Dallas finished the season with a record of 40-42 (home: 22-19, road: 18-23). Dallas went 9-1 in April - the best month in team history (excluding 2 1-0s in October). The Mavs came on strong in 2000 with a record of 32-21 (including losing the 1st 2 games of the new year and 4-9 with the mistake). It was a strange, eventful year (Never a Dull Moment) starting the the weirdness of Leon Smith, then losing Gary Trent on the last play off preseason, the selling of the team to Mark Cuban which seemed to re-energize the team, the mistake of signing Dennis Rodman, the quick release of Rodman when things were obviously going sour, the hiring of 3 defensive coaches lead by Del Harris [a good thing], and the 16-6 record after Rodman's release. As much as I hated the signing of Rodman, hopefully the team learned a valuable lesson - chemistry _does_ matter, so stay away from those headcases. 1999-2000 saw the emergence of Michael Finley as a solid All-Star. Fin had 4 triple-doubles this season and again had 20+ points, 5+ rebounds, and 5+ assists for the season at 22.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists. Only Grant Hill and Gary Payton joined Finley in the 20-5-5 club (Kevin Garnett averaged 4.95 assists). Finley also led the league in minutes played 3,464 - breaking his old team record for most minutes in a season (3,394 in 97-98) - and played 12 complete games. Dirk Nowitzki exploded onto the scene in his 2nd season after a disappointing 1st year - no one was thinking they'd rather have Paul Pierce this season. Dirk upped his points to 17.5 points (8.2 points last season), field goal percentage to 46.1% (was 40.5%), 3-point percentage to 37.9% (was 20.6%), free throw percentage to 83% (was 77.3%), and rebounds to 6.5 (was 3.4). If he keeps developing his game, the guy will easily be a star. Erick Strickland emerged from Nelson's doghouse with his hard nose play and hustle. Strick averaged 12.8 points and 4.8 rebounds. Steve Nash struggled in the 1st half of the season but found his game in the last 2 months and played a key role in the Mavs' strong end of the season. Nash averaged 13.6 points including 57.5% FG and 8.1 assists in April. Cedric Ceballos was the 6th man off the bench averaging 16.5 points and 6.7 rebounds. The Mavs found a nice little gem and Strickland clone (but not as offensively minded) in Greg Buckner. Buck is a good player to bringing in for his defensive work and can supply some offense when need (shot 47.6% FG) and has some nice moves inside. Hubert Davis generally played spot minutes and shot a league leading and team record 49.1% 3-pointers. The Mavs managed to win 40 games despite playing most of the season without a power forward - Trent only played in 11 games and Rodman played in 12 games. The Mavs were also hurting at center as Shawn Bradley (as usual) did not pick up his game. Bradley only averaged 8.4 points and 6.5 rebounds in a career low 24.7 minutes as Nelson often elected to play a line up of 3 guards and Nowitzki and Ceballos or 4 guards and Nowitzki. Bradley did set the team record for most blocks in a Mavs career at 651 (old 615 by James Donaldson). The Mavs finished near .500 despite being creamed on the boards almost nightly as the opponents averaged 48.4 rebounds while Dallas only averaged 41.2 rebounds and were out-rebounded in 67 games (were even in 2 games and won the board battle only 13 times). So how did the Mavs win games? Well, they averaged team record low 13.7 turnovers and a team record high 39.1% 3-pointers. They also set the team record for high free throw shooting at 80.4% (first time above .800). For the season, Dallas averaged 101.4 points and allowed 102.0 points. The future looks bright (especially since the Mavs should have Trent back next season) and hopefully Dallas will be able to attract a nice free agent or two. The Mavs now have an owner who treats the team as a passion instead of a business and the players have responded. I have stars in my eyes for the future of this team and hopefully the potential will be realized this time. The 90s are over. Look for lots of talk in the coming months about who will be coach of the team next year. Don Nelson has said that he doesn't want to be on the bench anymore (just sticking with his GM job), but the players have said they'd like him back and Cuban has made some positive remarks about Nelson returning as well. After Nelson takes his month break in Maui starting today, there is a very good chance (greater than 50%) that Cuban will ask Nelson to return, unless another candidate appears that they (Cuban and Nelson) fall in love with - and I haven't thought of any one who they would. Cuban hosted a fan appreciation part at Six Flags on Monday. I had a great time, but suggest that players be warned _not_ to ride in the last car of the Giant (large wooden coaster) next time as the back is extremely rough - the front is a much smoother ride (I road