nelson: "[The strategy] was a mistake." Nelson: "We gave them opportunities and I'll take a lot of the blame on that, playing all the double teams. They made every shot and took advantage of every mistake. They took advantage of the way we were playing." Nelson: "We got our butts beat tonight, and we got it beat good by an excellent team. I don't know if we could have beaten them if we were at our best." Nelson: "It's painful to watch Michael Finley play. All he seems to have right now is his jump shot. We need him to be a dominant player, and he's playing on one leg." Michael Finley on his injured heel: "It's no worse than what it was [against LA]. It's actually better." Finley: "I don't know why he took me out tonight. If anything, I was fine tonight." Dirk Nowitzki [making some of us feel old]: "[Mashburn is] a great player who I enjoyed watching when I was young. He showed it tonight." Nowitzki: "It was a pretty good game. Still I've got to finish off, though. I missed two layups."
