Don Nelson announced before the Washington game that Cedric Ceballos will sit out 5 to 6 games due to his broken left pinky finger. Ceballos had been playing with the injured finger (injured March 7), but had been struggling (6.6 points including 28.8% FG during the 7 games he played injured). Nelson also said that if the injury did not get better with the time off, Ceballos could miss the rest of the season. Following the Seattle game on April 14, the Mavs will be hosting a free concert with K.C. and the Sunshine Band for those who attend the game. The Mavs will also be hosting a season ticket holder party at Six Flags on Monday April 17. Washington at Dallas (March 25) It was a close 1st quarter with neither team holding more than a 3 point lead, 6 ties, and 8 lead changes. Washington led 23-21 after 1. After brief 23-23 tie with 11:15 left, Washington held a single digit lead the rest of the quarter. Washington scored the last 6 points of the half to go up 47-39 at the half. Chris Whitney had 13 points. Washington led 49-42 with 10:30 remaining and Dallas scored the next 6 points to pull within 48-49 with 8:45 to go. Dallas took a brief 56-55 lead with 5:15 remaining and Washington then scored the next 7 points to go up 62-56 with 3:45 to go. Washington led 67-62 after 3. Washington led 72-67 and scored the next 6 points to go up 78-67 with 7 minutes left. But Dallas answered with 10 straight points to pull within 77-78 with 4:30 remaining. The teams traded baskets and Washington scored the next 8 points to go up 88-79 with 1:20 to go. Michael Finley drove for a layup and hit a 3-pointer to pull Dallas within 84-88 with 35 seconds left. Mitch Richmond hit 2 free throws and Erick Strickland drove for a layup with 27 seconds remaining. But Richmond made 2 more free throws and the Mavs wouldn't scored again. A free throw by Aaron Williams capped the scoring. Washington won 93-86. The Mavs played as lack-luster in this game as they did in the Cleveland game. The team has to learn how to get up for the non-big games. It was a close game the entire way as Washington's largest lead was only 11 points (Dallas only led by 1 and 2 points). Despite the close score, it's wasn't a very exciting or fun game to watch. Chris Whitney carried the Wizards with a career high 29 points (11 of which came in the 4th quarter) and 5 rebounds. Mitch Richmond chipped in with 20 points. Rookies Richard Hamilton and Calvin Booth both had 10 points and those 4 were the only Wizards in double figures. The Mavs also only had 4 players in double figures - Dirk Nowitzki with 18 points, Michael Finley with 15 points, Erick Strickland with 13 points, and Steve Nash with 10 points. Nowitzki also had 10 rebounds and Nash had 7 assists. Shawn Bradley had 8 points and 14 rebounds. Quotes Darrell Walker: "Those guys definitely played well. Whit made big shots, Calvin Booth played well. I knew in practice [Booth] could block shots rebound and shoot the basketball. He had 2 blocked shots but trust me he changed about 5 of 6 [shots]." Walker: "I felt comfortable with [Booth] out there. It's all about evaluation. I wanted to see if the kid's a player. I left him out there and he stood the test so far." Walker on Whitney: "I'm happy for him. He's capable of that. He was controlling the flow of the game for us. I just wanted to keep him out there because he was playing well." Walker: "A big game for Chris. He defended well. Whit made big shots. Every time I looked around he was making a big shot. He was making huge shots without blinking an eye." Walker on playing Whitney 48 minutes: "He said he felt well. I liked the flow of the game that he had going. Chris was controlling the game for us. I just wanted to keep him out there because he was playing well." Calvin Booth: "There were a lot of guys [Walker] could go to. I got shaky on 2 possessions in the 3rd quarter and I kind of thought I messed up my chance for the night. He gave me another chance and I was able to take advantage of it." Chris Whitney: "We went 3-1 on this road trip, and we've won 5 of 6 so we're feeling good about ourselves. I'm going to feel [playing 48 minutes] in about 30 minutes but it was good. I take care of myself and was able to do this." Whitney: "We ran a lot of pick-and-rolls and we caught them in some mismatches. I was able to get my shot off before their big men were able to react. They were trying to stop Juwan so we needed other guys to step up. Juwan did a good job passing out of the double teams and being a threat." Whitney: "I played the whole game so I need to have more assists than that [3]. But I'm happy with the win." Whitney: "I'm just happy we got the win. Playing 48 minutes, I should have had more assists. It was a good trip. It's easy for teams to let up on the last game of a long road trip. We didn't tonight. It's a credit to everyone that's in the locker room." Don Nelson: "[Whitney] was big. You don't have many of those during the course of the season, but he was certainly on tonight." Nelson: "Our energy was there. We really worked hard and tried hard, then we didn't win. So I can accept that. I thought we played hard. We didn't play