the front car 8 times that night). I saw Strickland get out of the back and he did not look like he enjoyed it - it even had me slightly concerned as he's had hip and back problems this season (largely due to all the charges he took). Dallas activated Gary Trent Monday, but he didn't play in the last two games. The Mavs activated Trent so that he could serve his 1 game suspension for going into Golden State's locker room to confront Vonteego Cummings after Cummings was ejected January 25. Trent "served" his suspension Tuesday vs the Lakers. The NBA fined Shawn Bradley $10,000 and suspended him for 1 game for throwing an elbow at Walt Williams during the Houston game. Bradley missed the Seattle game serving the suspension. Williams was also fined $5,000 and suspended for 1 game for throwing a retaliatory punch which hit Bradley in the lip. Dallas at Houston (April 13) It was a closely contested 1st quarter with Dallas holding brief 1 point leads and Houston's largest lead was only 6 points. Houston led 23-22 after 1. Michael Finley had 13 points in the quarter. Dallas led 29-25 with 9:30 left and Houston scored the next 9 points to go up 34-29 with 7 minutes left. Houston scored the last 5 points of the quarter to go up 52-42 at the half. Houston shot 12-20 FG and Dallas shot 6-23 FG in the 2nd quarter. Cuttino Mobley had 12 points in the quarter. Houston led 62-53 with 8:30 remaining and Dallas scored the next 6 points to pull with in 59-62 with 6:30 to go. Walt Williams drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Houston a 77-75 lead after 3. The game stayed close over the first 7 minutes of the 4th with neither team holding more than a 3 point lead. Houston led 97-93 with 4 minutes left when Williams was called for a foul, Shawn Bradley spun with his elbow hitting Williams' chin, and Williams responded with a punch that left Bradley's lip bleeding. Both were ejected with flagrant fouls and the game was delayed about 20 minutes due to the refs first deciding to eject Bradley and then trying to figure out who was eligible to shoot free throws. After the long delay with Shandon Anderson shooting 1-2 free throws and Damon Jones shooting 1-2 free throws for the flagrants, the game finally continued. Finely hit a jump hook with 2:20 left to cut Houston's lead down to 101-99, but Houston knocked down the next 6 points to go up 107-88 with a minute remaining. Houston won 111-102 (with an unnecessary layup by Moochie Norris at the buzzer). First, for the strangeness of the fight. Both unquestionably deserved to be ejected. Williams was immediately thrown out and it took the refs a couple of minutes before going over and telling Bradley he was out. Then came the craziness of who was going to shoot the free throws. After some discussion, Shandon Anderson went and shot the 2 free throws for Williams' flagrant. In this situation, the opposing coach gets to choose the player to shoot the free throws from those that were on the court at the time of the foul. When Bradley was ejected, the computer randomly inserted another Mav on to the court. In addition, the Mavs had a couple of players that were subbed in. So the scorers table did not know who exactly was eligible to shoot the free throws (only those on the court at the time of the foul). Greg Buckner first went to the line and then Rudy Tomjanovich said, "No, no, no". After some more discussion, Hubert Davis went to the line and the ref handed him the ball and he made a free throw and Rudy T went nuts. The free throw was waved off and some more discussion occurred. Eventually Buckner went back to the line and then Rudy T changed his mind and Nelson went nuts. Then Damon Jones went to the line and finally shot the free throws that counted. It was over a 20 minute delay from the fight to when action resumed. The irony was that just two days before the league approved a new rule that would allow the opposing coach to chose from any player, but that rule doesn't take affect until next season. Ref Bob Delaney on the delay: "The problem came in that the computer randomly entered a player for both teams into the game and as a result of the computer error, the scoring table had to determine who was in the game to shoot the free throws." Back to the game. It was a closely contested game by two hot teams (Houston had won 4 straight going into the game and Dallas had won 5). Houston shot very well (53.2% FG) and Dallas did not (42%) and Houston grabbed 7 more rebounds. The Mavs were hurt when Steve Nash fouled out with 9 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Houston had great production off the bench from Cuttino Mobley (20 points, 7 rebounds) and Moochie Norris (19 points and 5 assists). Walt Williams was on fire before being ejected and had 21 points including 8-11 FG and 4-6 3-pointers, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists. Steve Francis struggled with 16 points on a poor 6-19 FG but did