Lawson missed with 2 seconds left and Ellis missed a 3-pointer at the

Sacramento was unable to make a rally and got no closer than 7 points the
rest of the way. After being out-scored 14-32 in the 1st quarter, Dallas

not watching the on-court play and Darren Collison (not playing due to a
minor injury) went over at one point to try to talk to him.

to take a 61-44 lead with 8:30 to go as Utah missed their first 3 shots
and had 4 turnovers. A 3-pointer by Burke with 7:55 remaining finally got
Utah on the scoreboard in the 3rd quarter. But Dallas would continue
leading in the teens the entire 3rd quarter and led 78-62 after 3. So
after 5 straight terrible 3rd quarters Dallas finally had a good one in
this game in out-scoring Utah 26-18 in the 3rd as Utah shot just 4-12 FG
and had 7 turnovers. Dallas scored the first 7 points of the 4th quarter

Aldridge (Por) got a tap in at the quarter buzzer and Dallas led 50-46 at
the half. Then came the dreaded 3rd quarter. Monta Ellis picked up his
4th foul a mere 8 seconds into the quarter and sat for the next 5 minutes.
2 free throws by Tyson Chandler opened the 3rd quarter and then Dallas went
to sleep as Portland went on a 19-4 run to take a 65-55 lead with 6:40
remaining as the Blazers scored on 9 straight possessions. 8 straight

ran down - 2 Devin Harris free throws capped the quarter scoring. Portland
out-scored Dallas 35-18 in the 3rd quarter as Portland shot 13-20 FG and
Dallas shot 6-20 FG. And things didn't get better in the 4th quarter as 5
straight Damian Lillard points gave Portland a 95-74 lead with 7:25
left and Rick Carlisle pulled the plug in sitting the starters (it was the
first night of a back-to-back for Dallas). Portland continued to roll in
scoring the next 6 points to take their largest lead at 101-74. Portland
out-scored Dallas 62-37 in the 2nd half as Dallas shot just 13-39 FG and

28-10 run to pull within 69-77 with 4:40 to go - Dallas did score the next
7 points, but was unable to get their lead larger than 15 points the rest
of the quarter. Dallas led 91-79 after 3. Boston out-scored Dallas 38-24
in the 3rd quarter. Dallas' lead hovered around 10 points over the first
half of the 4th quarter. 6 straght Celtic points pulled them within
101-105 with 4:15 remaining and it was a tight game to the finish. Dallas
did score 7 straight points to take a 10 point lead with 2:20 to go, but
Boston rattled off the next 9 points (with the last 2 coming from free
throws where Avery Bradley was fouled on a 3-point attempt (hiting 2-3
FT)) to pull within 113-114 with 40 seconds left. Monta Ellis drove for 2
to make it a 3 point game and Jeff Green (Bos) missed a 3-pointer with 20

quarter as Monta Ellis had 10 points. A layup by Ellis opened the 3rd
quarter, but San Antonio then rattled off a 15-2 run to take a 60-57 lead
with 7:30 left - Tyson Chandler picked up his 4th foul (and a technical

76-73 after 3. San Antonio out-scored Dallas 31-20 in the 3rd quarter as
Tony Parker had 10 points and Manu Ginobili had 9 points. A jumper by Tim
Duncan gave the Spurs their largest lead at 91-81 with 6:30 to go, but
Devin Harris kept Dallas in the game with a 3-pointer. A jumper by Dirk
Nowitzki pulled the Mavs within 96-98 with 2:15 remaining and 2 free
throws by Ellis tied the game with 1:50 left. After Duncan missed,
Nowitzki hit a short baseliner to give Dallas a 100-98 lead with 1:30 to
go, but Parker nailed a 3-pointer with 1:10 remaining. Ellis turned the
ball over, but Ginobili missed with 25 seconds left. The Mavs ran the
clock down with passing and looking for a shot and Chandler's 3-pointer

the backboard. The largest lead in the game (once each by both teams) was

- 10/24 In a preseason game, Dallas defeated Orlando 117-92 in
Orlando. Dallas used an 18-2 run in the 2nd quarter to take their first
double-digit lead and led 57-46 at the half. Dallas came out strong to
open the 3rd quarter and led 66-48 a little over 3 minutes in and led

