Injury update Robert Pack has been practicing with the team and is expected to return to action for tonight's game vs Utah. Shawn Bradley was injured when he took a charge late in the Detroit game. He missed the Toronto and Indiana games due to blurred vision. Grant Hill drove down the lane and collide with Bradley. Hill was called for the offensive foul for clearing out with his arm (the replay did show that it was the correct call, but my jaw is still sore from hanging open after the ref made the call - foul on Hill (who the refs usually favor) and not on Bradley (who is often in foul trouble)). Bradley left the game after going down hard and did not return to the court. Bradley is expect to be available for tonight's game vs Utah. Dennis Rodman missed the Detroit game due to serving his 1 game suspension for failing to leave the court in a timely manner following his ejection from the Milwaukee game. Detroit at Dallas (Feb. 17) Dallas took an early 7-2 lead with 10:20 left and Detroit then went on an 18-2 run to go up 20-9 with 6:30 remaining. Detroit led 29-17 with 3:20 left and Dallas went on a 10-2 run, but a 3-pointer by Terry Mills gave Detroit a 34-27 lead after 1. Dallas pulled within 2 points at 32-34 with 11 minutes left and Detroit answered with a 10-2 run to go up 44-34 with 8 minutes to go. Detroit led 62-55 at the half. Grant Hill had 18 points, Jerry Stackhouse had 16 points, and Michael Finley had 15 points in the half. Lindsey Hunter opened the 3rd quarter with a jumper and then Dallas went on a 13-3 run to take a 68-67 lead with 6:30 to go. Detroit responded with a 13-2 run to go up 80-70 1:40 remaining. The face of the game then completely changed as Erick Strickland hit a 3-pointer and Dirk Nowitzki nailed 2 3-pointers to close the quarter. Detroit led 80-79 after 3. It continued to rain in Reunion as Steve Nash opened the 4th with a 3-pointer. The game stayed close and Dallas led 93-91 with 5 minutes left as Hunter hit a 3-pointer. Nowitzki answered with a 3. Michael Curry drove for the layup and then Dallas scored the next 10 points to take a commanding 106-93 lead with a minute remaining. Dallas won 106-97. It was amazing to see how completely the game changed with those 3-pointers at the end of the 3rd. The Mavs looked terrible for 3 quarters minus a minute (my dad even joked that he might leave at halftime (he was going out of town the next day)). Then it started raining in Reunion and the Mavs found the energy they had been lacking. In addition to his offensive output, Dirk Nowitzki was a monster on the boards, going up aggressively in traffic and snagging two key rebounds in the last 4 minutes. Dallas out-rebounded Detroit 11-4 in the 4th quarter which resulted in the rare rebounding edge for the game (46-43). Dirk finished with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists. Steve Nash led the charge back with 14 of his 18 points (on 8-11 FG) coming in the 4th quarter. Cedric Ceballos and Michael Finley both had 21 points. Finley also had 7 rebounds. And Erick Strickland also had a nice game with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists. Grant Hill and Jerry Stackhouse had strong games in the 1st half, but virtually disappeared in the 2nd half. Hill only had 2 points in the 2nd half and Stackhouse only had 6. Hill finished with 20 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 blocks. Stackhouse had 22 points. Jerome Williams was his usual monster on the boards with 17 and also scored 11 points. Funny of the night: On the jumbo tron facing where I was seated, the visiting roster listed "-1" as a starter. I pointed it out to my dad and jokingly asked "Who's -1?" and "Rodman's going to be jealous." My dad cracked me up with "It must be Eric Montross." Quotes Don Nelson: "That was a big game for us because, as you know, we have lost 2 in a row and things are basically going to get harder. Not that this wasn't hard. We gave everything we had tonight. And came up a winner. I'm thankful for that and I am very pleased with the performance." Nelson: "Steve Nash stepped up and played another sensational game. Actually, he's been pretty good for a while now. I think you take his first game back, and he was very mediocre. He's been good to very good since then. He seems to be more confident." Steve Nash: "Depending on the style of game, depending on how many minutes I play, some nights they need me like that. I was just fortunate that coach kept coming to me. It paid off. It was fun." Nash: "Eventually we'll be a better team with Dennis, no question. But we should be a better team without him right now, because we played 45 games before he even got here. Our last 2 losses are through no fault of Dennis. Everyone needs to give him a chance." Nash: "You can't say after 2 games that he's hurt the team. Even with him here we would have won this game. It's a coincidence and nothing more should be made of it." Michael Finley on Stackhouse and Hill only having 8 points in the 