have 11 rebounds and 7 assists. Michael Finley's 35 points, 5 rebounds, and 9 assists weren't enough to carry the team. Dirk Nowitzki had a poor 1st half with only 4 points but did finish with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Erick Strickland (14 points) and Hubert Davis (10 points) were the only other Mavs in double digits. Quotes Rudy Tomjanovich: "We made some great plays down the stretch. Moochie was fantastic. That's his type of game. I wish the season wasn't almost over. It says a lot about these guys. You can't focus on statistics. They're really soaring big time right now." Steve Francis: "I think we're learning how to win the close games. We're starting to take teams out left and right. Earlier this year, we didn't execute down the stretch, but now we know how it feels to win late. I wish the season wasn't about to end. I don't feel like I want to stop playing." Francis: "After that break [when Bradley and Williams were ejected], it was hard for us to come back, but we knew we had to win. We were leading early and let them come back. We wanted to finish on a strong note with Walt out. We're definitely playing better basketball than we played all year, taking teams out left and right, closing the games in the 4th quarter. We used to not close games late. Now we know how it feels to win games late, and we're doing a good job closing out teams." Cuttino Mobley on Bradley: "He deserves what he got. This is basketball, man. This ain't rugby. It ain't boxing. You've got to protect yourself when someone throws an elbow for no reason. He took me down in Dallas and I threatened him. But he came in there and apologized after the game. I was going to get him back, but he came in and apologized so I shook it off. I don't know how he lives with himself. So religious. C'mon, man. People are so hypocritical." Mobley: "Bradley deserved what he got. This is basketball, not boxing. Walt's got to protect himself after he got an elbow to the face. You could hurt somebody for life with that. There's no need to do that. How can he live with himself, as religious as he is. That's not playing hard. He should play rugby to do something like that." Walt Williams: "It was an unfortunate situation, but I've got no comment." Don Nelson: "The bottom line is, they shot 52% and we shot 42%. We got beat and that's all I've got to say." Nelson: "They both deserved to get thrown out and they were." Michael Finley on the delay after the ejections: "The delay hurt us a little bit, because we had a little momentum at the time, but they had the same time off, too." Shawn Bradley: "I hit him with an elbow and he hit me with a punch. After I went to the locker room, I wanted to talk with Walt, but I understand the league's rule and we sorted it out by messages. I apologized for the elbow and it never should have happened. I was surprised he punched me, but it is over with and we will move on. Both of us really wanted our teams to win. I think Walt was OK with it after the game." Bradley: "It wasn't as flagrant as it looked, but [the elbow] wasn't completely inadvertent. I apologized for the elbow, that I shouldn't have thrown it, and I left it at that. I was told he was cool with it, so I take that [as Williams' apology]." Bradley: "I shouldn't have done what I did; he shouldn't have done what he did, and we'll both feel the repercussions tomorrow when we talk to the league." Dallas led 8-7 with 9:30 left and scored the next 10 points to go up 18-7 with 7 minutes remaining. Dallas led 35-23 after 1. Cedric Ceballos had 11 points. Dallas led 45-32 with 8:30 to go and used a 14-4 run to push their lead up to 59-36 with 5 minutes left. Dallas led in the 20s the rest of the quarter. Dallas led 73-50 at the half. Dallas shot 16-22 FG in the 2nd quarter and 67.4% FG for the half while Seattle shot only 36.7% FG in the half. Erick Strickland had 15 points on 7-8 FG, Greg Buckner had 14 points including 5-6 FG, and Vin Baker - the only Sonic to show up for the game - had 14 points in the half. The early blowout continued in the 3rd as Dallas maintained their lead in the 20s. The Mavs even pushed their lead into the 30s by closing the quarter by scoring the last 8 points. Dallas led 105-73 after 3. The 4th was completely garbage time as Dallas had their largest lead at 109-75 with 11 minutes to go. Seattle's scrubs did manage to make the final score a little more respectable. Dallas won 117-103. Wow. Did Dallas play well. Dallas actually made 13 straight field goals in the 1st half. Dallas shot 59.5% FG through 3 quarters while Seattle shot 38% FG through 3 quarters. In addition, Dallas out-rebounded Seattle 57-41 including 20-17 offensive. The team was just active and Seattle could get nothing going. Dallas had 7 players in double digits. The team was sparked by Cedric Ceballos' first game back after missing 6 due to his broken left pinky finger. Ceballos started for the suspended