- 10/24 Raymond Felton (sprained right ankle) did not play in the
Orlando game.
- 10/23 In a preseason game, New Orleans defeated Dallas 88-85 in
Bossier City, Louisiana. With the first game of a preseason back-to-back
Dallas elected not to play their stars. And that resulted in a really
ugly 1st quarter (the only good news is that only those at the game had
to see it as neither team broadcast the game) as New Orleans led 23-10
after 1 as Dallas shot just 4-16 FG and had 7 turnovers. And New Orleans
shot just 6-21 FG in the 2nd quarter and it was an exciting 38-33 Pelican
lead at halftime. And not much better in the 3rd quarter (except Dallas
finally hit a 3-pointer after missing their first 17). But the teams
found some offense in the 4th quarter and it ended up being a close finish
where Ricky Ledo missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Gal Mekel had 17
points and 8 assists and Jae Crowder had 14 points and 7 rebounds. For
New Orleans, Tyreke Evans had 14 points and 7 rebounds and Anthony Davis
had 13 points and 6 rebounds. Sitting out this game (rest) for Dallas was
Tyson Chandler, Monta Ellis, Devin Harris, Jameer Nelson, Dirk Nowitzki,
Chandler Parsons, and Brandan Wright.
- 10/23 Raymond Felton (sprained right ankle) did not play in the
New Orleans game.
- 10/21 Dallas released Eric Griffin and Yuki Togashi.
- 10/20 In a preseason game, Dallas defeated Memphis 108-103 in
Dallas. In a preseason game that Dallas did take semi-seriously, the Mavs
used a 21-8 run during the 2nd quarter to take a 13 point lead. Memphis
did pull within 6 points in the 3rd quarter, but the Mavs used a 22-9 run
to take a 19 point lead - the only disappointment in the 3rd was that
Quincy Pondexter (Mem) nailed a 3-pointer at the quarter buzzer. None of
the starters (either team) played in the 4th quarter - the Memphis deep
reserves did make a comeback, but Dallas had enough of a lead to hang on
to the win. Dallas had 7 players in double-digits, led by Tyson Chandler
and Monta Ellis with 14 each. Pondexter had 18 points and Marc Gasol had
17 points and 7 rebounds.
- 10/20 Raymond Felton (sprained right ankle) did not play in the
Memphis game.
- 10/18 In a preseason game, Indiana defeated Dallas 98-93 in
Indiana. As expected with the 2nd night of a back-to-back, Dallas did not
play Tyson Chandler, Monta Ellis, Devin Harris, Jameer Nelson, Dirk
Nowitzki, or Chandler Parsons (game off for rest). Despite that, Dallas
contolled the game most of the way with their lead around 10 points (as
high as 14) from the mid-2nd quarter through the mid-4th quarter. Indiana
used a 18-3 run to take a 1 point lead late in the 4th and then scored the
last 5 points of the game for the win. Indiana was able to get the
come-from-behind win thanks to a strong 4th quarter where they out-scored
Dallas 37-19 in shooting a white hot 12-16 FG and 10-13 FT (while Dallas
shot 8-25 FG and 1-1 FT). Richard Jefferson had 19 points including 7-11
FG and 5 rebounds, Gal Mekel had 19 points and 9 assists (in a very
preseason high 43 minutes), and Al-Farouq Aminu had 11 points and 12
rebounds. For Indiana, Chris Copeland had 22 points including 6-14
3-pointers (only attempted 1 2-pointer) and David West had 16 points
before leaving the game in the 3rd quarter with a sprained ankle.
- 10/18 Raymond Felton (sprained right ankle) did not play in the
Indiana game.
- 10/17 In a preseason game, Dallas defeated Cleveland 108-102 in
Cleveland. Dallas brought out their zone defense and used it extensively
in this game. It was effective in the 1st quarter (along with Dallas'
offense really clicking) as the Mavs out-scored Cleveland 37-26 -
Dallas also was able to go with their expected 5 regular season starters
for the first time (with Raymond Felton being suspended for the first 4