2nd half: "That was the key to the game. We wanted to limit their touches. They had a lot of one-on-one situations in the 1st half, but in the 2nd half we doubled them some and mixed it up." Finley on the rebounding edge: "A lot of guys took it upon themselves to pick it up in those areas. Dennis is a great rebounder so we had to pick it up." Finley: "We knew what [Rodman] brought to our team and without him everybody had to take it up a notch. From rebounding to outscrapping and doing all the little things. I think everybody took it upon themselves to do that tonight. It was evident with Erick's rebounds and Dirk's rebounds and ultimately we all rebounded as a team and we got a win from it." Dirk Nowitzki: "I think we all knew we had to take it to the next level rebounding-wise. That's about it. We had 5 guys in the paint battling for balls and that's what we've got to have even when Dennis is there." Cedric Ceballos: "I know what you're going to ask. It's not like we've never won without him, but this didn't have anything to do with Dennis not being here. This was just the Mavericks with a little less hair color." Alvin Gentry: "It comes down to getting stops in the 4th. If you're talking about Grant and Jerry not scoring, you're talking about the wrong end of the floor. We have to come up with stops. Until we do that we're going to continue to struggle on the road and struggle at home. We have to be able to stop teams, and if we can do that maybe we can run out and get something easy." Gentry: "You're talking about the wrong end of the floor. We lost because we could not stop them. They scored at will." Grant Hill: "It's hard to swallow when you're allowing teams dunks and easy baskets. You can swallow it if a team is hitting 3s with a hand in a guy's face. They had 3-point shooters and you wanted to respect that, but we just did a bad job with our rotations." Hill: "It's a situation where you have the momentum, and - bam! - 2 or 3 big plays can get you back in it. That's why you can't relax. No lead is big enough at this level. We relaxed a little, and they got back into it and took the momentum." Hill: "We relaxed and they got back in it, and we could never get the pace of the game back to where we wanted it in the 4th quarter." Hill: "It seemed like Dallas scored every time down the floor in the 4th quarter. Our offense was fine. We had enough points to win the game. We just didn't do a good job of rotating on the perimeter. We just didn't do what we needed to do on defense." Hill: "We scored enough points to win. We just didn't have any defensive presence. Same old story." Jerome Williams: "Our defensive rotations weren't good and that allowed them wide open looks." Cedric Ceballos nailed a 3-pointer with 5 seconds left to tie the game at 30-30. The game stayed close in the 2nd quarter with both teams holding a maximum 5 point lead. Dallas led 48-43 with 4:40 left and Toronto scored the next 15 points to go up 58-48 with a minute remaining. Michael Finley hit a jumper and Erick Strickland drained a 3-pointer with less than a second left. Toronto led 58-53 at the half. Antonio Davis had 16 points in the half. Toronto led 62-56 a minute into the 3rd and Dallas scored 7 consecutive points to go up 63-62 with 8 minutes to go. The game stayed close the rest of the quarter with neither team holding more than a 4 point lead. Dallas led 78-74 after 3. Toronto led 86-84 with 7:25 remaining and Dallas scored the next 7 points to go up 91-86 with 5:45 left. Toronto went on a 7-2 mini-run to go up 94-93 with 3 minutes to go. Dirk Nowitzki made 2 free throws with 2 minutes left and Finley hit a jumper with a minute left to give Dallas a 97-94 lead. Charles Oakley nailed a long jumper with 52 seconds to go. Finley hit 1-2 free throws with 35 seconds left. ADavis missed 2 free throws with 22 seconds left. Toronto immediately fouled Sean Rooks and he hit 1-2 free throws to give Dallas a 99-96 lead with 22 seconds remaining. Rooks tipped away the interior pass and Finley picked up the loose ball and was fouled. He hit 1-2 free throws to cap the scoring. Dallas won 100-96. The Mavs found a way to hang on and win a close game. It wasn't pretty, though, with Antonio Davis missing 2 free throws and both Finley and Rooks shooting 1-2 free throws with enough time left to make it interesting. Dallas' largest lead of the game was only 5 points and Toronto's largest lead was 10 points. Toronto and Antonio Davis went at Dennis Rodman most of the game. Davis finished with 20 points including 6-10 FT and 8 rebounds. Rodman did do his damage on the boards, snagging 16, but only had 1 point and fouled out with 22 seconds left. Vince Carter got in foul trouble and fouled out with 2 minutes left. Carter had 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists. Michael Finley and Cedric Ceballos (on 10-16 FG) both finished with 23 points. Erick Strickland came in and drained 4 3s as part of his 18 points total. Dirk Nowitzki had a poor showing