Bradley and had 19 points (11 in the 1st) and 9 rebounds (7 offensive - playing his best garbage man role [as in getting points off of offensive rebounds, not playing in garbage time]) in 17 minutes. Erick Strickland led the way for Dallas with 21 points including 9-13 FG. Michael Finley had a solid game with 18 points and Greg Buckner gave the team a lift from the bench with 17 points (14 points in 12 1st half minutes) and 9 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki struggle offensive, but wasn't need for this game. He had only 10 points including 4-11 FG but did snag 10 rebounds. Steve Nash had 12 points to go with 6 rebounds and 8 assists and Sean Rooks chipped in 10 points and 9 rebounds. For Seattle, Vin Baker was the only Sonic to show up. He had 25 points including 10-16 FG and 6 rebounds. 12 of Lazaro Borrell's 15 points came in the 4th quarter. Gary Payton really struggled in the game, shooting only 1-9 FG in the 1st half, and finished with 12 points including 5-16 FG and 7 rebounds. No other Sonic was in double digits. Quotes Don Nelson: "We were just really good tonight. It doesn't get any better than that." Nelson: "Our offense was clicking and everybody's confidence was real high. We're playing our best ball right now, at the end of the season, and that's a credit to the team." Nelson: "When we get into the open court, we're pretty good. That really is where the game was. Our offense was clicking, and everyone's confidence was really high." Nelson: "It's a funny game. Sometimes they fall and sometimes they don't. This is as well as we've played 3 quarters and 4 minutes." Nelson: "This is as well as we've played for 3 quarters and 4 minutes. The guys were just really good tonight. They were crashing the boards. When we get into the open court we are very good. That really was where the game was won. We try to run on every occasion." Nelson: "I think this team has overachieved all season. They hung in there between the good and bad times, and we are playing our best ball now at the end of the season." Nelson: "I think this team has overachieved all season and I've had more fun coaching this year than I can remember." Michael Finley: "To have played the way we played tonight against the 8th seeded team in the playoffs this year, there's a lot of what-ifs for us. But we've got to remain positive for these last couple of games, and just remember the feeling and the way we ended this year and hopefully take it into next year." Steve Nash: "We want to win every game we can. We're playing for pride. The way we're playing now is a lot of fun." Nash: "It just shows we're moving in the right direction. Hopefully we can continue to improve and build on this season. We've had some adversity this year with injuries and different disturbances throughout the season but we've stuck with it and played with passion and pride for the most part." Nash: "We haven't had many games where we've been able to rest players in the 4th quarter with a big lead. It's a nice feeling." Erick Strickland: "That's the type of team we have. When we're running and hitting our open shots, we're hard to beat. Everything was going right." Strickland: "When it's going right, it's going right. Everything was going right. Everyone was on fire. Everyone was shooting the ball. Everybody was active. It was just an all around good game for everybody." Strickland: "You would think that we would have been (tired) coming off a back-to-back and didn't get in until 2 in the morning. But we showed a lot of guts and went right after them." Strickland: "There's more where this came from." Dirk Nowitzki: "Everybody got it going early. Cedric came out on fire and got us all going. It was a great night to blow out a good team like Seattle. It's just a great win." Greg Buckner: "We were pretty hot. Those [Seattle] guys were getting kind of frustrated, but it happens like that some nights." Paul Westphal: "It was a thorough beating that we took. I was impressed with the Mavericks and very unimpressed with us. They have been one of the hottest teams in the league. They've been beating pretty much everybody that they've played." Westphal: "That was a thorough beating we took, in every way imaginable. We couldn't find anyone, when the game was on the line, to have a big game." Westphal: "They were just feeding off each other. It seemed like they were never going to miss." Westphal: "We couldn't really find anybody when the game was on the line that was having a good game and they had a whole bunch of guys. They were just feeding off each other. It seemed like they were never going to miss." Vin Baker on his performance: "It helped confidence wise. But the big picture is we had a golden opportunity tonight, and we didn't take advantage of it." Baker: "We had a golden opportunity tonight and we didn't take advantage of it. I'm disappointed that we didn't take the opportunity to get closer to Sacramento. We