regular season games - after which he'll likely be the starting point).
The Mavs' 2nd unit did not do as well with the zone as Cleveland used a
27-8 run during the 2nd quarter to decimate Dallas' 15-point early quarter
lead. But with Dallas' 5 starters back on the court for at least 7
minutes of the 3rd quarter, the Mavs out-scored Cleveland 32-23 in the 3rd
and led by 10 after 3. The ending was a little disappointing as the
Cleveland deep reserves and non-guarantees cut into Dallas' lead (with the
Mavs mostly using regular season players in the 4th, for the first time
this preseason), but the Mavs did hold on for the win. Dallas held a
42-26 points in the paint advantage. The zone did disrupt Cleveland at
times as they had 22 turnovers including several 24 seconds violations.
Chandler Parsons had 19 points and 5 rebounds, Jameer Nelson had 19 points
including 4-6 3-pointers, and Dirk Nowitzki had 16 points and 9 rebounds
(and 3 other Mavs were in double-digits). For Cleveland, Kyrie Irving had
23 points and Tristan Thompson had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Cleveland
sat Kevin Love (rest) and Shawn Marion (rest) for the game.
- 10/17 Raymond Felton (sprained right ankle) did not play in the
Cleveland game.
- 10/15 Dallas signed Yuki Togashi to a non-guaranteed contract.
- 10/12 In a preseason game, Dallas defeated Indiana 106-98 in
Dallas. It was another close preseason game through 3 quarters - but
taken with a pinch of salt as Indiana wasn't playing two of their starters
and Dirk Nowitzki and Tyson Chandler did not play in the 2nd half (no
injuries, just preseason). Indiana was up by 1 point with 7:30 left in
the 4th when Gal Mekel nailed a 3-pointer and then Charlie Villanueva
rattled off 3 more 3-pointers to put Dallas up by 11 and Indiana would get
no closer than 8 points the rest of the way. Nowitzki had 16 points on
7-11 FG and Chandler Parsons had 11 points and 7 rebounds. Villanueva
had 16 points including 4-6 3-pointers and Mekel had 11 points - all of
their points came in the 4th quarter where Dallas out-scored Indiana 37-24.
For Indiana, C.J. Miles had 19 points and C.J. Watson had 16 points
including 4-7 3-pointers. Indiana was playing without Roy Hibbert and
George Hill (and, obviously, Paul George (out for the season)).
- 10/12 Monta Ellis (sprained left knee) missed the Indiana preseason
game. Dirk Nowitzki (hip contusion) did play in the Indiana game, after
missing the first 2 preseason games.
- 10/12 Dallas announced that Raymond Felton would be out at least 10
days due to a sprained right ankle. The injury occurred during Friday's
OKC game and Felton was on crutches on Saturday.
- 10/10 In a preseason game, Oklahoma City defeated Dallas 118-109 in
Dallas. Dallas was without two starters as Dirk Nowitzki and Monta
Ellis did not play and Oklahoma City was missing key players Serge Ibaka,
Nick Collison, and Kendrick Perkins. It was a better game than the
Houston game, but that's not saying much as games don't get much uglier
than that Houston game was. The big happening from the game was when
Raymond Felton went down with 2:30 left in the 1st quarter with a sprained
ankle - he had to be helped from the court and put no weight on his right
leg (X-rays were negative and he will miss Sunday's game and with the
following game not until Friday it is not known if he will be out longer
(but don't be surprised if he is (some sprains take a while to recover
(not everyone has Dirk's ankles) and it's preseason so no need to rush)).
Anyhow, the game showed that Dallas still has defensive work to do if they
really want to become a top-10 defensive team as 118 is simply too many
points to give up in this league. Despite the 9-point final margin, the
game was tight down the stretch (with again the coaches going mostly with
