- 9/4 Argentina defeated USA 87-80 in the World Championship tournament.
The USA continued their poor play (they've won most of their games in this
tournament in the 3rd quarter - often trailing in the 1st half and sometimes
in the 3rd quarter) and this time faced a team that didn't let up after
halftime. The US played terrible defense and one-on-one offense and paid
the price. Despite that, USA advanced to the quarterfinals (the 1st and 2nd
rounds are round-robin).

- 7/24 Unrestricted free agent Rashard Lewis is coming to town Thursday
for a visit. The Mavs are very interested in Lewis and he is a good young
talent (he's a small forward), but the Mavs don't have much money to offer
him - they are restricted to the $4.545 million mid-level exception, unless
they can arrange a sign-and-trade with Seattle (made more difficult as Seattle
just got Kenny Anderson in a trade and probably wouldn't be interested in Nick
Van Exel). Seattle made a lower than expected offer to Lewis (reportedly 7
years, $50 million) as they are watching the salary cap, but can up their
offer as they have full Bird rights with Lewis. Houston is also actively
interested in obtaining Lewis. The Mavs are encouraging fans to greet Lewis
when he arrives in Dallas on Thursday at 11:48 am on American Airlines
flight 1058.
- Mavs assistant coach Del Harris is still in the running for head
coach of the Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets owner reportedly wants to fill the
position by the end of the week and Harris and Utah assistant Phil Johnson
are believed to be the leading candidates.
- Reports are that unresticted free agent Greg Buckner is going to
sign a 6 year, $18 million contract with Philadelphia.

- 6/26 The Mavs made no moves on the 2002 draft night and simply
used their #55 pick to select Mladen Sekularac. Sekularac is a 6-8
guard-forward who is still under contract for one more season with his
team in Yugoslavia - he won't be coming this year, but the Nelsons sounded
like they like him and think he'll be here next year.
- 6/24 Dallas released Danny Manning. Manning signed a 2-year contract
last summer, but only $900,000 for the $1,700,000 he was scheduled to make
in 02-03 was guaranteed.
- 6/21 As expected, Dallas extended qualifying offers to Raef LaFrentz,
Wang Zhizhi, and Eduardo Najera, making all 3 restricted free agents.
- 6/19 Avery Johnson (18 votes) and Steve Nash (16 votes) were
selected to the All-Interview 2nd team.
- 6/5 Wang Zhizhi has not reported to China for mandatory national
team training. The agreement Dallas has with China which allowed Wang to
play in the NBA stipulated that Wang would return to China within a
certain time frame after the Mavs' season ended. Dallas has not heard from
Wang since the end of the season. A representive for Wang says that he is
in LA and wants to play in the NBA summer leagues and that he still plans
to play for China in the World Championship games in late August.
- Both Donn Nelson and Del Harris are expected to interview for the
vacant Denver Nuggets head coaching job sometime in the next few months.