have to get it together." Baker: "They were just unconscious in the 1st half and we just couldn't find our stroke." Brent Barry: "We have to stop praying for this and hoping for that and sacrificing live chickens in order for Sac to lose. It's not that desperate. It's a situation where you have to take care of your own business and go out and play and compete and be professional about what you do. And that's the point we're at now. We can make the excuse that we've played teams that are on a roll, playing good basketball. But playoff teams should beat those teams." Barry: "We make the excuse that we're playing teams that are on a roll and playing good basketball. But playoff teams should beat those teams. Teams hoping to get deeper into the playoffs beat those kind of ballclubs. Playing hot teams is not an excuse at all. You shouldn't have to get your team to play as hard as they can (at this point). That's not a good thing. The funny thing about this is that there's still time to do something. But it just can't be a 1 game thing." Ruben Patterson: "It's very frustrating going into the playoffs. But it's going to be the same thing in Houston tomorrow if we don't play hard. They're going to be fired up, so we better be, too." Dallas again answered with a 3-pointer, this time by Erick Strickland, to take the lead back. The teams traded 2 points and a 3-pointer by Scott gave Vancouver a 85-84 lead with 9:45 remaining. Vancouver led 89-86 with 8:30 to go and Dallas went on an 11-1 run to go up 97-90 with 5:45 left. Dallas led 106-96 on a 3-pointer by Finley with 2:30 remaining. Vancouver went on an 8-2 run capped by a 3-pointer by Mike Bibby to pull within 108-104 with a minute left. Finley hit a jumper and Harrington made a layup with 29 seconds to go. Nash hit 2 free throws and Vancouver missed a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left. 2 free throws by Greg Buckner capped the scoring. Dallas won 114-106. You look at the opponent and think that the game shouldn't have been as close as it was, but Vancouver played very well. Vancouver only committed 9 turnovers, but Dallas committed only 6 (and 0 in the 4th quarter). Michael Finley had 25 points despite starting 1-6 FG in the 1st quarter (10-21 the rest of the way) and played all 48 minutes. Erick Strickland had a solid game with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki pitched in a quiet 16 points and snagged 8 rebounds. It was a balanced game by Dallas as 4 others were also in double digits: Steve Nash with 13 points (and 9 assists), Greg Buckner with 12 points, Hubert Davis with 11 points, and Shawn Bradley with 10 points (and 8 rebounds). Othella Harrington couldn't miss for Vancouver with 27 points on 10-13 FG and 7-7 FT and had 9 rebounds. Shareef Abdur-Rahim was his usual solid self with 19 points (again, only 13 attempts - how do you _not_ go to him more???) and 13 rebounds. Mike Bibby had a nice game running things for the Grizz with 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists. Michael Dickerson had 16 points (including 5-15 FG) and Felipe Lopez had 12 points - 9 in the 1st quarter. Quotes Don Nelson: "That was a hard game. They're playing as well as we are." Nelson: "It was great to win this game tonight. We've got 2 games left against 2 very good opponents, and we're going to let it fly and see if we can't win the next 2." Nelson: "Erick Strickland won this game for us. I put him on the floor way too long. He is about half-crippled; he looks as old as I am, but I really needed him. He was just making so many plays for us tonight. We owe the game to him." Nelson on only committing 6 turnovers: "A running team normally turns the ball over and we just don't do it. We make good decisions, we pass early. Maybe I've got the fear of God in them and they're afraid to make a risky pass." Nelson on Finley's and Nowitzki's support for him returning as coach: "That means more to me than anything - even more than if Mark would ask me to come back. But I still think this is not the right time to talk about this, at the end of the season when I'm tired." Erick Strickland: "I was just trying to do whatever I could. It was a good balance tonight. Everybody made contributions at the right time. This was hard earned, but once again we did a good job of making our runs late and finishing the game. It was good to see us close the game." Strickland: "I wanted to win so bad. It does secure a home winning record for us for the second straight year. I wanted to win this one badly." Strickland: "We definitely have more confidence down the stretch, whereas at the beginning of the season we were playing not to lose and not being aggressive. Tonight we still pushed the ball to the end and got good opportunities when we could." Michael Finley, who shot 11-27 FG: "The way my shot was going, I didn't know what to expect. I got good looks at the basket, and everybody just kept telling me