well enough to win, but coach doesn't have any problems." Nelson on not playing Ceballos for the next few games: "He's just really struggled trying to play with a broken finger. He's not able to do what he wants to do on the floor. I appreciate his effort by the way, in trying to play. I like guys that play hurt, but it's quite obvious for the last 8 games that he just can't catch, and can't do what he wants." Nelson: "He is really not able to do what he wants on the court. If the finger doesn't respond, I'm not going to play him the rest of the year." Nelson: "We are not going to play him anymore for at least a period of 5 or 6 games and see if his finger responds a little bit. He has really struggled trying to play with a broken finger. If it doesn't respond, I am not going to play him for the rest of the year." Steve Nash: "That's how this league is. We're young. We're still improving. We can go on a great patch and have some bad patches." Nash: "The last game [against Cleveland] we started slow, and this game we just didn't play that well. But that's how this league is, especially a team like us. We're young and still proving that we can go on some great patches, and we can also have some bad patches. We just had a bad patch this week." Sean Rooks: "I wish things were different, but I'm not surprised. I know we're trying to get wins, but we're trying different things; different people getting looks. I don't know what's really going on. We're just trying to go out and play hard. We've just got to keep battling and just try to stick together and claw out wins the best way we can." Rooks: "I can't even tell you what happened, to be honest. We're trying different things all the time and we're trying to get wins. We're just trying to go out and play hard every night. We've got to just keep battling and stick together as a team and try to claw to get some wins. We played all right tonight, but we didn't play well enough to win." Dirk Nowitzki: "Very frustrating." Erick Strickland: "I'm concerned, because I hate losing. But we're trying to see some [different] players and we haven't played well." Strickland: "We played hard but we didn't play well. I'm concerned because I hate to lose. We've got 13 games left and we've got to keep playing hard." Michael Finley banked in a 3/4 court heave at the buzzer and Dallas led 25-22 after 1. Finley had 14 points in the quarter. Dallas led 30-27 with 9:45 left and Dallas scored 8 straight points with 6 points from Finley to go up 38-27 with 8 minutes left. Dallas held a 6 to 12 point lead the rest of the quarter. Bryon Russell hit a 3-pointer with 30 seconds to go and Dallas led 55-48 at the half. Finley had 24 points, Dirk Nowitzki had 10 points (all in the 2nd quarter), and Russell had 14 points. Dallas led 61-51 with 9:15 remaining and Utah scored the next 5 points to pull within 56-61 with 8:30 left. Dallas' lead was in single digits the rest of the quarter. Don Nelson pulled one of his tricks with 5:50 left when he inserted Damon Jones with the assignment of intentionally fouling Polynice (15-57 FT this season) to put him on the line instead of Utah running their offense. OP missed both of the free throws, but managed to get back the 2nd miss and Jones fouled him again. His 1st free throw bounced off the back of the rim, up, and in. The 2nd free throw barely nicked the front of the rim. The Mavs missed and Utah used their 20 second timeout purely for the purpose to pull OP and OP sat out the rest of the game. Utah pulled within 68-72 with 4:15 to go and the Mavs went on a 10-2 run, started by 2 3-pointers by Nowitzki, to go up 82-70 with 2 minutes left. Dallas led 88-76 after 3. Howard Eisley opened the 4th quarter with a layup, but the Mavs then scored the next 6 points to go up 94-80 with 9:40 remaining. Utah pulled within 95-102 with 3 minutes to go, but Hubert Davis answered with a 3-pointer as the shot clock was running out. Utah pulled within 98-105 with a minute left, but Greg Buckner hit 2 free throws and Steve Nash made 6 straight free throws to prevent the Utah last rally. Dallas won 113-105. The win was Dallas' first in Utah sinced February 9, 1989 - a span of 25 consecutive loses in Utah including 0-20 in the Delta Center. The Mavs' shot lights out at 58% while Utah shot 48.1%. Though never in the comfortable range, the Mavs led for all but 2 minutes (and that late in the 1st quarter). The Mavs' played a great game. And the Mavs' out-rebounded Utah 38-34 thanks to the great rebounding by ... Dirk Nowitzki! What got into Dirk??? Dirk was a demon going after the defensive rebounds and snagged 17 rebounds (15 defensive and 1 of his offensive rebounds was on a missed Hubert 3-pointer with 1:30 left). Dirk also had 16 points, 8 assists, and 3 blocks. Michael Finley was really hot and had 31 points including 13-18 FG and 5 rebounds. Hubert Davis had 9 of his 15 points in the 4th quarter. He only played 17 minutes and shot 6-8 FG. Steve Nash had a nice game with 16 points including 10-11 FT and 11 assists, but did commit 5 turnovers. Shawn Bradley was active in the middle with 12 points on 6-9 FG and 5 rebounds and had the defensive assignment