with 12 points including 2-9 FG, but the Mavs didn't need him this night. Quotes Don Nelson: "It was an unexpected win. We were very worried about this game. Both Rooks and Rodman stepped it up defensively. The blending of our team is starting to come together." Nelson: "We were very worried about this game because [Toronto's] a hard matchup for us. I will say that we give Sean Rooks the game ball. He was just sensational when he played." Nelson: "The blending of our team is starting to come together." Michael Finley on Vince Carter: "I'm fired up every day. Whether it's Vince Carter or Jack Haley, I'm going to go in there and give 110%. He's a good player and he's been playing great ball all year. We just didn't want to get him going, and we didn't." Erick Strickland on guarding Carter: "I don't think I did anything significant, except try to make him take tough shots. He made some shots, too. But in the crucial part of the game I made him take some tough shots and we got some breaks and some rebounds and that helped us to pull ahead." Cedric Ceballos: "We've been putting it together and hopefully we can continue. I enjoy coming off the bench and burning guys who are a little tired." Ceballos: "It's great to get Dennis back in the lineup. He's very talented and he put on a rebounding exhibition. He's able to intimidate and put people in bad situations. Hopefully, he's able to continue to do those things for us." Sean Rooks: "It was a good win. Dennis did his thing on the boards. Everybody contributed. Those are the best wins." Rooks: "It was just good to be out on the floor. I'm always watching the games, so it's just good that someone had a little bit of confidence in me today." Dennis Rodman: "That's nothing until I get into shape. This 38 year old body needs a couple weeks to get into shape. I'm just out there relaxing, trying to get myself into a groove." Rodman: "It was a very good win. I played very good, didn't I?" Butch Carter: "I think we threw the ball inside a lot but 2 free throws [for Carter] is not enough. It was something that we've struggled with and it ended up being the difference in the game. We generated fouls in the 1st half but not in the 2nd. We weren't able to get to the free throw line in the 2nd half and it killed us." BCarter: "Vince is not Superman. He's very human. You can't have 2 arms on him and beat him up. It takes away his effectiveness." Vince Carter: "I like being there when its crunch time, trying to help the team win. It's frustrating fouling out." VCarter: "The guys got out of here [the locker room] pretty quickly. It's the last place you want to be when you play like that. I'll be right behind them." Muggsy Bogues: "The last 2 games, the opponent has dictated the tempo of the game and you can't have that." Bogues: "We shouldn't be put in this situation, especially at home. Not taking anything away from Dallas or Denver, but these were 2 games we should have won." Dallas answered by scoring the next 8 points to tie the game at 20-20 with 2 minutes left. Indiana led 27-24 after 1. Dale Davis had 10 points in the quarter. The game stayed close in the 2nd quarter and was tied 40-40 with 4 minutes left. Dallas went on a 9-2 run to go up 49-42 with 2 minutes to go. Damon Jones came in with 5 seconds left and received the back court inbounds pass and took it all the way in for the layup at the buzzer. It was the only court time he saw. Dallas led 51-44 at the half. Dallas led 53-46 with 10 minutes to go and Indiana scored the next 8 points to go up 54-53 with 8:15 left. Dallas scored the next 6 points to go back up 59-54 with 5:20 remaining. Jalen Rose hit a jumper at the buzzer and Dallas led 70-68 after 3. 3-pointers by Michael Finley and Dirk Nowitzki gave Dallas a 78-72 lead with 8:45 left. Sam Perkins answered with a 3-pointer and the game stayed close. Dallas led 80-75 with 7 minutes left and Indiana scored 8 consecutive points to go up 83-80 with 4:20 remaining. Finley nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game with 3:40 left. The teams traded baskets and a 3-pointer by Nowitzki put Dallas up 90-87 with 1:27 remaining. Derrick McKey hit 2 free throws with 1:15 left and another 3-pointer by Nowitzki gave Dallas a 93-89 lead with 32 seconds to go. But Travis Best answered with a clutch 3-pointer 9 seconds later. Dallas tried to inbound the ball, but were forced to use a timeout. Dallas again tried to inbound the ball, but the ball went out of bounds off Finley's fingers thanks to good defense by Indiana. Indiana got the ball to Reggie Miller and he drove baseline and was met by Greg Buckner who got his hand on the ball, but the ref called a foul on Buckner (there was no body contact). Miller hit both free throws to give Indiana a 94-93 lead with 14 seconds left. Indiana used their foul to give with 9 seconds remaining. Finley's long jumper bounced off the front of the rim and time expired. Indiana won 94-93. I really hate to see a good game like this decided by a