to keep going, keep going, and my shots finally fell through." Finley on if he thinks Nelson should return as coach: "For the first time in, I think, a long time, this organization is on the same page from top to bottom. We've always had a lot of turmoil here, a lot of people on different pages. I want Coach Nelson to do whatever is best for Coach Nelson, but I think everyone would welcome him back with open arms." Steve Nash: "To finish the season so well after starting so poorly, we just were not ready. Next year we'll prepare to get ready to make sure we do make the playoffs." Lionel Hollins: "I was talking before the game to the Dallas coaches and we were saying there's a whole lot to winning. And it's not just the scoring and the rebounding. There's the getting of loose balls. There's the stepping up and taking charges, there's the help on rotations - all those little things that when you have breakdowns at key times, you give up shots or you make a turnover at a key time." Hollins: "To take it to the next level, there has to be a little bit better execution offensively, a little better execution defensively." Hollins: "Every NBA game is coming down to the wire. You have to make correct plays and make the right decisions all the time. We didn't do that all the time tonight, but we were in the game. Our guys played hard and competed and stuck with it." Othella Harrington on his performance: "It was OK. It's nothing to be happy about. We still lost the game." Cedric Ceballos scored the last 3 points of the quarter and LA led 29-27 after 1. Kobe Bryant had 10 points. Dallas hit a jumper and 3-pointer to tie the game at 34-34 with 8:45 to go. The teams traded leads over the next 5 minutes and the game was again tied at 49-49 with 3:30 remaining. The Lakers built up a small 6 points lead, but Dallas scored the last 4 points of the quarter. LA led 59-57 at the half. Shaquille O'Neal had 14 points, Steve Nash had 12 points, and Cedric Ceballos had 10 points. Dallas scored the first 6 points of the quarter to go up 63-59 with 10:30 left. The Lakers answered with 5 points and the lead again see-sawed with neither team having more than a 4 points lead. The Lakers led 75-74 with 3 minutes to go and Dirk Nowitzki made 2 baskets. Shawn Bradley fouled O'Neal with 50 seconds left giving Bradley 3 fouls and putting O'Neal at the line. Dallas coach Don Nelson decided it was time to employ hack-a-Shaq and inserted Damon Jones in for Bradley while O'Neal missed both free throws. Michael Finley hit a jumper and Jones immediately wrapped his arms around O'Neal's waist. O'Neal went to the line and bricked 2 more free throws. Dallas missed and Jones gave O'Neal another hug. O'Neal missed both free throws and LA committed their foul to give and O'Neal was subbed out with 16 seconds left. No more points were scored in the quarter and Dallas led 80-75 after 3. [Really, no gain or loss on the hack-a-Shaq as neither LA nor Dallas scored while it was employeed.] The team traded jumpers to open the 4th quarter and Dallas led 82-77 with 10:50 left. Erick Strickland made 2 free throws with 10 minutes left. Hubert Davis missed a short jumper, but Erick Strickland rose up for the slam dunk on the offensive rebounds with 9:15 to go. And then Michael Finley drove at the basket with 2 defenders under the basket, intentionally threw up the scoop shot so that it would miss, and tipped in the ball as it came off the front rim (Wow!). Dallas led 88-77 with 8:45 remaining. The Lakers scored the next 5 points, but Dallas answered with 2 buckets. Dallas had their largest lead at 101-88. Dallas made 11-12 free throws in the last 1:25 to secure the win. Dallas won 112-102. The Mavs played solid and the Lakers weren't mailing it in. The Lakers were hurt by the fact that they were playing without their "point guards" Derek Fisher and Ron Harper and Rick Fox and Robert Horry were invisible in the limited time they got on the court. The Mavs won despite the fact that the Lakers' big 3 (O'Neal, Bryant, and Rice) showed up, but the Lakers got no help from the bench. Dallas also won despite being out-rebounded by 15 rebounds. The Mavs were led by a great performance by Michael Finley (though his number may not look spectacular) who had 25 points and 5 assists in playing all but the final 11 seconds. Steve Nash had a strong performance including 23 points (including 8 free throws in the last minute and a half of the game) and 8 assists. Cedric Ceballos provided a nice spark off the bench with 21 points including 6-9 FG and 6 rebounds in 23 minutes. Shawn Bradley's performance in the 1st quarter (8 points on 4 outside jumpers and another bucket early in the 2nd quarter) was key in keeping O'Neal out of the paint on the defensive end. Bradley finished with 12 points and 6 rebounds and didn't get into serious foul trouble until late in the 4th quarter. Hubert Davis chipped in 10 points, 8 of which came in the 2nd