of getting under Karl Malone's skin. Karl Malone had a poor 1st half, but finished with 26 points (including 20 in the 2nd half) including 8-10 FT and 10 rebounds. Bryon Russell had a nice offensive night with 20 points including 7-11 FG. John Stockton had 16 points and 14 assists and Jeff Hornacek chipped in 14 points. After the final buzzer sounded, Michael Finley went over and shook hands and briefly exchanged words with Jeff Hornacek. Hornacek has announced that he'll retire after this season. Finley: "I just wanted to tell him it was an honor to play against him." You know it was just that kind of night when an attempted pass from Nash into Bradley went off Karl Malone's arm and in to give Dallas a 98-84 lead with 7 minutes left. [The basket was credited to Bradley, the closest Mav to the basket.] Quotes Don Nelson: "More than anything, this was fate. We shoot 58%, we haven't done that in 20 years, 10 years or some number like that. This was my last game coaching here and I just had a feeling we were going to win tonight. I told the staff at our coaches' meeting that we were going to win this game, mainly because we're so due. It's just one of those feelings I had." Nelson: "I just had a feeling we were going to win. I told the staff at our coaches meeting we were going to win this game, mainly because we were so due." Nelson: "This is my last game coaching here and I just had a feeling we were going to win tonight. I don't get that feeling often. More than anything this was fate." Michael Finley: "We beat Utah, and Wisconsin's going to the Final Four. Everything's going my way." Finley: "Coming in, we knew we had to play a perfect game. When you look at the stat sheet, we came as close as we possibly could." Finley: "It was a big win, not only for the team but for the organization. We removed that monkey from our back. We were in a comfort zone offensively, and we came as close to a perfect game as we could play." Finley: "I liked the lack of a celebration. This was different than coming back from 22 points down against San Antonio. We didn't want to act surprised. We wanted to act like we deserved this." Steve Nash: "This is a very difficult place to win, their record shows that. It was a chance for us to finally beat them on their home court. There wasn't much pressure on them. It just felt good to win." Hubert Davis: "We haven't been close here the 3 years I've been here. It was a great win - we just played really well tonight." [Hubert forgot the 68-66 Utah win 12/12/97 where Dallas played stall ball.] Shawn Bradley: "The best win of my career." [Bradley grew up in Utah.] Jerry Sloan: "They played extremely well. They dominated us right from the beginning. It's not a surprise to lose in this league. But sometimes it's a surprise how you lose." Sloan: "They dominated us right from the very beginning of the ballgame, and it was evident when we called that 20-second timeout to start the ballgame that we had our hands full. We didn't realize it until we got to the end of the ball game, where it looked like we were going to have to make a dramatic finish, or pick our energy up enough to try and compete with these guys, and you can't do [that]. We have to play wire to wire. Otherwise, we are going to be out of the playoffs before we can turn around." Sloan: "When you don't come out and attack the other team, and when you don't come out and be aggressive, you're going to lose." Sloan: "We set the tone in the first 5 minutes of the game, when we just started to hang out, and we were 3-11 on outside shots. If you don't make them play any defense - they got in the open court, and scored 26 points in the 1st half on fast breaks." Jeff Hornacek: "We were on our heels the whole night." Hornacek: "I think that we are so used to coming in here and thinking 'Ahh, we'll just get them in the 2nd half.' Well, it's worked before but tonight it didn't. Jerry told us this had been coming for a long time. The last 2 weeks, we've played a lot of games where we didn't get off to a great start, then we go on a run and take the game over. You can't expect that to happen every night." Hornacek: "We still thought we could come back and win the game, but every time we got it down to 7 or 8, they'd hit a 3-pointer. We never put that pressure on Dallas. We never got it down to a 1 point or a 2 point game." Hornacek: "We all think we have lots of energy, even though we don't play like it. Hopefully, this will all get behind us. We'll just put it aside and keep going." Bryon Russell: "They wanted it more than we did. We came out with a lazy attitude and we paid for it." Russell: "We didn't play hard until the last few minutes. You can't do that against a team that's been scoring all night. They were able to do whatever they wanted." John Stockton: "They were playing with a lot of confidence. Those teams are scary. We know that from experience." Karl Malone: "Give them credit, they just wanted this one more than we did. They came in with nothing to lose and nothing to gain and we just didn't respect them enough." Malone on Shawn Bradley: "He's a [bleeping] [bleep]." Dallas led 32-25 after 1. Dallas made 6 