bad call. It would have been painful, but acceptable to lose this game by Indiana hitting the game winner, but to lose it on 2 free throws that resulted from Reggie Miller being an All-Star and Greg Buckner being a rookie leaves a bitter taste. Indiana unquestionably benefited from homecooking. Dallas did not get to the line once in the 2nd half and Michael Finley did not attempt a single free throw for the game - and he was fouled in the act of shooting at least 4 times. Both Indiana's and Dallas' largest leads were only 8 points. Both teams were without their big man as Rik Smits (sore lower back) and Shawn Bradley (blurred vision) did not play. Jalen Rose led the way for Indiana with 28 points. Dale Davis had a strong 1st quarter and finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Reggie Miller did not have a good game, but hit the free throws that mattered and did a good defensive job on Finley for the final shot. Miller had 15 points including 4-12 FG. For Dallas, Dirk Nowitzki led the way with 23 points including 4-6 3-pointers, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Michael Finley was right behind him with 22 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Cedric Ceballos continued his recent struggle (he's even been missing a number of layups) with 14 points including 6-17 FG and 7 rebounds. Dennis Rodman was a monster on the boards with 18 but only had 2 points (a valuable 2 as it was a tap in that tied the game at 87 with 2 minutes left). Quotes Larry Bird: "I knew it was going to be a tough game. We didn't play the first 3 1/2 quarters. We really didn't deserve to win and we were lucky to get it." Bird: "[Miller] did a very good defensively, especially when they had the ball with 14 seconds left. On the last possession he was all over [Finley]. This year, Reggie is playing great defense and I have a lot of confidence in him." Reggie Miller: "We were very lucky. Sometimes you need a little luck on your side." Miller: "It was a game we really had no business winning, but I'd rather win ugly than lose pretty." Miller: "We really didn't deserve to win the game. We were very, very lucky." Miller [who needs to watch the replay]: "I thought it was an obvious foul. Even if it wasn't, we had so many shooters lined up because their defense had converged, and somebody was going to have a wide-open shot. I can understand where they're coming from, because we've been in that same boat. But right now we need that victory more than they do." Travis Best on his 3-pointer with 23 seconds left: "I looked over at the coaching staff and nobody signaled timeout. Everybody was kind of spread out, so I figured I might as well make a move. I was going for the 3 all the way. I wasn't going to go to the basket. I was able to get [Strickland] on his heels and it felt good." Jalen Rose: "Our work was cut out for us tonight. We were able to overcome some serious matchup problems. We had to work and work. We had to look for a way to win and make big plays." Rose: "Obviously, we miss Rik. Points come tougher but our bench seems to find a way to win. They are a solid basketball team and played well." Don Nelson: "We played a heck of a game. Too bad we didn't get the win." Nelson: "They basically got the call - from my angle [Miller] got the ball blocked. Our All-Star doesn't get the respect that an All-Star deserves, but you can't complain about it." Nelson on having Nowitzki inbounding the ball with 20 seconds left: "We just made one crucial error down the stretch and it was all my fault. That was totally my fault; I had a young player taking the ball out. I did it because he's 7-feet tall and I thought he could see over the defense. But the bottom line is you need a veteran inbounding the ball in that situation, and I made a cardinal error as a coach by putting a young player in that spot, and it won't happen again. It cost us the game, probably." Michael Finley on his last shot: "What I wanted was a make. That's the way Coach drew it up, but I didn't come through." Greg Buckner on the foul that put Miller to the line for the game winning free throws: "I'm a rookie, so I've been getting calls like that against me since I've been here. You've just got to find a way to fight through it. You can't dwell on it. We still had 15 seconds to play. They out-smarted us at the end, but that happens." Buckner: "I don't feel like it was a foul but sometimes it goes that way. You can't dwell on one play. The rest of the game is played. We messed up the rest of the game." Erick Strickland: "This one hurt. It just hurts. We gave that one away." Dennis Rodman: "I was having a great time today. I'm just sad for the younger guys on the team that they had to take a hit like this, but you've got to learn from your mistakes and move on." Steve Nash: "We can gain a lot of confidence from this but it would have been nice to pull it out. [Rodman] seems to have a good attitude and brings a lot of confidence and he adds to our team spirit."