reserves and non-guarantees in the 4th quarter) as Oklahoma City led just
109-108 with 90 seconds left. Anthony Morrow (OKC) had a quick 3-pointer
and then Dallas played the foul game the rest of the way so that they
could practice running plays. For the game, Oklahoma City shot 48.1% FG
and 30-40 FT and Dallas shot 41.3% FG and 32-45 FT. Al-Farouq Aminu had
14 points, Jae Crowder had 14 points, and Richard Jefferson had 13 points.
Chandler Parsons had 9 points on just 4-12 FG and 1-6 3-pointers, but also
had 6 rebounds and 6 asssits in 20 minutes. For Oklahoma City, Morrow had
21 points including 4-7 3-pointers and Steven Adams and Jeremy Lamb had
nice outings. Adams had 19 points including 8-9 FG, 5 rebounds, and 3
blocks and Lamb had 19 points and 11 rebounds. The Thunder also lost
Reggie Jackson in the 3rd quarter as he went to the lockerroom (never
heard what happened, he was walking without assistance though).
- 10/10 Raymond Felton left the Oklahoma City game late in the 1st
quarter with a sprained right ankle. X-rays were negative, but he will
miss Sunday's game and will be evaluated later in the week as to his
availablity for Friday's game.
- 10/10 Dirk Nowitzki (right hip contusion) and Monta Ellis (sprained
left knee) sat out the Oklahoma City game. Nowitzki may play in Sunday's
game vs Indiana, but Ellis will not (he will be re-evaluated later in the
week as to if he can play in next weekend's games). Ellis' injury
occurred during Thursday's practice and the MRI on the knee showed no
serious damage.
- 10/7 In a preseason game, Houston defeated Dallas 111-108 in Dallas.
It was as ugly as first preseason games usually are, but was made much
worse by the many whistles - the teams combined to attempt 109 free throws
(7:30 pm starts usually end a little before 10 pm, this one ended at
almost 10:30). Some good things were seen and lots of bad things (Houston
had 44 points in the paint and 22 fast break points - and the Mavs have
been emphasizing defense in training camp). The ending was a little
exciting as a 3-pointer by Gal Mekel tied the game at 108-108 with 7
seconds left. After a timeout, Jae Crowder played tight defense, but was
(incorrectly) called for a foul on Kosta Papanikolaou behind the arc with
.2 seconds left and he hit all 3 free throws for the final score [and
thankfully overtime was avoided]. Despite the close game, both coaches
did treat it was preseason as none of the starters played in the 4th
quarter. Houston shot 29-45 FT and Dallas shot 47-64 FT and both teams
had 24 turnovers each - yuch. Chandler Parsons had 14 points in a nice
debut, Monta Ellis had 13 points (including 9-12 FT) but also had 6
turnovers, and Charlie Villanueva saw most of his minutes in the 4th
quarter and had 13 points in just 14 minutes - but also
fouled out in the high whistle affair. For Houston, James Harden had 17
points and Donatas Motiejunas had 18 points.
- 10/7 Dirk Nowitzki did not play in the Houston preseason game due
to a right hip contusion. [Nothing serious - he would havbe played if it
was regular season.]
- 10/4 The Mavs held their annual Fan Jam and the Blue team defeated the
White 40-37 in a 20 minute game (really 40-34, but they cheated to make
the last seconds more exciting as Villanueva's 3-pointer with about 4
seconds left occurred after the ref had (correctly) ruled Villanueva had
stepped out of bounds). The Blue team consisted of Ricky Ledo, Raymond
Felton, Greg Smith, Al-Faruoq Aminu, Jae Crowder, Devin Harris, Eric
Griffin, and Brandan Wright. The White team consisted of Charlie
Villanueva, Bernard James, Tyson Chandler, Doron Lamb, Monta Ellis, Jameer
Nelson, Richard jefferson, Chandler Parsons, and Dirk Nowitzki. Ivan
Johnson (minor injury) and Gal Mekel (Jewish holiday) did not play.