quarter. Erick Strickland struggled offensively (10 points including 2-10 FG), but did have a key dunk in the 4th quarter and snagged 10 boards. Dirk Nowitzki also struggled early (0-6 FG in the 1st quarter) but did play well in the 3rd quarter where he scored 8 of his 10 points. For the Lakers, Shaquille O'Neal had a monster game. He could do what ever he wanted to inside and did so. He did struggle from the free throw line, through (what a flat, ugly shot - either it goes in or it doesn't, no friendly bounces off the rim with that shot). He finished with 38 points on 15-25 FG and 8-19 FT and 20 rebounds including 12 offensive. Glen Rice started off well, but the Lakers went away from him (he went 14 minutes between shots from late in the 3rd quarter to 2 minutes left in the 4th where he missed his last 2 attempts) and he finished with 15 points. Kobe Bryant struggled with his shots and had 16 points including 7-20 FG, but did have 14 rebounds including 8 offensive and 6 assists. No other Laker was in double digits. Quotes Don Nelson right after the game address the fans: "How 'bout those Mavs. I'm the happiest coach in the world." Nelson: "What a game! We're playing so well and I looked so forward to this game more than any game this year. I thought we were going to play well. I thought it would be a great game, but it was better than that. It was a great game and we won. Our game plan was sensational and these guys carried it out again with no preparation, no practice." Nelson: "I had a great feeling about this game. We are playing so well, and I looked forward to this game more than any game this year. I thought it would be a great game, and we won. They are just playing not only good basketball, but exciting basketball. This is the way we pictured it." Nelson: "I have built a lot of teams, but I don't know that I have been more proud of a team than this one, because of our start. Our start was tough, and we got behind the 8 ball, and these guys haven't given up." Nelson on the strategy of having the center out on top to pull O'Neal away from the basket, thus freeing up the middle for driving: "Our game plan was sensational, and these guys carried it out again with no preparation and no practice. We just met before the game and went over our strategies. They did a great job." Nelson: "We didn't let [the centers] play low tonight. The other guys understood what we were doing and took their shot blocker away. They did a great job of getting to the rim." Steve Nash: "It was a lot of fun. It was great for the fans. It was good for us to go out at home with a winning record [22-19] and to beat the best team in the league. It was a great accomplishment." Erick Strickland: "This is a big win because they're a good team and not many teams have been beating them lately. They played well, but we just fought them off." Strickland: "I knew that we could play. If we had gotten just an average start we would have been in good shape. We're just happy to play well for the 2nd half of the season." Dirk Nowitzki: "That's for sure, but we didn't do a very good job in the beginning. We didn't protect the home court well enough and lost some easy games on the road. I would rather have made the playoffs." Phil Jackson: "They played Nellie-ball. They isolated Shaq on the outside, left our middle unprotected because he wasn't there and no one else covered very well." Jackson on the end of the 3rd where O'Neal missed 6 free throws and Dallas scored 7 points: "That spelled the game right there, the end of the 3rd quarter. It was very disappointing, 6 free throws, didn't score, they changed it from a close, 1 point game, and [Dallas led] by 5 at the end of 3." Jackson: "They just came out with more intensity; [the] 2nd half, we didn't match it. It was a really nice 2nd half for them. I can't say enough about the energy with which they played." Shaquille O'Neal on his missed free throws: "I wasn't concentrating. It's hard to get up for [these kinds of] [bleep] coaches and [bleep] players. We didn't today. Quote me on that." O'Neal, who did make 7-10 FT in the 4th: "It just took me a while to get to the line and when I got up there, I wasn't concentrating. I'll hit them." O'Neal: "They played well and they hit a lot of shots and they won the ballgame. They played loose. They shot the ball well. We had a couple of shots to win it but could never click." O'Neal: "We know every team is going to be after us and we just have to be ready for it. We just have to cut down on our mistakes. If we can do that then nobody should be able to beat us." Kobe Bryant: "You don't want to lose any ballgames. But there's nothing we could do about it. It's not going to be destructive. It's not going to destroy us or anything." Bryant: "See, the thing that hurt us is that we didn't step up and meet their challenge and meet their intensity. We played pretty hard, but we didn't step up to the plate when we