3-pointers in the quarter. Dallas led 36-29 with 10:30 remaining and the Clippers scored the next 10 points to go up 39-36 with 7:30 to go. The Clippers could get no more than a 6 point lead and led 55-51 at the half. Michael Olowokandi had 19 points and Erick Strickland had 14 points. The Clippers led 60-57 with 10:15 left and Greg Buckner made a layup and Dirk Nowitzki drained a 3-pointer to put Dallas up 62-60 with 8 minutes left. The game stayed close the rest of the quarter with Dallas holding small leads and 2 ties. Dallas led 82-78 after 3. Finley had 12 points in the quarter. Dallas led 87-80 on a 3-pointer by Steve Nash with 10:15 to go, but the Clippers scored the next 7 points capped by a 3-pointer by Eric Piatkowski to tie the game at 87-87 with 7:15 left. Dallas led 92-91 with 6 minutes remaining and 2 3-pointers by Hubert Davis surround 2 free throws by Nowitzki to put Dallas up 100-91 with 4 minutes to go. Derek Anderson scored 5 consecutive points to pull the Clippers within 99-102 with 1:44 left, but Finley drove to the basket and, as the defense collapsed on him, he found Nowitzki in the corner who drained the open 3-pointer to give Finley his 10th assist. Buckner made 2 free throws with a minute left to put Dallas up 107-99. Piatkowski made a 3-pointer 10 seconds later, but Buckner made 3-4 free throws and Nash made 2 free throws. Dallas won 112-102. Well, it wasn't the blowout I was hoping for, but the Clippers didn't play that bad and the Mavs did play the night before with Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley playing 47 minutes in that game. The Clippers' early and late strategy was to double or triple team Finley whenever he put the ball on the floor and Finley answered by finding the open man and his teammates answered by hitting the open shots. Finley finished with a triple double of 20 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. Nowitzki was clicking from the outside and had 20 points including 4-7 3-pointers and 6 rebounds. He did injure the inside of his elbow midway through the 3rd quarter, but returned 4 minutes into the 4th where he played center and helped hold Michael Olowokandi to only 2 points after Dirk came back. Greg Buckner had a nice, active game with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Steve Nash had 14 points including 4-9 3-pointers (3 in the 1st quarter) and 5 assists and Erick Strickland chipped in 16 points. Shawn Bradley and Sean Rooks struggled with Olowokandi and Bradley got in foul trouble. The Clippers tried to ride Olowokandi in the 1st half (19 points) and Eric Piatkowski in the 2nd half (18 points). Olowokandi finished with 27 points and 8 rebounds and Piatkowski had the hot hand with 28 points including 11-16 FG and 5-6 3-pointers. Derek Anderson had 19 points and 5 rebounds and Jeff McInnis had 14 points. And things were bizarre in Clipper land. Tyrone Nesby had a nice 1st 9 minutes of the game with 8 points and made a brief appearance in the 2nd quarter and did not play in the 2nd half. Apparently Nesby and head coach Jim Todd exchanged words during the 2nd quarer and halftime. Todd said he had a problem with Nesby's hustle in the 2nd and Nesby said the problem was that Nesby had written Troy Hudson's name on his shoes (Hudson was released on Monday). Todd said that Nesby did not play in the 2nd half for disciplinary reasons. Quotes Michael Finley: "It was good for us to face the adversity we did and respond to get a win. I have high expectations for my teammates and this team. Hopefully those expectations can be reached in the future." Hubert Davis: "Everybody hit big shots down the stretch. The Clippers played really well and we got some defensive stops." Jim Todd: "We're trying to give it our best effort night in and night out. That's all I can ask and they're doing it." Todd on Olowokandi: "Mike is getting better all of the time. He's had a string of good games. He is a strong man and he is beginning to use it." Todd on Olowokandi: "If he continues to play like that, he's going to get better all the time. We need that type of performance out of Michael. He's playing with more passion and fire." Tyrone Nesby: "When he took me out, I got mad because I didn't feel like [the play which led to a Dallas layup] was my fault. Then he comes in here complaining about my shoes and he told me I wasn't going to play the last 10 games. That's cool with me because they can just put me on injured reserve. I'm not going to just sit on the bench for 10 games and not play." Nesby: "Then a play happened that [Todd] told me to get back and the guy made a layup. I'm cool with that. Then he's got the nerve to tell me he's not going to play me the rest of the year. That's [bleep]." Nesby: "He got mad at me because I had Troy Hudson's name on my shoes. That's my boy, and [Todd] is going to trip like that." Nesby: "[Todd] told me that he wasn't going to play me for the rest of the year. If he wants to hurt the team like that, so be it. My finger's messed up and I'm still out here trying to play. As far as I'm concerned, they can just put me on [IR] for the rest of the year and bring someone else in here to play."