needed to. Their intensity kept picking up, and we stayed pretty solid." Glen Rice: "We had poor execution on defense and the offense wasn't so great. We had an opportunity to go out and beat a team, but we just didn't get the job done." Rick Fox on playing Dallas: "That is a dangerous situation to be in, especially in this league, when you play on an opponent's home court, where they've played so well the last 2 months." But the Mavs were coming off the win vs the Lakers the night before and didn't take this game seriously enough. It was a close 1st quarter with 8 lead changes and the largest lead was only 5 points. Cedric Ceballos nailed a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left and Dallas led 31-29 after 1. Bobby Jackson had 11 points and Erick Strickland had 10 points. Dallas held single-digit leads the entire 2nd quarter and led 62-59 at the half. Steve Nash had 15 points and Jackson had 15 points. The teams traded leads in the 3rd quarter. Minnesota scored 7 straight points to go up 78-74 with 3:45 remaining. Minnesota led 87-82 after 3. Minnesota led 89-84 with 10 minutes left and Dallas scored the next 10 points to go up 94-89 with 7:30 to go. Minnesota scored 5 points to tie the game at 102-102 with 3:20 left, but Dallas scored the next 5 points to go up 107-102 with 2:30 remaining. The teams traded jumpers and Anthony Peeler made 1-2 free throws with 1:30 to go. Shawn Bradley tipped in a miss and Michael Finley hit a jumper with 35 seconds left to give Dallas a safe 113-105 lead. 2 free throws by Jackson capped the scoring. Dallas won 113-107. It wasn't a good game as both teams seemed disinterested, especially Minnesota with the key players on the bench (and Joe Smith and Wally Szczerbiak, who was playing very well, only played a couple of minutes in the 4th quarter). But the Mavs played their players and they pulled it out down the stretch. Since both teams didn't give much effort in this game, I won't in the write up. Let me just say that Steve Nash had a near triple-double with 22 points including 8-10 FG, 8 rebounds, and 10 assists. Quotes Don Nelson: "That was not an easy game for us, playing last night and with an emotional win like we had [against the Lakers]. It was like pulling teeth. We wanted it to be an easy game, so we decided we were going to shoot long jump shot all night, so it wasn't easy. I'm just happy that we found a way to win. 40 wins is nice." Nelson: "I was hoping that I could sit back and kind of relax this game. But I really had to coach the last quarter." Nelson: "Bradley, I was waiting for him. I don't think he played very well for a period of time, but down the stretch when I really needed him, I told him, 'Hey, the season didn't end yesterday. It ends after this game and give me a good effort,' and I think he did." Nelson on coaching again: "This is it. I've had a lot of great years, but I don't think any of them were better than the last 3 months. We're the best team in basketball right now. Over the last 2 months, nobody has played as well as us." Nelson: "This is it. It feels great. To have this team come along as it has feels great." Nelson: "I've had more fun coaching this year than I can remember in a long, long time. It's a great locker room, the guys are together, and it's just been a pleasure to coach them this year." Nelson: "I do my job and appreciate that the team is playing the way I want them to and the way I pictured them playing. The players who have taken criticism, now you can see kind of what I saw in them." Nelson: "It was a mess, I thought I could straighten it out. I didn't think it would happen this quick. It should be easier for the new coach because we've established a lot of positive things." Steve Nash: "It kind of makes the summer more bearable to know we finished the season strong, to know we gave it everything we had in the 2nd half of the season. In the last 20 or 21 games, we were the 2nd best team in the league and that feels good. But it still was for nothing." Michael Finley: "Considering where this organization has come from, 40 wins, that's tremendous. But at the same time, I had high expectations for this team. It's not a disappointment. It could have been a lot more disappointing, but, for me, we underachieved." Flip Saunders: "Nobody got hurt. It was a successful night." Saunders: "We're playoff-ready." Saunders: "I'm not taking anything away from Dallas, but the last two days, our staff has spent all our time watching Portland. I'm going to start calling them Portland." Tom Hammonds on playing in a game that didn't matter: "It was just different. But obviously we got a chance to rest Kevin and Terrell, and we had a chance to win the ballgame with the guys we had on the court." Malik Sealy: "A lot of teams have won 50 games and then got knocked out in the first round. Our goal is to win a championship. We have 15 more games we want to win. We want to seize the moment."
